You don't _have_ to run that red wire to an ignition-controlled 12v source, you could also run it to the battery, and have an always-usable winch. Unless the instructions gave a really compelling reason not to do that. Could be more useful if the main fuse blows in the field when it's stuck in the mud.

The lights are always on with the ignition. I did it that way on purpose for safety!
