    Wow this actually explains why I go so crazy when things don’t go my way or I’m in a less than ideal situation. It’s because I categorized the “not perfect” as bad. And all it does is make me hate my life whenever things aren’t perfect

    • @Lobsterwithinternet
      @Lobsterwithinternet 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pretty much.
      You have to understand your own imperfections and the imperfections of the world around you to know how to feel.
      You can’t live an honest life if you believe everything is good or everything is bad.

    This video rightly explains that it is impossible to think positively all the time. Trying to think positive all the time is like using a white pen on white paper. It does not deliver any kind of picture you can see. It's actually the dark lines that create the picture.

    There have been moments in my life where I’ve been positive and couldn’t stand to be around negative people.
    There were other moments in my life where I was very negative and couldn’t bare to be around positive people. The problem with our society is we encourage one thing and demonize the other.
    There is a lot that can be gained and learned from negativity.

    • @jasongates-
      @jasongates- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. People demonize the negative thinker. It could be as simple as the person suffering from clinical depression or post partum depression, and people demonize him / her as just being negative. And, they constantly demonize the person, to the point where they tell the person, "Don't talk to me." The problem is still there. Clinical or post partum depression. And, maybe a traumatic experience in their past led to the depression, like being abused as a child. But, nope. He's just negative, people respond. That type of treatment creates negative thinking people. Like, if you always tell the person he's negative, he will go into a job interview thinking, "I'm negative," which will guarantee the person not getting hired. Whereas, if he was left alone or given interview tips instead, maybe he would have gotten the job. People demonizing each other makes matters worse. But, I agree that people like to demonize each other. That demonizing spirit is what's actually negative, not the person being told that he's negative. I can't stand being around people who insist on demonizing others. They could be the most positive person in town. If they only demonize, that's the person I'm staying away from.

    I've noticed people who self-identify as "positive thinkers" are judgmental. Or maybe I'm judgmental for calling them judgmental...whatever. XD

      They have to be. They are always guarding against what is not positive. The price they pay by this is that they lose compassion and understanding.

    • @jasongates-
      @jasongates- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ladyhawk's Lair, I agree. Self-identified "positive thinkers" are judgmental. And, they WOULD take your comment as judgmental. That's their go to move. To turn it on to you, and they never look in the mirror. They think everyone but themselves need to look in the mirror. Then when you tell them that, they snap on you and they never want to see you again. That's their go to response.
      But, you're not judgmental for calling them judgmental. You're just making a statement, and pointing out the truth. It's not wrong to call a judgmental person "judgmental."
      I also agree with LA. That, those "self-identified positive thinkers who are judgmental" "lose compassion and understanding."

And if it changes, you will adapt with the changes and be find the way to be happy again wiaht the way it is in its new ways. This video is not about positve thinking, its about fear and resilience.

    If we don't strive towards everything i.e. lose attachment to dreaming or wanting to obtain situations or status (relationships, promotions) how do we ever move forward? how can you be motivated? What motivates you? You have written books, so that required some motivation - how did you get it done? I understand the theory that we don't know the outcome - so what did you tell yourself each morning to start writing? I guess a lot of our motivation comes from anxious thoughts and a feeling of lack - but what is the alternative?

    • @Mr.Honest247
      @Mr.Honest247 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Marisol Gonzalez Action is what gets it done. You don't need motivation. Motivation is bullshit. Stop depending on it. Because it's not always there and you have to keep doing all these "tactics" to keep it alive.. If you just do it, and accept that you're not in the mood anyway simultaneously, if you do the task successfully even then, then you have more power and control over yourself and your life. You won't need motivation anymore because simple action is all you need.

