Thanks! This is one of the most inspiring videos I have seen in a while. After having picked up cooy of Railway Modeller a couple of weeks ago my mind turned to 0 gauge in the garden. And then TH-cam suggested this video. Thanks yet again 😊
German model railway retailers always look at me as if i was completely bonkers when I tell them I want to run an O-Gauge Railway in the garden - so I never tried. So I have LGB track with Playmobil trains for the kids. When I'm brave enough (and have the money ;-) ) - I will definitely come back to this video (and future videos of yours) to o it the clever way. Great!
I've used the fossworks in my G1 Locos, including a Black 5, excellent bits of kit. If you are struggling for space in your other O gauge locos, I recommend trying out Micron, or Locoremote, which can be made very small! Great to see it returning and hopefully you can enjoy the railway over the summer.
Well, Richard, it is very nice to see that life has allowed you to get back to the garden series for videos. RC is quite an interesting way to go and very interesting walk-through! Nicely done.
Hi Richard, so great to see you back posting again, really missed your updates Its even better to see the revival of the garden New Junction, and that you're enjoying it to Hope everything else is good in your world with family and work Please do keep the updates coming for this & your 00 Thx again for sharing
That's a great looking loco,Richard and the RC Controller seems like a good solution for the garden railway. On another note, you asked to be kept in the loop regarding my grandson's 009 layout, it's coming along slowly, but he's doing a great job of it so far. I don't know if you've seen them but he's posted three updates on his Dylington Model Railway channel, and there should be another one coming soon. ..cheers James 🙂👍
It's a lovely model! I converted my B5 to battery a couple of months ago and have tried numerous receivers in them. For a few years now whenever we use Fosworks with DCC we've re-assigned sound on/off F-key from F1 to something else (we chose F11 but as long as it's above 3!) as we were forever turning the sound off by mistake! We usually have the two whistles on 1 & 3 and the brake remains on 2. TBH they're the functions you use most and you don't have to use shift buttons to get to them. Can't beat deadrail for outdoors in the UK 👍 I went dead back in the last century and have never regretted it.
Great update Richard RC running is certainly a game changer for out door usage, out of interest what happens if the loco should loose contact with the controller will it bring itself to a safe stop. I noticed one of your coaches has a bit of a dodgy wheel that requires attention, don’t want it to derail an drop off the high level section.
lovely to see the garden in action again richard and well you have been quite a busy man the last 3 years so it's understandable and im glad to see you and lulu are enjoying the weather
So exciting to see a Garden Railway update video! Here in sunny Southern California, rain isn't so much of an issue-- but dust and dirt from the nearby freeways sure is. So Battery/Bluetooth has been my initial solution. Now if only I can keep my ties from melting in the sun!
If only there was a 7F available with the same level of detail - the Black 5 with 2 coaches reminded me of some of the late great Ivo Peters’ films! Got me thinking - had you thought of modelling the S&D? A lot of the appeal there was the scenery, which your garden suits perfectly (although I don’t recall Mr Peters filming any 100ft tall dogs…!)
Looking forward to episode seven with the loco crew fitted and a few more carriges. That Black Five is a dream of a model, just to look at it gives goose bumps. Barry.Devon
Very nice addition to your layout and your right new locos do give you motivation, the battery and radio control does save alot of hassle and track cleaning, looking forward to seeing more on the garden railway keep up the good work. Tom
Great video Richard, I'm always amazed at what John can do with DCC and the capabilities the system has too, the sound profile is pretty epic. RC is definitely the way forward for outdoor railways. Take care James
So glad to see you've gone for R/C! I've got a 16mm model with Fosworks and MyLocoSound (its a freelance diesel) that I bought only a couple of months ago, but boy has it changed my experience, before then I just had a manual control Ruston (which is still nice).
I changed back to O gauge once both Heljan announced the Ruston 48DS with Accurscale 88DS, I thought ideal for a short shunting layout on my 40' narrowboat home, in the meantime somehow Dapols 08, B4 & Sentinel loco have found their way in! I do wish for the like of a Black 5 Having being involved with BESP move their Black 5 45293 (+ 35010 Blue Star) to the Colne Valley to join 45163 which was (moved to ELR for main line ops via Ian Riley's) now it's a rolling chassis.

