Two completely different puzzle game styles. You might as well say Crash Bandicoot and Mario are the same because they are platformers.
This is what I have wanting for years, not just sonic, but take an old game and just keep the exact same formula, but give us more of what we love!! Imagine if they do this with something like super Mario 64???

Just bought it yesterday and loving it.. when the music to the Green Hill Zone 1 starts i was smiling alone like a fool remembering the day i got my Mega Drive as my first ever console.. Thank you Dad for making my childhood an awesome one 😊😊
Another cool feature, if you had two controllers the second person can play as Tails, this is very useful against bosses. The screen centers in Sonic, but Tails respawn all the time if he dies, and also, if he gets too far from Sonic, he automatically appears near him. It also has multiplayer, and its kinda nice.
Not me. I like to base my own opinion when I buy a game. I've been let down by reviewers before when it's a great game to me but in a review they say it's meh (Agents of Mayhem for instance)
Dude, there have been a bunch of online Puyo Puyos. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine is just Puyo Puyo 1 with no offsetting and all, it would be trash for online, you'd get insta-killed every time the opponent reaches a 6 chain before you and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it. The only competitive Puyo Puyo modes are Tsu rules and Swap.
7:10 it's Dr. Robotinik's Mean Bean Machine and probably my favorite part of that level. I was so happy to see that they gave that game a nod and included it as a boss.

I absolutely love it. The controls are on point. The graphics style is so satisfying and the music is amazing. It's not to hard but not too easy either. Level designs feel well planned. So happy

Sonic mania is such and amazing game and I just can't stop playing it. I am glad I got it on the switch as I seem to be taking sonic with me everywhere I go lol 😅
I love the game so far (I got the Switch version). started with Knuckles and just explored. as many other reviewers stated exploring the levels are amazing and not going right all the time works wonders here. by far enjoyable

When you called the Puyo Puyo easter egg the word "Tetris" it seriously broke my heart cause this was a call back to doctor eggman's mean bean machine from the genesis, there was actually allot of thought to this.
Ya, you kinda forgot to mention the game doesn't respect your time by incorporating an archaic save system that sends you back to the beginning of the entire level upon a game over. Sure you could argue that previous iterations were far less forgiving, however, I work 55 hrs a week don't really have time to start a 10-15 minute level all over again because I messed up due to a trial and error boss design. In fact, everytime I game over, I just play a different game immediately to keep my dopamine levels from dropping to the point of game deletion.
I played sonic a little as a kid. This game though had me smiling like a goofball the whole way through. I love the remixed old stages, I love the new stages that are still callbacks to older ones, i thought it was amazing that I had to play Mean Bean Machine as a boss fight. And after all of that, I saw the intro cutscene and even that was perfect. Definately recommend this game.
As i said before there is a fan made remake of SOR with loads of levels and characters and amazing music and it is awesome but best of all its a free download.
I remember being 5 years old and playing this game at my friends house back in 1994 and thinking how much cooler his parents were than mine for buying him a Sega.. Needless to say, I'm quite satisfied with my 20 dollar purchase! Btw, thanks for the advice about double tapping jump for a speed boost
Actually Sonic Mania is a really fitting name considering it is basicly fans of the franchise who made the game with passion and love rather than a strict timeline and money. Mania means being emotionally invested or passionated about something that it is on the edge of obsession. A truly fitting name if you ask me, considering those who made it, and fans alike all around the world have cried out for a comeback like this for almost 20 years now. While I love the old Sonic 2D games.. Sonic Mania is my new #1 favorite! :D

I've beaten this game four times now. Once as each character(s) Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic&Tails. Love it. I understand you're points and this is a rather superb review but I cannot let it slide that you to referred to Puyo Puyo / Mean Bean Machine as "basically Tetris".
I would love to see taxman/Christian Whitehead and his team tackle other projects like this for sega's other game series, How about ristar 2? Shinobi 4? Vectorman 3? Golden axe 4? The possibilities are endless

After seeing the film a couple days back I've been watching clips and walkthroughs for the game. This is the best one I've seen, may lick it up today before I go back to school! I only ever played Sonic All Star Racing and Sonic Rush Adventure (the one with the 4 boats I think) and I loved them, he film really rekindled my mini love for the franchise despite not being the biggest Sonic fan out there

I never got into Sonic. Was a Nintendo owner. I tried it on Xbox360, meh. Got it on DS, naw.. not sure why I bought this. BUT WOW. You're right, little tiny changes in jumps and controls made this hit a sweet spot for me. I really like it!

