  • In the year 1999 Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the Gundam franchise, would return to the series and create what some would call the culmination of his life's work. Turn A Gundam is a series so full of heart, soul and compassion that it has become a must watch for any Mecha anime fan.

Turn-A really ties all the Gundam themes that came before it together:
    1. There are Newtypes, but their powers don't matter, because nobody even remembers why they were important. Instead, the Newtypes did what they were always supposed to do: resolve misunderstandings peacefully.
    2. Earth and space are fighting, but only Agrippa believes in any kind of space centric philosophy, and everyone knows he's full of it, and just kinda play him. I also imagine it's not a coincidence that the fake pacifist is named after the first Roman Emperor's second in command.
    3. The apparent Char clone has no secret ambitions, and no tragic past: he really is exactly what he acts like, because he has no need to be anything else.
    4. The low body count really helps paint each death as a tragedy instead of a statistic.
    5. All of the war mongers are blatantly childish, even the few smart ones, to the point where everyone just eventually seems be done with their crap. Even Guin and Merrybell seem to have finally grown up by the end of things, becoming actually likeable people.

Well, really, his desire to destroy the Turn A from the moment he's introduced makes much more sense in hindsight. Happy Tomino is something else as a director, I'm always amazed of how someone can make both this and Zeta.
I would also recommend Overman King Gainer, the very next show Tomino would direct after this, and one that would probably solidify his style to this day. It is also a sort of happy mecha show, but much more focused and "hype", it has similar beats to Turn A and overall just top notch.

My favourite Gundam series, though I might say it's Zeta some days. Zeta is a mood.
I love the way Turn A humanizes its characters while still maintaining Gundam's more operatic - almost Shakespearean - feel. That persistent tension of war running through the series works because I genuinely did not want to see these two peoples fight, which is truly an achievement given that that's usually what I'm there for in what is a giant robot action series like Gundam.
On another note, I have a Turn A Gundam artbook which contains the iterative design process by Syd Mead, it's genuinely fascinating. Mead's initial design for the Turn A was essentially a slightly rougher version of the SUMO but with a Gundam's face hidden in the dome-like helmet, he'd retool it into the SUMO later with a very Mead-esque asymmetric sensor unit over where the Gundam face was that we'd eventually see. Two of the elements Tomino asked for initially were the "womb-like" cockpit and general sense of sleekness, the defining charm point of the Turn A - the mustache - came about as Mead played around with the samurai aesthetic.
One of the earlier things Tomino noted on Mead's Gundam designs, the main hero Gundam should:
    - Be thin in design like a karateka or kickboxer while enemy units can be bigger and more wrestler-like in contrast (which is funny since the SUMO unit was originally dubbed Sumo Gundam by Mead).
    - It should look "benign", at least when it's inactive.
    - It should have a head that looks like it could have a person in it even if in-uinvese it's technically just a housing for the external sensors.
    - It can't be too detailed because reproducing such a thing for an animated series would be impossible.
These details are pretty consistent with every Gundam series that followed as well if you think about it.
There was a lot of details on things I'd never imagine considering, like "how to design a cockpit where two people can survive the vaccuum of space for a week" or the elaborate inner-workings and the loading process for the Turn A's chest-based missile launchers which... it would never really use.

" It should have a head that looks like it could have a person in it even if in-uinvese it's technically just a housing for the external sensors." I don't really get how this is 'shown' in the design compared to like any other gundam haha. I'm not doubting what you are reporting, but do you have more information about the implementation of this design request specifically? Or can you explain how Turn A implements this specific aspect (or is this just something that Tomino requested as a general sort of thing to make sure it would still be consistent with prior Gundams just so that Mead wouldn't do something really weird with the head shape?)

    Rest in peace Syd Mead.
Honestly, I tend to be very critical of Tomino's work, often feeling like his shows are incredibly messy at the best of times. And if they work, then it is usually in spite of his involvement rather than cause of it. Turn A however I have felt being an exception. While some of my usual gripes with him are still present, I found them not as overbearing here as in his other shows and the whole show was just something special.

