In a previous video, we explored a 1987 Mikelson 50 sailboat. Known for their luxurious teak woodwork, these Taiwanese boats have a rich history in the sailing world, and are loved by many. Only 18 were built in Taiwan for Mikelson in San Diego, and we were lucky enough to find one sitting in our back yard.
You told us to hold out, to not buy the boat, because it was too far gone and we could do better. We didn't listen and we put in an offer of $30k, which the bank turned down because they were sure most of the systems on the boat were functioning well.
Today, we put the boat in the water and sail it to the marina and check many of those systems.

I'm glad Hal listened to his feelings. Those are life experiences talking to you. Wishing you the best for your search.
That is true. Thanks so much!
Dale and Laurie Arnold used to have a beautiful Formosa
I'm glad Hal's instinct was to walk away. I ignored my instinct and let a surveyor sweet-talk me into buying a 52' - and discovered a myriad of problems that we're still trying to correct three years and another hundred grand later. (Never trust a surveyor whom the broker recommends!) So kudos to Hal and you for letting reason overcome emotion and looking for another, more manageable, project boat.
Thank you! Oh no, that sounds like a nightmare. So sorry you’re dealing with that, but hey, it’s a boat! Hahaha that’s always the risk. Gotta love it. And brokers are not allowed to recommend surveyors!! That’s illegal.
Good call Hal that looked like too much work for the money. you'll find the right one sooner or later. Kev in UK
I still think we can get it at a good price. Maybe something like $70k. It’s listed at $139k now. Still good bang for buck. Interior in good shape too.
That sounds more like it and you will have a a few beans left to make it a1. good luck and fair winds.@@TheSirensLog
I own a Taiwanese built boat and this one is great. Everything good in life needs a little work. Awesome sailboat!
Thank you! And you’re exactly right. We’re not afraid of a project, necessarily, we just want to be careful we aren’t getting into a total basket case.
Was really surprised at how good the engine sounded and how good the sails looked. Needs work but whoever puts the effort in will have a major cruising platform at a reasonable price.
You're right! I'm still in favor of buying it. It's Hal that I have to convince. But whatever we end up with, it's important that Hal is in total favor of it and loves the boat because he will be doing most of the mechanical work on it, and I don't want ANY "I told you so's" lol
Dang it I accidentally sent that from our other channel!
Never Ever ignore strong gut feelings. It’s the universe trying to tell you something important. Always trust a strong gut feeling !!!
I think so too. 😕
And never never never trust a fart!
I’m not at the end of the video yet, but your broker needs to do a better job, letting the bank know he’s got a real buyer at 10k and it’s just the buyer they need! someone he’s going to fix this sucker up and that they need to cut their losses and let this one go cause they’re paying more and more money every month that goes by and if he can’t pull it off walk away the boat still be there in a year.
Well it’s listed now for $139k
Awesome to see another video. My 2 cents, If you have a bad felling. "WALK AWAY" That's the Holy Ghost saying DON"T DO THIS. But I also freely admit, what I know about boats, registers on the "Negative Scale". I have been looking at a few boats, & have been relying on a few cruiser friends for simple answers. I was told that The boat needs to fit where you are going to be using her. I would be in the Pacific NW to Alaska / Aleutian Islands to Japan area. lol funny considering I don't even know how to start and drive a boat. But hey, "SQUIRREL". If it don't feel right, it ain't right. Blessing to you all. Merry Christmas.
Hahah thank you!!! And Merry Christmas! And you’re right- the boat has to fit what you’re doing and that’s why I liked this one. It was the right fit for multiple reasons, but it just may not be the right boat.
The Holy Ghost has a lot to answer for so I would not be taking too much notice of her/him
@@daviddrew4000 You may want to watch your words, Just saying. In Matthew 12: 31-32
31: Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 :And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

@@haltarpley9237 I am no ones judge, However there are just some things you don't do. some things, that there is no way back from. I've done plenty of bad and not so good things in my life, but Going against the Holy Ghost /Holy Spirt. That ain't one. That's a one way trip I ain't going any where close to.
