      Thanks, lol. I can use caulk but it’s not typical caulk. The consistency is very thick and dense, and the seam areas aren’t the typical size, some are very thin, so it’s impossible to get the point inside the seam and down in there. You just have to do what you can. And everything is on a time crunch.

    ❤ Don't worry. Be happy. I was thinking. That is dangerous. I thought you have to unscrew one plank at axtime. Drill out the holes put fiberglass resin with fibers in each hole. Then reattach the teak. It is a massive massive job and no guarantees. Then I remembered some kind of roofing stuff plastic or rubber that you can pour on roofs and roll it out. There could be cracks in the wood too. Let me check that stuff out.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh heck no, I could never put that on my teak. I’ve seen people do it but… what’s the point of keeping a teak deck if it’s covered in paint? I’d rip it all off before I did that. To keep it, I’d either have to A) rip it off, fix any rot in the core (in Feb this year there was very little moisture in the core) and then tar the teak back down, or B) Make sure the core is truly dry and then pull all the seams and screws and re screw and recaulk.

Hopefully you'll get your boat back home soon, so you can do complete new decks and proper repair all the core & substrate damage.....only then, you can enjoy a dry boat! A new sealer from Asia is being advertised on TH-cam. The stuff is clear and applied with a brush or roller. Polymers have come a long way, and this stuff seals wood, concrete, etc. I have been in a similar position and love wood boats. Good Luck.

      Interesting. Yes there are tons of products for sealing the wood but I’ve always just used the traditional stuff for the seams. @@michaelvanwinkle7919 Yeah I wouldn’t advise anyone to do it, but I knew what I was doing when I bought the boat. You’re doing fine. One step at a time - do what you can within your budget and abilities.
    Keeping water from coming into the boat is a good priority.
    Might not stop all the leaks, but if you can limit the amount of water coming in that’s a good step.
    Nothing wrong with your thought process and actions.
    You may want to purchase a larger tarp that you can setup and remove easily to give you a better opportunity to work in all weather and keep the maintenance actions dry.
    You’re doing great - keep at it.

    because it seems you are getting more leaks underway I'm curious if you are having more leakage near any inboard shrouds then ? how was the moisture level at the deck around the shrouds when you had the boat surveyed ? below the teak is the cabin top balsa cored usually and susceptible to rot which creaps along the balsa grain. every time the mast is under load port to starboard it will have a tendency to stress the hull inward if cabin top /deck ids compromised the deck might leak

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well it is, hence the reason the chain plates need to come out. That leaking has been happening for decades and the chain plates are rusted through. The balsa core didn’t read much moisture in February, when I bought the boat, but in the Florida summers…. It’s expected. The deck will get pulled off anyway. I’m really thinking it’s worse now because the tarp that I have over the boom is directing more water into certain areas of the deck, and onto some fittings. The fittings are causing most of the leaks, actually.

      Yes that’s what I often do too, but apparently didn’t that time. It was in a ziplock bag though. Either way, when the stuff is sitting in 90+ degree heat for months, it doesn’t help because the tube heats up and it hardens. She wanted to play. Her name is Dora. I say- We have to take the time to chase the butterflies. Life is too short, way too short. I’m always learning when I watch your videos. My number 1 favorite. Are you in the moorings at Fleming Key area? Probably seems like forever when you need to get back to your Marina for anything. When will you be continuing north? Thank you so much for your videos. I’d like to close with this. Yes I am a hopeless romantic
    I have studied many times
    The marble that was chosen for me
    A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor
    In truth it pictures not my destination
    But my life.
    For love was offered me and I shrank
    From it’s disillusionment;
    Sorrow knocked at my door but I was afraid
    Ambition called to me but I dreaded the chances
    Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life
    And now I know that we must lift the sail
    And catch the winds of destiny
    Wherever they drive the boat
    To put meaning in one’s life may end in madness
    But life without meaning is the torture
    Of restlessness and vague desire
    It is a boat longing for the sea
    And yet afraid
    GG
    We’ll meet someday out there. Until then
    Stay the course my friend!!

