X5 really surprised me. Did not expect that outcome one bit.
The E series is based on the L322 Range Rover platform, so surprisingly good.
Not really a surprise either. It should be good.
Glad it did well. They do have a true transfer case and an active traction control system. Good combo for this test it looks like. E70's have a similar system I believe but a bit more other features and clearly better looks.
Though the Facelift went to the BMW xDrive which is worse than the pre LCI.
This is xdrive version after 2004

@@jamiemagdeleyns9152 if you do the same mods to a land rover it will again dumpster it off road. I've done a bit of reading and the old tdi engines are bulletproof. As for the old rover v8, the main reason behind blown head gaskets is overheating, which means that a thermostat opening at lower temperature and a gauge that tells you exactly what temp you have will mean you probably won't have that issue until you do around 100k miles. I've been looking at old discovery models in particular and i rarely find ones with under 200k miles. My discovery is also about to reach that point, and it was sat rotting in a field for 10 years.

The XC90 really disappointed me considering it is so expensive.
Tuareg and X5 do have Torsen, so basically best AWD ever (Audi quattro)

That 4.8is X5 is BADASS! On 20” wide street tires no less.
It was co developed with the Range Rover so i expected it to do quite well. The engines are the same ones offered when the L322 was on sale
Yes, I was especially curious how the X5 would perform, and whether it was a 4.6is or a 4.8is (with xDrive).. I noticed the video states it is a 4.6is, but it does appear to be a 4.8is from the headlights.. If it is a 4.6is, I’m especially impressed. On 315 tires no less!
wont survive a water crossing due to underfloor battery. This is also how I totaled a GL.
The wider tires are an advantage. Larger the contact patch the better. 315s are a few inches wider than the other competitors which are typically 245-275.
Also not sure how they went about tire selection. Some vehicles didn’t have the same tire they came with from the factory on top of most of them being street tires. Tire selection and size has more of an effect on outcomes than anything.

it is obvious, because tlc 200 is a "true" frame based off-road SUV, that has a higher suspension travel than crossovers

That red Skoda looks like it's on dry summer street tires. Amazing that it got up at all. The BMW X5 did surprisingly well even with what looks like basic all season tires.
I was amazed that hard core offroaders were beaten by a VW Tiguan and BMW X5. Shows how useful traction control is.
On older cars without Traction control and electronics that can fail, a rear and front diff lock would make up for that…
It would have been a fair comparison if diff locks were applied on all cars that can do so and that haven’t got traction controll… specially on the 2007 land cruiser Prado it would have made a massive difference, as you have to adjust the vehicle situation for different terrains…
It’s no coincidence that most people going off-roading use old landcruisers, Hiluxes etc…
@@jimi272 Aftermarket lockers are expensive and sometimes unreliable. Nothing fair about comparing an offroad modified car to a stock one.
The fact that the "hardcore offroaders" need mods to compete with the "useless crossovers" is embarrassing..

If you want to do that, a fair comparison, you shouldn’t compare vehicles from different years/decades… comparing all new , let’s say produced after 2015, cars, and similar things with cars from the mid 2000s and mid 90s. That would be a fair comparison. And no, there are indeed landcruisers from that era that had diff lockers installed already. I mean they also put in the low range on the models that had it, a feature that is a must have for off-roading too…
The pajero sport did great, I never thought the traction control would be so effective. It would have also been interesting to see a 2021 suzuki jimny in this obstacle course

I’m really surprised by bmw X5 2002!
1) being the best on-roader among all (as SAV not SUV) but still can manage the off-road like this.
2) The oldest tech among all (2002) but still has beaten the newer ones.
3) The sport tire profile of the car.

BMW always had outstanding AWD system distribution managing to compensate the lack of low range transfer case and locking diffs in many cases.
It was developed alongside The range rover so it mostly uses land rover tech.

I seen some videos where a younger guy buys a beat up X5 and uses it for off-roading and it does pretty good. But most people wouldn't want to abuse their X5 like that.

The LC200 looked like it was equiped with the KDSS suspension, it’s wheel travel was more than enough to keep all wheels in contact with the ground. Some Prados also have this system.
Every Prado (LC150) that we get in North America (as the Lexus GX) has KDSS as standard.

I have a 2022 prado and yes it has kdss centre lock and front and rear lsd’s which almost works like a locker it spins all wheels at the same speed it works very good

Really surprised that you all did not include anything from Suzuki, especially since they basically pioneered the crossover with their SX4 and to this day the Jimmny and Vitara are widely used worldwide and was one of the first compact SUVs besides Jeep to make an impression.

