@agamingchannelolXD1283 Way to miss the point! Being tied to a subscription is horrendous. They already tried that with Dream Team and look how that turned out. It for some reason doesn't scale properly on my phone despite the fact that my phone is modern. I'm on a Samsung Note 20, so I do not see why it even has that issue.
Oh yeah. I completely forgot about Sonic Mania getting a mobile port. I’m gonna be honest, as well made and polished of a game Mania is, I… haven’t played it since the Plus update released a few years back. I guess I never really had much of an incentive to go back and play it after initially beating the game. Regardless, it’s a shame to see the mobile port of this game is poorly implemented and optimized for iOS and Android devices.
Especially considering the game was literally built on the same engine that was used for the mobile versions of the other classic games. A mobile version should have been an easy win. Instead, we get a sub-par port that requires a subscription to play. The gaming industry keeps finding new ways to take what should be an exciting announcement and make it depressing.
Man I played sonic mania on my old pixel 3a on a SWITCH EMULATOR that hit a locked 60 fps. If a native port isnt as optimized as an emulator that's just dumb
@@DanialDEcool ??? tf are you talking about? Yes, mania wasn't originally a mobile game, but they ported it to mobile meaning the code is running on native hardware, not through a translation layer like emulators are. Sonic 1, 2, and CD aren't mobile games either, and they play perfectly fine if we go by your logic
@@DanialDEcool If you have the source code, you can recompile it for any platform you care to. Easier said than done, but an optimized native port is possible. How did they fuck up a mobile port of MANIA?! Of all games?! I was considering playing this just for the hell of it, but now, Mania mobile can get fucked
I’m gonna be honest this just seems like sonic fans yelling at the sky as usual. It’s a fine way to play mania, especially for people who conveniently have a Netflix account who don’t want to pay for the game by itself.
It’s because they’re complaining about weaker devices. This game isn’t even supposed to be used on a phone. Origins literally had the same issue. Listen, I just finished playing the main mode on there. Even though there are many issues (Sound Effects, Some Lag, Weird Hub) it’s still a good version for people that don’t have NS, PS or XBOX. Still the weakest version of the game, but would still try it if my Switch Broke. But I want to say one last thing, I honestly think that Netflix is behind most of the port, so Don’t Blame Sonic Team. I Still have Hope that the Generations Reboot will be Good, but definitely don’t want something like this. Good Vid tho!😊
It’s kinda poetic. Christian Whitehead got his start by making an impressive port of older Sonic games to mobile. Now they took his work on an original game for consoles and made a bad port of it back to mobile.
ive commented that on your post because it's really absurd how the game runs very well on a switch emulator and unofficially on a ps3 but can't run on my fricking phone of all things a Mi 10 with similar power to s20 shouldn't lag on this thanks for covering this and i hope more and more people cover this so the issues are recognized by whoever ported the game
If I had a nickel for every time Sega decided to put weird pixel filtering on a classic sonic port, id have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Honestly, I own a nintendo switch and want a sonic game but I don’t think it’s that worth it, so seeing that I already have a Netflix account I saw this as a straight win, just connect a Bluetooth controller (or switch joy cons) and the game is 10x better, the way i see it is that the games that come WITH the Netflix subscription is just supposed to be something extra, you shouldn’t GET Netflix for the games, it’s just a little something extra while you have it.
Yeah, I understand why they release games under subscriptions but I don’t think it’s fair for those who don’t have subscriptions or can’t afford them. You can’t play sonic mania or dream team simply because you don’t have a Netflix account? Thats a little ridiculous imo. Great video man keep it up! Also thanks for coming out to my Sonic Heroes stream! That game is abysmal lmao
I find it hilarious that the Android version has such performance issues when the Switch version doesn't, even though the Switch is kind of an Android tablet reworked into a handheld.
This game absolutely SLUGS on mobile! For some reason, for me it ran at a constant 15-20fps! The only exception being when I touched the screen itself instead of the touch controls, at which point the game snaps back at 60fps!
