You should contact the paint companies and ask who painted the chrome on the caps of their paint cans cuz that seems much better than the paint inside them. Lol
Cool video. I think that a lot of these paints would have more of a shine over gloss black. I know that AK chrome requires a gloss black base. The downside to the Revell paint is that it's $35 and can plus shipping.
Thank you for that video Chris. It's helpful in more than one way, as some of us don't necessarilly look for a perfect chrome; sometimes you want a duller or aged chrome depending on the project, like a derelict or patina'd car. I was a bit bummed at first seeing this wednesday's video wasn't a model kit, but turns out I'm really grateful for that video!
Wait so what’s a good 2nd and 3rd place? Let us know your honest opinion! Because that revell paint is impossible to get for me so I’ll have to make do with the other brands. Thanks 😁👍🏻. Awesome video!
I knew the Revell chrome would win this contest, as it is a far better product than anything else on the market. But $30+ for a can is a little ridiculous. I’m sure I will bite the bullet and get some. Thanks for sharing.
Ok last comment for today Chris! I used to work as an auto body tech, and I can tell you that clear coat makes a night and day difference. For example, a pinkish red raw color coat will almost turn bright red with clear. So may I suggest that you try clearing all those spoons, and come back to us with a part 2 of that video?
seems about right, most chrome Sprays or Paints need to have a Black high gloss base coat to get the chrome coming out , a matt primer take down the effect even on gloss paints
FANTASTIC test, Chris! Love how you did everything the same, and with vs without primer. One caution to viewers: I've read MANY reports that ANY kind of clear, even Future, over the Revell Chrom SEVERELY dulls the finish. So Chris, a sweet addendum test would be for you to try a few clears & Future over some spoons sprayed with the Revell.
i got the rust-oleum bright coat metallic finish because it looked like the second best in terms of actual chrome reflection, second best for colour reflection. The duplicolor chrome one doesn't have as good reflectivity in your video. I hope my rust-oleum can is a good one.
This was a great video!! Fun and professional. I have tried many of the paints you demonstrated, but I always wondered if the proverbial "chrome in a can" actually existed. Yes, it is...Revell. I have never even heard of the brand. Now I'm off to search for it. Thank you for puting decades of curiosity to rest! ✌️
The paint manufacturers consider "chrome" to be a color. Notice they do not say "polished chrome". That is because "chrome" is just a type of "silver" color. IMO, none of them look like chrome except for Revell which comes very close.
How cool would be to be able to purchase the artwork for our shops and hobby rooms. It would be nice to give artists recognition for their box art like the old AMT kits
Love this comparison video!! you have performed a modeling and car restoration community service!! Just wish I could give you TWO thumbs up and then Two big toes up as a bonus salute.
Glad to see the stock back up ! Just ordered and your online system was smooth using Paypal ! Thank you and will give an update ! BTW Great detailed Video .

