- One of my favorite aspects of Sonic Mania is how each character has their own unique ability, giving each of them their own play style. I thought it would be fun to go through all of the playable characters, and rank them from worst to best!

If you get good at Ray he is really fun to use (in open levels) he's basically the cape powerup from Mario World

This is how I kill the enemies with the peel out:
*peel out + rolling spin attack= spin dash but much faster.
I think ray is actually, probably one of the best characters to play as, and easily better than mighty. You even missed that ray can kill enemies in midair after a glide (you roll into a ball when you let go of glide), which can be very useful and I'd say it makes him a lot more versatile than tails or knuckles.
I love all of these characters and how unique they are, so here's my thoughts on them:
-I love how Sonic is so versatile and can build up speed easier than the other characters can, and I especially enjoy being able to use all of the abilities at a moment's notice (more or less). One thing I noticed you overlooked about the Peel-Out is how it can virtually replace the Spin Dash if you just press down when you release it, and one thing they could've done better with Sonic is allowing him to use the Drop Dash alongside shield abilities like how it works with the Insta Shield.
-Tails is personally one of my least favorites because of his flight. I like how useful it is, but the dealbreaker for me is how slow it goes in literally any direction. For going up I can understand, and when used skillfully you don't have to worry about it's horizontal speed, but I feel like it could really benefit from something like a flight cancel, like what it has in Sonic 3 AIR. I do also agree that Tails could benefit from a set of paths catered to his abilities like what Knuckles has.
-Knuckles's glide has a similar problem to Tails's flight imo; no matter how fast you're going, it always starts off slow when initiated. I'd probably enjoy this ability a lot more if your existing momentum carried over into the glide, like it does in the fangame Sonic Robo Blast 2.
-While I enjoy Mighty's Hammer Drop and added defense, I am a little disappointed he doesn't have his wall-jump ability. It would've been pretty easy to implement: Just press Jump in midair while hugging a wall. What I'm even more disappointed in, however, is how they practically wasted his floor-breaking ability instead of giving him a set of paths catered to his abilities like what Knuckles has.
-All I can really say about Ray is that the most optimal way to use *his* glide is in tandem with the Spin Dash. You can use that to gain immediate speed, which carries over into the glide and makes it one of the most powerful and satisfying abilities in the game!
P.S. Petition to give every character their own moves with the same button inputs as the Peel-Out? Anyone? Guess I'm alone in this, then.

Ray and mighty weren’t originally in the game, that’s why they don’t have dedicated paths in the maps, they where both DLC released I think a year after the game dropped, I agree that perhaps they should have made new levels to really show off the abilities a little better
@@cell7514 I'm aware their late addition is why they don't have their own paths, but it's still disappointing either way. Besides, Knuckles also has less unique paths than he did in 3K and that's also disappointing.
Knuckles having less unique paths makes sense storywise. There are only two levels that take place on, I repeat, *on* Angel Island. That place is full of secret paths only he’s aware of. All the other Knux exclusive routes (that aren’t story based) in Mania feel forced just because he’s Knuckles.
@@EWOODJ from a story standpoint, yeah I can see that. From a gameplay standpoint, I still feel like it would've made Knuckles and *especially* Mighty more fun if they had more character-specific paths.
Not only is the peelout faster than a spindash, but I'm pretty sure it's classified as running, meaning it's a LOT easier to keep momentum and you keep control of Sonic.

If you do a super peel out and keep holding up, then you hold down and release up, then you will get the best speed with rolling to attack enemies in your way
I personally like ray, and I use him to do a short glide up then let go to put him in a ball and roll. The way he rolls up after he glides is great for exploration and it still kills enemies the same. I actually rarely get hot when I glide as ray and I’ve gotten good a using the glide in smaller spaces to build speed faster. It just takes a little skill to get better with him. Mighty’s drop can also be used on slopes to get you going full speed immediately, which is very useful.
if tails could cancel his flight he would be way more fun

Peel out with turning into a ball instantly is just a better spin dash honestly
With Tails, you can try a challenge where you can’t use his flight unless absolutely needed. It makes a fun challenge!
By putting in the code 9001 in the level select you get the drop-dash, insta-shield, and Peel-out
Ray was the original design for tails i think. *i heard that in a yt vid once* and also once you get good at using him he is really fun In open levels.