They did not ruin it. They made it better by bringing it to mobile. It doesn’t matter if the menu layout is different. The way to get debug mode is different. The fact it’s partnered with Netflix and you need an active account to use. None of that matters all that matters is that it’s still sonic mania and it’s on mobile I might be a little bit biased because I’ve been waiting for a mobile version of sonic mania for years but that doesn’t change anything about the fact that I don’t care what other people think it’s still the greatest sonic game ever
The game doesn't even start on my phone. And I got my phone in 2022. I can't imagine a compatibility issue with such a recent one. It's not that big of a deal. I can still play the game on PC and a Steam Deck when I get around to getting one of those. But it's still disappointing. Sega keeps astounding me with their level of stupidity.
Is a better option for people who just already pay for Netflix, and the switch is a hybrid I know, but you can connect phones to monitors and tvs too, I think is a great alternative
Yeah , like wtf people was expecting from a Port that no one even knew it exited It's the same game 1:1 Nothing more , nothing Less, then what you want?
I got sonic 2 to run on a 12 year old phone running Android 4, and it didn't struggle a bit, it's embarrassing how badly Sega messed up this port considering the amount of slowdown it has.

However, I am aware that this video was 7 months ago, so many of your complaints in this video were compromised and/or fixed, such as the “touch stick” Overall now I definitely feel as if Netflix and/or Sega made it a better experience for mobile. Great video!
I just feel that since I have Sonic Mania on my Switch, now its on mobile, it feels so pointless, and I just feel putting a huge game like Sonic Mania PLUS, to mobile. It is such a great experience playing on console, and now that its on mobile, its not as great anymore...
The terrible optimization among other issues gives me the impression that either they did the porting process in-house without the help/consulting of the Mania team, or it was an extreme rushjob. Maybe both. Guess we’ll just have to see if any light gets shed on the development of this port in the future.
No idea what any of this is about… oh, right, iPhone 15 Pro. Lemme try on my 2016 SE… *oh.* Honestly though, as someone with a Netflix subscription and on-off Sonic fan who played it on Switch but hasn’t really since, this works well for me. I know it’s a more demanding game, but it is without issue on my iPhone 15 Pro. I do wish it was more optimized for Android devices and such, but at least it IS the full game and not just a demo or mockup.
Sega's most likely falling into the trap of several shareholders and other companies trying to want in on their IPs and while there are some legendary companies like Paramount, theres some bad apples like Netflix which just make everything worse for everyone solely to promote their brand.
Look guys, lets take a win when we can get one. As someone who doesnt have Sonic Mania and has a Netflix Subscription, I take this as a win, my only issue with the port is just the controls *and thats it.* I didnt even have any problems with glitches or anything. Its still the same old Sonic Mania with bad controls, i'd take these controls over Sonic R's controls any day.

Bad Touch Screen Design - So, first off you can still play the game, second off, when your playing the games your not even focused on the controls, third off, JUST USE A CONTROLLER. They RUINED Sonic Mania - This has no impact on Sonic Mania in general, this is just the mobile port. In Summary: 0/10 Nothing he says about or complains is even valid. (And for the record - i’m not playing the decomp, im playing the netflix version) I also haven’t been experiencing any frame drops or input lag, everything’s been stable and responsive. Really, the only issue I’m having is crackly audio, that’s it. I know I can’t speak for anyone other than myself, but I’ve been having a lot of fun with this version of the game and I’m plenty satisfied. Sorry for those who were left disappointed by it, though.
Games like Grand Summoners, Dragon Ball Legends, Raid: Shadow Legends, Solo Leveling: Arise (coming soon), One Punch Man World, etc... There are lots of good mobile games out there.
@@thedarknessinthelight9824 Even as a diehard Dragonball fan since 1999 I wouldn't even consider installing Legends, it looks like a mobile crap game like all the others and has probably gacha and pay and wait nagging elements like all the others. I would rather play even DBGT Final Bout on PS1 or Legacy of Goku 1 or something. I don't know a single mobile game that is good. Maybe emulators. But that's always better with a controller. Gaming is always better on anything other than a phone, even though you can connect a controller.
@@adrenaliner91 It has gacha elements, but it's not Pay-To-Win nor do they have ads every 10 seconds and the art is actually relatively good when given the chance. It's a game I'd rather play over all of the games of the PS1 AND 2 era, excluding PSP and Gamecube though...
