This Kawasaki Bayou 220 has been running and riding (mostly) since 1998!
Parts are gonna wear out!
This includes the Timing Chain!
The timing chain is an often overlooked, yet critical, part of your engine.
This chain has had a bit of a slap in our 220 Bayou, and we have finally decided to replace it.

I was given an old 1991 Bayou. I'd like to see if I can get it running again for my grandkids to scoot around on here on my property when they come visit. This machine doesn't appear to be beat to death or cobbled up and actually looks to be in great condition. The story was it was parked because of "electrical problems" so I'm hoping that's true and that the motor itself has no major issues and still has a few miles left in it. I removed the front wheels, both front & rear fenders and the gas tank so I could get at everything easier and give it a good pressure wash. Once I got that thick layer of old oil & dirt off the motor it was then that I noticed that the 10mm retaining bolt that goes to the chain tensioner was missing. That was a little concerning but it is what it is. I ordered a new manual chain tensioner like the one you put on your Bayou and should have it in a day or two. I hope that didn't do some damage. I can't tell what kind of shape the chain itself is in or what that might have done to the chain guides ?? I have zero experience with motorcycle engines but your video was a BIG help. I'm a little nervous about pulling the bottom casing off but it has to be done if I change to a new chain. I hate to not take advantage while the bike is tore down like this to just go ahead and replace that chain now. I think your tip on how to feed that chain up thru the guides with a tie wrap will come in handy 👍.

Awesome brother, was riding my 95 220 a couple of days ago and heard a loud tink sound and then the motor just revved down and stopped. I open her up and found my broken timing chain this afternoon. Had a few questions and this video answered all of them. If manualslib has the entire service manual for theses its a free download if you ever need to know torque specs or anything at all it breaks these down to every nut and bolt. Thanks again.

Hey I got it all taken apart and im looking in the bottom of the case for pieces of the broken timing chain i came across a bolt a Phillips head bolt chewed up a bit and broken off of something. I looked all over and couldn't see anywhere where it might have come from everything looks okay other then the broken chain. Where do you think it might have come from? Edit I think I figured it out its a bolt from the chain retainer. Must have vibrated out and caused the chain to come off.
