This Before You Buy feels different. You can tell Falcon is super passionate to explain everything about this game. Man just really loves his classic Sonic
Haven't played the Mega Drive games in years and I mean years. I'm 45 now and I was in my late teens when I played Sonic 3 and Knuckles and I bought this collection for the Nostalgia. I really like the idea of playing all games as one big game in Story Mode with animated cutscenes along the way. I look forward to playing this over the weekend when I have some time to myself.
@@muhammadfajri9392 apparently when sega was ready to bring the mega drive to North America, some company had already patented the name mega drive, so sega of America settled on genesis, why I don’t know?
I would've loved to see this be different -- imagine all of the games as a single chronological game experience, with updated sprites to match Mania, and also have save states. I would pay $60 easy for that game.
I grew up playing every single Sonic in this collection on the Genesis & Sega CD console. These games made me want keep trying until I beat the level… regardless of how many tries it took or how late it got. Such an addicting yet simple premise. The classic games rule!

Unpopular opinion I'm sure, yes I like a new game as much as the next guy but who honestly still has faith in any studio at this point. At least these games are good
There is nothing inherently wrong with remakes and remasters. It's just when they either get the rush treatment, or are released 2 years after the original game (Last of Us) where it's annoying. Classic 16 bit given some love is never a bad thing, though, I've repurchased these games several times and it's hard to swallow the price point, it's clear that a lot of love was put into this game. I do have the retro engine versions of Sonic 1 and 2 and they were free with ads, or ad-free for something like 3$ each, which is why this price is hard to swallow. I would love some Gamecube games getting this treatment though.
@@SuperballsSupervidsOnYT You are right in that regard, even Witcher 3 falls under that category imo. I would rather they put all that work in the new Witcher game instead of playing it safe. I'm primarily focusing on games where the hardware is ancient. There still so many gems buried.

Rumors went around about a year or so ago that the remakes went through development hell and got cancelled so we might not be getting one anymore. I hope it was fake though, those are still my favorite Sonic games.
Cool, I like that Map layout of each game, really makes me wonder if Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, and Knuckles Chaotix will become part of the map in a DLC. My only complaint is the left-out original Sonic 3 and Knuckles music. That MJ and others he worked with on those games. I ❤ this video!
Having blue spheres accessible separately is probably pretty awesome for things like the speedrunning community, completionists, challenges, etc. I love seeing how much the games were both improved and kept true to the original sources. I know the devs spoke out recently that SEGA had basically fucked with what they gave them, hadn't looked into exactly what. But I'm hoping it doesn't ruin what looks to be an overall amazing experience for the classics on top of what Mania did for the classic series.
8:17 Even with some of the bugs probably squashed in future patches, I still can't give this game a full score due to some missing Genesis tracks in Sonic 3 (the new (old) tracks feel like placeholders and sound too Game Gear-ish for my taste) and even more baffling is the fact that the MJ composers are still listed in the end credits despite the former. (Here's the silver lining though: the original JP opening track for Sonic CD called You Can Do Anything, which is missing the vocal in the 2011 version due to music licensing issues at the time, has been fully restored in Sonic Origins!)
A tip for fans, despite the add, there are no "new" characters, the only thing that hasnt been released in a port was Knuckles in Sonic 1. Which im sure none of us really count as a new character.