Honestly I felt that the controls for playing through zones weren't that bad and I kinda like the vibe that the menu gives (though I agree that it should be touched up), but it was horrible for the bonus stages. The special stages were also really difficult with these controls too, but it is a mobile game so understandably it would be a bit difficult to work with, I'm hoping that I can try this with one of those bluetooth controllers that hold your phone while you play to see if that gives me a better experience since it seems that this was made with the intent of using one.
You sir are the reason people get bad ports like this, for one of if not the highest rated sonic games of recent times, a simple port shouldn’t be as bad as this.
I wrote a comment about having deja vu because I remember hearing about this Netflix version last year and it having issues. Then it got to the part about it launching last year in certain regions. Now it all makes sense. It's a shame they didn't address these problems during that year.
Not to mention the audio. Lots of choppy music in addition to sfx being reduced. Some sfx just don't play consistently either, collecting large amounts of blue spheres in the ufo sections doesn't work right, and the same goes with rings. It's like they limited how many sounds can be played
I played the mobile decomp port and it worked nicely, smooth 60fps except for special stage, which fair, but the netflix version crashes on the sega jingle for me The mobile port team really needed to optimize it more. Decomp solos
I played it a bunch up to stardust speedway on a long car ride today. I honestly saw little problems and found it easy to control despite being on mobile.
I can't lie but i like the mobile version there's just some problems: 1:The controls are not like the STH 1 and 2 remake,so it's hard to control since some people has huge hands 2:Would be pretty cool to play Versus online or local. 3:if you close the game in a special stage when you're losing, you can re-do it,but you need to start the act(or 2 acts) All over (Can't lie this is helpful)
I played the game. I had an amazing time. I played it as sonc and tails. Then I played as knuckles. I'm currently working on beating encore mode. Aside for the aspect ratio it's fine.
You can say that it’s bad but i think it was a good thing that they did this becouse i always wanted to play mania but i couldn’t becouse of some reasons but now i get the chance to play it aswell as some other people and i love it
Who needs this when there is a decomp on android for sonic Mania before this and this version of the game needs a Netflix account like. Come on I have no Netflix account but Sega said we need Netflix the Mania decomp is much better than this
I need to check on that decomp again. I remember I tried to run early releases but even my S20 wouldn't display anything but a black screen. As it is now, the official released for Mania is messed up on phones unless you really use Netflix a lot and you have a gamepad.
When I heard that Sonic Mania was getting a mobile port, I was super happy. But when I found out that I needed a Netflix account to ACTUALLY PLAY IT, I was immediately turned off. Like bro I don't have my own Netflix account ffs. Luckily I still have my PS4 copy so I'll just stick with that
That's why I like the decomp version much more, much more optimized, without any bugs, and MOD SUPPORT, besides that I can recompile any other mod (like Extra Slot Amy) and play it on my cell phone, No need for a streaming account (which we'll assume will one day remove these games, or end/change like it did with HBO Max)
I just started watching the video, and I disagree with the title, I love this port so far. But I do agree with the Netflix, it should’ve been on regular App Store. I guess the slight frame drop point is also valid too. Still I love this way more than 1,CD and 2 remake/remasters. A little off topic: Dream Team was made for Apple Arcade, which is the point. Plus I played that game x3 and honestly wasn’t a fan of it. (3:03) I think it was a good idea. I played this on Switch and it didn’t felt right moving the menu. Also the controls are great in my opinion, it’s no different than playing it on PC and Switch. Besides gliding with Ray.
The device compatibility is actually weird with Netflix in general. I've run across a few smartphones and tablets where Netflix isn't on Google Play Store. And yet, installing Netflix via APK is completely fine. So i really dont know what's up with that.
One of the main issues I’m having the game on iOS for my iPhone 15 Pro Max is sound. It pops in and out during gameplay… it’s annoying as hell. Netflix has to fix this!!!
they can’t. the reason the other games don’t have audio issues is because they recreate the sounds mimicking the genesis sound chip. Netflix has just taken the console sounds and ported it over. The console sounds are meant to sound fine on monitors, but phones have bad speakers
@@DanialDEcool well, Sonic Mania doesn’t mimic the Sega Genesis. And only remixes the original soundtrack using modern music programs. And current smartphones have pretty good speakers. As it’s not a speaker issue but a coding one. Other games, movies, and music sound incredible from the phone otherwise. The game wasn’t ported correctly on smartphones.
