A review of the 1997 Master Grade Gundam GP01 "Zephyranthes" from the anime series Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.
Uh... 28 minutes? I intended to make a longer video because I like rambling about old kits, but this might be a little too much... Still let me know if you like these longer videos or prefer quicker 15 minute videos.

- The reason for the delay was all the new stuff I tried with this video. My day job also dumped a bunch of video work on me too. That accounted for a good month gap in there.
- We're in 4K now! Thanks to the new computer, I can actually move up from 1080p! Really happy with it, though there have been a ton of growing pains. Thankfully, this new computer is crazy powerful so my usual trial-and-error was pretty easy to work through.
- The 28 minutes... So basically, I regularly hear that people like these videos as background noise. Some even say they're like ASMR. So I decided to try and lean into that vibe. I think I bit off more than I could chew though, as an older kit like this already has like 20 minutes worth of info anyway, so adding in additional rambling got me to around 35 minutes. I then went back and edited it down to the 28.
- The script was massive to fit in more rambling, sitting at 15 pages compared to the usual 7-8. There's just so much to talk about with older kits. It was mainly all this painting though. That was going to be about 7-8 minutes even at the usual pacing. Then I had to make the other sections almost as long as to not have the video too lopsided. Again, this was the wrong kit to try and go longer with lol
- No title card here. I just didn't feel up to it. I do enjoy those, but this video burned me out a little too much. Maybe if I ever re-upload this video.
- I'm not happy with the audio. Way too many mouth sounds. Of course, it's been a hot minute since I last recorded audio, so I'm going to assume this was just rust.
- The music is turned WAY down. Part of me likes not having background music, but it's really useful in masking poor audio (which I still somehow have). However, with a 28 minute video it'd get annoying real fast, so I turned it way down here. Think I need to commission new music. Andrew, if you're reading this, let me know!
- The footage was shot in 4k with a Canon R5 and my that RF 100mm Macro. Such a crazy lens and it's totally the right tool for this job. However, it picks up EVERYTHING. All the little microscopic pieces of dust/hair, cuts/nubs and paint flaws. I think I need step it up building wise to compensate.
- The slider gave me some issues. My camera with the 100mm lens is just too heavy and causes the slider to tilt forward during it's panning. The only 2 fixes are to buy a 3rd party mount to better distribute the camera load, or I buy a better slider. Would really like to find a 3rd option instead lol
- Editing the slider footage was weird too. I noticed the stabilization effect had it's zoom-in set to 'auto' so some shots would zoom .2% while others would be .4% etc. I tried to standardize the zoom and set them all to 1%. However, none of the shots matched. You can see how poorly they fit together. Not sure what went wrong. Maybe the 4k giving more detail? The slider footage itself being bad? Or maybe I should leave it at auto. Need to investigate.
- Editing was done in daily 3-4 hour sit downs over the course of 2 weeks. There was just so much to edit. Thanks to these short bursts though, I got real weird with it. Like the manual shots having black surrounding the important sections, or the inserts using fades instead of hard edges, or how I FINALLY fixed the weird crossfade on the scoring sections.
- YES, I finally fixed the crossfading into/from black. Check older videos, whenever there's a fade to/from a scoring section with the black gradient on the left, during the transition you always see the edge of the underlying footage. I usually just use a black gradient .png I made, but this time I tried cropping the underlying footage and cranking up the feathering. It has the exact same effect, but because the edge of the image fades into the black, there's no weird hard edge! Going to use this going forward.
- Thanks for checking those notes, they're kinda just for me, but if it helps you avoid my mistakes, then no complaints here. All of the Stardust Memory MGs desperately need 2.0’s.
I seconded this. Absolutely need 2.0 with great frame like the RX-78 and Zaku II, but with engineering on nowaday kits.
We also need a Gerbera Tetra MG
I need the MG GP02 2.0 so bad. It's a pretty popular Gundam but Bandai just ignore that fact and ignore MG fans nowadays
even the HGs, for their age they even looked very detailed

I always love your old-MG reviews. You explore every single aspect of it with respect (even though it's outdated) and not just saying that the kit is old and it's shit. I truly want you to keep reviewing old MGs. If you ran out of Gundam MGs, try the old Zeon Suit MGs. They should serve you well 👍

I agree. There’s a lot to be respected from older kits, they have a much simpler build and can be a lot of fun if you’ve been stuck building super complex Ver Ka’s or MGs like Wing Zero or Eclipse. That’s how I felt after building the 1.5 RX782. It was a relaxing and low stakes build experience.

