    Bradford was really nice up to and during the 70s with its ABC Cinema and the Odeon twin cinemas next the Alhambra. Then it went downhill with multiple demolitions, it lost its beautiful library near the Media Museum, the ABC went and the Odeon became a disused major eyesore. Never go anywhere near it now.

    • @brythonicman3267
      @brythonicman3267 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The demise of that once amazing library is indictive of the pattern of continued decline that Bradford has undergone over the years.

    Sadly, I am unable to agree with many of the comments on here: I was raised in Bradford in the 50's, 60's and 70's and left the city in 1984. Back in the 70's I remember smart department stores such as Brown Muffs and Busbys, upmarket clothes shops, classy jewellers and quality furniture stores ect. I also remember my my father stating how Bradford was heading for bad times. The business rates were sky high pushing business away at a time when they should have been attracting new business due to the demise of the textile industry. The highway infrastructure was archaic compared to say Leeds and instead of investing in refurbishing Victorian arcades, Kirkgate Market and other beautiful old buildings, they bulldozed them down to be replaced with characterless concrete structures only to pull many of those same buildings down a number of years later. Once smart suburbs with neat gardens and nice respectable local shops are now scruffy and unkempt and replaced with tacky takeaways or boarded up.
    The metropolitan population of Bradford is 528,000, yet I know of no other city of comparable size in Britain that has such a small shopping centre, I now live in Lincoln which has only 120,000 people in its region yet the shopping centre is twice the size. A few years ago I revisited the city centre for nostalgic reasons and I was both shocked and extremely sad at the demise of the place. I still get back there now and then to visit family and driving through the ring road from the M606 to the outer suburbs, most of what I see is nothing short of depravity. '
    Bradford was once one of the richest cities in Britain per head of population, now it's one of the poorest. Some people in influential places who made decisions about the future of the city have a great deal to answer for, although many will now be deceased. The legend of the ghost at Bolling Hall who appeared just before the city was attacked in the Civil War in 1642 who said " Pity poor Bradford" possibly wasn't referring to the imminent attack after all!

      I agree with your comments. Leeds is a far superior city and enjoyed more investment. I was born and raised nearby in Batley and Birkenshaw area and seen it’s demise. It once boasted two railways stations and visited Foster Square many times but it’s all gone. The city center looks scruffy compared to Leeds and that’s a crying shame. And now with global warming how the old trolley buses would be a welcome sight now. All gone. A city that desperately needs huge investment to attract new industries, commerce and retail. It’s a tall order.

    • @brythonicman3267
      @brythonicman3267 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@davidwilliams5863 Blinkered? It'll take more than cycle routes, a pedestrian link to the interchange and park and ride to regain it's prosperity. As for the "gems" most of those bar a few have been bulldozed. The blinkered and some say corrupt ideas of the past city fathers are why Bradford has imploded into such a depressing and deprived city.

    Many thanks for taking the time to film and upload this. Bradford born and bred, but left in 1977 when I was 17. I have travelled all around the world since then and have lived in Melbourne, Australia since 2013. This brought back many memories. I still recognise many of the places I visited as a young lad, although clearly some serious remodelling of parts of the city centre. Great to watch and read the commentary.

    I can understand the sadness people feel about the wanton destruction of beauty in Bradford having been shown pictures of the "old" Bradford e.g. the old Kirkgate market. Also listening to people talk about places like the Marshall and Snelgrove arcade and Busby's up on Manningham Lane. I remember when the "60's eyesores"were pulled down in 2004 and an international street market was held not long after - with the smell of garlic and oregano around me and continental outside dining tables with people laughing and chattering I saw what Bradford could be.

    I used to live on Manningham Lane and Thackery Road in Bradford. I don't think the terraced houses I lived at on Manningham Lane are there anymore. I do remember them cleaning a few buildings of all the soot, I hate to think what the ratio of people were that had respiration diseases were back in the day. Left Bradford in 1977 aged 14.

    • @LetsWalkUK

      It's very true that there are some harsher effects of the city's industrial legacy, but Bradford has really grown strongly in the modern age, and its buildings are even prettier now cleaned of soot :)

    I like Bradford, usually stay there for about four days two or three times each year, but not since the virus struck; maybe again later this year. You didn’t mention the old Odeon building, what’s happening to it now? Also didn’t show the memorial to the victims of the Bradford City stadium fire.
    I can recommend the fish and chip shop near the City Hall.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! I'm sorry I didn't mention the old Odeon - there's just so much of note in Bradford! My research tells me that it's now used as a live music venue, having been disused for a number of years in the 2000s.
      My apologies for not showing the memorial for the Bradford City fire, but it's absolutely an important part of the city's history. Thank you very for the feedback :)
      Also the fish & chips sound nice!
