    Lived here nearly 10 yrs now and noticed last 5 yrs or so see it decline and now Mecca bingo has gone. Would not recommend a holiday here anymore town centre just depressing but residents are lovely even though lots of Snobs Chavs.Agree with some comments about the town needing good spruce up as streets are so filthy with overflowing bins sticky pavements Sefton just takes money out of town

    Had a lovely holiday here in 1997, we were complete strangers ( South Africans ) when we arrived , left with some wonderful new friends. What a lovely place. Thanks South Port.

    One of the UK’s best Victorian seaside towns in need of TLC. My family and relatives have lived here for the last 150 years at least!

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a great place but you're right it's not quite at its heyday - I'll certainly be heading back there one day though because I loved it so much! :)

      Thanks for putting this together. Part 2 to include the marine lake, pier, pleasure area perhaps. Let’s see Sefton Council invest in preserving this wonderful place and attracting businesses and tourism.

    I miss the little gangs of sparrows that used to be all over Southport. As a kid in the 1960s they were around your feet when we sat on benches, even in Lord Street. Fond memories of those cheeky sparrows!

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ha ha wonderful memories! I think the sparrows might have been hiding away on this day considering it was raining a lot - hopefully they're still out and about when the sun is shining :)
      Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - this may not have been the sunniest or busiest day in Southport's history, though the town certainly has a real appeal whatever the weather, in winter and summer as you very rightly say :)
      Thank you so much for watching!

      @Ethiopia Hindu but youre Ethiopian? Thats calling the kettle black, don't you think? No pun intended

    • @stevendaniels8652
      @stevendaniels8652 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ethiopia Hindu hey, i appreciate the sentiment, but honestly, i was just commenting on the video. Brotain is trashed. They let all the ungrateful asylum seekers in and now england isn't even really white anymore. Its just a socialist country run by the greedy and power hungry.....there is no "Great" Britain anymore. It's a second rate country. Its sad, but what ive seen on tv in the last 20 years makes me glad im not there anymore. Take care

    Thank you for this.I cant believe Southport is still relitively unchanged from when i was a lad. Holy Trinity Church where i was a choirboy, even down to the Outfitters used to buy school uniforms. Thanks for this!

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - I suppose it's nice to see that some places stay the same, especially somewhere as pretty as Southport! Holy Trinity is rather impressive from the outside - I'm sure it was even more so inside :)

    14:05 St George's United Reformed Church, I think, is no longer used for worship. It was put up for sale in June 2022 due to only having a tiny congregation. You then make a confusing comment about such a 'new', but 'big' and 'so much history' filled town. Eh?

    Wonderful. So many happy excursions from Wigan to Southport when we were kids. My brothers and sister crammed into a speedboat on the 'lakes' was the 'treat of treats'. Such fun in innocent times...

      Ah those are wonderful memories! With all those things to do in Southport a day out must have been an absolute treat at a young age - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some nice memories :)

    Lots of memories there. First impression was - "Oh look, it's raining" :) Wouldn't look right without a shiny road and puddles... Still, whenever I get back from Australia, Southport is a must visit place. There's something special about it. Lots of things actually - inclding the lifeboat house a mile or more from the sea!

    A lot of people in Southport do not accept the Merseyside label. It's historically a Lancashire town- and a very attractive town it is too.People's Yorkshire identity in now defunct psuedo counties like Cleveland and Humberside is generally acknowledged. But it should also be accepted that many retain a Lancashire identity in so called Greater Manchester and Merseyside. Pretty sure that the Thatcher government abolished the Metropolitan counties like Merseyside. Last point: Southport is more than 15 miles north of Liverpool city centre.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting to know! It certainly makes sense that these newer counties since 1974 haven't quite overtaken the identity of historic counties like Lancashire with thousands of years of history - and the people of Southport certainly should be proud of their Lancastrian heritage :) Perhaps it's the Merseyrail train that put the town in Merseyside, we may never know!
      Thank you so much for watching - I really hope you enjoyed the video!

    • @TODMORLANCS
      @TODMORLANCS 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LetsWalkUK Whitehall bureaucrats with no connection to the town made the decision. Just because a Mersey rail train serves the town from Liverpool, doesn't make it a Mersey town! From a geographical standpoint, Southport is at the southern tip of the Ribble estuary. The River Mersey current fizzles out at Formby to the south.[ Formby is another town worth visiting, preferably not on a wet October afternoon with the town looking like a ghost town]. You seem to be sensitive to Yorkshire peoples identity, being careful not to label Middlesbrough a Cleveland town, or Saltburn a Cleveland resort. Perhaps you could do the same for Lancashire towns like Bolton or Southport .

    • @therespectedlex9794
      @therespectedlex9794 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm pretty certain that the metropolitan counties happened in the mid 1970s. That was before Margaret Thatcher was PM, during a Labour government.
