Be careful when messing around with that peeling chrome. That shit is like a razor on its edge. Ended up in the ER pulling GM wheels off a Buick, grabbed the wheel by its edge in the backside of the wheels without gloves and it went right through my index finger to the bone. To this day I can't feel the end of my finger and that happened over 15 years ago!
Ouch that sucks and yes that stuff is crazy sharp. Thanks buddy
Looks great almost like black chrome
Thanks
Man that clear smoothed out great, no orange peel at all.
Yea it did. Normally they do on these jobs
Bro I have a set of wheels 🛞 that need to be refinished and I’m going to follow your methods 💯 Thanks Homie 🙏
You’re very welcome
Killer video...... Love the free base coat then the real base coat and tinting the clear to stretch your $$$$$$!!!!!!
Thanks buddy hopefully it helps ya out
Sweet. This is exactly what I was looking for as a fix for some peeling Lincoln wheels. 👍
Awesome I hope it helps you!
Lol I’m here for peeling Lincoln wheels too
OMG, I realize this is an old video but I cannot believe some of these comments. Those wheels are not worth putting all that time into to make perfect. Like you said, it's a budget job, which means you don't have the time or care to make them perfect. You have better things to do. If it was your vehicle, you would have done the same. I've painted over the years here and there and every job I've done wasn't perfect to my eye but most people were impressed. I do not paint show cars or anything too expensive. I totally get what you are doing and I am impressed how nice they came out without wasting hours and hours prepping rims with little value. Some people actually know how much of their time should be used on a particular job. See Vice Grip Garage for instance.
That’s exactly the thought process with this. My buddy owns this vehicle now and the wheels are still the same way after I painted them with no issues
Oh how great It's Not!! Sloppy and very distastefully done.
I’m wanting to do the same, as fast and cheap as possible. I’ll get better wheels later
when shooting filler primer, make sure to put some old lug nuts on the mounting surfaces because the primer will crack and flake off the first time you put the lugs on the car.
Thanks. So far have never had that problem.
Wow. Good job, man.
Thanks
How many coats of primer ? And if going have flaws like you skipped over should one just do the epoxy filler primer from the go on all jobs to not have to revisit if I fully understand and how many coats ?, sorry very new and want to learn and your video is the best as basic and easily explained
Order video but I’m 99% sure I did not use any primer. I never use primer on any wheels that I can recall
They look amazing ❤
Thanks
Good work man
Thanks
They turned out great
Thanks
Wow, you until the last coat of clear I was saying “what a waste of time watching this”
Looks amazing.
Glad you watched them hopefully one day you’ll try a project like this yourself
Great job man especially as rough as they were.
Thanks
That job looks awsome, i need my chevy suburban wheels done but i can't find anybody here in Dallas Tx
Wish you were near us buddy
@@ThePaintPaperHustle i know thank you for the video greetings from Tx
I have some similar maybe worst , so you sand down flakes and pits with 80 grit ? Then smooth and sand down with sponge 320 then bulldog prime, paint and coat. Rite appreciate it good video 👍
You don’t need the sponge it’s just what I had. Bull dog is an adhesion promoter not a primer. Just makes the paint stick to the metal is all. Grit size isn’t really important in a job like this so just try whatever you got.
@@ThePaintPaperHustle thx
@ThePaintPaperHustle ok thanks for reply idk why I thought you primed , so the bulldog and paint is enough rims ,
@Theundisputedtruth for this style job yes it’s enough in my opinion
Quick question... Just curious about how the drum of the wheel gets finished. Sanded to bare metal or do you prime it at least? Is there a special finish to wheels that have a different coating than chrome?
I guess I'm wondering how to tell a customer why the inside of the wheel doesn't look like the beautiful finished front of the rim (new to this business)
Thank you in advance.
I simply don’t paint them. Only time you see the inside is on a larger wheel. I’ve never had a customer say anything in all these years. There has been 2 jobs on larger wheels 22”+ that I’ve charged double the money to do the insides bc they would be seen. And 1 or 2 jobs we did spray paint the insides. I just always tell the customer my $300 price includes faces only.
@@ThePaintPaperHustle thank you so much! You really helped me
We're doing a chrome rim now and I'm skeptical about how it's going to look with chrome spray paint. The drum looks so blah. I feel like it should be polished or covered somehow from the rotary sander marks 🤷
Btw I'm just the office manager, but I want to learn EVERY aspect of this business since we're new to it
You’re very welcome that’s what this channel is for is to help others
They look great, personally I wouldn't think too much of those flaws because black wheels from factory already come out harsh as it is
Oh forsure and these are now covered in brake dust due to not being washed lol
This is crazy good for budget style. Serious love you man for doing this with your own $ etc. I'm redoing factor caddilacs and gonna alter colors and seal chrome if possible..I'll have to make videos to show it
That would be awesome. Thanks for watching buddy. Hopefully you’re here to stick around we do all kinds of stuff
@ThePaintPaperHustle I'm putting glitter mixed with epoxy in 2 different colors and then gonna seal it so I can power wash it. Gold and blue. Behind chrome. This is similar to many fields as I'm usually a carpenter after I was a wrench in that it's all about prep and cleaning and securing the work. The work is the easy part.
Oh man that sounds complicated lol
They look good i wish mine looked as good as yours
You can do yours buddy
those are nice
Thanks
Do u recommend doing this inside where the air goes all the way to the edge to prevent air leaks or no
Yes you can if the tire is off the rim already
Nice job timah🤣
No clue what that means but thanks for watching
"These are going on my wife's vehicle so I'm not lookin' for a good job" Lol'd
Correct. We don’t care that much about our daily drivers.
Lol can’t lie and say we care about our own vehicles like we would a customer job
Great video
Thanks Chris
This is on a budget 😳
Yes it’s is a budget repair for cheap.
Budget harbor freight tools 😂
Budget if you already own a paint shop. Lol
You can easily do this in your home garage using a $10 harbor freight gun
Damn Courtney, I’ve never found anyone else that paints like I do, and I mean exactly like I do until I found you, but it works buddy and you can not argue with the results.
Good job brother, I’m proud of ya man!!
Lol awesome man and thanks a ton
Understand it was budget, but it would have been worthwhile to r&r tires and blast wheels you got corrosion between bead and at the valve stem
Friend of mine bought this vehicle from us and even after all this time they still look the same and haven’t had any issues. Great option for fast cheap low quality job
