A review of the Master Grade Hi-Nu Gundam version Katoki (ver KA). It is an alternate interpretation of the iconic Nu Gundam from the anime film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.
This review is a ‘redo’ of a previous review. I’ve never been happy with that original review, so thought it’d be cool to make a new version up to my current production standards. The scores are also a bit more accurate, as the original review was only my 5th or 6th video, and I hadn’t quite fine-tuned things.

- This review was made over the course of about 9 months. Because this is a ‘redo’ review, I always had it on the backburner in favor of new reviews, only working on it when it was convenient.
- For example, the articulation footage was actually shot first. I was doing some other review (Gyan?) and already had the camera set up for articulation, so decided to get some quick Hi-Nu shots before breaking everything down.
- The articulation footage was shot using my old 100D and 24mm EF-S lens, as when I originally shot it, I didn’t have my 35mm lens for my 6D.
- 6 months later, while I was working on the Shining Gundam (or F90, I don’t remember) I decided to score some general footage since I already had the camera set up for those other videos.
- Then I wrote the script, but did it on and off between writing the F90 review.
- After finishing the F90, I got to work on the audio to ground the production and take inventory of what I had and what I still needed to get.
- I recorded this audio twice. The first time around I wasn’t happy with it, so I did it again. Not that big a deal, but after I edited the 45 minute raw audio down to 23, Audacity corrupted my save, so I had to do it again. Ugh~
- Then I decided to just start editing. I got the audio lined up, and just edited what I could up to the commentary, leaving massive gaps in visuals for things I didn’t have. Once done, I knew exactly what extra footage I needed to get to fill those gaps.
- Still photography went well as I knew EXACTLY what I needed based the gaps in my edit. Also, by this point, I had my Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and Canon 35mm f/2, so much cleaner footage than before.
- I took extra time to make sure the colors matched between the stills and video. Turns out I was shooting video in sRGB, but exporting my RAW images using Adobe RGB. Adobe is more saturated, while sRGB is more neutral. Having both my video and stills on same color space led to more consistent colors all around. Of course, shooting this video with month long gaps in between led to some inherent inconsistencies anyway… Still, learned something new.
- I really wish I could’ve gotten better shots of the LED. I tried some pitch black shots, and messed with my camera, but it just wasn’t showing through. In general, the LED was just really weak. I hope people don’t blame my camera/me for Bandai making bad LED’s… but then again, I could’ve been more elaborate in my explanation in the video, so it’s 50/50 imo.
- Same goes for the fin funnels. There’s a very vocal minority that says they’re perfect and everyone is just not folding them right. Hopefully me showing the manual and the ‘correct’ way of folding the funnels helps put those claims to rest.
- Using all that new footage, I plugged the gaps in the edit, and had a full video. This made the editing much less stressful, as I didn’t just have 20 minutes to fill, but a lot of small gaps of maybe only a minute to fill. If that makes any sense.
- This video is LONG. But then again, it is a version Katoki, so it makes sense. If anything, the original review was way too short.
- The encoding gave me issues. This video took 2 and half hours to encode! For some reason, Adobe kept crashing at random points. Thankfully, I reverted to an older version of Encoder, and it worked again.
- I’m a big fan of the title card. I was originally going to get lazy with it, and I was for the most part. However, putting it all together, I think it turned out very good. I really like the ‘color match’ stuff I figured out in the Gyan review. It does wonders for space shots and high contrast stuff like that F90 and this Hi-Nu title card.
- Also, I’m trying to use fewer words for the thumbnails. Just make them a little less busy.
- I made an additional video explaining this is a redo video. I just thought it could clear up some confusion. It's unlisted now.

The relaxed, low-energy/intensity, simplified review style in these videos is why I watch them for fun instead of research as it is with so many other Gunpla-related channels.

Any interest in the P-Bandai HWS set for the Hi-Nu? The North American preorders went up the other day. I don't have the Hi-Nu Ver. Ka yet, but I'm tempted because I like the Nu HWS, another design that went unused in CCA. (So the Hi-Nu HWS is double unused!)
I would love expansion pack reviews by him! There’s never good, detailed reviews of them!
I have the Hi Nu and the HWS. It's on my display. It looks nice with some drawbacks: The gun and the shield are way too heavy for the arms so you will have to do some reinforcing if you wanna pose it. Also, you'll just have to keep it on the stand. Don't even try to pose it standing up. All in all I think it looks way better with the armor than without it.

I just built this kit a couple of kits ago.Yes, I now measure time in builds 😂 It's one of my favorite builds so far. I even made it through the waterslides without a hitch. I was sweating on the fin funnels. I used Micro Sol to set them 😁 I shot a couple of coats of clear on them ASAP and managed to seal them in nicely.
you're the only youtuber i know of who says out "version katoki" almost every time. mad respect

I got this, and I have an issue: anyone know how to keep the body from falling off of the backpack and head/neck when in the air? It keeps falling apart on me... as there is nothing holding the head and neck onto the rest of the body, except for a backplate, in front of the backpack. every time I left it off the ground with the stand, the body falls. :(
I've noticed that there is another mg of the hi-nu floating around. The one in question has a blue color scheme instead of purple. Is the blue one any different from the ver.ka? If so is it any good? No one ever talks about the blue one and the few reviews I can find of it are pretty old, but I much prefer the light blue over the dark purple.
It's an older kit, so expect a dated build.
I am new to gundam so I have a HWS EXPANSION SET for Hi-v GUNDAM Ver.Ka Hi-Nu Model Kit and like to know what gundam frame should I use?