    Hey Noah. I have a suggestion for a video: Explaining how thoughts, feelings & actions all have an impact on each other. Like it's a continuous circle. For example:
    If you feel sad, you decide to go for a walk hoping that it will make you feel better. It makes you feel better and then you think better. They're all linked and one has an effect on the other.
    Action>Feeling>Thought🔄
    This method has helped me with many situations and I was hoping you could share it with others. :)

    Hi Noah,
    I appreciate very much you're videos.
    The comparative bad/evil, good/wrong, happy/upseat are strong connected each other.
    And a problem pops up in my head: If we dont judge bad/evil, good/wrong, happy/upset, What is propose in our life ? Why we living for?
    I appreciate very much you're answer.
    Regards,
    Adrian

      adrian antohi If you feel like playing a sport, or dancing, or singing in a given moment, do you do it because it is good? No, you do it because that is what you feel pulled to do. We are living to experience the peace and joy of following our intuition. As long as you believe in bad and good, there will be a lot of suffering.

  • @scorpzero2245

    That's true. Every time I think a negative thought I struggle going back and forth between positive and negative. I'd like to be happy but sometimes I don't know how to because I don't think my life is so satisfying. I've always aimed to be positive but my negative thoughts take over and I become angry. Its difficult to stay positive and sometimes it really hurts. I just don't know how to stay happy anymore. I wish I did, but I don't.

      I think that's perfectly fine. I mean, beauty by itself is neither good or bad. The way I like to think about this is as if I had chocolate and a kiwi. And I love my chocolate. But because I enjoy the taste of chocolate, I won't say that kiwi is gross... I like kiwi. Kiwis are kewl. :)

  • @Soleil.m
    @Soleil.m 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    It was only an 11 minute video but it feels like there's a lot to take in. This is something that my mind can't wrap around, it seems. Kind of like mathematics, it's really messing with my brain. From reading a lot of comments I think I understand better what you are trying to say; *remain neutral to things and situations that happen *, *When something deeply troubles you, don't just think positively and hope you get through it, but instead face the issue head-on* and *Do things that you want to do, not because you think they are 'good', but because you feel and know in your heart that you want to*?
    I completely agree that unhappiness isn't created by things that happen to you, but it's how you let your mind tell you that you aren't good enough.... That makes sense to me. I also think that there is really no "good and bad", I understand that 'good and bad' is just a man-made concept.
    But hearing you in this video, does this mean I should *not* think "My day today was pretty bad, but it could've been worse!"? Not having an opinion on things is an outrageous thought my 17 year old brain can't fathom.
    Also, should we not be curious, in your opinion? Should we not bother asking questions to others, simply because that isn't what will make us happy?
    I can be very judgmental of other people, but I understand that those are just my opinions of them. I *feel* like I'm right, but I know I'm not because there is no such thing as right or wrong.
    Excuse me, my mind is all over the place right now....

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +kohakuu0 No thought is bad. There is no thought that you shouldn't have. The purpose of this video is really just to make it clear that pursuing positive thinking as a means to pursue happiness is ineffective. If you have a thought that says "My day today was pretty bad, but it could've been worse!" then you can question the validity of that statement or you can let it pass. My recommendation is to start questioning the validity of majorly "negative" ones first, and take it from there.

    • @Soleil.m

      I see. Your advices are very much nothing that I've ever heard before. But I find that the things you say do make sense, so it's scary to know how many people don't get informed about this. People that teach their kids for example, that positive thinking will get them through all obstacles. Would be easier if solving these problems immediately just came naturally to every human...
      Anyhow, I appreciate that you took the time to respond.

    Cause & Effect.
    If you live in the present and free your mind of worries, you will stop suffering.
    One chooses to suffer but one can also choose to not suffer any longer.

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jessica Rodriguez Hi Jessica, we don't actually choose to suffer, and we can't choose not to. We were taught to suffer. And we don't have a choice whether we are exposed to someone who offers a different way. If we are exposed to that sort of person, then we don't have a choice whether we are interested/open to it or not. If we are open and interested in it, we don't determine whether we are able to discover what that person is speaking about. For example, if 100 people want to be free of their worries, and they all engage in the exact same exercise for the exact same amount of time, they will not all get the same results. If we had control, we would just push a button in our minds and stop suffering.

