    Along the way, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Preston Minster, Fishergate Baptist Church, The Harris Museum, Preston Town Hall, Preston Cenotaph, Preston Bus Station, Friargate, The University of Central Lancashire and St. Walburge's Church.

    I live in Maine and have for the majority of my life but grew up in Preston, most of the places you pointed out i remember though much has changed, the iconic buildings are still there. Not many know of Preston in the USA, though i once had dinner at a English Pub themed restaurant in Portland that had hospitality interns from the UK as servers, I was there with my wife and i asked the server where he was from in the UK, he said "a town you probably have never heard of", then said "Preston", to which I responded oh! the river Ribble, Moor park, Harris museum and Preston North End. He was stunned, I smiled and told him i grew up there. Lovely tour of my old hometown, Thanks.

    Much interesting information in this video. Fishergate which is so quiet on your walk often resembles the Rambla later in the day. The video might have been enhanced further with a quick walk down Winckley Square and onto Avenham Park but still nice to view this.

      Thank you so much! I'm glad you found the walk around Preston an interesting watch - indeed this was an early morning walk where people hadn't come out and about just yet, but it's interesting how the city changes through the day :)
      I'm sorry I didn't make it down to Winckley Square, but I also have a separate video focusing on Avenham & Miller Parks, which you can see here if you'd like: th-cam.com/video/2gmf8EGszjE/w-d-xo.html
      I hope you enjoy that walk too - and thank you again for watching!

    Another marvellous , educational video .Lovely churches and architecture in general .I thought we were going to end up at Deepdale ! I saw a match there in the late 70's but can't remember much about the town itself other than the locals being very convivial . Are you a fan ? My team ( Oxford ) with be playing down the road in Blackpool tomorrow - and hoping for a miracle ! By the way , we have a Pedder Street here in Hong Kong . Believe me , the only thing in common is the name .

      Thank you so much - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, Preston is a fascinating place indeed :) Sorry we didn't manage to make it all the way to Deepdale, the video might have been a little too long that way!
      I'm actually a Spurs fan - so a long way away from Preston, but I wish Oxford the best of luck against Blackpool - they might be able to turn around the deficit :)
      Interesting to know about the Hong Kong parallel with Preston, always strange to see those international connections, even if they are only by the name!
      Thank you so much for watching and your very insightful comment!

    I have mixed feelings about it. Growing up in the 80s there in Preston it was a relatively safe place, you got people who reckoned they were 'hard men' but it was mostly just bravado. Back then as a 10 year old you could ride the main roads on your BMX with no helmet, walk down the disused 'old railway' into town alone, stay out late until 11pm and there would be no trouble in the suburbs (Lostock Hall, Bamber Bridge etc). It wasn't the most cosmopolitan place in the world and you got kids who befriended you who were the sons and daughters of factory workers, bus drivers and the typical working class but there was a decency to people and when you did get to know them they would invite you into their homes etc. These days there's none of that, people are very mistrustful, more selfish than they were back then. I lived in central London and now a different European capital bang in the center and kids just stay indoors and do not mix or see one another during home time, it's really sad and I remember as an infant (with my mother around) playing in the streets of this European capital with other kids in the very late 70s, you don't get that here no more. Preston was a bit dull I remember at the pedestrian level - like most places but there was interesting nightlife there as a late teen, Lord Byrons, The Warehouse AKA Raiders, The Railway pub on late night 'lock in' license.
    I only have regrets, not forging deeper friendships and maintaining them (something weird happened at 16-18 years, I left for Runshaw college and people that you had known for years that lived 14 minutes walk away suddenly didn't want to know you). The old 'I want a bird be with a girlfriend and that's all that's important and I'll sell you all down the river to get one' old simp thing was rife and old friendships didn't mean a damn. I got fed up with the place, there were loads of morons also and people loved to be cruel in a joking way; Toxic Terry springs to mind, the irony was that most mocking Toxic Terry were at the same level as him more or less just not addicts and not quite hit hard times like he did.
    When I was accepted to university I said to my mother that you could sell the house and move somewhere else if you want, I don't mind, I sadly have no more ties there and she did and I never went back to my Preston suburbia.
    I did hear of stories of people in my school year having died, one who went to the same university as me had some genetic heart problem, one returned from the gulf war mysteriously died at home, another died in a car crash at just 17, another never recovered from taking a drug called 'whizz' popular in the 90s and here I am with a vivid and clear memory of them all as if it was just yesterday since I last saw them.

