What happens if you kill everybody on your way to THE SORROW?

- For a long time I have wondered what would actually happen if you killed virtually anything you can lay your eyes on in MGS3, all the way up until you face The Sorrow. How long can the fight possibly take? I know that if you play the game non-lethal and beat the prior bosses via stamina without killing anyone, you only get to see those 4 bosses and the fight ends fairly quickly.
How long can the fight realistically go on for? I intend to play through the game on NG+ Normal and use the patriot alongside any other weapon I can find to wreak havoc and misery.
If you are morbidly curious like me, feel free to join me as I rampage through the swamps and jungles of Snake Eater in an attempt to find out how long The Sorrow fight could possibly last whilst slaughtering every living being and turning Naked Snake into an Apex predator along the way.

Fun fact, if you called Sigint after you encounter flame soldiers, he will comment that the people there are pissed you killed so many of their comrades. If you’re stealthing it though, he comments that Volgin is the one who is big mad that you unalived three of his Cobra Units.

I remember this question, yea the limitation has been found ages ago. (btw I do love this video) if you stealth the whole game but kill every guard that is hand placed in each level you'll have the max amount of guards during the sorrow fight. the limitation is reinforcement guards don't actually have any presence technically so killing them, while adding to the end game counter, doesn't actually register as a "named guard killed" so they won't appear in the sorrow fight.
So it's like the dog tags in MGS2, you only get them from the patrol guards

I just did this yesterday. I spend all my time tranqing enemies, but I did an "Everyone Must Die" playthrough, mainly to see the Sorrow bit. I turned Snake into the Predator with the Stealth camo, Infinity Face Camo, and Patriot. Also, if you shoot the ropes that are holding up the bridge in Dolinovodno right beside the soldiers crossing, they'll fall into the water below.

@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged You can walk down the middle of the bridge and you'll be fine, just don't full sprint.
People falling or blowing from barrels and such or trip after being tranqed don't count as kills honey. It follows very Bronze Age Batman logic.

You're probably right about how the fight's length is capped.
In fact, I may even go as far as to say you probably hit the limit well before you actually reached The Sorrow.
And the difference of a second is most definitely within a margin of error. If you had the patience to do the fight multiple times, you'd probably find that the length varies from attempt to attempt.
Yep that is generally what it seemed like to me. 1st playthrough was 300+ kills. The backup was 500+ at the very most. So there definitely is some sort of cap. I do wonder if its the same for Snake Eater/Substance. I will eventually one day, dust off the PS2 to take a look. Thanks for watching !
My guess (based on the fact that you could still see old and new kills on both the original and backup save) is that it probably only counts 4 or 5 kills per area, or maybe even 10-20 kills per enemy type and/or type of kill.

@@Dorraj my guess was similar. I assume at some point the "backup" character that come during the alert phase don't count toward the fight. The question is, is that only after the kill threshold has been hit or do none of the fodder count.

From my own experience, it's a very long fight. It's actually what taught me that I should play stealth games like stealth games. Kojima changed how I play games.
Im doing a stealth walkthrough rn to get the stealth camo but damn it's boring, going rampage in this game is The Way
I remember being stuck on the sorrow bossfight because my first play through in the game I didn’t use fake death pill at all so I didn’t know about revival pill. I can’t tell you how many times I walked through the mangrove just to die at his buddy and hit continue 😢. But I will always remember that boss fight above any other lol
I hate to admit it, but I had the exact same experience.
I remember watching my dad while we racked our brains to the point of us going online with dial up internet hopping for an answer. After learning the what to do we felt dumb and angry hahaha We were also the two idiots that kept turning off the PS2 during arsenal Gear when the codec said to do it.
@@DavidSRJR That sounds very stupid to me. I think i only got trolled ONCE at the sorrow by hitting continue, after that i tried every button and alas, L2 and the revival pill just seemed to make sense, even as a 12yr old back then.