    I recently discovered your videos and am truly happy I did. Amazing content. I've heard about this theory many times now, how good and bad are simply labels created by us humans. That there is no such thing as bad and good. However I am having quite a hard time understanding this notion fully and hope you can answer me ! If nothing is good or bad , then how should we live ? Why should we aim to find inner peace and balance ? If living in chaos and sadness isn't bad? Shouldn't we just accept our sadness and pain and not label it as bad instead of trying to find peace ? Do we teach our children that they can behave any way they want since nothing is bad? If we are in an abusive situation, either at work or at home, should we just accept it as is and not strive to improve our life? Can we hurt others ? It's not bad right ? I've been asking myself these questions often and I hope you can enlighten me a little :)

    HUGE. Gratitude always makes me uncomfortable for this reason. The state of ALLOWING all things and being curious about them is a much higher state than gratitude. There's a lot of assumption in believing something is "good." I think duality is a mechanism that humanity has used to expand its consciousness and perhaps it's ready to, well, expand beyond it. The caveat, we believe peace is "good" and we're trying to "achieve" it by eradicating the concept of good vs. bad. Perhaps this video game is rigged? Good work. Good conversations. xo.

    Yeah agree I had a busted phone and all i thought about was the lack of good things then i realised i could get it looked at it was a safety feature and it's now working. Over focus on that thinking led to me not taking the information at face value relationships and situations weren't working. Now I dont need a new phone. Thank God I cant afford one. I just accepted and then got it fixed. I had the wrong medical care in 2019 in a way I made my own worst year why I didnt advocate or do my homework indeed it can be to ones detriment. I had to look at the facts.

    Be a realistic thinker. Optimism is like alcohol for the soul...might get you through tough times but sooner or later it wears off making you feel worse. Pessimism doesn't just do you any favours, as it can blind you from seeing any potential good that might come out of the bad. Realism is a rather fine balancing act, but once maintained will let you clearly identify he good and bad.

    I see where you are coming from, but you can be positive even when you lose what you are being positive about. If you say "I have a great girlfriend" and you break up. Then you can think "their is someone else out their who can be an even greater girlfriend". Or if you like your car but then it breaks. You can think positively and think "cool now I get to get a new car which will be just as good or better."

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AcerbusGaming You can absolutely think/believe those things about the future. But, do you know they are true? As long as you don't know that you will get the "good" outcome, there will be doubt/anxiety about whether you will get the good outcome or a bad one. And as long as you think that getting new car or great girl would be good, then you will feel as though this moment isn't as good because you don't have it yet, and that will cause you to feel lacking/insufficient/lonely.

    • @Maarten8867
      @Maarten8867 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AcerbusGaming That would be better than being completely depressed, but you will still be feeling worse than you did when you stil had your girlfriend or your car. Otherwise why would you need to replace them? I think a better way to think would be to look at the benefits of losing your girlfiend and car once you lost them. And looking at the bad side of the car and girl so you can be happy no matter what happens. Because it's not really good or bad to have a girlfriend or a car, but the way we look at it makes us feel good or bad about it.

    Another thing about postive thinking, you think negative and blame yourself. It hard to keep up the facade. To me is what is, is. If you're ugly. You're ugly. If you're shy you're shy. No amount of postive thinking is going to change that period. No "the secret" or anything else is going to change that. What is is.

    Makes sense - but lots of these judgements, beliefs about what is good or bad, etc. are entirely subconscious. Is the only way of finding peace is by achieving everything that is good by struggling so hard, only to realize it doesn’t give you peace?

    I'm so confused. For the New Year I told myself that I would think positive for 2017 and try to be more optimistic. The year before that, I tried to think as a "realist" and people kept calling me cynical. So I decided to change all that by waking up in the morning, thinking that it'll be a beautiful day, by stop judging myself and call me beautiful, and by trying to stop worrying about the past and focus on the present.But I've noticed that while I've been doing this, I've had these bad thoughts of whenever I question the things that I do, I feel like I'm going back to the ways I used to think. I feel like I'm being cynical or something. Now, I'm hearing to stop thinking positive and to be realistic again. So I just went in full circle and I'm completely lost and confused. Do I go back to thinking objectively then? Do I stop all this positive thoughts that I'm trying to maintain to get happiness? Please someone explain. This is just completely stressing me out.

      personally, I think it might me better to depend on yourself to figure out how to think rather than relying on someone else. It may not be what you want to hear but there isn't one way to think in my experience, nobody has all the answers and what some people say might not work for you.