    On my tayana I only had the teak deck in cockpit and decks not cabin top.
    When I took it off most the screws came out. Some broke off.
    I filled all holes with epoxy. Then just sanded it and painted with all grip. Then I put down treadmaster on the entire deck and cabin top. Looks like a pro did it. Took me 2 weeks solo and 2,000.00 in 2008. I had the teak in cockpit re done in cockpit new in 2008 for 500.00 in phuket thailand.
    It's now 16 years later and just today I had to re epoxy a few corners of treadmaster.. But the treadmaster is still as good as it was in 2008. Just not as clean but looks good.
    No maintenance for 16 years. Till today. I spent 90 minutes .
    I woukd use treadmaster again but use teak color not the desert sands I used. Just for looks. Teak still looks good too. No screws.
    You're going to have to rip all that teak off girl. Sorry but it can't be saved.
    You're water could be comming from the toe rail. I replaced mine also in 2008. And that was where all my water came from. At sea mostly but in driving rain too.
    Also those windows are leaking into the cabin top. You got to take them all out. Re bed them too. The sooner the better. It's not fun.

  • @JoeKelley-f2e

    From tearing up the teak on our tayana 37 it was not the seams that caused the leaks. There is a ton of adhesive under the teak between the seams and where water can get inside of the boat. the problem is the thousand of screws that was drilled through a perfectly good fiberglass deck in order to hold down the teak. Water is seeping in around the screws that then runs to wherever it can go. Also spending time rebedding fittings that go through the deck will help more than sealing the seams.

    • @TheSirensLog
      @TheSirensLog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JoeKelley-f2e Thank you! Yes the fittings are truly worse than the seams. There are still some areas I believe are coming from the teak deck area but I can’t pinpoint them but you’re totally right. I think it’s getting underneath the boards and running around. I know some of the screws are the issue, and most have bungs with a good seal on them but work had been done to it a few years ago with new screws and I have no idea if it was done correctly, and they didn’t cover the tops of those screws, and on most, there isn’t room to cover them because of the type of screws they used. Frustrating. So for now, all I can do is just cover what I can and then this winter the deck will have to come off.

  • @ValiantSailor
    @ValiantSailor 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Sadly the correct fix is tear the teak off the deck so you can then fix the cabintop and deck. I run from old sailboats with teak decks. What's happening under the teak is water is entering the holes in the cabintop from all the screws holding on the teak. The water is seeping into the balsa core and that core is rotting. I'm sure you have already been warned of this. There is no easy fix.

    Until you have time to disassemble your hatches and properly reseal them, could you use old innertube, rubber, cut, and strips to temporarily make a temporary seal? First time on your videos. Know this was a temp job but the best sealer in the world ain’t doing much for that deck - its toast (literally). Huge job to redo properly but so are most replacement options which would spoil the character of the boat. Most of the teak I could see looks recoverable. I wonder if it is not the deck but the penetrations that are most of your leaks. Love the bare feet and hard working hands. That sealant is hell to work with, gets on everything, your self advice was good. Red hair and freckles is my favorite look but be careful of that sun.

      Ahhhh I already deal with frequent melanoma.
      Yeah the “plan” has been to pull the deck off and fiberglass, maybe even tar the old deck back down. However, I’m still open to the idea of letting the deck dry out completely (winter) and then pulling all the fittings, which are a huge culprit, then rebedding the fitting and putting new seams down and sanding and then semco. That’s what I’d like to do. It won’t last forever, but if I can get away with that for a few years, it’s worth the trouble.

    I forgot to tell you this: Check the entire deck for the number of screws you have, once you have counted them, you will buy the same number of teak dowels and replace them.
    Once there is no water leak under the deck you will wash it with fresh water, UNDUZIT cleaner with a brush and once it is very clean and dry, you apply Teak or linseed Oil with a brush, not with a roller. THIS WILL NOT ONLY PREVENT WATER FROM GETTING THROUGH, BUT YOU WILL LONGER THE LIFE OF THAT TEAK DECK WHICH IS WHAT REALLY SELLS A TAYANA 37' 💯✨

    Calking the seams is not the answer... the water runs down inside the core and drips four or five feet away from the problem. Also, depending on the type screws they used to secure the teak planks. Mine were wood screws and they were a real problem. @TheSirensLog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Can’t have a tarp on deck for the Florida storms. I’ve tarped it occasionally but it needed to have all these loose seems pulled out and redone. Much of the leaking is actually coming from the fittings, though. But yes as with any teak deck, the leaks run through the deck to the nearest opening so it’s always difficult to find the location. The goal here was to get all the open areas closed and then reasses. This is a temporary fix until I can pull the deck.