I don't really agree with this. I have an iPhone 8, which is about 6 years old, played and finished main mode in 2 days, and I didn't find any issues at all. The only thing that can be considered an "issue" is on Oil Ocean Zone 2, where it was hard to jump up the oil waterfall with a flame shield. I've also played Sonic 1 and 2 on mobile countless times though, so I may just be used to it. Also, the bonus stages are tough with stick controls, but the game can be played without it.
Fools they forgot that Nintendo and their big brain thinking have already made a handheld/home console that has been out for years now and already has a better and more optimized version of a game that has been out since 2017 💀
For me, I was sceptical about a game like sonic mania to be ported but, I just use an Xbox controller to fix the controls. I think it's fine but it's better on console.
What would you choose: A: paying monthly for an even worse port than other games which didnt do greatly Or B: paying alot but its fucking good unlike that. Monstrosity..
Seeing the mobile port for sonic mania plus being a kind of terrible port (at least for me.) is just sad. The main menu looks so weird. The decomp is WAAAY more better. The hidden level select looks SO BAD!! I hate it! If Taxman could make the hidden level select return in the sonic 1, 2 and CD remake then how come they couldn't make it like that in sonic mania plus?!! And its official too! Ridiculous. They didn't even bother changing the super transformation button and the switch characters button, they straight up ripped it from the monitors, which is supposed to look small, not big! The debug mode buttons (im talking abt the 1 and 2 icons) look so bad because of the Bilinear thing, they should've upscaled it
Of all things to think ruined a sonic game this was it???? It really doesn’t even look that bad. Also don’t forget this is technically a pc/console game so you should’ve expected a few bugs. 3:06 also for the record that’s not simplified thats more stylized then what most companies would normally do now
I don’t know what you people expected. It’s a mobile port from Netflix it’s not a big in house project or anything like that. At the very least it works and for some reason my version doesn’t even have the dpad.
Idk what any was expecting out of a mobile port of Sonic Mania since it will always be the worst way to play the game regardless of how well it is made. The Sonic 1 and 2 ports are exceptions with the amount of flavor content added in addition to the QoL improvements that make them a lot more playable than their original versions and even the recent Sonic Origins ports. But this is JUST Sonic Mania on your phone. You can always play the better versions on PC and Console.

My mom already had a netflix account, so it was fairly easy. So why are you complaining ?
@agamingchannelolXD1283 Way to miss the point!
Being tied to a subscription is horrendous.
They already tried that with Dream Team and look how that turned out.
Not everyone can use or pay for Netflix.
Not to mention that Netflix keeps raising the prices of its services, but that's a whole different topic on its own.
Normally it wouldn't be AS bad until you realize that you paid almost the same amount as the game's price on Steam, (20 dollars. Rounded up. Not including tax.) for an inferior, unoptimized, scummy port! Mania should not be having FPS drops on modern-day devices. My old crappy potato PC can run Mania at a consistent 60 FPS, so what gives?
Typical SEGA, they hate making money via quality. They could've easily just ported Mania on the Google Play Store without the Netflix thing for like 6-10 dollars or something using the same framework as the mobile ports of 1, 2, and CD, but that would make too much sense, so they decided to fuck up another port because that seems to be the one thing they're consistent at.

it was so weird to me when I just randomly found out that mania was on mobile devices. I was so confused but decided to just try it out to see what it's like. It for some reason doesn't scale properly on my phone despite the fact that my phone is modern. I'm on a Samsung Note 20, so I do not see why it even has that issue.
I feel for u mate. I haven’t played the game yet so I can’t give my thoughts but I am expecting some decent things so far
Not to mention that there are also some audio issues at times that I experienced for some reason.
I kinda like the port, sadly though Netflix is the one who ported it and not Sonic Team. Also, no mod support :(
No dip, its netflix and how would you get the mods in the first place?
Sonic team didn’t even make mania lmao, that was Christian whitehead and headcannon
It’s not a mobile game. They can’t make it fully optimised
@@DanialDEcool ??? tf are you talking about? Yes, mania wasn't originally a mobile game, but they ported it to mobile meaning the code is running on native hardware, not through a translation layer like emulators are. Sonic 1, 2, and CD aren't mobile games either, and they play perfectly fine if we go by your logic
the fact that playing sonic mania on a switch emulator runs better than that shit port says something
@@DanialDEcool If you have the source code, you can recompile it for any platform you care to. Easier said than done, but an optimized native port is possible. Heck, there's already a decompilation project online where you can get the source code and build it yourself, and besides the 3D sections, there's even a fullspeed build for a mf Wii!
