  • In this Episode we take a look at Train Techs internal lighting for my GWR coaches. We add a number of passengers so we loose the ghost train look of the layout.

Given the limited visibility, I used the nasty cheap figures from the Fleabay, but had to paint some more muted colours on some of the more Portillo-clothed patrons. It’s just way way too expensive to use anything else!
Thanks for another great video Tris

I agree the bachmann ones are pointless for this kind of project.

Usually with my GWR coaches I just paint the seats in blue for 1st and red for 3rd and then apply a dark wash or something to the wooden bits (currently I use citadel chestnut ink, but its hard to find and very expensive, luckily I still have a pot left but I don't know how long it'll last)

I'm glad you painted the inside, there is no point in installing internal lighting unless the interior of the coach does not look as good as the outside. It is also quite amazing how quickly a small packet of figures disappear inside a coach.

Hi Tris. I have also used battery powered coach lighting but with latching Reed switch which you can operate by waving a magnet over the Reed switch (they can remain on in the station). I also added passengers reading newspapers and shopping bags on tables and as you pointed out it adds more realism to your layout. Thanks and regards Barry.

    Hi Tris.
Great idea of populating the coaches and an even better idea is to install lighting. However, when I painted my coach seats, one or two passengers came unstuck. This is because the layer of paint in between the figures and the seats interfered with the cohesiveness of the glue. In future, may I suggest you 'scratch' a circle of paint off the seat where the figure is going to be positioned. It certainly works for me as it removes the necessity of having to pull apart the coach and reattach the unseated passengers.
    Hope this helps.
    Paul. 👍

Great video Tris. I did something similar with my coaches but didn’t think of painting the interiors. I used the one with the latching reed switch operated by magnets. It does take a time to put the passengers in, I used packs from China which were quite adequate (and more Importantly at the time) cheap. They certainly created the desired effect. Thanks for sharing. Roy.

Hi Tris, great video. Here is my top tip; If you have any old Airfix GWR Autocoaches you can give them a massive boost. Buy a 5 pack of Sharpie Ulta Fine red permanent pens (the double ended ones). Strip the coach down and wash the body in soapy water and let it dry, Use the ultra fine end to colour the droplight frames. Let them cure for a week than go over the red with a second "coat" re-assemble and a few days later the effect is stunning, Cheers dude keep up the good work,

A rapid response from you, thank you. The question of battery life, humm. I like lights but I have spent an inordinate amount of time flaffing about with various methods to cracking the problems that emerge once one has achieved a result, only to find out more issues thereafter. I see with your ploy a degree of success that succumbs all the failures I endure. I will buy some of those :-)

Certainly makes a difference, Ive used the cheaper figures in mine and they do look better toned down a lot instead of being really brightly coloured, the other things I'm in the middle of doing is adding flush glazing, really cheap per coach and make them stand out even better :D

Good video and the lighting and passengers do set the coach's off nicely!
When i put lighting in my coach's i found it very tricky to get the coach apart and also found they didn't go back together quite as well as they should have.
Do you have any tips for this?

That’s a good question but it doesn’t stay on all the time. It sits on for about 30mins and turns off. I’ll be able to report back once I’ve learnt a bit more about It.
