Noah Elkrief Hey Noah, you're videos are really great! I just love them. I'm thinking of setting up a consult with you one of these days to absorb some more of your wisdom. I am wondering if you have a specific video, or will be making a video, on this concept that there is no such thing as "bad" or "good". I do understand the concept of disproving thoughts and recognizing that we don't know outcomes in life (because of uncertainty); however, I get a bit lost when you start to describe the "i don't know scenarios". In some of your videos, you might say something like this: "I don't know if taking me the dream job will make me happy...if I don't take it, I might find the love of my life or meet my best friend instead". But isn't that still saying that we should "let go" or "be with what is" in order to discover something else might be "good"?

    • @bendietrees
      @bendietrees 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Justin, obviously I'm not Noah but I might be able to help clarify? He is using examples of what you might perceive as "good" or "bad" outcomes to help us wrap our heads around the concept of no good or bad. Like the first step, if you will. Ultimately experiences are simply experiences and we're the ones assigning "good" or "bad" labels to them. When he says you get fired from your job which might lead to you finding the girl of your dreams, well what if that later leads to divorce? I think that ultimately the seed of Noah's videos is about how things just "are" and it just takes a little building up to get to that concept. Without good, there is no bad. Without bad, there is no good, therefore they are the same thing and cancel each other out. He also mentions it's ok to experience things as good or bad, it's only when you want to not feel suffering because of it that you can question your thoughts and stop seeing things as a dichotomy.

+Justin Pritchard I agree, I'm still confused with "bad" and "good" concepts. I think that what he actually means is that no goal can ever lead to happiness, so we should stop believing thoughts like: "it would be best if I got X," since neither "X" nor "not X" will lead to happiness. Thus, we should not seek happiness through goals, but through being present.
The way he phrases it, it seems like he's saying that there might be a goal or complex series of events that could lead to happiness (for example: lose my job -> become a hobo -> fall in love with hobo princess -> happiness), but that we shouldn't trust our minds to find it. If that's what he's saying, then that would be an anxiety provoking reality since we can only hope to find happiness through chance.

***** I go through the same thing. There is time in my life when I am physically fit and anxiety doesn't bother me at all but when sometimes when i get depress, i start to smoke, eat unhealthy and stay at home that triggers anxiety and in worst case scenarios even panic attacts that can turn in to nightmares. I always try to keep a good balance and control in my life and keep myself busy in studying and work to avoid those nast anxiety attacks. I am sure that u too will be able to kick ur anxiety by finding ur special way

I just want to say to all the people who have social anxiety, I give you a huge hug. Because it's horrible to always hear the 'it's all in your head' or 'just stop being shy' or 'just go out more'.
It truly is like a prison, but I promise you're not alone, you're not 'pathetic' and it's not your fault to be feeling this way.
If you try your best, you'll get better, slowly but surely. /hugs/ ♥

+jessie rios If I stick around too long, yeah. I become overstimulated trying to predict everyones behavior in my peripheral vision to ensure my well being. Basically everyone is a threat to me and I don't know why. The overprocessing stresses me out, and I end up quietly gathering my things, and leaving (Inside, I can't get away fast enough.) At this point, I am happiest in complete solitude. No stress, and the only stupidity I have to deal with is my own.

It's 3am-- I was on the verge of an anxiety attack because I am literally about to get up to go to go on a trip that is supposed to be fun - I can't help but keep thinking of bad scenarios. Somehow watching you was really soothing. It's weird how having someone basically point out your thoughts makes it feel like it's not you that has to deal with a problem solely. A lot of people feel the same way. The solidarity helps somehow. Thank you so much for this video!

Patricia, How are you? To feel better reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. When taking a walk, at office, in school, when reading, before sleep etc observe your breath sensations. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Reduce negative media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Same, about to go on a trip and can’t stop my fears. People say you can’t control anything around you except your reaction, is this suppose to give me peace? It increases my anxiety even more to know that we can’t control anything around us.
My list of fears is so long: fear of war, car accidents, not seeing my loved ones again, fear of war, fear of losing my temper.

Dang Noah this is right on point, I already knew that circumstances do not create peace and happiness mentally yet internally I didn't seem to really believe it, thoughts about the circumstances of the future trouble me, which brings me to your last point about how do we truly know what circumstance would be best for us? I almost always go to the negative thoughts as a preset, I always thought I was being "realistic" yet it's not realistic at all it's quite negatively biased, but when I contemplate if there could be positive outcomes from certain circumstances I start thinking of all kinds of hopeful things and possibilities. Thanks for the video! I am going to start watching my negative side closely from now on and challenge it.

For smiles, I believe the real release from anxiety here is simply listening to Noah’s voice which is very calming in itself :). On a serious note, though, I really appreciate what you do Noah. I know you have helped so many people. I don’t consider myself an anxious person, but in the last year I’ve lost my mom, my grandmother, major ups and downs with family and friend relationships and this has affected my way of thinking and rethinking of myself. Thank you so much for sharing this love of self and understanding with us all.

  • @tonilivingston8054
    @tonilivingston8054 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Wow!!! This was exactly what I was thinking... I 100% agree. I get..it
For example I quit my job because of my anxiety. I had so called a good job that paid well but I was miserable. I wasn't happy with myself. I totally shut down and felt worthless. Now a year later unemployed no one understands that the job was not the measurement of my happiness.
In fact nothing could motivate me to want to work until I started to feel more happy and hopeful internally. Hardly no one I talk to understands this concept that you are talking about.
Why is this? It's incredibly hard for people to understand this and meanwhile they just look at me crazy or like a loser...
I think maybe one reason why people are not quick to believe this concept of true happiness is that they are hanging on to concept and they fear letting it go... I'm guilty of it too I just have not gotten to that stage to fully let go....I have the awareness though.

