I actually prefer this ending to the canon one. I feel like Snake and Otacon are a stronger team with a more satisfying payoff in the future games. I really like their unlikely friendship between nerd and brute, plus the NG+ reward of stealth camo is way cooler than infinite ammo. Having the badass and independent Snake grief over the loss of Meryl and doubt himself felt like massive development for the character. Meanwhile the happy ending felt a bit..."textbook" imo. Not bad but nothing unusual. Even if you do ship Snake and Meryl, MGS4 kinda ruined that so looking back i prefer this ending setting up future adventures with the two bros, rather than being teased with two characters breaking up off screen.

that, and also if you played MGSV, you'd see from Strangelove's words that some part of The Boss's spirit and wisdom gets into otacon, which is why he's able to say these moving quotes. almost like a part of her is reincarnated into him.

Just finished this game for the first time. I got the canon ending and decided to look up this ending before moving on to MGS2. I'm angry how much better this is. But it's Otacon who saves him and makes him a weapon of hope to save the true heroes. He deserved better in the end.
“The important thing is that you choose life, and then live!” I love this line so much. In this ending both Snake and Otacon lose the women they love, the Colonel lost his daughter and Naomi lost the closest person she had to family, but it still ends on high note for these characters. It’s a very beautiful and inspiring ending in my opinion.
The fact they both knew the reference makes me laugh thinking Snake has watched the movie as well. Just the image of that makes me love this reference.
Okay but like, Otacon asks Snake to live at the end of this game, then at the end of MGS4, Snake makes that choice and Otacon goes with him. This is the better ending. Though Meryl having to die to get it kinda sucks.

@@shadowstriker84 I thought it was in both endings since Meryl doesn't die until the end of that ending and the conversation takes place earlier in the game, when she isn't dead
What the hell did no one notice Campbell mention that he slept with his brothers wife. His family may be more messed up than big boss and the snake triplets and genome soldiers
When I got this ending the first time I cried so many manly tears and I don't know why, but I played the game over again to save her life. I guess in a way I felt guilty and needed to right the wrong I felt responsible for.
I'm not a big fan of Meryl but I still felt guilty letting her die like that. Roy Campbell acknowledging this at the end of the game doesn't help either.
Although this ending is not canon, it has a lot of information in it which is important to know and is known by characters in the sequels. Most importantly that Meryl is Campbells daughter. And ofc Snake gets the stealth camouflage he has in the opening of MGS2. As many state here, this is by far the superiour ending. It really gives close to Snakes and Otacons arcs and at the end, Snake is looking for a new purpose. And he finally changes into the hero from MGS2 and 4 at the end because he failed Meryl and wants to become a better man now. Really a great ending and far better than the romance ending with Meryl.
Well said. Off topic but if they do end up doing a full blown remake I pray to God it doesn't get woke and use pc bs in it. I couldn't bare to see a huge part of my childhood be ruined. They already ruined the last of us with thar part 2 debacle. The only thing worst would be David hayter coming out as a woke far lefty. That would honestly destroy me in so many ways. David hayter is the reason I'm here today happy. He has touched so many peoples hearts with his performance and will sadly never know.
@avaforlife4141 of course, seeing American Imperialism in a critical light and the MGS games some scenes and actions reminiscent to Homosexuality, being too obvious about it. And, why are you whining about "wokeness"? That's the most boring thing to whine about
He mentioned there, when Raiden asked why would *anyone* do a mission more than once. It was something like "My best friend once said to me, 'fighting is the only thing I was good at, but at least I always fought for what I believed in'." The point was that he didn't want the world to have metal gears. Instead of fighting because he's ordered to, or to feel alive/survive, he started fighting so that the world can have better peace, away from war and metal gears, and eventually the Patriots. New path, even if certain things are similar.
He did take a new path, in a sense. In MGS1, Snake was disillusioned with his purpose as a soldier and clearly fed up with taking orders. He went in a different direction after the Shadow Moses incident, creating his own new organization with Otacon and dedicating himself to destroying Metal Gear and the Patriots rather than just fighting out of some misguided sense of patriotism or honor.
This ending is hilarious. It's so "bromancy" it kills me. It feels like something I should be hearing at the end of a gay soap opera. Right down to the piano playing softly with the dialog. It's also legitimately funny when Snake remembers Otacons real name. And the way Snake totally bums Otacons stealth camo off him is hilarious. He's like "oh OK well if you're not gonna hide I could totally take that camo off you."
I used to always get this ending as a child with my brother every time, not knowing you could save her. Years later we found out the other ending, and I still prefer this one. Its so much more sad and realistic and sets up the second game why snake ends up working with otacon. What a masterpiece.