This is a great video. I have experimented with several chrome paints also. I have to agree the Revell is the best/easiest. Molotow thru an airbrush is real close. I just wish there was a way to have real chrome plating done similar to what Chrometech USA used to do. No spray chrome looks as good as real plating.
Having sprayed some model car bodies with the Revell chrome I can agree that it’s very good, didn’t realise it was hard to get, I had no trouble and I only used it as it was the first chrome spray I found, seems I found the best :) Thanks for the effort you put in, great informative video
Wow! Great video. I would never have the resources or the time to do anything near this to determine a good chrome paint, but I sure as heck am glade you do! New sub.
The biggest problem with the realistic spray can chrome and the airbrush chrome like Alclad is that they can't be touched because the oils in your skin will dull them down to regular silver in short order, they can't be buffed or polished to a higher shine or to restore the original shine - that also turns them silver, and you can't give them a black wash like on a grille because that ruins them too. Most clear coats instantly turn them silver as well, really not a good alternative to actual chromed plastic.
@@richardbeal4917 I have some of that, along with the chrome. I haven't tried the chrome yet, but I can say the Vallejo Burnt Iron metal finish works beautifully. Makes VERY nice-looking exhaust manifolds.
Thanks. To save a lot of writing, and tiny writing at that, when doing multiple item tests, Use a "1A", "1B", "2A", "2B" method and then write the number on the can so that can "1" goes with 1A and 1B, etc. No more writing the names of the paint on the spoons; just numbers. Easier and faster.
Without access to a full lab this is a very honest test/review Chris. Maybe I need to start looking at some other Chromes as I tend to only use Molotov. The Revell is a difinite winner for a BRIGHT CHROME finish. Rustoleum Bright Chrome Finish seemed to really run on the unpainted spoon
Great vid. Thanks for the info. I’ve used the Rustoleum Bright Coat for NMF on aircraft models and it works very well. I just takes several light coats.
The real test is. Will it stay reflective after being handled. I use Rustoleum brand and it looked great. Until I had to actually build the model and my fingers made the parts dull silver.
I was thinking about making a hot rod pedal cart with a chrome grill. So I watched your video. The Revell brand is hard to get here, and expensive. But I'm determined. Thinking about things, I walked into my kitchen for a snack. Then I noticed my Revell classic stainless steel toaster. It polished to a mirror finish. It's easier to buy a new toaster than a can of that stuff. But thanks for the experiment.
Glad I saw this ! I saw the Revell and went wow expensive and there’s the reason why…so I’ve ordered 6 cans to spray my motorbike fenders up as the players want a fortune lol. I will put a high gloss clear coat over the chrome spray, hope it doesn’t dull it down too much . Great vid, thanks 👍
Yeah, recently saw the Revell chrome spray 150 ml can going for $85.50 a can ((Revell of Germany 39628 Acrylic Chrome 150 ml Spray)) thank you for the video review and insight..
Good to know what works best on plastic and what doesn't. I'm currently using Rust-oleum bright coat which works good for the builds I do. As with all paints and finishes, it boils down to what effects you're looking for and what you're willing to pay for it. I just do my kits for fun so I try to stay within a price range for the paints. It also pays to shop around to see where to get the best deals.
This is one of the most helpful & instructional videos you have ever done. Exposing what is good to what isn't. I am watching live streams where the very subject is spraying chrome. I am going to refer this video like crazy. One of those paints you have buffs out shiny like crazy. I just read that on comments from Oz scale modeling's live stream today.
I wonder how these would do with a clear coat applied. When I paint (bikes), I usually do 4x colour and 3x clear. Looks like I'll have to do my own test with clear.
This video is exactly what I was looking for. Revell Chrom Spray is by far the BEST and the only look I was going for. Imagine if I went to my local box store and picked up any of the others. I would have been so disappointed. Where can you get the Revell Chrom?
OMG, got a can of Revell for US$38 plus shipping and proved he's right. Incredible silver-like, mirror-like reflectivity. But now the question is, how if it's possible, to coat it. For display-only models, it's perfect without any coating; I get it. For my chess set, the first finger touch puts it right back in Krylonville.
You should contact the paint companies and ask who painted the chrome on the caps of their paint cans cuz that seems much better than the paint inside them. Lol
" my hand hasn't moved that fast since i was thirteen " LOL!

One of the last honest reviewers left online. Amazing review
The Revell Chrom Spray is ABSOLUTELY the winner! WOW! That stuff has me sold on it! Thanks for the video.
$30 a can... I guess you get what you pay for!
@flippy66 and nowhere can you get it for 30... maybe 35 plus a ridiculous shipping cost.. and out of stock most places anyway
THANK
YOU
Chris !!!
Lot of work that is greatly appreciated!!
Fantastic video!!!! Revell is it! True, you get what you pay for! Thx
I came for the chrome paint. Stayed for this guys personality.
Thanks so much for taking the time to put this together! I respect the massive amount of work this took, and the time and money spent!
Thank you for an outstanding test of the various chromes. Much appreciated!!!
i have graduated to an airbrush, but before I would use the simple Rustoleum metallic. I got decent results. The Revell paint though is the winner.
I like the into "take your lil fingers and type it in google" 😂 gotta love this guy, no bs attitude
I'm glad you took the time to show the workmanship of excitement. Thank you!
Cool video. I think that a lot of these paints would have more of a shine over gloss black. I know that AK chrome requires a gloss black base. The downside to the Revell paint is that it's $35 and can plus shipping.

Agreed, gloss black would give it a deeper chrome look.
Thank you for that video Chris. wow what a great analysis. Props to Revell
Great video Chris. The Revell paint sure did good in this test. Maybe a video update on how durable each paint is would be popular. 👍
so revel chrome paint is best? then clearcoat?
@@AckzaTV yes.

Try $40
I decant a little in the airbrush each time. Lasts forever
You saved us all from buying a half dozen useless cans of paint, thank you!
That savings can go towards the Revell chrome spray!
Big thanks for doing this. Really love seeing how paints look out of the can as the cap color and what the label claims it to be are rarely accurate.

Clear over these chrome sprays will most likely turn them dull.
@@Electrobeam673 Correct, for my experiment at least: clear coat completely dulled it, which I expected as well.