      @john hopokins Very strange. I'm in Spain also, been here for 7 years. In Madrid and it's so much better here than London, Preston and Manchester.
      It's not a utopia, don't get me wrong but standard of living is far better than in all those places.

      @davedogge2280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@selenkiy8147 I saw Toxic Terry in Preston around the open market around 4-6 years ago and he gave me a look and I was wondering, did I know him as a kid ? Did he ever go to Lostock Hall High School (now Academy) and was he in the year above me circa 1987 ? Was his name 'Terrence Ashcroft' ? I think there was a Terrence Ashcroft in the year above me at Lostock Hall Highschool - he was a bit of a fantasist (a 'nana') or at least that's how he was regarded by his peers in the same school; peers such as Steven Cooper (chunky fella, quite jokey and blonde hair) who always said jokingly that 'Terrance Ashcroft was a bit of a divvy'. If it is Terrence Ashcroft I'm sorry as wasn't a bad kid but he did seem the type who could easily be swayed into drugs or some other bad life habit.

    • @selenkiy8147
      @selenkiy8147 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davedogge2280 his name is Terence ashcroft yeah so probably. He goes round asking people for change, hes barred from some places in the city centre Mad how some people like him can abuse their body all their life and still be alive, whereas others live clean but get bad luck, going way before their time.

    • @davedogge2280
      @davedogge2280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@selenkiy8147 That is REALLY sad then. In that case I'm pretty sure I knew "Terrence Ashcroft" AKA 'Toxic Terry' at Lostock Hall High School. He was in the year above me and he would have graduated in 1988 (first year to sit GCSEs instead of O-Levels I think) but I'm not sure if he moved schools during his final year there.
      I always remember 'jolly blonde, chubby kid' in the year above me "Steven Cooper" (who had a Commodore 64 and that's how I knew him) saying jokingly to me that it was a pity that Terrence Ashcroft (Toxic Terry) had not been born a day later as then he would have been in my year and not in the one above me with him - Steven Cooper. I dunno if Toxic Terry "Terrence Ashcroft" had an 8-bit home computer back then I never swapped pirated games with him back in the day but I suspect due to the Steven Cooper connection he may have owned a Commodore 64 or Commodore 16.
      At Lostock Hall, I do remember Terrence Ashcroft as being a bit of an attention seeker by just saying slightly 'fantastical' things; he gave me the impression that 'he was 'not all there' or had a vivid imagination that he wanted to express or both.
      I never knew him outside of school or where he lived or heard any bad rumors about him or his family but he was a good kid, he wasn't violent or verbally abusive, he was rather polite I remember.
      Like I stated before, I only knew him 'in passing' on the school playground. I do wonder what drove him to be so self destructive ? was it some serious family problem, a tragic event, did he mix with the wrong people after he left school ?
      What bugged me about the entire 'Toxic Terry' thing in Preston is that people in Preston just 'loved' to have some 'character' to point the finger at and laugh at, not taking into consideration the reasons why that person is damaged/down on their luck etc and to go out of their way to help them.
      Back as early as 1989 I remember "Ricky Buttons" at the school gates offering £5 for our shirt buttons, at the age of 15/16 back then it was obvious to me that this person was severely mentally ill, yet kids then and the majority of the Preston community just laughed at him for years after (even setup a Facebook page for him like Toxic Terry) but were wary of him as his behavior exhibited fetish for peoples' buttons and this coupled with requesting them outside of the school gates would certainly warrant criminal investigation these days. Also with Ricky Buttons I remember rumors of (allegedly) some punks abusing him in Preston bus station lifts in the 80s, I dunno if this is true or fabricated but it may have steered him down the wrong path. I know that Toxic Terry is no angel, I read on the internet that he got aggressive with some girls on a Preston carpark or side road once and some guy had to intervene (I think I read that in the PNE forums) but I certainly think that quite a few in Preston haven't helped him by 'egging him on' to be this local character / celebrity jester. At the end of the day I wish him all the best, I haven't lived in Preston in decades and don't know anyone from there anymore but I hope that the support mechanisms are better now than they were back in the 80s for these types of troubled people.