This is one of the best reviews for this kit, it is unfortunate that it is often overlooked due to it's age. The GP01 is such a cool design and a Ver. Ka would be pretty epic.

Holds up a bit better than I expected, it is weird though this suit keeps getting passed over for a 2.0/katoki treatment, it's one of the more recognizable suits especially in the west thanks to the toonami airing of 0083. Ah well, maybe it'll get the MGEX treatment and we'll get both armor sets like the PG or somthin
Wow! There's not a ton of reviews of the old 0083 MG's with high quality footage like this, so I've always been hesitant to buy one as I'm not sure what they'd look like built and detailed up. This video is much appreciated! It actually doesn't look that bad, once it's got the paint on.
Yeah, it's kinda surreal seeing a kit that was released back when VHS was still going strong, in 4K 16:9 lol. It really puts these older kits in a new light, and hopefully gets people to try some of these classic kits.
I remember really wanting one of these as a little kid when they were quite new. Hopefully it'll get a 2.0 sooner than later.

I love your simple suggestion modeling techniques, especially using the pink Gundam marker for the mono eye, i've used the technique on my Gouf MG 2.0 and looks amazing! I love to see more zeong kits as "zaku's are cooler". I adore your work and hope to see more in the future!

Honestly, a longer video from you like this is a dream come true. I always end up binging your reviews, and since you always go more in depth than other reviewers, I always wish that there were more or that they were longer. I'd love to see that MG V2 Ver ka covered in this much detail.

The MG V2 Ver Ka is on my shelf right now. Trying to decide between that and the Sazabi ver KA.
As always excellent work, always dig seeing these older kits and your approach/expertise always lend to very fair and informative reviews. Watching through all these got me to pick up a copy of the Guncannon and my shop regularly stocks the Kampfer and I want to give that one a shot as well.

I could watch your videos all day, man! I love your reviews so much. Lots of people look at old MGs as useless and trashy but I have a huge soft spot in my heart for these older kits. I built the MG RX-78-2 1.5 after doing a complex build (RG Hi-Nu) and I fell in love with the simplicity. I love to paint my kits and put my work into them, so these old MGs give me a lot of enjoyment from the hobby. It’s so useful to have someone who doesn’t dismiss these kits, and your reviews are factual and relaxed, and you aren’t beholden to a monetization schedule where you have to pump out reviews, so you spend more time building your kits (in the Hi-Nu review you mentioned how the decals fell of after a month of handling, even after top-coating and setter, which proves you don’t buy just to review). Keep doing what your doing Red :)

This particular kit had a lot more than most, but one thing I really appreciate about your reviews is how you point out all the areas that need painting. I don't fully paint my kits, but I do like to correct any areas that aren't color accurate, as well as adding decals, top coat, and some light weathering. It's great having someone who actually points out all the areas that need attention. I'm always paranoid that I'll miss something.

Fantastic review as always. Built this kit a few months ago and had a great time with it! Definitely more of a traditional plastic model (with the need to paint a good amount of the kit) than modern gunpla.

Straight up, if you're willing to put in the extra love, this kit can be BEAUTIFUL. I picked it up about a year ago because it was really cheap at my local shop and because of that I wasn't afraid to paint it up and it's now one of my favorite builds!
@@connor___ the cheap factor is crucial. I'm not in a position where I can constantly buy kits so having one that could take me more than one day is huge for me xD. Sometimes you get home from work and there's nothing like drink a beer while doing some cleaning or painting.