I feel such joy and giddiness and hype over every main entry, and even when they don't even come close to the hype, I still feel just as happy and hyped No other game has made me feel like this Until Sonic Mania Except, even as a Pokemon fan, I have to admit that Mania lived up to all the hype
My first sonic game was Sonic Unleashed and for me it locked in my head "This is how a sonic game is supposed to be." SO whenever I play a 2d sonic game, it just doesnt feel like sonic. But other people seem to think otherwise :/ Sonic Unleashed is my fav sonic game, even to this day
HyperMute Maybe you were too young. I was born in 99 and I think I got lucky because when I got a ps2 I got sonic heroes and sonic mega collection plus and they were both sooo cool. The cool thing about the old sonic games is how free it is and how fun it is to explore the map. I remember using a cheat code called debug mode in sonic 3 and knuckles and how you could get hyper sonic and stuff and wow it was cool. I played it for so long, and some of the other crazy sonic games too. I think you would have loved it if you played the originals.

Everybody is going coco crazy over this drop dash thingy. I like super peelout way more. It's a much better speed start than spin dash and you can just curl into a ball the moment you take off without losing any speed.
Used to love Sonic games. Never played the 3D ones so I never experienced that trauma. Was worried that this game was just going to be a reskin of old games, but after watching this, I'm more convinced to get it for my Switch!

Sega didn't "make" this, they had other Devs do it. If they resorted to just making sequels to this it would get stale, fast. This game relies too heavily on nostalgia to spread it any thinner than it already is. Sonic died 20 years ago, a new game that is good, rooted in nostalgia. doesn't change that.
Nah, I don't want sonic to demote itself to 20$ 2D only platformers, it would get stale, and the lack of any story(meaning cutscenes and voice acting) would be a bummer and the lack of awsome lyrical songs would suck too, I love the hard rocking attitude of adventure and modern sonic I don't want that to ever go away
Back in the early 90s, I hadn't had a game console since the Atari 2600. So when I went to buy one they had the NES and Genesis and it was the speed of Sonic vs the speed of Mario that helped me decide. and I've been a Sonic fan ever since. Glad to see they are getting it right. I've got it on my Steam wishlist already

There's never been and never will be any proof that Denuvo or DRMs in general do any harm to PCs because they don't. The people claiming that and bombarding negative reviews for games containing DRMs are just pissed off pirates that want the game for free or are concerned that it will hamper modding.
Hazy Grove Lol OK even everyone I know pre-ordered the game. Why would pirates be upset? DRM has been there for years, they wouldn't be upset. It's just apart of the pirates life. Your computer isn't the majority. It affected others.
Because they have to wait an extra week or two before it's cracked instead of being able to pirate it immediately. I've searched the internet over and there is absolutely no concrete proof whatsoever that it harms anything. I have however found plenty of proof that every problem that is associated with Denuvo is false. Something screws up in someones PC and of course they're going to immediately put the blame on something they don't like instead of actually getting to the bottom of the issue.
My Dad bought me Sonic 1 for my Genesis in 1999, it was the first game i've played, and one of the best ones! Sonic Mania was the first game in my life that i've felt the need to pre order... and it didnt disapoint me... great job SEGA!

I finished this game 16 times and still find enjoyment in it, I never get bored from replaying it, and it's easily my most favorite game of all time.

Already beaten it with all the Chaos Emeralds, all Blue Sphere Bonus stages completed and everything unlocked. Totally worth it.

As i said before there is a fan made remake of SOR with loads of levels and characters and amazing music and it is awesome but best of all its a free download.
....all the genesis classics would benefit from a remake like this - but then again Sonic is the #1 genesis franchise.