Syd Meads interpretation of a gundam is amazing, and it really shows his roots with car design when the gundam looks less like a mecha but rather a vehicle with the eyes being like headlights and the v fin as the bumpers, and the overall sleek and abstract shapes that make up the entire body is so unique its like looking at a futuristic rendition of the humble beetle although that analogy would be wrong since its actually a butterfly nonetheless it is truly beautiful, people specifically the really critical gundam fans are more used to the generic formula or outline of what a gundam should look like and even Turn A isn't that huge of a departure that even if you showed it to someone who hasn't watched that much gundam and have them guess if the robot is a gundam or not they would probably say it is, point is Turn A is a very unique take on gundam and it is truly a breath of fresh air when every gundam goes through the same kind of thing within their own universes, heck after war X literally looks like gundam wing but it was actually part of the universal century timeline that's how bad the uncanny similarities are and Im glad Turn A took a different route and chose to be the black sheep of Gundam

Gotta confess, when Turn A first came out, I didn't watch it because of the mech designs. It wasn't until I discovered the song, Moon, and dug into its OST that I finally gave it a chance.
It is definitely an acquired taste, as the pacing is not your typical mecha series, but I ended up liking it. The Turn A and SUMO definitely grew on me, along with the WaDom, and when the Turn X got revealed, I was sold on Syd Mead's MS designs. What especially helped was the revelation that Turn A was practically a WMD itself, along with its role in the Dark History, as well as revealing both UC and AUs were connected.
As grating as Sochie was, I ended up liking her alot, along with Queen Diana and Harry Ord. I also find Loran to be a proper pacifist as opposed to peace by guns from other series, so he ended up near the top as far as Gundam protagonists go.
And in mentioning Moon, pretty much any song that shares the same melody as Moon ended up being instant favorites in the soundtrack, especially Tsuki no Mayu, the second ending theme. I also don't think Yoko Kanno could make a bad soundtrack, but was especially true for me with her 90s work. Her music got me liking Macross Plus, and I was more willing to give jazz a chance through Cowboy Bebop. Beyond the 90s, we have Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. Both Inner Universe and Rise gave me chills.
Anyways, happy to find fans of Turn A Gundam. It was definitely unlike any Gundam series before or after it. And we had G Gundam.

@@Soniman001 that’s just how some people are haha, when they don’t get reciprocated interest early on turn cold and borderline cruel. Loran is a simple boy with simple needs and he doesn’t yet understand the complexity of romance; just admiration of and loyalty to his queen. So he never picked up on Sochie’s interest in him, even after she picked him for the ritual, because he doesn’t understand the importance of those rituals. If he can’t understand that, he’s not gonna understand the romantic interest sochie has in him even though, to viewers, she’s not subtle AT ALL.
Why do you think that she pays attention to Gavan and always makes a big show about him in front Loran other than to try and evoke a response from him and also because she feels like if she can’t get that kindness and investment from Loran, then she might as well get it from Gavan. And she explicitly remarks about this to Mieshei when she asks if sochie is gonna go through with it even though her heart clearly isn’t in it and mieshei knows that, ‘but Gavan is so nice to me’, or something along those lines.
I dunno, maybe it just makes more sense to me because I know people who are exactly like her IRL and act the same way about romance and tend to act out their feelings in really weird or passive, aggressive ways and try to find replacements for the love they cant get from the person they want and so they act in irrational and dramatic ways
“I can’t get love from the one I want and I don’t know if it’s something he thinks is wrong with me or something wrong with him, but regardless I’m mad at him for not feeling the way I do even though I haven’t explicitly told him how I feel, and If I can’t get it from him, I’ll just take the next person who shows me interest.”
Which is Also another part of why she hates Dianna and especially resents her sister so much, even after learning that it’s not really Diana’s fault that her dad died, but because LORAN always talks about how Diana is the best. Also when he was constantly projecting his feelings about Diana onto Kihel, this also bothered sochie because he seemed to have a particularly intense attraction and admiration of her for seemingly no reason that he shouldn’t also appreciate sochie (at least in her own mind)
Basically, she just hates it that he seems to give more attention and care towards people that are not her. It’s pretty obvious what the author was intending to do with this one sided romance story that is woven throughout the show and why it is even brought up in the epilogue at all.
Just because it doesn’t make sense to you why someone would act that way. It doesn’t mean that it’s not in there and that it’s not very obviously what the author is intending.