Good way to make this long segment easier is to get as many nutshots as possible throughout the game to kill the enemies. Slows them down a bit since they clutch their bleeding nuts as they walk up to you instead of just trying to grab you

There's an interesting mechanic I learned recently watching SirRando's no camo run, if you knock out the guards outside Sokolov's room in Grozyj Grad they send new sentries to take their place. I don't know how many times they do this before something else happens (if at all, might go on forever XD) but it would've funny if you wiped out an entire group of sentries until they just gave up

Actually did this on the switch version on last playthrough, legit, it felt like that damn river was rolling for at least 20 minutes, possibly close to 30.

I killed everyone I saw in my first playthrough and thought the sorrow boss fight was bugged.
As a kid, this is the version of the fight I always encountered.

In my most recent playthrough of MGS3 i had a gaurd that i killed land on an electric fence and everytime it would shock him and throw his body it kept landing back on the fence over and over, i never had that happen before lol

Nice playthrough, and I agree, 19 years old and its probably still on my top ten games . I like to blow up food, and once they say "So hungry", I throw poisoned dart frogs i killed before. Nice way to Stamina kill the Fear . Also, remember Single Action Army bullets can bounce when you face shield guards, just aim at Wall or ground nearest them.

I feel like the length is just tied to the different types of enemies you kill and how you did it, one game I completely with my only kills being throat cuts up to that point and I got like 4 soldiers with throats cut between each boss spirit
Reminder that deaths from indirect method, like explosive barrels, wont count towards the kill count.
It has forever disappointed me that, even if you kill nobody, you still can't duck down in the river and swim during the Sorrow fight because a ghost grabs your foot. Like, wouldn't that have been a great new game bonus thing? If you got that far and didn't kill anyone, I think you earned skipping the boring walk forwards though the river.
If you want to challenge the hardest stealth section in that game, try not removing the tracking beacon before the Sorrow fight. The Ocelot unit is patrolling the river where Snake wakes up, it's extremely difficult to leave the area without an alert.
I'd call that playthrough "Beating MGS3 the way Kojima intended".

There's definitely a limit on the ps2 version of how many people show up in the river.
I took out absolutely everybody (300+) including Ocelots and Pilots, but there were no Ocelots or Pilots during the sorrow sequence.
It remembered all the burning scientists and interior guards though.
I liked this video purely for the beauty of the ladder scene edit

I've done that with CQC interrogations and knife in all soldiers on my way to the sorrow on my first playthrough lol... that took FOREVER.
I don't think the game counts explosive barrel kills count as kills

my buddy had this game. he played it like a 12 y/o would. thenhe watched me play it stealthy. he ruined the experience for me by throwing a fit about how easy the dream sequence was and how short ov a walk it was for me... fuck you Drew!

The Healing Radio only works once from what I know esp during the PS2 Snake Eater and Subsistence.
as MGS 3 Veteran I've been played almost 33 times since PS2 era until Master Collection PC ,
its really annoying if you kill everyone in MGS3 such as killing a Soldier , it will be making your walk pretty slowly when you fight sorrow,

u can skip the fight by drowning urself then using the revive pill u just don't get the sorrow camo at the end of the fight
The trickiest boss fight.
I remember being so mad that I "die" at the end. after HOURS of trying, I accidentally dropped my controller, then the items menu popped. Got curious, then was able to revive.

The first time I played MGS3 with a friend and he killed almost every thing. It took us like 10-15 min to go through the sorrow, there was even an helicopter 😂

If i had to guess (and no, i will not check for it) your pathing on the second attempt was probably more straight forward than the first one. Thus the one second time safe at the end.
But i would have loved to know what the kill count on your second attempt was tho

MGS3 was on a level of its own with ita development, none of the MGS games have ever been able to touch this type if fun since... dont get me wrong i still love the others; this one is just the best imho

You get my first playthrough. I had to restart. My save didn't have full life, or enough life aids.
I never did figure out if the infinitely respawning enemies counted multiple times.
i love MGS3 out of boredom i did this very thing but i never kept track of the numbers and so on. fun fact: if you throw a flash grenade in the cave every animal that isnt around a corner will instantly die
