This video is about how to fall asleep fast. If you have been having a hard time falling asleep, it might be because of physical issues. But, for most people, they can't fall asleep fast because of their thoughts. The thoughts that prevent you from falling asleep fast fall into 2 major categories. 1) Thoughts about life 2) Thoughts about falling asleep. The answer to the question of how to fall asleep fast is by addressing these thoughts. For thoughts about life, write down the thoughts that keep playing in your mind over and over again and then question their validity. You can use my web app or ebook. For thoughts about falling asleep fast, you need to discover that not getting sleep might be better for your success or your happiness. As long as you think that not falling asleep would be bad for your life, you will fear it. If you fear it, you will think about how to fall asleep. Those thoughts will prevent you from falling asleep fast.
Hope this video about how to fall asleep fast helps you.

My problem is I can't sleep at those important hours because I'm too anxious about not being able to fall asleep during them. What should I do about it?

marisa liu watch your thoughts, the emotions created by then and leave them untouched. Do not try to fight with your thoughts. Let them dissolve by simply watching them IF YOU WANT. While you are in bed the most powerful advice I ve found is to do nothing.

How do you know those hours are important ? If you believe those hours are important, you will fear to not fall asleep during those hours. The truth is, no hours are more or less important than others. Address your thoughts. In the story of your life, how do you know what hours is going to bring you better things or worst things ? How do you know ? Maybe by staying awake at those hours, you will have an idea that is going to benefit you in the long run. The idea with falling asleep is to not engage with anything in your head. Do not create a fight in your head with your thoughts. Just let them be. Do not try to stop your negative thoughts as well. Accept negative thoughts. Everything is temporary. Your negative thoughts will pass. In the long run, how do you know that negative thoughts will have a negative effect on your life ? Nobody knows. We like to think we know what is best in our life because we like to hang on control. Control is an illusion. Life is a mystery and nobody knows how life is going to unfold next no matter how much control you think you have. Maybe you could listen carefully to your body. To love your body, you have to carefully understand your body. I like to have camomille tea with honey and I like to read to learn new things before falling asleep. I guess it's acting like a distraction before I try to fall asleep but, I don't know if those things are good for you.

Very strange situation happened to me. I could not sleep last night, every time I was about to fall asleep I would get panic attack and wake up completely. It was terrible. Than I just let it be and thought maybe it’s for a reason and at that time I did finally fall asleep. This morning my relative told me of a tragedy that happened to my family member back in my home country. It happened during the time I could not sleep. Me not sleeping was my intuition talking and there was a reason behind my lack of sleep. Sometimes the lack of sleep can be for a reason - as is being mentioned in the video. Beautiful Video!

I love the point that you hit on: we don't know what is best in our lives. It's easy to oversimplify things, but the reality is that our lives are complex, and even actions which we assume are unhelpful or unproductive, need to be examined. Thanks for all of your time and effort.

It was an interesting analogy that we can't sleep because our mind is "busy" similarly to not being able to sleep when our body is busy or active. I think it would be helpful to know ways to help the mind relax. I started listening to these videos on my iphone while trying to get to sleep. As Noah says in other videos- when we are distracted we aren't focusing on worry some thoughts. Apparently then our mind relaxes, sleep follows.
The next part of this video suggests that not getting enough sleep may not be problematic. I think both research and experience refutes this. When I'm rested it increases my energy, resilience and emotional strength to handle situations.

Noah, the fear that I have is not getting enough sleep then the effects on my face and eye and body is tremendous. My eyebags will be too visible, my body is feeling numb and I get tired easily doing any sport or activity, so when I worry about not getting enough sleep, that's when the vicious cycle starts, because then I lose sleep, then the effects will be realized, the fears that I have starts to happen, then I wake up with big eyebags, I will be so tired, and so on and so forth. It is really a vicious cycle - fearing not sleeping because of bad effects, then I worry, then everything that I fear happens!
You nailed it at around 6:30, that's the vicious cycle, you worry, then when your mind wants to sleep, the brain still wants to think about how to sleep!

  • @dnlamd
    @dnlamd 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I can’t sleep at night because i keep thinking that i HAVE to sleep right now and then my mind just thinks of other things and gets distracted. My mind would then remind myself again that i have to sleep in the middle of those thoughts. Then the same thing would keep happening until I’m not sleepy anymore. The next thing i know, it’s 3 or 4 in the morning. Then i just put on relaxing music that rarely works on me. Most of the time, it really doesn’t.

thank you Noah, it is amazing how my mind can be so one tracked! your insight to thinking has really helped me. i think it will take a lot of practice for me to remember to question, etc...what has really helped me, is when i get worried about work, now when i ask myself do i really know if it would be better to stay here, or is there another outcome that would be better? and when i get to the "i don't know" part of my thoughts (even apart from work) it puts me at ease for awhile. or practicing not to look outside of myself for happiness. you are helping one of the biggest black and white thinkers here :)

For about a year I was unable to relax for even a second. Not even sleep was an escape. So many negative anxious thoughts consumed me. I had forgotten what it feels like to be calm. I tried several therapists to no avail. But after implementing your thought process, I'm in control of my thoughts. I'm able to say "this thought doesn't matter" or "isn't true", shut it out and go on with my life. I no longer dwell on things. It's a great way to live.

Noah what do you do if the thoughts that are keeping you awake at night have to do with fear of sleep? In particular, worrying about things like sleep paralysis?

My thoughts on the surface at night would appear to be schizophrenic in nature. I often have very surreal, weird, incoherent, and random thoughts that don't amount to anything other than what they appear to be. However, through the rubble of disjointed thoughts, I tend to find a
lot of rational and reality based ones as well. These thoughts used to be, and sometimes still now, borderline hallucinogenic in the sense that I could almost hear them, if not hear them at all. This used to really bother me, not to mention the visual phenomena I experienced too. I questioned whether or not if there was something wrong with me and luckily, there wasn't. No schizophrenia or a degree in psychosis, it's just that I have a brain which does weird stuff. I've learned to except it over all, I often find myself amused by the absurdity that surrounds my human ego, my brain. Recently though, I've been getting a flock of
songs that pervades the silence in my shell. This video is helping me cope with the noise right now, regardless if I get any sleep. I'm watching them like birds at the park but minues the bread. Bread isn't good for them so I just watch.

Why’s that I think how’s having voices in schizophrenic people. I always thought on how’s having one and that scares me because I’m thinkin I might get this.

I get the idea. I believe it comes from eastern philosophies. I've experimented with it many times myself and sometimes it worked and other times it didn't. It is true that we never truly know what the outcome is going to be, and it is true that we can make a conscious choice to use the uncertainty to our advanatge and choose to believe that good things will come. With that being said this idea contradicts the scientific approach. Scientifically speaking there are patterns to behaviors and consequences, and there are ways to reasonably predict the future based on our past experiences (which is a crucial survival mechanism). There is also scientific evidence supporting many of the fears we have (i.e. not getting enough sleep). I find it to be a great challenge to balance these two seemingly opposing approaches.

@Noah Elkrief Hi, Noah. What if the thoughts are along the lines of "if I don't sleep I'm going to get sick"? Or "maybe I'll get dementia because doctors say insomnia is linked to Alzheimer's," or thoughts like that? How do you challenge those thoughts when you believe they are based on objective data and facts?