The Yeti and Tiguan surprised me a lot
The traction control system of BMW is superb, despite having little suspension articulation , on road it managed to cross the obstacle very gracefully.

Mitsubishi doesn’t have Terrain Response. That’s a Land Rover technology.
@@jerrymyahzcat Yes Landrover has it too like many manufacturers these days my Pejero sport has different modes for the traction control, sand, snow, mud, gravel and rock crawl mode and center and rear diff locks. So I would find it interesting if he had changed the settings to see the results.🙂
@@MrMarkwatkinson no my point is Terrain Response is Land Rovers name. Probably copyrighted or trademarked. The Pajero Sport will have something similar but it’s not Terrain Response and doesn’t work the same way LR does. That was what I was saying.
So LR doesn’t have it too - only LR has it.
Terrain response is mainly a gimmick that adjusts throttle responses to stop novices hitting the throttle too hard and inducing wheel spin. When you lose traction it does not matter if you have terrain response or not.
Also why didn't they lock the rear diff? Would have made it much easier
I was impressed by the old BMW. But I think I'd have the most fun driving that little Skoda around.
The E-Pace was a surprise... only if you forget it's the same company as Land Rover. Now it makes sense!
That X5 looked sick
I am a bit surprised that the Outback performed so poorly, but the standout were clearly the Volkswagens, for a brand that isn´t considered to be off road inclined, their cars did great, and of course the toyotas did awesome with their traction control
Absolutely, I usually don't like their cars, but they performed stellarly here.
No surprise whatsoever. That generation Outback is beyond hopeless with that CVT. Proven multiple times by multiple YT channels and outlets.
Agree with other comments. It is well known that subarus with CVT have terrible low end torque to overcome obstacles. They are great on snow and mud, but when you need to puy lots of power on 1 or 2 wheels they fail.
Volkswagen's 4motion system is no joke

The VW Touareg and Prada was impressive but the Landcruiser is an absolute beast!!!

The X5 did rather good without low range and locking difs
There's no low range nor diff locks on x5s cz they are not meant to go off road. I'm so surprised that it did a lot better than don't off road worthy cars. Amazing bmw traction control!!

By far the most surprising vehicle was the X5. This thing is almost 20 years old and still has one of the best traction control! Really impressive.

The X5 btw is an 02 model meaning it has no Xdrive but more of a 4x4 system. 04 facelift and up has Xdrive. The X5 in the video also appears to have a facelift conversion for the people confused.
This X5 is 2002 but with 2004 front ;-)
X5 '02 model has planetary gear OPEN center differential (38/62 torque split) so this system must use brakes very hard for front/rear and left/right power split.
Would the Xdrive e70 do better due to newer traction control mapping? Or will do worst. I will wait for the test :)

Of course tires are different but anyway the there's no doubt about the different efficiency of electronic control.
But where the test has been done?
I found myself stuck in an ascent with my 2014 Montero Sport - without traction control and no rear axle diff lock. Learnt a thing or two, and this vid confirms it.
I'm impressed by X5 performance in this video i mean that car was not meant for offroading but still managed to make impressive results.
From this test we learn that you need power and traction control to climb slippery slope
Fully surprised about the Yeti (the first one) - this simple 4x4 with haldex 4th generation - very effective

1- test the BMW X7
2- It would be really cool to use a Drone to show the maneuvers from above too.
Some traction control systems have safeties for mechanical components. Smashing the throttle may disable the system so it doesn’t attempt to shock load the drivetrain if it stops one wheel. Sometimes light steady throttle and some patience makes a big difference.
"Yes, lets build an intricate off-road system and then neuter it because our customers are retarded children who will just break it."
Whats even the point of these AWD cars anymore...
My beloved Subaru 😥😥 they really need to ditch that CVT. The BMW always surprises of how good it is, even the X3 was impressive. Great content.
Hopefully they'll go back to hydrokinematic transmissions and use Aisin automats if Toyota are serious about owning them.
I say an 8 speed or 10 speed automatic is better than a CVT while still being fuel efficient

Great video. I have always been a fan of low range. Guess because I grew up in a rural area and learnt early how to always take the best lines .
But truth be told, from this video it seems that traction control is more important than low range.
If both are in place, its a cake walk.

I've got a Tiguan and have considered the touareg too. Both are really good off road. All Terrain tyres help a lit as does turning off traction control. This video was painful to watch with traction control on. I feel sorry for the clutches in the manual cars 😭😂😂
Tiguan ain't really for offroading. The touareg however is a different beast.
In this test we can clearly see that something as simple as a real difflock is essential to off road driving
Not at all. A diff lock isn’t needed in anything but the most extreme situations. Also a front diff lock is more effective in most situations to Pull you out rather than push you out.