As good as the new RG Hi Nu, I love the legs on the MG version. It look like one of those old jets side air intake especially the Harrier.

Pretty good update review man. Anyways whats your opinion on that announced Rg Hi Nu that coming out in the summer of 2021. I personally like how the Rg Hi nu has a nice mix of the Novel/Katoki design with elements from the 2007 redesign.
It's going to be interesting for sure. I'm really curious how the fin funnels will be handled. If the part separation is there for that blue/purple, it might be a great way for fans to add the Hi-Nu to their shelves.

This is my favorite variant of the original hi nu design since its 5he closest to the original izubuchi design. Also it's purple which is a huge bonus since ever since the 1.0 mg redesign every hi nu since then has been blue. Also I just find the balance between detail and simplicity to be perfect that I think added details kinda hurt it since it might be too overbearing in the context of this ms. (Ergo why I prefer hguc sazabi compared to the rg sazabi for example)

What’s your go to gold paint? I saw your shining Gundam video and was impressed with the gold. Was it a Gundam Marker?
I used a Krylon metallic spray paint called "Gold Leaf." I haven't used Krylon paint for anything else, as I only received that color as a gift from a friend, but it did a great job of making a gold that both popped, but didn't distract from the rest of the suit.

I have the HGUC Hi-Nu so is the cannon colors Purple and off white or the teal/blue of the HGUC?
The official setting is the royal blue and silver gray of the HGUC.
The first colored rendition of the Hi Nu was from Hobby Japan magazine in 1990. Back then it used blue (though it’s also near to purple) and gray.
It was the 1998 Dengeki Data collection that is known to have the Hi-Ni Gundam colored in purple with yellow vents.
Bandai has alternated between the purple and the royal blue color and gray color scheme even before the 2007 MG came out at least for the cover art. The 1/144 B-Club Hi Nu Gundam from 1996 used the blue and gray, while the 1/100 conversion that came in 2002 tried the striped shield look with the gradient colors on the funnels but using the purple color scheme.
I love this version of the Hi-Nu, but I prefer the older version of the pattern on the funnels. I color matched and painted the entire funnel instead.

On yeah have you checked out that new life size walking RX-78-f00 Gundam in Yokohama? It's unbelievable.
Might I suggest the normal hi ni mg? It would be interesting seeing a comparison since it's a redesign in more blue and also quite interesting.
Plus I have a suspicion the shooting effect parts from the mg hi ni might be compatible with ver ka which is why the funnels on ver ka also seem to have the tabs nessecary to insert those effects.
i'm so glad the purple color on the funnels are decals, indont like that so now i can just not apply those :)))
if you have the Sinanju (narrative version i think) this kit looks really good with the leftover heavy beam rifle

Hmmm, wonder if the green led would have actually been more visible. Generally speaking I find green leds tend to be more vibrant and brighter than blue.

It's different for every person. Personally, a build like this took me about 2-3 days, working a few hours after work per day. It's nothing too time consuming, but worth taking your time to really enjoy the engineering and how all the pieces come together.

I have a review of the Zeta Plus A1. That's basically the same kit, but has some weird stickers for the wing binders.

What is a version Katoki?
if those are bandai's led, it has been known that their quality isnt the best. they flicker and not that bright. you get way better result using cheaper 3rd party led, brighter.
This reminds me of the Alex Gundam style machine.
I think the RG’s color separation may make it both a more complex and better build,since it has the purple and white fully separated,and the kit is overall easier to store due to its smaller scale

i agree about the waterslides for the fin funnels...not great..very fragile
Imo I just let the fin funnels completely white. Mabye once I get a setup for painting them I would paint them, but from personal experience using water side decals(and 3 of them at that) is just a recipe for disaster on the fin funnels.
The way i deal with the heavy rifle i by having him in a constant two handed shoting pose

The blue MG version was a redesign. The purple version is how it looked in the novel Char's Counterattack - Beltorchika's Children.

Tbh you should pick up the Real Grade Hi Nu. It looks to be an amazing version of this suit.
i kind of wish there was a version of hi-v with original design but with redesign style funnel's color scheme, i hate how the colors alternate in such abnormal way
My biggest issue with this model is that for a minor led gimmick.. it puts way to much weight on the back with a weak connection from the back to the chest making it fall apart on me to much

Those decals are why I painted mine. I had to teach myself how to do a fade. Honestly it was easy and mixing the purple it uses is easy(it's almost exactly mr. color purple) but I had some trouble getting a blue I liked because hi blue is best hi nu. Tho the circles on the knees on mine wouldn't go in on mine. I'm about to have to solve that problem seeing as that's almost where I am on my build
