    that is a beautiful little ship and obviously was well loved. it is so nice to see a boat that was sailed rather than just wasting away in a shipyard somewhere. she could be sailed away the day after you'd buy her without any apparent major projects that would open up a can of worms that would keep you in the yard for months or years. good luck with whatever you decide.

      The Michealson is within my skill level. That's why I was interested. I didn't want to spend the time. That's why we decided against her even though her layout and size were perfect. I'm ready to sail, Siren wants to do a few more things before we take off. Stay tuned. We have a Tayana 37 coming next week. Spoiler, she's gorgeous.

      Yeah, a part of me is disappointed we didn’t get that Mikelson. I could literally do a whole video on why I’d buy a Mikelson over a Formosa, and I love Formosas. That boat could have been our ticket to getting the right boat sooner, and the cheapest way we might ever find, BUT, even though I’m the buyer, I need Hal to be on board with whatever we buy because we’re a team in this and I need his mechanical skills. lol

    It is fun watching over your shoulder as you look for your next boat. I like this boat esthetically - she's a looker, for sure. The interior is surprisingly spacious for a 36' double ender (double enders always lose interior space because the last three feet of the boat is "pointy" - which doesn't gain you any interior space - so this Norstar is basically a 33' design with a waterline of just 25'). I don't like the teak decks - surely you will have to replace them at some point in the near future! The Perkins 4-107 sounds mighty tired - probably time for a new long block. The standing/running rigging needs replacing. No mention of the sail's condition, but most likely they are tired too. You could put a lot of money into this boat and still end up with what is basically a 33' pocket cruiser. (Where will you put the dinghy?), but you both seem pretty excited about her and she makes a lot more sense than that Mickelson!

    Good morning guys, well, appreciating what I have seen, I see that the first North Star boat is a beauty, it has an encapsulated running keel, which provides a lot of stability in waves, there is meticulous work to do on the main deck, superstructure and hull. both living and dead work, it has 70% wood and 30 fiber, it is NOT a boat for more than 2 people, it must be 38 or 39 feet. IT IS A BEAUTIFUL DESIGN AND A RARITY THAT IS NOT MADE ANYMORE. MY RATING IS NO REPAIRS 4⭐. 30k is a fair price. P.S. That screw-top hole you saw is for placing flares there. the old but handsome perkins engine. Nowadays you can reduce the navigation instruments to a regurgitated 11" tablet full of essential nautical apps, a radar, AIS, starlink and navigation safety. DO YOU KNOW HOW BEAUTIFUL IT IS TO ANCHOR IN MAKEMO ATOLL in the Tuamoutu Archipelago Polynesia French...? 💯💫

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, no doubt. We know the repercussions of buying a boat with an old teak deck, but we aren’t totally opposed to it IF it hasn’t already caused major damage, and also if the price reflects the work involved. So if we get something like this needing a deck renewal, it has to be at a price that allows for that.

  • @Cheers_Warren
    @Cheers_Warren 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    That’s a great looking body for the price, it looks like fiberglass skin over wood coachroof with wood side sand probably decks are fiberglass over wood. Is the hull fiberglass? The painted handrails need a lot less Maintance that varnish !!! (If you paint over varnish you can go back to varnish later).
    It’s got a lot of gear too!
    That gulfstar all fiberglass looks great too.
    Boat #3 Morgan looks like a lot of boat for money too! At $7k too? You could spend $10-20k on any boat better to start with a cheap one!
    Tayana 37 could be nice
    You have some great options too!

    Beautiful Boat. Other than the Engine it all looks like some cosmetic issues which is to be expected. New Paint job and some wood work would make her look really nice. If Hal is good with the condition/maintenance of the Engine than this one looks like a real nice option.
    The Morgan looks rough, nice price, but probably needs over $25K in repairs to make a live aboard boat.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yep, We never went back to either of the other two boats we looked at on the video, but we do love the Norstar, and it comes in at a price that we can make her really amazing, and still have money to fix the VW’s, maybe buy the property in Puerto Rico, etc. It’s not a boat we’d keep forever, though. It’s a bit small for us, long term.
      Hal is a fantastic mechanic and wasn’t concerned about this engine at all. This is a really solid option.