She gives me captain Ron vibes
What I really didn’t like is the engine room is cramped and impossible to get in and fix anything 😮Anxious to see what the next boat will be !!
You’re right about that!
You’ll know the minute you step on the right boat. Good luck.
I agree! Gotta feel it. We got some backlash for talking like that in past videos but it doesn’t change our minds. The first step is that we HAVE to love it and feel it. The second step is that it has to make sense!
A comment for the youtube algorithm. Boats are very cool but old VWs are investments and will float in a pinch. Thanks for the videos.👍
Hahahahah Aweosme. 🤣 thank you.
Bugs float ,buses don’t.
@@Pocketfarmer1 I will keep that in mind!!! Hahahaha
This vid has been posted for a month, it is the second I have watched. My two pennies worth says that, it is a boat that is on the line between being totally acceptable to you and totally unacceptable. That being the case I would reject, you have to maintain your enthusiasm through renovations and modifications, when, you are spending big money! Good luck, keep looking your bound to find a good boat in the end.
Hey! Thank you for watching. Yeah, we found a boat! See our latest video
Any decision is a step forward in your journey. This one didn’t steal your heart. It’s not the right one for you. Hopefully someone with the will and time and money will buy this beauty and make if the boat it should have been all along.
I sure hope that they do!!!
Change the Fuel filter, engine oil, trans fluid, pump impeller, add Zincs. most(like all) hoses will need replacemehnt--plan on changing all thru hull valves and hoses-----Mikey
👍🏼
wise move.
Buy it!
I voted for it! Hal won’t do it.
That thing is a beauty
Thank you!!! Please consider subscribing!
Sure thing I will subscribe,
Wow, I’d run from that vessel. Even if you do most of your own work, I would guess that you will have to sink another $100k in it. Makes for good TH-cam content like Expedition Evans videos, but personally I’d keep looking. If you are looking for a heavy duty boat with a full keel I’d look at the older Endeavors made in the Largo plant. They made great boats back in the day….
100k? For what?
I keep my eyes open for endeavors but they aren’t my favorite. But we are still looking. We don’t mind a project but we want to feel good about it. Honestly I still like the Mikelson and I would have it but I need Hal to love it because he’s the mechanic lol
@@TheSirensLog understood. I crewed on a Morgan 42 sloop rigged vessel back in the day. Nice boat. Maybe you can look into the 42 or 44 versions? Also be wary of Iron or steel encapsulated ballasts on older full keel boats. I have seen the wet rusted messes once the boat was opened up. On an old boat on the dry, it’s always going to involve a lot more time and money than estimated. lol. Good luck in your search. Live the dream!
I have nearly always regretted ignoring my instincts. Go with your gut. Frequently this is your subconscious brain registering observations your conscious brain ignores.
I looked for a year to find my sailboat, traveled from Va to Fl to TX searching. When I found the right one, I knew it, and so did my gut. 3 years later, no regrets.
Well said!
Yes!!!!!!!
Didn’t buy it though
Love the bus!!!!!!!! Trust your ..his..gut
That’s the truth!
I think it would probably be a good boat for the amount offered or a bit more, but it would need a lot of time and money to be worth 100 or more.
We agree. She’s listed at $139k now! Hal doesn’t want the boat and whatever I buy, I need him to love it too. I’m buying, but I want it to be our boat. If he doesn’t love it, he will hold it over my head when something goes wrong and I’m NOT doing that. Hahahah
@@TheSirensLog Totally agree! We pull a camper, and I want to get a used 27' class A motor home, but the wife strongly says it is used and too long. We can't afford new, and it would still be too long and they don't make shorter, so we keep hooking up and unhooking...
Yeahhh Ya just do what ya can!
Wood work would be beautiful if done right, but it’s a royal pain to maintain and that boat clearly hasn’t seen love in a long time. You would spend way more money just to get it livable than you would have to on a little bit newer boat of the same size
Yes, but the Mikelson is in much better shape with a lot more working parts than many of the other Formosa 51's on the market within our current budget. We don't mind projects, we just don't want and complete restoration on our hands.