I remember being 5 years old and playing this game at my friends house back in 1994 and thinking how much cooler his parents were than mine for buying him a Sega.. Needless to say, I'm quite satisfied with my 20 dollar purchase! Btw, thanks for the advice about double tapping jump for a speed boost

Actually Sonic Mania is a really fitting name considering it is basicly fans of the franchise who made the game with passion and love rather than a strict timeline and money. Mania means being emotionally invested or passionated about something that it is on the edge of obsession. A truly fitting name if you ask me, considering those who made it, and fans alike all around the world have cried out for a comeback like this for almost 20 years now. While I love the old Sonic 2D games.. Sonic Mania is my new #1 favorite! :D

In my not so humble opinion.
I also think the original Sonic isn't that great. It set the rest up, but feels so undercooked versus the others. Sonic 2 really stepped shit up! And totally agree re: S3&K, it's the complete Sonic.

After seeing the film a couple days back I've been watching clips and walkthroughs for the game. This is the best one I've seen, may lick it up today before I go back to school! I only ever played Sonic All Star Racing and Sonic Rush Adventure (the one with the 4 boats I think) and I loved them, he film really rekindled my mini love for the franchise despite not being the biggest Sonic fan out there
the boss is not tetris but puyo puyo and it is a reference to an old sonic game "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine" which took the puyo puyo gameplay. A very clever reference in my opinion

My first sonic game was Sonic Unleashed and for me it locked in my head "This is how a sonic game is supposed to be." SO whenever I play a 2d sonic game, it just doesnt feel like sonic. But other people seem to think otherwise :/ Sonic Unleashed is my fav sonic game, even to this day

HyperMute Maybe you were too young. I was born in 99 and I think I got lucky because when I got a ps2 I got sonic heroes and sonic mega collection plus and they were both sooo cool. The cool thing about the old sonic games is how free it is and how fun it is to explore the map. I remember using a cheat code called debug mode in sonic 3 and knuckles and how you could get hyper sonic and stuff and wow it was cool. I played it for so long, and some of the other crazy sonic games too. I think you would have loved it if you played the originals.

Everybody is going coco crazy over this drop dash thingy. I like super peelout way more. It's a much better speed start than spin dash and you can just curl into a ball the moment you take off without losing any speed.

Used to love Sonic games. Never played the 3D ones so I never experienced that trauma. Was worried that this game was just going to be a reskin of old games, but after watching this, I'm more convinced to get it for my Switch!

Sega didn't "make" this, they had other Devs do it. If they resorted to just making sequels to this it would get stale, fast. This game relies too heavily on nostalgia to spread it any thinner than it already is. Sonic died 20 years ago, a new game that is good, rooted in nostalgia. doesn't change that.

Nah, I don't want sonic to demote itself to 20$ 2D only platformers, it would get stale, and the lack of any story(meaning cutscenes and voice acting) would be a bummer and the lack of awsome lyrical songs would suck too, I love the hard rocking attitude of adventure and modern sonic I don't want that to ever go away
Back in the early 90s, I hadn't had a game console since the Atari 2600. So when I went to buy one they had the NES and Genesis and it was the speed of Sonic vs the speed of Mario that helped me decide. and I've been a Sonic fan ever since. Glad to see they are getting it right. I've got it on my Steam wishlist already

One of the best sonic games. I personally love that they included bits of all the old sonic games (including spinball) which I LOVE.

There's never been and never will be any proof that Denuvo or DRMs in general do any harm to PCs because they don't. The people claiming that and bombarding negative reviews for games containing DRMs are just pissed off pirates that want the game for free or are concerned that it will hamper modding.

Your computer isn't the majority. It affected others.
Because they have to wait an extra week or two before it's cracked instead of being able to pirate it immediately. I've searched the internet over and there is absolutely no concrete proof whatsoever that it harms anything. I have however found plenty of proof that every problem that is associated with Denuvo is false. Something screws up in someones PC and of course they're going to immediately put the blame on something they don't like instead of actually getting to the bottom of the issue.

My Dad bought me Sonic 1 for my Genesis in 1999, it was the first game i've played, and one of the best ones! Sonic Mania was the first game in my life that i've felt the need to pre order... and it didnt disapoint me... great job SEGA!
