What I’ve done while doing automotive bodywork is to use fiberglass resin as a thinner for body filler. You might can thin a small amount and brush into the mold to help prevent air bubbles on the surface. I also used the thinned filler to fill pin holes.
Amazing, I purchased a 3D printer one year ago because of a simple ESC tray that wasn't available for purchase. It turned out to be an amazing tool. Part of my New Year's resolution was to learn CAD. I am still at beginner level however being able to just design and print something I need is amazing. This is right in that vein of being an awesome tool and I absolutely love it. Thanks for the video.
This type of stuff goes hand in hand with 3D printing for sure! I have some plans for my scale nationals builds that will combine printing and vacuum forming!
@@HarleyDesignsInc Definitely looking forward to seeing the progression And what innovative ways you use your tools to customize your RCs. Keep up the great work.
Wow beats the heck out of a heat lamp, a wooden block with a bunch of holes drilled in it setting on a box with a shop vac hooked to it (Thanks, Popular Mechanics Mag outta the 70's) Love your stuff, my tuber frame truggy owes a bit to you for it's existence. After I saw your vids on how to fab your own tube frame, I built one. Then another, then about three more till I got the damn thing right. Now it's 6 1/2 pounds, low, angled skid, Vanquish all through it. As always, thanks, and have fun.
Finally learning the use for all this. Watching all these styrene videos I started seeing these in use. Never knew what it was for when you first talked about it on the SCX24 budget series.
I also build scale models and a vacuum form machine is a vital tool for custom builds. Same principles here, just bigger! 👍 Going to be an amazing rebuild!
Never seen a gallon of Bondo mixed at one time. This a process I’ve wanted to try but I can never seem to find a body to copy since I tend to make oddball trucks. 😁 Maybe one day I will get a large vacuum former to replace my homemade one.
What is the detail like on the bottom of the piece ? You may be a few steps from getting a detailed piece by making a mold of the detailed bottom ( if it is detailed ) and then turning it over to make another mold. It’s like you are now getting a negative instead of a positive finished hood. Takes twice the amount of material but the finished vacuumed piece should have the detail you want.
That’s a good question, but this seems to be the normal process for vacuum forming. This is so that the material stays the thickest for the majority of the part I believe. This is basically the same shape as what someone like Proline would use as well.
I was thinking the same thing. You’re losing so much detail - or should I say the detail is underneath the body since you are forming the body against the mold which is on the underside.
I've always used MDF or HDF for bucks. After watching your video, I'm thinking that it's time to try something new to me. Thanks for the inspiration Josh.
Very nice work. I've done some casting myself but smaller scale 1/24 scale model kit type stuff. I've used plaster to make my sculpt then using silicone and resin to make the part. I have not used Bondo to create a Buck but then again I don't have a vacuum set up. I wonder what the advantages or disadvantages for using Bondo vs resin?
So what is Kyle gonna do with your chassis?? And is Kyle gonna go into production with more Karnivore chassis?? Great job on the hood and showing us the process.
Vaccum form looks good josh! Got a question for u josh. Do u happen to know if theres any other place besides fb to get scale nat tickets? Askin because i dont do fb. Would be very helpful if there is. May have to get a buddy to pick them up for me if not. Thanks!
You could, but the amount of effort it takes to do it really wouldn’t make sense if you can just buy a replacement. This is best for custom applications really.

Awesome job! I picked up a vacuum former a couple months and it’s a great addition to the hobby, so much fun.
That’s a rad way of doing it!
Wow 👏 Josh you really did this the right way and this video is a great tutorial on how to vacuum form the right way.
Great work HD, I have so many things to try in this hobby! Keep up the good work.
Glad you did a video on it I was interested good video
Man that is cool. It's a bit ahead of me, but is definitely interesting.
I also build scale models and a vacuum form machine is a vital tool for custom builds. Same principles here, just bigger! 👍 Going to be an amazing rebuild!
Holy plaster of Paris Batman really cool Josh
This hobby is endless! Just think of the possibilities! Great job!👍🎯

I’ve never mixed that much at once either!
A gallon of Bondo? Well you've never been to Tijuana. Screw chicken wire over the dent, stuff it with newspaper, and coat it with Bondo.
Great video! I need to recreate some older designs for my race truck 😁
Watching the process remind me of art class. It was a informative video.
Thanks
My wife was definitely teasing me of “crafting” all day.
Great video thank u 4 all the hard work u 2 put in from v&b speed a new rc community ✌
This was great to watch thank u
Man I think I'll try building one. Looks great. Thanks for the info.

Wood definitely works well but I never would have been able to replicate this shape with wood!
Badass Josh! Turned out way rad brotha🔥💯🤙
Killer vid for a killer looking front clip. Cant wait to see what you come up with in the future 🤜💥🤛
Very nice Harley 👍, awesome tutorial on how to vacuum form
Maybe a cab and bed sides are next !
My next project is Jeep based!
That's really interesting and an awesome tool.
Job well done!
That was awesome!!!
This is awesome!
Nice DIY
Looks good 👍
So so so Awesome
Please make a Topkick body. They stopped making them. And it is the best of all time.
Cool! Have you made any Ripper hoods using this technique?

Excellent!!!
I want to make a Nissan Xterra lexan so bad. Been in the process of designing
great video
Masterfully 🎉🎉 😅💋
Very cool
Awesome dude
How would you build a custom body based on cars from the 20s or 30s like Auston 7 chumming, Ford model T's or Bugatti Aquatic.
So what is Kyle gonna do with your chassis?? And is Kyle gonna go into production with more Karnivore chassis??
Great job on the hood and showing us the process.
Now that hoods are available, I’d bet he makes some more of them.
My car will be coming back to me soon though, I’m excited to have it back!
Badass!
I have this body still. It is painted for my mt-410 but never ran.
I would have paid good money for it before I made this hood 🤷🏻♂️😁
Awesome
Reach out to kydex holster makers for info on vacuum former's
Awesome. And .60 is considered hard body
So damn cool.
Vaccum form looks good josh!

The tickets will be for sale on Eventzilla, so you don’t need FB. But that is where the event link will be posted.
Would be cool to see some wood carve a rc body then lexan mold it
Awesome! I have a clear brand new hummer body still that I want to sell.
If it would been before I made a new hood, I probably would have paid $200 for that body! But now, I’ve already got what I needed. 😁
thanks for video, i building audi RS Q e-tron model body, and upload video to my channel as soon as possible
Could you take your favorite lexan body & follow the steps you did to duplicate your favorite body? Say TRX-4 body?
You could, but the amount of effort it takes to do it really wouldn’t make sense if you can just buy a replacement. This is best for custom applications really.
Can you write down all the sweet excuses to tell the wife why a vacfromer is a necessary tool I'll need to go over them before sending 1k 👍✌
I’m turning that into the question of the week for scale news 😁
How high were you towards the end of this video? Feeling that edible kick in haha.
Haha!! It was actually just 11:00pm and we had been working on that project all day. I was just tired, although it’s not that different of a look.
That is wickid rad
I rather use plastic panels