Well, well.....that's an entirely different, entirely more interesting prospect....very interesting....but that mast step, man....and what else?
Same boat as it ever was... The bank was set on believing that most everything worked and they did. The boat still needs a ton of work, no doubt, but at least it comes with some good, working assets now. We made the offer based on the fact that none of that could be proven.
The main sail would be very difficult to stow and deploy because of the Bimini too.
It’s furled in the mast. No problem with stowage.
Thanks, yeah, it “was” an in mast furler system but now it’s on an external furler which I don’t love. They’re known for tweaking masts. That’s something I’d love to change but at least it’s handy for now.
It’s on a furler that I don’t love.
It really is a beautiful boat. But in the end, you need to listen to your gut. There will be other opportunities. Best wishes on your continued search.
Thank you so much for the comment and for being here for it!!
Got to trust youre gut. A boat needs to give you that emotion you cant live with out it. Cause she will kick youre ass all the time.
That’s the truth!
Kyles was the same , worth every penny
Good to know!! I’m so fearful this one is a basket case. Eeehhhh we will keep looking.
SV = Sailing 'Volkswagen'? : The Siren's Log ... 😅 Glad you passed. The more you looked, the more worked you saw.
Hahaha I did joke with a friend about just putting one of my VW’s on pontoons and rigging some sort of gaff rigged system. lol
@@TheSirensLog 😂 that would be priceless ... maybe an episode about that, a 'How to' for the DIY'er's. I did recently see a post on Fb where one 'created' a VW van into a helicopter, so why not have a VW boat to land it on ... 🤣
Trust your gut feeling, if you are not sure 🤔 don’t do it? Go for it only when you are confident
We are taking that advice!
I had a bad feeling the first walk through.
Yeah we knew it was risky from the beginning. We both had mixed emotions the whole time, but if we could get it cheap, then it may have been worth it. The systems did mostly check out. I didn’t check heads or water systems, and it needs some new batteries, but for the most part, the boat is in working order. We still question the electrolysis issue, and can’t get the fuel tank to switch over, and the pilot house is rotten but…. For a good price, we could work with that. We’d considered maybe making a $65k offer if everything worked but at this point I don’t think we will. I do think it’ll get fixed up and be a good boat again! It’s not the worst, that’s for sure!
Haha, at least you have fun together. Is Bentley Billy now, not having a home? 😋🤟
Hahaha We’ve been calling him Wiley Coyote, but yeah he’s still here! Still looking for a home and having no luck. He won’t be allowed in any of the marinas and in a lot of Caribbean countries so we really can’t keep him.
Right, he is stuborn. You can ask Seth if he needs a guarddog for the harbor 😁Btw, did you have a look at that motorboat in your backyard. If you do a temp flip or a business-deal on a motorboat that doesn't mean you aboard your dreamboat. It looked an obvious one to check out at least as it was too cheap. I already learned you don't like a dream which is too far (St Lucia) and ready to sail but this is easy 🤗@@TheSirensLog
Gut instincts are the culmination of life experiences... Only a fool ignores their life experience... Always trust your gut...
Yep!
Has the owner realised that his 22 magnum is missing? I would probably have done the same, without filming it though. 😊
Well I didn’t find a 22 magnum but I sure took the ammo for mine. Lol
i am no expert but, i does seem to have deep rooted issues
It does but it can all be fixed. But Hal votes no.
your man right it's sceaming I'm going to sink in the water don;t buy buy it
It’s not actually, lol.
What do you say Hal???
Hal says no!
Hi 👋🏻
It seems to me that you both are looking for a different both style.
Belly is more into motor boat and you sailboat.
Am I right ?