I've watched each of your videos countless amount of times, and I'm having a realization now that I've never had in times prior.
I've noticed there are background noises: the chirping birds and the sound of nature. In turn, I realize that the lens in which i view the world is becoming less and less clogged with distracting thoughts. The lens is much clearer now than when i first started viewing your videos. I NEVER would have been in the present moment enough to notice the simple bird noises in the back; I would have been thinking about something else and every now and then my attention would come back to your voice.
    Thank you so much, Noah.

Can you make a video on death anxiety and the anxiety related to losing loved ones? Or can you link a writing or an article based on this, I've been suffering from such anxiety lately and the worst part is that it is coming in the way of me doing every work, also in the form of existential crisis, whenever I start doing something, thoughts like "why am I doing this? What'll this do to me, I'm going to die anyway" start hovering over my mind and it makes me really upset. Thank you for this video though, your videos have helped me a lot!

    • @jennyjunipurr

Yes, this is my problem. I live in terrible fear of something happening to my children, my spouse, or myself. All I want is all four of us to live to a ripe old age. The odds that any of us dying would lead to an ultimately better outcome than all of us living are so small that it simply is not compelling enough to reduce my anxiety. My children need me. There may be another mother for them out there that would be somehow even better, but 1) I'd be dead and 2) I am a really good mother and my children have been raised carefully by me in a unique way.
I need my children. Yes, if they died, I might...say...adopt a child that I have an even more wonderful relationship with...but, again, the odds of this are infinitesimal. My children are my children and my whole world.
The least anxiety is about my spouse, but, again, the chances I could find someone better for me are infinitesimal; we are an excellent match, very much in love, and have been together for over 20 years.
How am I supposed to live with this fear? It eats me alive sometimes.

Just know that when we die.....all the stress and bullshit in life is over.....Ive lost a few close people in the past 10 years.....and thats what helped a ton..... To know that they were finally free of the invisible shackles put on us.....that they were free.....and instead of thinking "whats the point if we are gonna die anyways"......think of how you can make someones day brighter.....try to help atleast one person everyday..... It will keep your mind busy and give you a rewarding feeling....maybe volunteer at a non profit to help people in need.....hope it gets better....and always remember there are other people feeling and thinking the same way you are..... They just dont want to admit it cause they dont want to be judged.....

This addresses the psychological root. At the start of the video, my whole body was so tense all my muscles started to burn and atrophy, my heart was pounding, I couldn't breathe and my head was full of air. By the end of the video I was breathing calmly and completely relaxed, my headache went away and the tightness disappeared instantly. Amazing

My muscles are weak and my body shakes constantly, and I always think I can sleep it off, but when I wake up in the mornings it’s still there. I love this man’s videos they always seem to calm me and guide me when I feel like life has gotten too overwhelming. I’ve had anxiety for years now and it causes some pretty nasty symptoms, in turn these symptoms give me more anxiety and the cycle just continues and it feels like the more panic attacks I get the worse and worse the anxiety feels. My mind starts racing, the back of my throat feels like it’s caught on fire and it’s a super uncomfortable experience. I’ve gone to therapists throughout the year that have helped me coop but ever so often I go through a rut in life that just opens back up the box of monsters and it feels awful but I always go back to Noah’s videos to help ground myself especially when I have no one to talk to or life gets too busy to start visiting a therapist. I know that very soon the anxiety will be past me and I’ll once again be enjoying my life I just want everyone to know that you’re not alone and there’s a lot of people going through this with you. You’ll get passed this just like every single person has and even if you find yourself anxious again it’ll become easier and easier to control until you’ll never run into it unnecessarily again. Happy holidays everyone.

For one, I've find your voice to be very calming, which really helps me be able to hone in and listen to what you're trying to tell me. I started a TH-cam channel a couple of months ago, so I figured I would do a little bit of research in trying to help me with my anxiety, which I have suffered from pretty much all of my life. I really love everything you had to say in this video, and will try to continue to practice what you teach. I've realized that I try to get positive affirmation a lot in my life because I have such a negative image of myself, and letting that go will be a challenge, but if I practice not having an expectation, maybe one day I'll be free from the need to be reassured and the fear of what people might think of me.
Thank you so much for this.

Like 6 months ago I was really skinny then I started going t the gym and I started to like my body and I thought I was looking stronger so I told one of my best friends and I sent a picture of me flexing because I was proud of it. He saved the picture and he keeps deleting it and getting it back. He is posting the photo online and sending it around and everyyime he deletes it off of his phone he gets it back to embarrass me. He is no longer my friend because of this. I have trouble falling asleep at night because of the pain in my chest and stomach and the anxiety that he will send it around and it's going to get out there. (I used to have really bad anxiety when I was skinny but going to the gym and going to the therapist made me get over it but lately it's been coming back) what should I do to get over this anxiety, he says he deleted the photo but he has said this 4 times before so I don't believe him

I feel like sometimes my anxiety helps me to feel more alive. That when I overcome a anxious moment I feel a rush of emotional well-being, that I am being what I should be in that moment. On the whole though anxiety is a nightmare, repetitive circumstances of unfocused fear. Fear of hurting people or animals is what triggers me the worst; or fear of enjoying the suffering of others. This is a great video, thanks Noah.

i think i have anxiety, i struggle walking outside by others, i start shaking and feel extreme uncomfortability, from anyone elderly or youngsters, i feel anxiety just by getting up when someone is looking at me, i know theres a non fixable problem with my body, and everyone looks weird to it, or atleast thats how it seems to me, i think others have it but it dosent effect them, i seem different :( i dont go outside much as theres people there, so am enxuos about them seeing me in this world, i feel i shud be invisible, is something wrong with me? :( idk...
