MY FIRST DAY UNDERWAY ON MY NEW BOAT!

    In previous videos, we searched for our perfect boat. Just a few weeks ago in mid-February, we found her. This week we're on our 1976 Tayana 37 (CT37) Taiwanese build designed by Robert Perry. She boasts a teak deck, roomy quarters, and needs a lot of work, and the projects have begun! sirenwilliams@thesirenslog.com
    This week, we're cleaning the boat and the tanks, and getting underway! We've left Halifax Harbor Marina in Daytona Beach, FL, and we've traveled south to Ponce Inlet. We're traveling with large dog, a small tender, an iffy outboard, and our rigging can now be sailed.
    We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!
    We do hope that you'll subscribe and follow along!

      Oh man. Hahaha Yeaaaaah, and we’re the types to be willing to show those problems and I’d be willing to bet there are a lot of channels that don’t show every problem. We film “everything”, as opposed to setting up to film a specific thing so… we may end up being known as the people with a ton of problems but I can assure you, we both know, after many years of working on boats, everything we’re going through is minor and completely normal for an old boat.

    My water tanks on my 35’ sailboat was used for showers and washing dishes only , we would add a cup of bleach to the tanks every tank fill , but my tanks were plastic if your are SS DONT do bleach ! I would drain the tanks by opening the lower feed line to save my pump and electricity and pump into the bilge and add bilge cleaner to,do,two Jobs at the same time !

    Money saving tip: The damp rid powder is calcium chloride. When it is time to refill the cup and basket type, we use prestone driveway ice melter from an auto parts store. Same stuff, just unscented. Being in Fla. you probably would have to order it, but it is around $10.00 for 10lbs.

    Love your videos, and know how you feel , I had a 35’boat for years , but a lot of your problems are just not thinking and moving too fast , slow down and make a list of things to,do everyday and before bed !! It will help , my wife always had a list and she was my Measure twice cut once ! 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, we had to move fast! We only had a few very short weeks to get the boat ready to travel over 1000 miles and we both have jobs we have to get back to, and the marina was supposedly doing work on the docks and we needed to leave no later than when we did. SO it was a LOT to do in a very short amount of time.

    When I was in the navy, when we steamed back from Japan, 2 days early, so the deck apes could repaint the port side because an admiral was coming on board. (USS Dixie (AD-14)
    The dekk apes regularly holystoned our original (1938) teakwood decks. When the ship was scrapped the teak was bought out for reuse. The decks were 2" thick!

    Try a strong blend of occaclic acid / water mix (comes in a powder form) and let sit after scrubbing for at least 10-15 minutes, maybe 30 - that will make your decks bright. You could also use the Teka A and B process but that is very consumptive of the soft fibers. ALSO - scrubbing in the direction of the grain gets the dirt out and also the teak... as hard as it is going across the grain is best for longevity - the scotch pads are really good for that type of work - there are no bristles to deck wreck.... Suns out Teaks out! 🙂

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks!
      Yeah the wood grain thing I actually explained with text on the screen. In day to day cleaning, I’d always go against the grain, but with teak cleaner, you are supposed to go with it.

    to get rid of the mold spores buy a small ozone generator, open every door inside turn it on and leave for the day. do this a couple of times and it works. We used in our camper and sailboat.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s definitely an option, but when traveling, that’s impossible because we can’t rent one to get it to the boat. We don’t have a strong mold smell or anything, just an old boat smell. I like it. It reminds me of other boats I’ve worked on in the past. But honestly we’ve been using this little thing for a while and it works!

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well, the story they gave us was that they were going to be doing work to the docks and couldn’t give us more than that additional week we did earlier this month. 🤷‍♀️ Who knows. They may have just wanted us out of there because it wasn’t until we bought the boat that things came to light for them. The diesel leak they blamed on us had started before we bought the boat, and there was a small black water leak that had been going on as well. As soon as we got the boat, we found and tackled those problems, but that’s when they realized they were happening so I think they blamed us, even though we were cleaning up the mess of the previous owner. I don’t know! Maybe they really did need to do some dock work. Does it look like it?? Hahaha

    • @ChLachapelle
      @ChLachapelle 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don't take it personally, I would say that the reason they could not accommodate you is that there are too much demand for this marina. Five years ago there was a fair number of slips available. Then after 3 hurricanes went through Daytona in about 4 years, all boats from St Augustine to New Smyrna wanted to be at HH because it is so well protected in bad weather and there is now a waiting list. With many more boats docking here, I don't think that they increase the staff, which makes it more difficult for them to accommodate people. BTW I really enjoy your channel, you guys come across as quite genuine people and your music goes very well with your content.