Are those OEM GM rims or are they aftermarket that somebody put the GMC center cap I know they're called Snowflake and I know aftermarket companies sell them but I did not know that GM offered them add extra trim I got a feeling they don't but I wait for your answer
They are OEM wheels that I bought used and put the center cap in I think. It’s been awhile since I did that and this vehicle is long gone. I would have just did whatever is cheapest. Honestly I feel like they came in the wheels which were used junk off market place
Have you had to do the ones on the Camaro? Just wondering what the best color match would be?
I have not
Everyone tell me u can't paint over chome. I guess that's not true.. looks really good!
We do it all the time and a lot of people do
@@ThePaintPaperHustle I wonder how long it last.. I got some srt8 wheels are peeling
@williamlopez4934 it’s lasted a long time for me in the past. These are still perfect years later
Any professional painter can do this.....doing the same thing DIY would be impressive this is expected from professionals....looks good tho good job
What do you recommend the fix is when the peeling and pitting is on the lip of the wheel? Our tires won’t seal right and keep leaking. We did replace ours but are looking to sell the old set.
You have to remove the tires and grind the chrome plating off. I’ve had to have tire shops do that in the past. You grind the chrome off around the bead area.
This was a great video
Thank you
do you have a pic of the final result? with the paint dry and on the vehicle?
I don’t but it’s same vehicle that’s in the video where we review Mars NC tint shop if you look in my playlist under reviews.
I’m doing this same thing right now
Awesome hope yours turn out amazing
Wow👀
🦃
Do you think taking them to a sand blaster it would get that chrome flakes off
Possibly however this was a diy budget job so goal was to bury the damage for cheap instead of fixing it properly
Wow quick response thanks I got some really cheap BUT
they have a bunch of weird holes and other spots on rims that I think are going to be a PIA so I'm get em blasted
Gottcha yea maybe best bet for you
What would you charge to do a similar job for a customer? Just ballpark. Amazing job and video!!
$600
Want to see them on the vehicle
The vehicle was in some of my later videos when we bought the white Tahoe and sold this vehicle but besides that it was never in its own video. A buddy of mine has the suv now and they still are holding up great
Them clean breh.
Thanks buddy
I have chrome wheels for my Chrysler 300s in this condition that won’t hold air. No cracks. Just heavy corrosion. Do you think doing this process would work? Or refinishing in general? Let me know your thoughts
^im going to powdercoat instead though btw
Awesome
Shouldn't you wet sand paint so clear sticks better?
No. Never a reason to wet sand your base coat unless it’s to remove trash.
Why not use 3M green tape for hard to stick surfaces
I just stick to a few products and that’s it. I don’t like to have a lot of different things around and simply didn’t have it and never buy it
I want these rims hehehe on my 2002 Yukon
💎
Bad ass bro
Thanks
Dam they came out great doe
Yea they really did
How does this hold up in states that use road salt in the winter?
Will hold up the same as the paint on your vehicle being it’s the exact same material. Should be perfectly fine especially if washed regularly
@@ThePaintPaperHustle Thanks, I appreciate the answer and I think the wheels look great.
You’re very welcome
Hey what product did you use Specifically.. I wana repeat the same process
I just use my local suppliers budget stuff. You can do the same. Any brand will get you the same results. Even single stage black paint would be great for this.
I’d ask your paint supplier if he’s got any mistint paint and find a color you like and if it’s not free then it usually costs me $1 for a pint, $2 per quart and $5 and up depending upon paint code for a gallon. You can get out cheap this way and only have to pay regular price for your clear but it’s better than regular price on all of it!
Good luck
How much do you charge to do mine. nothing peeling just want the chrome color
So we can’t paint “chrome”. You can paint on top of chrome but chrome itself isn’t paint it’s dipped.
@@ThePaintPaperHustle I'm confused. You painted over top of chrome, so what's the difference of "painting chrome" vs. "painting over top of chrome"? Seems like the same thing to me, just semantics?
@tjgallo I’m not sure what exactly you’re referring to as this video is old but ima guess I was talking about how you don’t paint chrome. As in chrome isn’t paint it’s a dipping process. Chrome is metal not paint. So you can paint on top of chrome but chrome itself isn’t a paint color
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS LOOK FOR A GOOD JOB!!!!😮 When ur gone all that's gonna be left of you are your "jobs" so NO "10' jobs"!!!
These ain’t worth doing right. Not everything is.
@ThePaintPaperHustle they looked really good though! My twin is a protectionist and gets on my nerves sometimes doing everything EXACTLY right. I was just messing with ya. They weren't perfect but they really turned out nice!
Yea you know if you get to carried away then you get to the point that it’d just be better to replace them with new ones
I use a deck of cards push the corner into the rim.
Yes that also works but then you need a new deck everytime or you risk paint flaking off into a customers job and costing yourself money so we tape everything
@@ThePaintPaperHustle true Get a deca-cards for a dollar at dollar tree use them minimum of three times I’m lazy I don’t like taping
Lol in a paint shop you got to protect the customers property meaning their tires from getting over spray. Idk if I trust cards in that situation
My wheels are starting to show black spots and chrome isn’t looking good anymore. Will be doing this soon I feel like 😔 they aren’t flaking yet thankfully
Well glad you found this then and hope it helps
@@ThePaintPaperHustle are these chrome plated? mine are, just trying to figure out which compound to use without ruining anything
Yes these are chrome plated and it was flaking off
How are you keeping from wreekleing the paint with so many coats
If you let flash between coats you won’t wrinkle anything. I’m assuming you’re using a 2k product also
@@ThePaintPaperHustle I've had problems and the only thing I've figured to stop it was spray a good coat of sealer but I've had it do it to me before on my last coat of clear
Very interesting. I’ve never had it happen from to many coats. Only time it happens to me if I painting over spray paint or a cheap clear. Also if I repaint an item that had an issue to soon like same day it’s happened.
They turned out great man ,good job your mrs will be stoked
Thank you
is there lead in this chrome?
No clue to be honest
@@ThePaintPaperHustle
can you please make a video on how to know if is it chrome plated or Aluminium plated, no one did this before.
@HatoriZenzo-un9gx this is definitely chrome plated from the way it looks. Not sure how aluminum plating looks

