Great video, Daniel! I loved getting to see parts of my life from your unique perspective. Thank you soo much for documenting my boat projects, journey & struggles! It HAS been an isolating experience on my own and as the only woman in this boatyard for the past year (that I've seen). I really hope this video inspires more women out there to go it on their own, alone and make friends along the way (I really want some solo girl buddy boat friends 😊) Can't wait to see what adventures you get up to next!!!

At 65, female, I built my own house. The funniest thing was people’s reactions. Took me 1.5 years while living in my van…It was so fun. Congratulations Nicole…women can do anything if they want and are willing. Apparently a lot of sailors are sailing 27’ boats around the world. Wind Hippie Sailing, there are several. No one expects women doing this work because not many women do this work. I also do mechanics and I always get weird reactions. People eventually respect you for it. Nicole sounds like a very experienced sailor.

Well done. Truth is many people of all ages and gender are doing the most amazing things and we never get to hear of it. They don't know how to film and edit and if they try it's very difficult to get noticed on an already over-cluttered yoututbe. Just do it for yourself, it's not important for others to see it, it's a great feeling for you to know that you can.

Yup! I rescued a 22' Southcoast about two days away from being chewed up at the dump, thinking it would be a lot less expensive than buying one. It most probably was not. Five years in and it's just going out since I got her floating again for the second time next week. It will be another year before her sails go up.

I've been watching Nicole's channel for a while now. She never fails to amaze me. It's been a struggle from start to finish, she's on her own, does everything on her own, hits seemingly insurmountable hurdles, has a little cry, pulls herself together, and moves on. She is relentless. When she eventually sets off on her "new old" boat, I fervently hope she will be able to "relax" and enjoy the lifestyle she's struggling so hard for to achieve. In fact I am a little mystified she doesn't have more followers (yet), she's definitely one of the more personable channels out there.

I have been following Nicole for a while; she is a remarkable young woman. As for your question about other young women doing their own work - I've seen a far amount of women HELPING their mates work on boats, including my daughter who's spent the last three years helping rebuild a 52er, but I have never seen a woman doing nearly all of the work by themselves. By the way, I have a friend who finished out a BC 28 from a hull/deck kit and sailed it from Seattle to the tip of South America and back over a two year period. They are very seaworthy and good sailing boats but rather tight inside for big people. This boat, despite being in poor shape when she bought it, will be a huge upgrade over her old boat.

Amazing, I started sailing early in life on Uncle John's 37ft Crocker schooner. She was built by Ted McIntosh in Dover, NH as a family project. I was photographed in diapers playing in mahogany planning shavings as we faired her topsides. Then on to racing at the age of 7 in turnabouts. Graduate of Maine Maritime Academy where I raced collegiately. Employed in the US Merchant Marine Service for 35 years I spent countless months in both US Shipyards and Foreign, mostly Singapore and Korean, yet Dubai and Cape Town. Nicole demonstrates, throughout her channel a can do attitude, patients, and aptitude to get her rebuild process done. We all are very grateful for her channel and the knowledge received by her. This is an epic journey we all can enjoy. Thank you Daniel for including us on her extensive refit. The boat of Artha came out perfect.

I am in my 60s now and yes I still do 80% of my own work. But bottom paint jobs has been passed on to boat yard labor. Comes a time when watching is fine. Do it as long as you can!! Actually Nicole, is lucky to be ale to have the freedom etc. to actually "work" on her boat, and get all the patron support benefit's etc. to pay for it all.. Smart girl... Luperon is one of the best places to be left alone to do whatever you want with your boat ..(unless they are stealing parts off it..) . Parts and stuff may be hard to get.. But it' possible.... She's not the only woman that has refined and redone a monohull I did a trymaran. I grew up with a sailing family lived on one for 13 years. Sailed after I moved on but moved ashore as my other halted hated the ocean. Trying to get back has been the hardest path.

Wow! great project, it must be quite the roller coaster trying to get though things down in the DR. I look fwd to following along, and wish you all the best! Dengue sure doesn’t help, I got it while anchored in suva, no ac aboard that boat at that time, nasty…

Wonderful work. Wow. My wife and I did similar projects together. And that’s a lot of work with 2 people. We cruised for 26 yrs. Some good choices there. Looks like the windlass is a Simpson Lawrence 555. Slow but dependable. Love composing heads. And a Spade anchor would be an excellent choice. Better than Rockna.

My sister did this. Bought a really cheap boat in Florida, no money, took it to a sand spit, waited for the tide to go down and scraped and painted the bottom. Next high tide floated the boat and next low tide did the other side. Many other things she did, it was pre youtube so you just don't get to hear about it.

Many people say there's something they can't do, and telling themselves that often, which makes their brain to believe that is absolutely correct, so they would never try. Moreover, some people don't like change.
However, some people are different : Open minded, seeking new knowledge, learning new skills as needed,, ready to work hard, persistent, determine and outright stubborn (I *want* to do this), which is good when things aren't going the way one want it to go.

Really cool interview and boat tour. Thank you both. One question: If you have to wait to setup your rigging, until you put the boat in the water, because it flexes... should one adjust the rigging to allow for the flexing when taking a boat out of the water, or does it not matter, once the rigging is setup correctly?

AD, you brought up pirates in the video and after watching sailing videos the last few months and learning most sailors don’t carry fire arms the idea of a water cannon came to mind an because I’ve owned and operated a pressure washing business for the last 30 yrs. I know the main component to possibly building one would be a high pressure pump and some brass fittings even scrounging from an old fire truck I’m sure one could be made with some trial and error which would be great fending off pirates and keeping them from boarding your boat that is unless they had a fire arm .. Any who if I ever have a sail boat I’m definitely going to make the water cannon part of my self defense equipment . I know some high pressure pump are capable of up to 20,000 psi and they are a relatively small pump that doesn’t take up much room or weigh a lot .. After all they’re pretty much on the same lines as a pressure washer just extreme PSI. Anywho good video .. sincerely, ole man Romeo from land locked Kentucky.

Though they only need about 800 to 1000 psi.
I imagine 20,000psi will require much more power than one would find on the average cruising yacht, more research required!