      @TheSirensLog  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We did too! We couldn’t get it to start, but it sounded like it wasn’t getting fuel and we didn’t press the issue. We all felt like it was something simple we may have been overlooking, and the owner had ran the boat less than a month ago with no issues, and even if it didn’t run or had serious issues, at the price we could get it at, we knew we could afford a new engine if we had to, but wouldn’t expect that to be the case.

    Hey Siren, she may be too far away from you guys but if you're considering chartering I know of a 60ft schooner built by a very well respected British shipyard, really strong boats...she is currently on the hard in the Carribbean and at a pretty good price. Been laid up for a good year or so, so will be a project, but the owner has now passed away. I've not seen the boat in maybe 2 years but she was a lovely vessel.. • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, we don’t *need* a blue water boat right now because we plan to upgrade if we go this small, however, I’m the type of person that wants a tool. I want an encapsulated keel no matter what, and I want a boat that can cross oceans comfortably if I decide to, even if I don’t currently plan to travel beyond the Caribbean in this one.
      As you probably know (but for anyone else scanning the comments) the Tayana is a well-known classic Perry model that is also a double ender, all of which were modeled after the old Colin Archer designs. I can somewhat attest to the feel of those boats- I worked on and sailed a 1925 Colin Archer and they have a good strong feel about them.
      The Tayana comes with issues and has the original 1976 teak deck- so there’s no way around it- that deck leaks and that deck is done and needs to come up. My question is- how much damage has it caused and how quickly do I *need* to rehab. The rigging is old and should be replaced before any serious sailing is done and the chainplates have leaked and caused rot. A lot of the things of that boat don’t work and it’ll be a question of whether or now we can make things work again- radar, auto pilot, water maker, hot water heater, electric windlass, etc etc etc…. So the boat has good bones but needs a refit. We don’t know how cheap we can get the boat for so that we can do that work but we’re going to show it in next weeks video! If you’re not subscribed, feel free to join us! If you love these boats, you can always share the videos! Thanks!

    Those port windows are awesome. The two light prisms on the bow could be an issue if a problem occurs but are cool as well, could they be replaced with anything similar. Replace the wenches in my opinion, and the standing rigging will be replaced. I really like the living quarters. The Perkins can be rebuilt to new condition by a machine shop if needed, I am sure you noted the engine attachments, it looked like a new alternator, does this engine cool with sea water intake or a keel pipe? What do the diesel tanks look like?

      Thanks for watching! I wouldn’t replace the prisms. Those things are usually so thick, I’ve never seen or heard of one breaking, and it would take someone slamming an anchor on them to break them, I’d imagine. That old Perkins runs but lots of oil- Hal is a really savvy mechanic so he was feeling comfortable dealing with that. Worst case, you replace the whole thing, which is totally doable at the price. Overall, a great little boat!! Be sure to subscribe though, because we show the Tayana 37 next week and we’re choosing between these two boats.