My first Mg and still a favorite build. Such a great kit. I've done the Pg and I might like this better pound for pound
Just recently got this kits after looking for it for years. It really pops out after repainting the whole kits and I really love it.
Also I modified the extra palm hand so it can hold the shield on the front just like in the anime. :)
Stardust Memory needs a Ver.KA kit so badly, it's insane that they haven't even bothered with a 2.0 at all yet. Ultimately, the ones that we do have still look nice. Even the G Gundam MG's of this time still look nice, despite the build being abysmal by today's standards. Still really like seeing reviews of these sorts of kits though, and the idea of detail parts in the box is something that I wouldn't mind seeing more of, maybe just in the form of parts for an optional build of a section.

A lot of the old MGs at the time were probably based on the redesigns by Katoki (Zeta 1.0 is a prominent example) in order to make them more viable to make model kits out of, and they were not supposed to be anime/original-design accurate.

This kit desperately need 2.0 treatment. Yes, it is outdated. But the appearance is quite good. Unfortunately, it needs too much work for bring out its full potential. If there is still no news about the 2.0 of this kit in the future, maybe I'll try the RG. Although I personally prefer 1/100 over 1/144.

Honestly looks like a pretty fun kit. The Guncannon and the Ver Ka RX 78 2 master grades were fun to do some touching up with gundam markers. This looks like it needs a lot of effort, but that's what makes it fun. Only thing that worries me is that a lot of these kits floating around right now are possibly older prints with older plastic and aged stickers, making the eye sticker maybe not stick as well as it should. Eye painting is a real pain.

Stardust Memories deserved a Ver. Ka since most of the famous UC gundams are in that line.
Honestly, I think the High grade is the way to go here, mainly because despite its age, it's actually one of the more impressive early High Grades.
Now if only I had a Real Grade to complete the trifecta...

20:29 Bandai should make extra V-fins (and other fragile components) a standard part of every kit, or at least include them as metal components.
I will say that I managed to see the RG version of the GP01 in person recently at a hobby store, and it looks really, really sharp. Although the hinges on the cockpit are still grey. Go figure.

Id love to see a review on either of the new mg dom kits due to their weird semi 2.0 updated pieces.
These old Startdust Memory MGs are essentially “Ver. Ka(toki)” versions of the original Shoji Kawamori designs of the GP01 and the GP02. Katoki did the redesigns for the MG kits, but they aren’t official “Ver.Ka” releases.
Katoki also designed the GP03 for the anime, so that’s a “Ver.Ka” in all but name, by default.
The same goes with the GM type C, which not incidentally shares a lot of parts with the MG RX-78-2 Gundam “Ver.Ka” kit.
Old Master Grades or MG 1.0 is fun to built regardless of bad articulation and limited poses they had. I'm a fan of building 1/144 HGs but when I build MG GM Ground Type, I said it looks like the Latest Updated Version of High Grades in terms of overall reviews but I Realize that Building Old MG's is like you are travelling at time machine 😁😁
Just built mine. The shield can be fairly loose, but I just have to push it together hard enough and it stays pretty secure. Not bad for a pre 2000 kit.

That sounds about right for an older kit🤔. I paint almost all of my kits to some degree so having to do work on it doesn’t bother me, but flip side I could get a 3rd party kit if I wanted a different kind of build(which I’m doing at the moment). Still, rad review buddy👍
Thanks! Also yeah, I'm not against painting at all. It's part of what makes Gunpla fun. For me though, it's the difficulty of the painting that can be an issue. Like the V on the chest here. It's fine that it's not in the right color, not a big deal, but having it molded into the chest and making it so annoying to paint up is where I tend to complain. I'm so glad Bandai eventually moved to giving us separate pieces for little details like that. It's so much more fun to detail up.
This kit is pretty good, I love the design and the GP01Fb expansion actually makes it look better. I presume they were marketing this as kits for pro modellers back then hence the seam lines that need to be fixed.
We should have got 2.0 ver ka's of the Gundam Development project Gundams instead of the Zeta, yes it was the last of the big four but come on Stardust Memory Katoki was involved in.
