    A review of the Master Grade Turn A Gundam (∀ Gundam) from the 1999 anime series Turn A Gundam.
    Intro - 00:00
    Build - 0:41
    Appearance - 4:00
    Articulation - 6:10
    Gimmicks - 10:12
    Verdict - 14:13
    Super happy to have this kit off my turn table. Anyway, thanks to everyone that's held on as long as you have. I announced this review like 2 months, so I know this was annoying. But hey, it's done, and I'll promise I'll be a bit more transparent if this happens again. Thanks, everyone!
    -- Production Notes for later reference --
    - This review was done in small chunks over the course of about 2 months. I got sick, then had schoolwork, then a bit more sickness. Still, I feel this is probably the best review I’ve made to date, partially because I was able to devote so much time to each section of it.
    - The most noticeable change from previous videos is the volume of the background music. I realized it could get kind of repetitive, especially as these videos get longer, so turning it down should help people get through more of the video.
    - The script took a very long time. It was actually about as long as the Alex ver 2.0 review’s script. I had 2 rants, each about a page long. The 2nd rant is on ABS plastic and is in the video, but the 1st was in Appearance and explained why the Turn A is a great design. But after editing it and finding references from Art Deco and Futuristic Architecture to use, I realized it was a little pretentious, and scrapped it
    - I messed with the ‘picture styles’ on my camera for this review. I never really paid attention to them because I shot everything in RAW which doesn’t use them, but as it turns out they do affect video. So, I did some tests, and settled with very low contrast and a slight bump to color saturation.
    - It looks really solid, but unfortunately I messed up on my exposure, so EVERYTHING was underexposed. This wasn’t a huge deal on the still images since they’re in RAW, so I could just bump up the exposure no problem (there is a little more grain in the background though…), but the video was rough. Each shot was slightly different, so I ended up applying correction to each clip individually.
    - This kit was a NIGHTMARE to pose. Every single joint was LOOSE. I can’t stress that enough. I ended up having to get footage over the course of 4 nights because I kept getting frustrated.
    - 4 nights of shooting of course meant I overshot this review. Way more than any previous video. The folder for this review is 27 gigs. Usually, I only hit around 20.
    - I dreaded the articulation section, so just rushed through it. That’s why some of the articulation shots are kind of out of focus.
    - The audio was pretty straight forward here. I didn’t do anything too weird. I do think I’ve hit the peak of what my current microphone can put out.
    - The title card was weird here. It was the first time I’ve tried to make a nighttime shot. I just cranked the contrast, and added a blue filter, but IDK if it really worked. For the shadows on the Turn A, I made 2 layers over top, cranked the contrast on each, set the blending to darken (or screen, I don’t remember), then erased the sections that should be hit with the moon light, thus brighter. A little overboard, but still a nice new tool in my Photoshop arsenal.
    - The editing was essentially two long sit downs. It was relatively straightforward. Some minor things though - No more dates under the boxes of kits, it’s just not worth the effort. - Learned how to rotate text, as seen in the opening. - A lot of these shots are too digitally zoomed in, so a little blurry. I need to stay on that. - The Turn A line art is pretty low res, but its all I could find. - I cut a section about how the Turn A could be tan-ish color.
    - This will be the last time I plan on using 3 different shots for each pose, one left, right, and middle. I’m thinking it’d save me a ton of time if I just got the middle shot, then when I needed a shot with the kit on the right side, I just move it over in the editing and use a black gradient to cover the other side. I could then place text over top of the gradient for whatever I need. I’m going to try it on the next casual review.
    - Part of me thinks I’ve about hit the peak of these reviews. I’m going to continue to work through New Year’s, but I really think I’ve gotten everything out of this that I can. I do have Char’s Gelgoog, and two casual reviews to knock out, with plans to have them out in December, but after that...? I think that’ll be it for me, boys. We’ll see.
    Anyway, here’s some music from the last 2 months:
    • 今井美樹- 雨にキッスの花束を
    • Andrew Scott - Round E...
    • 脇田もなり/ TAKE IT LUCKY!!... Sad to see Especia go. 脇田もなり's solo stuff almost makes up for it though.

    Fun fact; Syd Mead is the designer of Turn A.
    ......while that in itself is well known, what is probably less well known, is unlike the mobile suits designed before the Turn A, the Turn A was designed with a full internal design graph with "built as an MG model kit from the start" in mind, as Syd Mead was fascinated by the MG model having a full internal frame and decided to design the Turn A Gundam with that kept in mind.
    The MG model of Turn A was in fact built according to Syd Mead's design and is the first model to have no PC parts for joints.

Afterall it was already designed by him, so that almost makes it an unnamed Ver. Ka. like the Sinanju Stein NT. Ver. As for RG, I still don't know if it'd be enough to top this, yea RG's have come a LONG way since the Grandaddy Gundam, but I almost feel this is literally the best Bandai could have done, aside from(and almost guaranteed to never happen) a 2.0, even though I don't see the need, or complete overkill with a Perfect Grade. The only downside is we don't get that seperate pilot figure for the cockpit, makes it a little hard to paint it and honestly discourages me to paint it like the Gundam Ver Ka and the God Gundam. • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, you'll be fine. The MG Alex's ver 2.0's build was super simple, especially compared to other ver 2.0 kits. The only tricky part of the Alex's build is all the black detailing, but with how great that part separation was you shouldn't have any trouble. If you've built legit plane models too, then you're already over qualified lol

    I really appreciate the effort and organization gone into this video, including all the editting. A bit generous on the articulation score given the loose joints, but, fair enough, to each their own.
    I also wondered, in comparison, what you thought of the HGCC counterpart. Noticed you nearly only have MG reviews up, do you avoid HGs like the plague? Haha, keep up the great work!

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The High Grade version is a pretty solid kit too. It's very much just a smaller, cheaper version of this kit. Even has the moving fins on the back of the leg. But being an HG, there's a few stickers, specifically the gray lines on the arms and thigh that are inner frame on this kit, the HG's cannon is entirely white and there's some red stickers on the legs. There's also some more require gray painting for on the legs. It's a solid buy for it's price, but this MG is my preferred Turn A for sure.

    Im watching the serie nowaday, because i liked the strange desing and vibe of the serie itself, its very strange, a lot of weird stuff, but a very nice ambient. About the MG i would like to get it, even if the inner frame is not that interesting.

    This is a rather unusual Gundam, it was designed by famous automotive artist Syd Mead, which was unheard of in Japan at that time and is still something of an anomaly in anime. Honestly, I like it too, but I'd have to do something about that crazy Warrio-like mustache and the typical color scheme.

    • @matthewjoyner1595
      @matthewjoyner1595 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cockpit is almost always inside the chest so there’s never been a reason to have a head, realistically. They do fill the head with sensors and that is how the Gundam “sees” but the head is completely unnecessary. It makes them look more human

  • @twraia
    @twraia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really wanted to get this but now having second thoughts after seeing your review. The kit looks very floppy. And given that the issue seems to do with the ABS plastic, I am not sure how effective it would be to attempt to solidify the kit a bit with a layer of topcoat or thickening the joints with some varnish. It’s a shame because I really like the design and would love to have this kit to complete a set with the turn X

    • @redheadphones6
      @redheadphones6  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's still a great kit, it just loses some poseability over the years. It you already have the Turn X, then this kit would look great next to it. I say go for it. And if after a few months/years the kit becomes floppy, you could always try that top-coat or glue to tighten some of the pieces up. There are ways to get it solid again, but worse comes to worse, just having him standing next to the Turn X would be worth the price in my mind. Best of luck!