2 hours maybe

@jimg836 you’re welcome
Great job for a budget make-over! As far as the valve stems go, what could I do to mask those off without interfering with my ability to paint around them? Thank you in advance for your advise.
Wrap them with a small piece of tape. Thank you for watching
If you can’t get a piece of tape around them and keep it stuck, take a small artist paintbrush and dip it in Vaseline and coat the valve stem in Vaseline being extra careful not to get any on the rim. You can also rub the Vaseline on the sidewall of the tire and skip the masking completely and then once your paint has cured a good 24 hours then just wash the tire and valve stems off with dish soap and warm water and soft rag. I use this method more than taping the tires off, it’s easier and works better for me. Just be sure you don’t get the Vaseline on anything you plan to paint otherwise your paint will not stick.
The Good luck Jason.
Awesome advice

Great vid though. Im just looking for ideas for some 22s i picked up..i can shoot em whatever
.flaky and diff style..
Finish look is cool..almost like a black chrome as far as video shows..but cool looking alternative to stripping and polishing..thanks for video..

Use a deck of cards instead of tape and then tape down the cards 🤙🏾
👌
If they were mine , would have just got them powder coated .
This is a budget option for people that don’t want to spend the amount that stripping the chrome and powder coating would cost
How much you charge to do this?
We charge $200 to paint wheels but we don’t do them in this bad of shape for customers
What grid did you use to sand them?
I normally just scuff down with a scuff pad. I can’t remember what I used in this video honestly

Sounds like you got a mess. It’s hard to paint only part of a wheel and leave another part chrome bc where to paint stops is a high risk to paint chipping
Yeah, nobody plays that close attention.

It's cheep GM chrome. That's why it's peeling. Break dust? If they can't handle break dust the chrome plating process was done on the cheaper side. Typical GM process. Make it for less sale it for more. I worked for GM for 23 years. I know they all do it but GM is by far the worst and have been the last 10 to 15 years.