I think you all are getting a bit ahead of yourselves. Sophie and Loran are 18. She needs time to heal from Gavane even if she thinks she doesn’t. Diana is dying and wanted to die on earth. Yes Loran is caring for her but her body is breaking down and she will die. The retrospective touches on it briefly but you’d be better served reading the Reddit rewatch thread around ep 42-44 when she explains this to Kihel alongside her wish to die on earth. I beleive that ring is for Willghem and Loran is caring for her as he would a sick mother or grandmother almost. Does he love her? Yes, in the same way Harry loved and revered his queen. She cares about him almost like a child. I believe she will pass peacefully, beautiful and young in appearance, on earth as she wanted. Loran having served his duty will go back to society and Sochie will be waiting. That’s just my thoughts though

Very glad to see someone enjoy Turn A as much as I do. It's such a beautiful show, visually, musically, and thematically, and really feels special in a way thats kinda hard to describe. The slower pace might be a downside to some but I really enjoyed how the show really puts a lot effort into letting its characters shine, even if it meant slowing down the plot. I love the brighter, softer tone of the show compared to most of Tomino's earlier works, you can really see how Tomino has grown over the years. Even though it didn't end up being his last Gundam show it really nails that feel of "This is what every Gundam has been leading up to". You can kind of see how it influenced his next (and last, for real this time, he swears) Gundam show, G-Reco, which is even more bright and colourful (though the directing in that show is... a lot harder to follow than Turn A, let's just say).
I was originally pretty iffy on the Turn A's design and felt it was really silly, but as I watched the show I really fell in love with how unique it is, along with all the other MS. I love seeing Syd Mead's design documents/sketches for the Turn A and Turn X. The soundtrack is also stunning (as expected from Yoko Kanno). The 2nd ED, "Tsuki no Mayu", is genuinely breathtaking and has become one of my favourite pieces of music of all time. The way it plays throughout the epilogue is just...so beautiful.

Now that you mentioned Garzeys Wing.
I actually may have figured out what Tomino was trying to do with that Show had he’d made that series with a functional Plot!
The Main plot I figure would be focused on two Guys from Different Worlds, one from Boston Wells and One from Earth. Both would end up having their Souls bonded and shifted Over to the Other’s body. And only when one’s asleep can they Contact the other. However when both are asleep at the same time they can interact with each other and even see each other through the Veil.
It’s an interesting premise had Tomino carefully applied these ideas. But he didn’t, and it didn’t work out in the end, especially with the Feathered wing feet.

Turn A is a weird series, but it's a Tomino series, so it's to be expected. The mustache threw me off before I started watching it, but the design grew on me, I'll admit. It's very much a character-driven story than a plot driven one, as there really isn't an in-depth explanation for how all the universes coalesce into the Correct Century, but it serves its purposes well enough. It's here that we do get female characters who are well written, a protagonist who isn't overbearing with his ideals and is willing to fight for it, and a real sense of optimism for once, at least where Tomino related entries are concerned. I probably like Century Color more than the average person ought to. Favorite Easter Egg is seeing Fuunsaiki and Nether Gundam from G Gundam be considered as potential candidates of MS to develop. Glad to see you liked it a lot, it's definitely top 3 in ACs for me. It really is the end of an era in a sense...for better or for worse.

Alright, I finally finished the video (I have a 3 year old and it's a Saturday) and I'm glad you loved this show as much as I I do - I love it too. I think that meandering early in the narrative is really important; you get to care about the world the characters live in, and the characters too in, what they hope for and dream.
To add something to your retrospective - Corin Nander saw the Wing Zero, but I've seen people extrapolate on what that means. I think it's implied that Corin's hatred of "Gundams" comes from being a victim of Quatre's rampage when he was piloting the Wing Zero, which is just a cool bit of canon welding.
To paraphrase one of my favorite tweets:
Me the first time Corin shows up: Who is this clown?
Me when Corin shows up on my rewatch: Ah yes, the King has arrived.