@@avisprimeyTechnically not fullspeed since there are slowdowns in the UFO chase parts but otherwise it runs perfectly fine even on a Wii
How did they fuck up a mobile port of MANIA?! Of all games?! I was considering playing this just for the hell of it, but now, Mania mobile can get fucked
There's an unofficial mobile port of it based on the RSDK5 decompilation that was released ages ago, and it's almost perfect.

I’m gonna be honest this just seems like sonic fans yelling at the sky as usual. It’s a fine way to play mania, especially for people who conveniently have a Netflix account who don’t want to pay for the game by itself.

Well I never experienced these errors, but the menu is kinda wack
It’s because they’re complaining about weaker devices. This game isn’t even supposed to be used on a phone. Origins literally had the same issue. Most of his points is “they did it before” when they had to rebuild the game. They weren’t gonna rebuild sonic mania for mobile once again. The original 2013 versions also failed on perfect inputs.
They really think that they’re gonna force netflix to rebuild a game. What a world.

Sucks to see that we need a Netflix subscription just to play Mania. I have one so it’s not a problem for me, but for those who don’t have it, I’m sorry.
it’s not that inconvenient. they could just buy the game for a little more permanently.
Thank you!
It’s kinda poetic. Christian Whitehead got his start by making an impressive port of older Sonic games to mobile. Now they took his work on an original game for consoles and made a bad port of it back to mobile.
funnily enough my touch control just don't even show up
HOW DID THEY MESS THAT UP????
Same lol. I had to download a virtual gamepad app to play the game
Maybe your phone is too old
ive commented that on your post because it's really absurd how the game runs very well on a switch emulator and unofficially on a ps3 but can't run on my fricking phone of all things
a Mi 10 with similar power to s20 shouldn't lag on this
thanks for covering this and i hope more and more people cover this so the issues are recognized by whoever ported the game
If I had a nickel for every time Sega decided to put weird pixel filtering on a classic sonic port, id have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Technically like 5 times if you count every game in origins individually
you could just set the filter to sharp though
Honestly, I own a nintendo switch and want a sonic game but I don’t think it’s that worth it, so seeing that I already have a Netflix account I saw this as a straight win, just connect a Bluetooth controller (or switch joy cons) and the game is 10x better, the way i see it is that the games that come WITH the Netflix subscription is just supposed to be something extra, you shouldn’t GET Netflix for the games, it’s just a little something extra while you have it.
for the weird pixel filter, that disappears if you set the filter in the video config from none to sharp (on my phone it worked atleast).
even with a netflix account, i somehow still feel robbed of accessibility to this game.
Oh Boy! Last time I checked your channel, you had 1k or 2k subs, now you have 24k subs, awesome !
2:23 Yeah this is a big issue, a PS3 could literally play this game
a ps-vita can also run it
A Wii can manage the 2D sections
Yeah, it can run an optimised version. this is just a touch support port. It does nothing on top. that’s why audio and gameplay can lag.
Sonic Mania port should’ve never happened like at all. I just don’t understand why did Netflix decided to port Sonic mania? Great video SF!
You prefer not having a mobile port than having one?
I’m just grateful that they put it on mobile
I find it hilarious that the Android version has such performance issues when the Switch version doesn't, even though the Switch is kind of an Android tablet reworked into a handheld.
This game absolutely SLUGS on mobile! For some reason, for me it ran at a constant 15-20fps!
The only exception being when I touched the screen itself instead of the touch controls, at which point the game snaps back at 60fps!
It means your phone is either old or not comparable. I hit constant 60fps.

It’s because the sounds were mixed for more complex audio devices.