What a stunning looking loco. It's really cool how you got it set up for RC. Perfect for a garden railway, I don't do O gauge, but that loco makes me think twice, lol. All the best big man. Brian @ The Angels
Got to admit thats the first time I have seen a model railway have vegetation cleared from the tracks to reactivate it and network rail not in sight. Great to see it running again Richard, love the Black 5, look forward to seeing more in the near future. Best wishes, Julian.
Great Video Richard , l have been playing around with RC fitting my 00 locomotives due to my layout having a lot of long tunnels so track cleaning is impossible , l have my battery receiver and esc in carriages behind the loco , works a absolute treat and not expensive . Regards David
Great to see you back! In the USA wed have such dirrerent locomotivesm I love the British/European models. Keep up the ggod work and remember Anti Clockwise is Counter Clockwise across the Big Pond!😀
Amazing... I wonder if a suitable method of providing battery power would allow direct powering of a Hornby TXS bluetooth decoder and therefore allowing remote control via the bluetooth from the phone app?
Most informative. Great. Could you use a siding with an isolated tack section for the locomotive to recharge the battery from power to that isolated section and using the power pick ups on the tender wheels. Obviously the charge connector wiring would need to be modified and probably a stering diode added to the circuit.
If anyone can master the complexities of the dual twidly-twisty knob press-button thing, it is you mate 😉 That or give Lulu a go anyway (Clair asked if you could give Lulu an extra cuddle from her!) 🐕 🖤 Seriously though mate, Ellis really has come up with a wonderful model. It is certainly something I have considered in the future when we have found our ‘forever’ place of residence, as I’d love a simple garden branch with a Black 5, Class 33, GWR Manor and maybe a couple of tank engines to boot. I Wouldn’t need more than that, and with that brilliant system it could actually happen (though I suspect the tank engines will be a tad more difficult job!) 🤯 Just a couple of asides mate: 1, are there any other locos on your ‘want’ list?🤔 2, why not get herself a track cleaner wagon to aid traction? Won’t need to worry about current after all 😉 3, what was the knowing look about re 8 carriage trains? You planning an extension? 😎
This is my dream now this this video has given me the inspiration to make my dream a reality. Please can you post a list of what you need and who are the best? Thanks for a great video. Good luck with your garden railway.!
You'd be considering model boats in Scotland! While it carries a fairly hefty price tag, and the additional remote control on top, that is one impressive loco. Cheers
My 1:29 layout here in Arizona that runs through the house, garage and yard is dead rail with AirWire remote control. Really, the only way to run a garden railway. Running mostly 3- and 4-loco consists, I’ve found it best to have a dedicated remote for each consist.
Hi Richard, great to see you back in the garden. The locomotive is absolutely fantastic wish I had the space and money 😂 All the best to the family Andy
Why not get a snowplough to help clear the overgrown plant maybe once you’ve snipped it? Also is there not away you could put wires further down the track near the loop and hide the wires in a little like gutter fitted to the underside of the wooden beams?
A good video here Richard, very nice Black 5 there, I recently bought one of the new hornby ones, very nice hearing sound in an O gauge loco, I have been firing a variety of my OO locos with sound as a few months ago I bought my first dcc controller and overall I’m enjoying having sound in some of my locos.
Hi Richard - great to see you back in the garden and wonderful the railway has seen it through so much wind and rain! This is super-specific, but I for one would happily sit down with a cup of cocoa and watch a whole video on how you'd sort out undulations / bumps in the track to make the running rails photo-realistic. A spirit level and small pieces of wood? I think it would be hugely satisfying to watch! Also, do you weather 0 gauge outdoor track the same you would indoors 00? Best of luck with your wonderful railway.
This has to be the ultimate model. You mention the black 5 will negotiate 2nd radius, but will it suffer from buffer lock when hauling wagons/coaches at that radius?
Good to see you back with the 7mm layout 👍✌️💜😊 Lovely loco too Richard💜💜 As you might recall I'm experimenting with RC too - for similar reasons. Interesting to see the Fosworks system too though, as I've dabbled with Deltang and similar. I've subscribed to your friend's channel now too👍✌️💜😊

Hi Richard, I really missed your updates on the garden railroad. I often wonder. Do you have any plans for building more tracks past the station for longer runs with the trains?
Most gauge 1 'electric' loco's run on radio control, because it's so difficult to electrify the track, and the live steam loco's drop a lot of oil and hot water. Seems pretty bullet-proof.