I'm currently going through SEED! It's actually pretty good, as I feel the relationships between the characters are well explored (namely the relations between Kira and Athrun, and Kira and Flay) and the writing is good. It even has pretty solid HD remastered version which comes with a surprisingly good English audio track... Once you get over how it was recorded during the great pandemic of 2020 and that it's a dub of a show from 2002 that was remastered in 2011 which had to be re-localised due to the change in certain plot details.
So yeah! SEED is good. _So far._ I know that once Kira will pull his first "Jesus Yamato", it will be all downhill from there. And I have noticed certain flaws pop in in the good episodes too.

Turn A will always be my favourite Gundam show. Never before watching an anime have i just enjoyed my time more!
Regarding the ending. In all likelyhood Loran and Diana are not married. The Ring on her finger is from the original Will Game as well as Loran Still using honorifics and sleeping in 2 beds. The reason for him staying with her is probably loyalty.
The cane also suggest that Diana is prob gonna die in the near furture as a consequence of the repeated hibernations, after which Loran is most likely gonna go back to Sochie (though if she is gonna accept that is another matter).
But srsly how hard Sochie got shafted at the end is probably the only real flaw with the series IMO.
also shout out to one of the greatest anime Openings and endings with Turn A Turn and Tsuki No Mayu

it's not a flaw, I consider one of a few perfect possible endings for her character + her relationship to Loran throughout the show. Just because it doesn't fulfill some desire for fan service doesn't make it a flaw, it just means that you dont like it because you wanted your expectations or desires to be fulfilled a certain way.
I do like the point you make about how Dianna is likely dying SOON though, I hadn't really considered the immediacy of it. I mostly just thought she was trying to lie low for a while and cross some stuff off her earth bucket list at the same time

  • @bebopobama4686
    @bebopobama4686 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The idea that a story always has to 'move forward' is such an immense flaw in the way so many people consume media. Stuff like Turn A that focuses on being in the moment and developing an atmosphere and characterization is just as valid as any other way to tell stories.
This "always move forward" mindset is something I see everywhere in films, and tv. Nothing is allowed to just take a break to exist. It's a shame so many people have been trained to experience stories in one way.
I see criticisms like that pop up all the time in anime discussions people will say things like "this arc is taking too long" or "nothing is happening" when in reality they're just not paying attention. There's always a lot of characterization or other developments but they ignore it because they're too focused on the next big event occurring or some reveal happening. It's like missing the trees for the forest.

3:11 - I'd say that as far as UC goes, it's pretty successful at being an epilogue to Gundam. But since the only baseline for any time frame we get in the show is the Correct Century year, and a few approximations, it's entirely possible that every Gundam series takes place after UC, but before Turn A. The only real information we have on the timeframe is a line that states that the book was written around 3000 years ago and that's when UC would've taken place. But the some of the show's staff would later go on to state that this was an approximation by the characters using their own frame of reference based on the numbers in the book and at least one staff member would say that it's more accurate to state that it was 3000 years before the Correct Century timeline started and that all other timeframes are based on that period instead. It's kind of weird.
I personally think it's easier to just say this is an epilogue to UC Gundam. But you could theoretically call it an epilogue to ALL of Gundam if you go by what the staff says.
It should also be noted that the show was made in 1999 and was intended to be the end of ALL of Gundam. Since we've had many new non-UC Gundam series' since then, at some point it's likely we'll get one that exists outside of this time frame, Correct Century or not.

Speaking of the Moonlight Butterfly... The most memorable thing about it was in Z2 Saisei-hen during a 00 scenario when Celestial Being destroys the orbital satellite and you have to shoot all the debris down.
In the first game Hakai-hen the Turn A was damaged and cannot use the Moonlight Butterfly, but its been released here and its got a massive range and will help destroy the debris much faster! And the best thing? Turn A can regenerate its HP and Energy meaning the Moonlight Butterfly is spammable!