Hahahah, You're not wrong! We do have reasons for going sail, though. It was my plan for many years, and I'm the one buying the boat, but Hal needs to love it because he's definitely the mechanic on board. hahaha I want something that he feels good about, and something he wants to take care of. That's super important to me. We do have somewhat different taste in layout and whatnot, but we have learned to meet in the middle a lot, and then also, he has jurisdiction over some things, where I have jurisdiction on others. We both love motor yachts, though, and sailboats! Overall, we're boat people and I've worked on both and I have lived on both, and I appreciate both! We seriously considered the 1986 Marine Trader Labelle that I have listed (there's a video on it on our channel) as a temporary boat. We aren't planning any serious travel right away, so we "can" go smaller, or go power for a couple years and then upgrade to the larger sailboat later if we want. We have a plan but we aren't afraid to change it up if we want.
well im sorry but i talked to him and he said you and your wife look like a good snack, i said yup. now to ward him off toss in some white home made bread, you know the stuff you make in a bread maker that weighs as much as a tank, he will eat it and sink. then you can hoist up the sails and haul ass at a blistering speed of 4 knts. but i have also told himto makesure andnot use hotsauce lol
Uhhhh
Should buy a new one you are to fuzzy)
Honestly I’m in favor of buying it. I want the boat and I feel like it’s the right boat. Most of the systems work, the interior is almost pristine with the exception of a few areas, the layout is perfect for the long term plan and it’s a boat we could make our own and keep forever. In the beginning, we just didn’t know if all the systems worked, and frankly, I can’t pay $130k for a boat that’s been sitting on the hard for over a year with that many unknowns. No one should. But once we could see that everything worked, I was for it, but still a little deterred by all the work we’d have to do for how much I know they want for the boat. Hal is the one that put his foot down and said no, and it’s based on a gut feeling. I have a gut feeling that says we are missing out on the right boat if we let it go. But Hal can do a lot of the mechanical and electrical work so I need him to love the boat. If he doesn’t love it, he will hate working on it and won’t be into it, and I really need him to be into it.
Well, the right boat will come along , keep saving those Gold Backed U.S. Dollars when they come out next month, also when NESARA fires off before April your bank accounts will grow then too, Don't worry or stress you all will be more than fine.
Thank you!! We will look into the NESARA. Haven’t heard of it! I know the market is looking like it’ll crash, so that may work in our favor. Of course some of the boats we are looking at won’t be affected by the market crashing, if they’re in a situation already where they’re at some ridiculous price where they just need to go.
"bad feelings " are your senses adding up the situation and telling you the math is not working . While not always right , trust them to at least go back over everything before you buy .
It is the same if my dog doesn't like you , while I do not take it as gospel , after all maybe he does not like the smell of your dog or something , I do listen to his opinion.
Hahaha yeah true. Yeah I’m listening to Hal’s gut on this one, and personally I have mixed emotions. I sense it being a pain in the ass while also knowing it’s probably the right boat and could be worth the effort because it’s now listed at $139k and most systems work. I think I could get it much cheaper, and if I could get it at $65k, that’s a deal. This boat still has plenty of life! But if Hal doesn’t love it, it won’t work because I need him to be invested in it. I can’t afford this boat without him. I’m the one buying it, but he’s the mechanic. We’re both savvy and have experience, and admittedly still have plenty of things we could learn and skills we could sharpen, but he’s great with mechanics and wiring and brings the man strength to the table that I’d otherwise have to pay someone to do. If he doesn’t love it, he won’t put the energy in.
It appears you're trying to find reasons to buy her but your partner justifyingly is finding reasons not to buy her:) I think it was worth the 30k asking price.
No the asking price was never $30k, that’s just what we offered because it had been on the hard for over a year and they couldn’t prove that anything worked at all. We have it in the water and listed now for $139k
@@TheSirensLog oh ok sorry ! So you bought her ? I know you’re in the boat business - are you selling on behalf of the owner ?
@@stinkintoad No we ended up not buying her, but I’d been watching it on the hard for a while and then finally asked a broker I work under if he knew anything about it and he was actually in the process of dealing with the bank on it so we started looking at it harder. He’s now got it listed. I did show it this morning!