"This could have been a slam dunk if the controls were good and this wasn't a Netflix exclusive"
"Also Who is buying a Netflix subscription just so they can play Sonic Mania on their mobile devices" you can buy the game for $20 God dammit
I played the mobile decomp port and it worked nicely, smooth 60fps except for special stage, which fair, but the netflix version crashes on the sega jingle for me
The mobile port team really needed to optimize it more. Decomp solos
The even worse thing is that the arrows on the select screen arent even aligned
I played it a bunch up to stardust speedway on a long car ride today. I honestly saw little problems and found it easy to control despite being on mobile.
I can't lie but i like the mobile version there's just some problems:
1:The controls are not like the STH 1 and 2 remake,so it's hard to control since some people has huge hands
2:Would be pretty cool to play Versus online or local.
3:if you close the game in a special stage when you're losing, you can re-do it,but you need to start the act(or 2 acts) All over
(Can't lie this is helpful)
I played the game. I had an amazing time. I played it as sonc and tails. Then I played as knuckles. I'm currently working on beating encore mode. Aside for the aspect ratio it's fine.
You can say that it’s bad but i think it was a good thing that they did this becouse i always wanted to play mania but i couldn’t becouse of some reasons but now i get the chance to play it aswell as some other people and i love it
Who needs this when there is a decomp on android for sonic Mania before this and this version of the game needs a Netflix account like. Come on I have no Netflix account but Sega said we need Netflix the Mania decomp is much better than this
the controls just don't appear to me. Unfortunately, I don't have a Bluetooth controller to connect. my device model is MOTO G23
do you have any connector cables? Like one with 2 charger ends? I think you can plug the controller in with it
I need to check on that decomp again.
Luckily I still have my PS4 copy so I'll just stick with that
personally i like the port a lot, i havent noticed any issues so far
i just want to know why the controllers for this game is so SMALL
That's why I like the decomp version much more, much more optimized, without any bugs, and MOD SUPPORT, besides that I can recompile any other mod (like Extra Slot Amy) and play it on my cell phone, No need for a streaming account (which we'll assume will one day remove these games, or end/change like it did with HBO Max)
not to mention someone ported Mania to the fucking DREAMCAST too, older smartphones can absolutely run this game
(3:03)
I think it was a good idea.
Fools they forgot that Nintendo and their big brain thinking have already made a handheld/home console that has been out for years now and already has a better and more optimized version of a game that has been out since 2017 💀
I honestly thought the mobile port was fine, but I was playing on iOS so maybe that makes a difference? (I had some issues with the sound, tho)
Looks like the pixel filtering thing isn't on iOS so that's good
For me, I was sceptical about a game like sonic mania to be ported but, I just use an Xbox controller to fix the controls.
I think it's fine but it's better on console.
I never had any issues playing this version.
Aside from the title screen and menu music being a little juddery.
What would you choose:
A: paying monthly for an even worse port than other games which didnt do greatly
Or
B: paying alot but its fucking good unlike that.
Monstrosity..
Literally no sane person would get netflix just to try this out, this thing is just a bonus if you already have it
Seeing the mobile port for sonic mania plus being a kind of terrible port (at least for me.) is just sad. The debug mode buttons (im talking abt the 1 and 2 icons) look so bad because of the Bilinear thing, they should've upscaled it
The worst thing is that the joystick controllers for it is that it just feels wobbly or too messed up
Of all things to think ruined a sonic game this was it????
It really doesn’t even look that bad. Also don’t forget this is technically a pc/console game so you should’ve expected a few bugs.
3:06 also for the record that’s not simplified thats more stylized then what most companies would normally do now
For me whenever i die during that spider boss fight the game crashes and i have to start the entire flying battery zone all over again.
I don’t know what you people expected. It’s a mobile port from Netflix it’s not a big in house project or anything like that. At the very least it works and for some reason my version doesn’t even have the dpad.
Idk how they screwed that up so badly. One of the devs behind Mania was Christian Whitehead (the guy behind the Sonic 1, 2 and CD mobile ports)
Mania on netflix is not so bad BUT WHERES SONIC 3 & KNUCKLES PORT?
4:14 massive?
Idk what any was expecting out of a mobile port of Sonic Mania since it will always be the worst way to play the game regardless of how well it is made. The Sonic 1 and 2 ports are exceptions with the amount of flavor content added in addition to the QoL improvements that make them a lot more playable than their original versions and even the recent Sonic Origins ports. But this is JUST Sonic Mania on your phone. You can always play the better versions on PC and Console.
