I can't wait to show you all how these rims look on the Lexus! I want to give a big shoutout to John and his team from Union Rim on another spectacular job done with these wheels!
I have a 2017 F150 truck. My OEM PVD wheels are peeling AGAIN. I wonder if the process that Ford is using is different from what was shown in the video. The issue that I am hearing is that the coating peels and chips when applying tires to the wheel itself and more often when removing the tire from the wheel. Ford knows about this issue and a lot of people are having that issue. It’s more common when you have larger size tires mounted. Now that being said the size of the tire shouldn’t cause that issue if the wheel was durable enough like most are. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks.
Been to Union Rims many times. John does excellent work. He is a true professional and always true to his words. In this world of hype and faking it til you make it, John is one of the rare exceptions and is a true craftsman.
I have only one word to say: AMAZING. I have been working as a powder painter for over 17 years and today I learned something from you.Good job and take care👏👏👏…Chapeau
Man those wheels look absolutely phenomenal. This is the first time I've ever watched this process and am really impressed. Also glad to hear that PVD finish has benefits other than looks.
@Cars with Sonduren I'll keep an eye out for it. Do you have any videos of your lexus with the refinished wheels? I looked on your channel and didn't see any. EDIT: Never mind I found one.
Black chrome was always my favorite color on rims until I saw Transparent Copper. Not sure why it’s called Transparent lol but that’s what it’s called. A friend of mine does Powder Coating as well and he done his Mercedes Wagon that is a hunter green looking color and put the copper wheels on it and the thing looks freaking amazing!!
I just dropped off my 20 inch wheel rims at Union Rim to be powder coated PVD Black Chrome finished. I did not know the full entire process that was involved until this video popped up on my recommended list. I can't wait to see the final results of my rims. After watching this video, I am sure I will be completely satisfied.
@9:50 You can't open that door because the machine has removed the air from inside to create a near vacuum (think outer space) within itself. It's not sucking the door shut, it's actually the weight of the atmosphere outside the machine, usually around 14.7 psi, give or take, that prevents opening the machine's door. It's a critically important law of physics to know. Thanks for sharing this video!
@LilKing420s. Normally, I would comment with "oh your that type of person that throws something sarcastic out there". Truth be told, your right...14.7 PSI and something that is "critically important law of physics to know". Another truth be told? I don't believe they teach that in our schools like they did in the old days. Shame.
I did a photoshoot for PVD black chrome in 2010 for Pacific Rims. They suppose to have a patent on it, lol. This was the hardest thing I ever shot. I finally figured out that the reflection in the wheel gives it the punch. The following ad I did for them had a woman in a bikini angled next to the wheel.
Thanks man :) John is pretty much an artist it was amazing to see everything in person. A lot of times you dont realize the work and skill required for this type of work unless you see it yourself. Glad I could share this with everyone
there used to be a company in warsaw indiana that did this process but they closed a couple of years ago. i saw one of their display wheels when i was there. really a beautiful wheel appearance upgrade that you dont often see. the wheel looks basically the same but stands out from the others in a quiet way.
hi , the best powder coating i have seen in my life !!! amazing work !! can we cover motorbike magnesium whells ? thank for your answer . laurent from France .
I have those exact wheels on my Lexus and just got two small stone chips. A wheel repair company near me said they CAN NOT be touched up. Explained the process and said there is no one near me that has the EXPENSIVE equipment that is needed to create these wheels. Having watched this video gives me a full understanding of what he was saying. I guess I will just hide them with touch up paint. 😢
I'm having my 2015 corvette wheels done this spring. Can't wait to see them on my car. What kind of warranty can I expect and what about cleaning them?
Wow, informative video and you asked all the questions needed except the most important one- price! I know they're in Canada but certainly they could give an estimate.
Sure you can. If you know what you're doing, PVD is cakewalk. I service PVD, TVD, and EVD chambers for a living. It's a fun and exciting job. Especially when things go wrong.
Wow!!!! I love the care and time that you put into the process. Thanks for sharing. I have a issue that maybe you can help me with. I own a 2017 Ford F-150 truck. I bought it new from the factory. You probably know where I’m going. So my “wheels “are delaminating. From what I understand there is an issue with the process that Ford is using to produce these wheels. I LOVE the look of the wheels but they are delaminating. I don’t use harsh chemicals or acid based products. Mostly soap and water since they are so easy to clean. Mine has the regular chrome look. Not black chrome. The rim is a 20 inch rim. The tires that I run are Toyo Open Country 35x12.5 20. I was told that when tires of that size are added to the wheel the bead seals and when the tire is removed later to break the bead the finish comes away with it causing the delaminating issue. Is there a way to possibly spray the inside of the rim to keep that from happening? I really need your help. Thank you in advance. I hear a lot of people are having this issue. 🏆
Powder coating is a non metallic finish, the part is cleaned and electrified so when the powder is sprayed it is attracted to the part. It goes on evenly and is dry (so it does not run like paint.) Then Its put in an oven and the coating melts / cures and very evenly wets and levels for a nice smooth finish that is more rugged than paint. PVD is a process where you can apply metal onto a non metallic surface (similar to plating). We used it in the defense industry for years (my experience is applying Aluminum on epoxy plastic). For PVD just put the prepped part in, the air is removed from the chamber to get the oxygen out (or else the metal will rust before it makes it to the part).. It sounds like they then add some Argon gas but for the most part it is still a vacuum in there (or the door would fly open). There is an electric arc generated which generates the metallic vapor and it is attracted to the part very evenly and it can go on very thin depending on what sacrificial metal the arc is generated on.. In this video if I understood correctly that sacrificial metal is that center rod which was chromium. When they took it out it looked just like regular chrome to me. That top tinted clear coat is where the magic happened. . . . Now I wonder what would happen if you just put that final tint over normal chrome? PVD looks to be a way cleaner process than chrome plating IMHO.
My local rim shop told me 2k to do my set of rims for my 09 Audi A5 in black chrome. Never knew there was that much in the process. Question??? Do the heat affects the density of the rims ???
Is it possible to black chrome motorcycle engines? That would be stunning. I don't know how the chrome would react with engine heat and vibrations, however.
Thanks he did such a great job absolutely love how I turned out and the attention to detail to make sure these rims turned out perfect was incredible to see!
I have some questions. I’m wanting to learn how to do this. I want to add this to my resume. I’ve see so many videos and all of them are diff. I’m just working out of home right now until GOD blesses me with a small shop.. but I’m confused I see your stuff of course is top of the line.. but for me especially if I’m doing rims do I treat everything like I’m really gonna paint. Prep, sand, base coat, sand, paint etc . Or no. I’ve seen some so called racers want there rim done like this it has no color to it other then the basic steel look.. then othered that have colored rims or chrome rims.. I just need basic fundamentals and/or direction to start my journey, and help or advice I’d greatly appreciate it and would not be forgotten.. I’m an artist and to me this it by all means ART ‘..
With a Boar's hair brush something that won't scratch the finish and just use a simple wheel cleaner nothing acidic. Definitely would want to ceramic coat the wheels if you can as well to make it even easier to clean with just a pressure washer.