    This Nor'star 32 may have 36 feet of sparred length, but she is a Colin Archer-type 32' overall design, much like the ubiquitous Westsail 32. There were 100 times more Westsail 32s built than these Nor'stars, many finished as kits. I used to own Hull No. 32 (1971), the first one with a doghouse after the 31 Kendalls built with the flush decks. My boat had specifications similar to the Nor'sea 32 that you're looking at. She was safe and sea kindly, for sure, but she wouldn't point worth a damn, and the weather helm made steering exhausting. The relative lack of ballast in the keel vs. the weight of the rest of the boat -- as on this Nor'sea -- had us burying the rail whenever we went to weather in a blow. Think: major stream rushing down the side deck. Speaking of side decks, I pulled up all the teak and rebuilt the deck core. There were hundreds of screws that needed removing and screw holes that needed filling. It was a hell of a project but it turned out well.
    I suppose you've already put in an offer either on this one or the Tayana 37, but I'm going to say that since the Nor'star was built on Puget Sound, I'll bet the construction is of a higher quality than the Tayana built in Taipei. It seems as though the original design called for a stepped-down cabin top forward of the mast. The one that you are looking at has a flush deck there. That will give you some welcome real estate forward while handing lines or sun-bathing, but Hal is going to be swearing all the time from hitting his head down below. Get him a helmet. You'll like the dinghy davits over the stern while in calm waters, but the dinghy will be safer on the foredeck during a passage offshore.
    This beamy boat has plenty of deck space, nice high bulwarks, and lifeline netting to give little children a safe area to move about. She's also capacious down below and her appointments are oh, so gorgeous! And, look at all the storage capacity. Those berths both port and starboard are where you'll want to sleep while underway.
    This boat will take you both to Bora Bora in comfort. Well, I've said enough for now. Happy buying!

      @TheSirensLog  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Hey, Thanks for watching and for the comment!
      Yep, I agree with everything you’re saying and carefully considered that. That’s one of the first points I’d made to Hal, was that she was a sound, US build, and relatively new compared to what we typically look at, being a 1991.
      We totally understand what we’re getting into with teak decks, and we’d tried to avoid them, but it is what it is. I can actually make use of them for photo packages for companies (something I’ve made a small living on for decades) while they’re there, which will likely pay to have them redone. That’s one advantage to an eye-catching boat for us, is that my content creation business will continue to make us some money so we can work on the boat. We don’t depend on TH-cam for that. It’s a weird way to justify a teak deck, I know, but it’s real. 🤣
      Hal obviously has the head room that he wants in the Tayana 37s. I couldn’t find a Westsail to even look at with him but I’m familiar enough with them anyway- but would have been nice to show Hal. When my ex sank the boat we lived on on the hook years ago (I was away doing a delivery and the anchor line snapped from rubbing in the 3’ river chop and she blew aground and he had to get off the boat), he replaced it with a westsail and they’re truly fantastic boats. I did get a little time on that boat.
      In the end, I’m a connoisseur of Taiwanese vessels. That’s where my heart has always been- though I have a love for many boats of many styles from many places. Of course, I have to use logic when making a purchase, as well as heart. Haha. When the budget dropped just enough that we decided to just go as cheap as we could for a temporary boat, and try to get bang for buck, I immediately found every Tayana 37 on the market in Florida. Hahah It’s such a great model for its size and personally I think it’s Bobs greatest achievement. While I haven’t spent time sailing a Tayana 37, I have spent time on the original Colin Archers. By original I mean, I worked on a 1925 wooden CA, the RS 40, Frithjof Weise, built in Norway. It was part of the rescue fleet there, as they were designed to be. Sailed that one from Florida up the eastern seaboard to Gloucester Mass and worked on her in England- an extraordinary vessel. Once in England, we spent weeks, the owner and myself, re-wiring her for Europe, doing woodwork, wire wheeling and beautifying every piece of metal on the boat… I love the feel of wooden boats (for obvious reasons to anyone whose ever spent time at sea on one) but- not in Florida. I’ll admit we never found great wind any of the time I was on that boat, but just the outline and weight alone gives the two boats a similar feel.
      How do you feel the Tayana 37 differs from the Westsail or even the Colin Archers in terms of sailing in heavy wind?

    • @lexieprice1414
      @lexieprice1414 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I choose Gulfstar 41 Center Cockpit over Kendal 32.
      Kendal was with the trunk cabin and was one of (I think) 2 boats which Kendal built after been purchased by Westsail, and they built her for Westsail as a test boat. Found relevant information ""W32 #37 Misty was the first of the four Westsail 32's built as production boats. W#32 and W#33 were built as prototypes by Kendall for Westsail, and the sales were from orders that Kendall had for complete boats with a trunk cabin, instead of kits with flush decks.""
      Gulfstar is much roomier, has very difficult to manage prop-walk, but tracks and points under the sail in a spectacular fashion! Just needed opening blisters on her belly, filling them with some glass and West Systems epoxy, and 2 coats of Interlux Project 2000E.