    I understand your point but doesn't seeing everything so objective create a monochromatic life? You have to feel the bad to feel the good, you need contrast. The more things hurt that just makes it all that much more possible to feel amazing.

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Nicki Elliott I understand why you would believe that, but you absolutely don't need to experience fear, anger, and sadness in order to experience joy, laughter, freedom, playfulness, and love. In any moment that you are experiencing suffering, that is a moment that you are not getting to experience true happiness. In addition, in any moment that you are experiencing the pleasure from a positive thought, you are not experiencing true happiness. If objective life was neutral, it wouldn't be much fun, but luckily life is inherently joyous. Just ask a baby. :)

    • @NoahElkrief

  • @addy1gautam

    Hi Noah,
    What you are saying is right - there are no absolutes in life and everything is relative. However, the drive to do anything in life has to come out of the feeling that we get while doing that thing - and that feeling is not relative - it is abstract but can be categorized as absolute good or bad.
    So the point I'm humbly trying to convey here is that - maybe we need to change the definition of positive thinking - maybe it means to be in control of our thoughts to the extent that we may actually make ourselves feel good/relaxed/calm/composed/confident in every situation. And this might not be as simple as judging a thing as good or bad.
    So positive thinking might help - as long as it is done in the right way.
    Btw, thanks for the insightful video.
    Warm Regards.
    Aditya

    • @NoahElkrief
      @NoahElkrief  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      addy1gautam Hi Aditya, as long as we are unhappy, all of our decision about what to do with our time comes from asking the question "What will make me happy?" This is true whether we are choosing what to eat, watch, listen to, what job to take, and everything else. But, when we are at peace, or when we are able to listen to our intuition, our drive to do things is no longer done with the intention of making ourselves happy. It is simply, "What do I feel pulled to do right now?"

    Noah, would you please make a video talking about how we can engage in social conversation without getting caught up in judgments of good and bad? It seems like all common verbal interactions are founded on a culture-wide belief in good and bad. It colors everything. "How are you?" "Are you having a good day?" "Lovely weather, isn't it?" All these invite a judgment of good or bad from the other person, and they set the tone for conversation to follow. How can I talk with people outside the paradigm of good and bad?

How can I approach weghtloss from a place of happiness? eg: Im already happy in myself, I feel good emotionally, but id like to start getting fit and healthy to have more energy and vitality. Hi Noah. Thanks for your videos. I really enjoy them and wish I could share your outlook on life. They do challenge my mind tremendously though. It's just hard to imagine not having any thoughts, or disbelieving those that you have. The only difference between a person and a goldfish would then be physical. And humans would be left mentally and emotionally the equivalent of a goldfish. Just being. Without any good or bad experiences or valid thoughts. It is so difficult for me wrapping my mind around the fact that this state would not bother one. Do you think your state of mind is possible for everyone to understand and experience and it just requires some work?

    • @raymondsextondublin
      @raymondsextondublin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      kayley smith I think if you can get to the state where your thoughts don't hurt you - that's a good place to be. A thought is a sub-microscopic chemical reaction in a person's brain. Yet we believe it is a real thing and react to it as such. When you can think freely without anxiety, sadness, anger etc, then you notice yourself enjoying life more. It's challenging and rewarding I find. I think many of us grow up with the message that suffering is good or necessary. It can be difficult to accept that it's not so.

      kayley smith Hi Kayley, when we believe thoughts, we are in a prison. We can't dance how we want, dress how we want, sing when we want, date who we want, take jobs we want, pursue what we want... and the list goes on and on. When we don't believe our thoughts, we are free to be happy wherever we are, do whatever we want, and live with joy and creativity. It is as though the normal way of living is a goldfish or robot, and then we finally become free and alive.

      @NoahElkrief  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jimmy Chames You don't need ideas of "bad" and "good" to refrain from injuring yourself or standing in front of a car. I suspect that animals don't need to think in order jump out of the way of a car as well. But I would encourage you to test it for yourself (with something less dangerous) to see if you need to have a thought that says "that would be bad" in order to avoid getting injured.