Go with my gut.
HARD NO!!
Hahah Yeah most of the systems worked and she’d show better cleaned up, but… I’m going to trust a gut instinct on this one.
Good pass…. Looked like one that has more ugly under the covers than you see
Yeah probably. Even though she’s listed for $239k and most of the systems work
Are you raking up TH-cam videos, just to get $ without actually buying a boat?
Have you ever bought a boat?
I wish. There isn't much out there in the class we want. Coming up with content every week is impossible. We fully plan on buying a boat. Just trying to find one that we both like. It is harder than you think.
Furthermore, if it as my decision, I'd already own and live on the Mikelson. However, there are two of us and we have to agree on something. Nice try, accusing us of something you know nothing about.
you are not going to bbuy a sailyboat. you have too many issues with all of them. i am sure it is a good diversion. something todo.i bought my 72 choylee motorsailer in greece a while back had it sailed it all the way back to washington state. now it is up for sale. i will keep my 120ft ww2 navy tug.
😂 You don’t know us.
The boat are not going to sink but the ww bus are. Worst car ever. Boat REAL GOOD😊
I can say this! I have two VW busses and they're every bit as much maintenance as a small sailboat! hahaha
@@TheSirensLog got two ww busses myselfe. Lot of work making them going
dont walk run from this boat, wouldnt be worth it at $60k
Check out some of our newer videos. We have already bought a boat.
Why not just buy early 2000 production boats better bang for your money than these old trash
A boat yard manager (in his late sixties) once told me that most boats last about a generation before needing a complete overhaul - and the overhaul often costs almost as much as what the original boat sold for. Engines, plumbing, running and standing rigging, electronics, sails, anchors/chain/windlass, propane system and stove, cushions, etc. - all are generally pretty much worn out after 15 - 20 years, plus all of the fixtures on deck will need to be unbolted and re-bedded - a monumental job. Our boat is a 2007, one owner, never chartered - and we still have had to spend three years and over a hundred grand doing the list I just posted. Most boats built in the early 2,000s are also nearing their expiration dates as per lifespan of gear, owner's who keep them "Bristol" are few and far between. Newer boats are built much lighter, with vulnerable keel grids, but they sure do have wonderful aft cockpits/swim steps. I guess you pick your poison....
I couldn't do that simply because most of those boats simply aren't what I want. I'm a sucker for Taiwan builds, and the intricate teak interiors, and most boats build in this century don't have that. It would be like me trying to sell you on a Kia when your heart has been set on a Jeep Wrangler for decades. It isn't the same beast. Also, boats from the early 2000's aren't built like these boats in the 70's and 80's, and if they were, and they're full keel, Bluewater boats, they're most likely out of our price range. This boat is in great shape for its age, and it'll need an overhaul like any other boat. Newer boats aren't built better, that's for sure, and they'll need the same maintenance over the years.
...to add to that... Production boat like... a Beneteau? Jeaneau? Bavaria? I couldn't ever. Many of those production boats don't even have glassed in bulkheads, and I'd rather not deal with keel bolts crossing oceans. For circumnavigation (which isn't the immediate plan, but will be one day), we want glass on glass, strong, full keel, comfortable, and spacious.
I'm with you on this, older boats are generally built better, and I appreciate a nice classic interior rather than the new "Ikea" bolt-on look.@@TheSirensLog
@@Morrisfactor These old boats especially big ones were meant for long expeditions with a philosophy of heavy is safer. Now the the philosophy is lighter is fast and fast is safer.
This doesn't make the yachts unsafe for being light, they're heavily engineered and tested. Speaking of refits, these youtube channels always under represent the actual resale value of older boats.
well buy something and your righti do not know you. and that was a very rude thing to say. all a person can do is go by the simple process of buying a boat. anyboat get it surveyed and then move on if it is a piece of junk i wish you well i will not be watching your videos anylonger i do however wish you well. hope you make lots of money off of you tube
Oh bye. Thanks!