    • @shisaisama
      @shisaisama 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I see that you're not going after the Tayana 37 willy nilly, but that you have experience with the original Colin Archer design and perceive the development of that idea here in this boat. Good. The T37 certainly is a gorgeous boat and I suspect she'll have the roominess that you'll need for many years to come.
      I see four Tayana 37s for sale in Florida on Yachtworld; I can only assume that you are interested in the one in Ft. Pierce. Correct me if I'm wrong. If she is ready to go offshore, then you can sail her around Key West and up to your home on the panhandle, but that will be no small undertaking, especially if she's not seaworthy. Otherwise, you can pull the stick and truck the boat over land, but that will entail a different sort of hassle and expense. It looks as though this particular boat has wooden spars, as did my Westsail 32 when I bought her, so definitely check for termites and rot once you lay the mast down. You can rewire the mast and refinish it easily while it's horizontal.
      As to your question, I would expect the T37 to sail better than any WS32 in heavy air. She has all the weight you'll need for comfort, a longer waterline for speed, a full keel with a decent ballast-to-replacement ratio and a finer entry than the WS32 for higher pointing. You'll also like the self-tacking staysail when single-handed in a blow. Given a choice between only rhe Nor'stsr 32 and the Tayana 37, I would buy the Tayana 37 in a New York minute, despite what I recently have said in favor of the Nor'star. Nevertheless, I'm simply looking at pictures while you are seeing and touching the actual thing. I'm sure you and Hal will make the right choice between the two. I can't wait to see next week's video!

I wouldn’t expect the guy catching bass to get a different boat and go catch tuna. Our channel never called itself a sailing channel. But I can, for the most part, gauge that based on what we can see.
      1. The size. It’s only 36’. This is still on the smaller end for cruisers. She boasts only one berth.
      2. The teak deck. It’s a 1991 and the teak deck is that old, which means that it’s nearing the end of its life and will need to be redone in the next few years, even though it looks fantastic and doesn’t *appear* to be leaking badly or causing major damage, but I didn’t bring a moisture meter with me.
      3. The market is crashing. Boat sales have been stupid slow this last year, boats are sitting longer, and dockage and insurance are going up. When an owner lives out of town and is paying $1000-1500/month just to have their boat sit up for sale, they start dropping the price to let it go faster.
      All of this on top of having an older engine, dated electronics and such…. There just aren’t a ton of expensive assets on the boat driving up the price, which is fine! It makes it a great boat for someone to get into and add to the boat how they want. We prefer that. Of course, I always recommend people have a survey done, and I always recommend a haul out to check the bottom, but I have a good feeling this is a good, solid boat!

      I'll be somewhere on a small island where I can be free. I was lucky to be in Florida during covid. If I had to, I'd sail back to Florida.

    I'm writing this message from my GS41CC. Get the Gulfstar! She is a ketch! For $30K? Why are you keeping looking at something else?

      @@TheSirensLog I don't know what year she is. Mine is 1975, second generation (what later will be MKII). But they were built in Florida and designed with the Caribbean in mind. They got a bad rep perpetuated by people who have no idea what they are talking about. From my 2 years of owning her I can say that I didn't like dealing with vertical blisters which is a sign of rushed laminate. But otherwise I love her to bits!

      Oh I agree with you! The gulf stars are fantastic boats, and I love that they’re made in Florida. The CSY’s are another Florida build we made sure to look at as many as we could find. I love them boat and both are solid boats. We actually forgot to set up to look at this one because we were so focused on seeing that Tayana and just fell in love.

      The listing broker was present. That is how it is done. You have to look at everything to know what you want to offer. We should do a video on how the boat buying process goes. Alot of people don't seem to understand how it all works.