Ngl I felt happier with this ending than I did Meryl's. Maybe it's because Snake and Otacon have more in common than Snake and Meryl or that we're in constant contact with Otacon all throughout the game.
So Hal and Dave went to visit Jupiter, caught some robbers, saved the day, and had some brewskis together, and became both Lewis and Clark, a great bunch of guys. 🍻
This is such a positive ending, despite it being the 'bad' ending. I love the 2001: A Space Odyssey bit that they joke about. Kinda fourth wall breaking, took me years before I understood the joke too.
To me, this is the canonical ending. Not only does it reveal Snake to be flawed and more human in his mistake for giving into the torture, it better ties in with MGS2. Yes, she’s alive in MGS4, be we all know that game was never meant to have been made. Both Otacon and Snake have lost someone by the end of MGS and find each other’s friendship for comfort, eventually leading to their working partnership in MGS2; it just fits so much better imo
This ending also apparently abridges the conversation at the end between Mr. X and the President. In the good ending he gives a lot more details regarding the President's identity.
Some people say that this ending makes more sense with mgs2 But honestly, is not like Snake would forget what Otacon did for him after all, even on the Merly ending, Snake was worried about him and asked to someone pick him up. And i believe that they can meet again off screen and team up on MGS2
As a kid playing metal gear solid 1 back in 1998 I always thought this was the only ending since I always gave up in the torture room because it was to hard never knew there was a "good Meryl" ending till much later
It's interesting they tied an ending to giving up on ocelot's torture. Also this video made me realize I could have shot at liquid snake in 1st person view. I only shot at him in 3rd person xD
It’s wild how it took 3 more games after this one to circle all the way back around to effectively the same ending, in terms of snake’s development. For him to put aside the gun and live.

try beating the torture room on extreme you have to be a real man to do it on your own
And if you press select with ocelot instead of repetaly pressing circle
Honestly I prefer this ending better because this is how Otacon & Snake became best friends. 😌
No way would I let Meryl die, but man this reveals so much character development. I've never heard Snake laugh.
Didn't he laugh at one point in one of the conversations with Meryl? I don't know...
@@Ami-km8sd I think that was from the other ending

Mayor Campbell got away with this like it was nothing
The idea that Snake gave into torture is bullshit, but everything else in this version improves his character.
When I got this ending the first time I cried so many manly tears and I don't know why, but I played the game over again to save her life. I guess in a way I felt guilty and needed to right the wrong I felt responsible for.
I'm not a big fan of Meryl but I still felt guilty letting her die like that. Roy Campbell acknowledging this at the end of the game doesn't help either.
why not?
@@avaforlife4141 what do you mean? MGS is pretty woke frfr

@avaforlife4141 of course, seeing American Imperialism in a critical light and the MGS games some scenes and actions reminiscent to Homosexuality, being too obvious about it.

Snake: i’ll find a new path
2 years later snake does some of the same shit he just did
Snake: so much for a new path
"I think it's time for me to find a new path" - seasoned metal gear destroyer who will spend the rest of his life destroying metal gears
Solid Snake and Otacon can be even gayer than Big Boss and Ocelot
lmao
This is the superior ending, Otocon and (Dave) have great chemistry.
Hal* lol
I like this ending because of how There's A Space Odyssey reference and how snake and Hal conversate
The "Hal and Dave" joke was a refrence to 2001: A Space Odyssey. That's why Snake suggests they take a trip to Juptiter.
What no friend does to mf
I got this ending and was watching the ending cutscene but my game crashed in the middle so I'm watching it here.
Glad I'm not the only one. My last save was at the beginning of the Metal Gear boss battle, and I was not in the mood to do that again.
7 years in the future coming in to say similar situation, I accidentally hit exit when I died in the escape
Otacon Ending can be canon, Meryl ate Fake Death Pill

The only thing I don't like about this ending is that it implies Snake wasn't tough enough to survive the torture.
That depends on the player.

it was a big big deal and revolutionary is the word.....
It’s nice of Kojima to not berate the player for taking the easy way out during the torture sequence, but instead reward them with an equally meaningful ending.

Love the 2001 A Space Odyssey reference with Snake and Otacon.
Jennifer Hale's performance is just magnificent.
After playing MGSV it makes you grateful that Hal didn’t end up like his dad
I really wish the game would give you 2 balanced options. Save Meryl is more difficult, so I thought it was the true ending.
So Hal and Dave went to visit Jupiter, caught some robbers, saved the day, and had some brewskis together, and became both Lewis and Clark, a great bunch of guys. 🍻
Now that sounds like an ending.
This is such a positive ending, despite it being the 'bad' ending. I love the 2001: A Space Odyssey bit that they joke about. Kinda fourth wall breaking, took me years before I understood the joke too.
there are just so many life lessons in the bad ending... what happened to gaming?
"Meryl can't forgive anyone anymore..." Otacon... you dense-
To me, this is the canonical ending.

I always preferred this ending, because this way Snake and Otacon share the same pain and overcome it together.
Some people say that this ending makes more sense with mgs2
But honestly, is not like Snake would forget what Otacon did for him after all, even on the Merly ending, Snake was worried about him and asked to someone pick him up.