Mighty should be ranked number 3 because it makes the game easier, for example if you accidently fall into spikes, you won't lose any rings
I remember on Titan Monarch Zone, there is a part where Ray can save a lot of time if used properly, where I think it is best to use the glide where the other 2 character’s abilities wouldn’t apply.

Honestly, with characters in general and not abilities. I’m just so happy and thankful mighty got another chance in the spotlight, because he’s way to underused.
Ray is really fun and easy to use once you know how to control him and he can skip many parts of level once you get speed. Although this is my opinion and Ray is my favorite character
1:57 Same! When I first played Mania Plus, I thought you had to press up and down since he IS swooping up and down (So why did they make it left and right???). I would rage a lot too when Ray's glide "wasn't working properly". I felt really dumb when I found out that you had press left and right instead of up and down.

I am a disliker for putting ray at the lowest, i mean if you have a good enough reaction skill, you can just stop the glide and immediately turn into a ball by jumping.
With the spin dash or drop dash, after a period of time you begin to lose that speed that you initially had. But with the peelout, you can remain at top speed until you have to roll or jump. And that, in my opinion, makes going through a level as fast as you can so much smoother to play, and when you’re trying to speed through a level with the lowest time possible, that extra time and speed the peelout saves for you adds up. Plus, the peelout just looks cool
Fun fact: if you go to the level select and enter the code "09, 00, 00, 01" and then you play a level as sonic, you will have the insta shield, the super peel out and the drop dash

Ray became a lot more fun for me once I unlocked Super Ray. All he needed was invincibility!
The only complaint about ray the flying squirrel is ironically that he looks more like a monkey than a squirrel

ray is the best character to play as imo. The flight is way more fun to use than any other ability you can use it as a kind of little double jump to reach higher areas making bosses easier and its so satisfying to be blazing through levels then curling into a ball and bouncing off enemies
I'm gonna be honest i dont like getting the elemental shields as sonic cuz it replaces the pre-existing ability he had, like the dropdash or insta shield. Well only the bubble shield atleast, Fire shields Flame dash is fun and the Double Jump of the electric shield is useful, the bubble bounce breaks my momentum and is only worth using in Water Levels.
It makes sonic go higher than the double jump and the fire dash is just the homing attack
@@efejaymabs4200 Nah, The Bubble Shield only gives Sonic like, 1 Block unit of Height, Plus the Bubble Shield needs a Platform to Land on and is more limited to movement, Electric Shield gives Sonic more Movement in the air that the Bubble Shield does

I like all of them tbh but my two fav are sonic and ray. Ray is so fun and the gliding problems can be solved with super form and he can fly so fast. Sonic is very versatile and the og. I like tails and knuckles too cuz they are useful like tails can fly anywhere and knuckles can climb and glide but there problems is that the flying and gliding are slow and knuckles gliding is also slow. Mighty is good but he just has one ability that's not the best and most useful. But overall I like them
Sonic is the best in my opinion because he has the best ground mobility which is basically the name of the game for Sonic the hedgehog.
Tails is good for exploration to find big rings (but mostly just to skip parts of levels like cpz act 1 water section).
Knuckles is also good for exploration but is the best for a unique playthrough since he has a bunch of unique paths and he has his own unique boss.
Mighty is the character used to somewhat prevent what I and many others call "Random Sonic Bullshit".
Ray is the character if you want to be cape feather mario but full-time.
i have an addiction to playing as sonic, i cant live without the drop dash

Honestly, Ray is just a better tails and knuckles. His flying is much faster and the fact that it doesnt just kill all momentum (unlike knuckles glide) makes him leagues more fun to play as for me.

I completely disagree with this, Tails being "boring and skipping the level" is literally part of the whole point of the game. He actually navigates around the level easier due to this, so that's not even true. You also didn't mention his smaller hitbox.

The people that say “why sega dosen’t do multiple characters?” Its because most of the games that had multiple characters fans said “this character is horrible”between 2006-2008 fans always said that so it’s the fandom fault and not sega and also sonic 06 is bad but the rest are ok
Sega (Sonic Team) implemented them in crappy ways thus ending up feeling crappy to play. And instead of improving their gameplay, devs removed them from playable roles altogether.
But to be fair, “fans” overexaggerated how “bad they play” because they couldn’t handle it.
But at the end of the day, it just ended being “enjoy our crappy designed playstyles or get nothing” Which isn’t fair.

In my opinion, Knuckles is number one because his glide can be more fast than Sonic in open Areas, and Sonic is the second, this is my opinion