Honestly, if they put in some patches to smooth out the edges, this’ll prove itself as the definitive way to play these games if they aren’t already considered so by some.
I wish they'd make Sonic Adventure and SA2 for the newer consoles. Also as a faithful SEGA fan I will rebuy these games every 5-8 years as new consoles come out. Most of us have like 5 copies of Resident Evil and those remakes cost just as much. You have no idea how long we've been waiting for Sonic 3 to be available on a console or handheld device. I was lucky and back when the Galaxy phone first came out I was able to download a version of Sonic 3 from the Android Market (I feel so old now). I ran out of space and had to delete it and the app was no longer available. I was really mad at myself however this game hasn't been available on a console since PlayStation 2 that's definitely worth $40 in my book. I'm glad to have Sonic 3 but I wish they kept the normal lives system and didn't add spindash and other things. I liked that Sonic The Hedgehog was hard because you couldn't spin the same way you can in Sonic 2. And I like the challenge of not having a save system it builds character lol. You learn how to be a better gamer. Nothing is worse than messing up a jewel game with no more games left and knowing you'll have to play it all over again if you want the proper ending 😂 Don't get me wrong I love having the save system at the same time it's a love-hate relationship it's definitely cheating 😂 Its sad to see that they had to change the music. I never got the idea that games needed save states... there are no lives and these games aren't grueling in any way... the hardest thing about this are the special stages and you can retry em with coins scattered all over the world. I might get this once it reaches the 30 mark. love the care and heart they put into the animations! wish we had super peel out, I know spin dash is the same and even better but I loved how that thing looked.
This was a great summary, thank you! I remember playing these games on Genesis way back in the day. Love the "no lives" feature, maybe now I can actually beat them :) Added to my wish list to grab once it goes on sale.
I'm enjoying Origins so far, S3&K has always been my absolute favourite Sonic game, and only Mania cast any doubt in my mind about that. There are some shortfalls though. I'd really hoped there might have been some of the 8-bit games hidden in there, perhaps unlockable through game progress or something. Also a major oversight is not having the ability to choose your music on Sonic CD, especially when even the PS3 port had this option. The American music is interesting and a bit different, but the European/Japanese soundtrack is still infinitely superior.
"...You could really benefit from save states, these types of things that are *common* in other collections ... *It's an option that hopefully they'll patch in later.*" Liked & subbed for your courage. There's a curiously passionate minority surrounding past Retro Engine titles in defense of save-anywhere prohibition. If there's a rational explanation like manual saves bricking the cross game merit tracking, I would believe it... if the news comes from the developers.
Oh man that time travel music hit my nostalgia button HARD. And that's with me thinking Sonic 3 & Knuckles is still the best Sonic game ever. I spent a lot of time enjoying Sonic CD and getting all the good futures :)
The Ice Cap Zone OST is probably the best song in the original Sonic 3 game. I even avoid going into Super Sonic on that level just so I can enjoy the entire track the whole time I'm playing the stage. Sucks that they can't get the rights to it. Oh well, it is what it is.
No CRT filters? Really? The CRT filter from Mania is amazing! Also, Sonic 1 really needs to have dithering to make the waterfall work properly, have anyone checked how that looks on Origins yet?
I'm a huge Sonic fan and I must say... Flacon, you get me man. Anytime I see a before you buy pop up for a Sonic game I watch it as soon as I possibly can because I know a fellow Sonic nerd is about to break it down for me. If I happen to watch one of these after I buy a game I just nod along in agreement throughout the entire video.
This came just in time as I finally got my old CRT working with my PC. Gonna try out 4:3 Classic mode for sure. Can't believe they even included _all_ of the Sonic&Knuckles cart bonuses.
@@llab3903 yeah...it does tho. You asked "why?" RE: playing on a CRT, and andy23r answered. Scanlines. I would also add zero lag, but scanlines are the big draw IMO

A great collection! It also had comic book covers you could look at, a full comic book issue you could read, the ability to play these games both separately and with the lock on and it had more games overall. It also had a pc version as well so I believe that Sega should've just released that one on Steam and other platforms. Sonic origins is a good collection as well but it doesn't come close to mega collection in my opinion.
The loss of the Ice Cap Zone OST does more than sting. It straight hurts me. As a kid, I would have atleast two saves on Sonic 3 and one of them would be left on Ice Cap Zone just so I could go back and listen to it as this was the days before internet and youtube
I'm a huge sonic fan and will definitely be adding this collection to my list of games. Sonic Mania was great but my wish finally came true since I wanted all origin games in one game. I'm not waiting for a sale either!
The best way to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the ROM hack called Sonic 3 Complete. Facts: Mushroom Hill's actual name is "Mushroom Valley". Ever wondered where that snowboard came from in Sonic 3 & Knuckles/Sonic 3 Complete? The snowboard is actually the Flying Battery door and Sonic uses it as a snowboard. The correct level order is: Angel Island, Hydrocity (Pronounced: Hydro-City), Marble Garden, Carnival Night, Flying Battery (At night), Ice Cap, Launch Base, Mushroom Valley, Sandopolis, Lava Reef, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg and Doomsday. The PC versions of the Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base's background music are based on prototype versions of Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base's prototype background music. In the Sonic 3 & Knuckles ROM hack called Sonic 3 Complete, Knuckles faces off against EggRobo instead of Dr. Eggman in Flying Battery, part 2 where EggRobo uses Eggman's flamethrower machine against Knuckles. In Sonic 3 Complete, you can perform Super/Hyper Cancel so you can save ring power. In Sonic 3 Complete, Tails is playable in the Blue Sphere special stages from the game Blue Sphere, which was Sonic 1 connected to the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge. In Sonic 3 Complete, Sonic, Super Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Super Knuckles, Hyper Knuckles and Super Tails are fully animated. In Sonic 3 Complete, you can play the unused Super/Hyper tune. In Sonic 3 Complete you can play the original level order from the prototype version of Sonic 3 (Angel Island, Hydrocity, Marble Garden, Carnival Night, Flying Battery (At night), Ice Cap, Launch Base, Mushroom Valley, Sandopolis, Lava Reef, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg and Doomsday), which is canon or you can play the non-canon level order (Angel Island, Hydrocity, Marble Garden, Carnival Night, Ice Cap, Launch Base, Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Sandopolis, Lava Reef, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg and Doomsday). Knuckles' story mode comes after Sonic and Tails' story modes. In Sonic 3 Complete, you can change the background music for the Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base levels. The prototype versions of Carnival Night, Ice Cap and Launch Base's background music came first. In Sonic 3 Complete, you can play the prototype version of the Sonic 3 ending music instead of Michael Jackson's version, which is based off of his song "Stranger In Moscow". The PC version of Sonic 3's ending music is based on the prototype version. In Sonic 3 Complete, Sonic's name on the Tornado (Sonic's airplane) is not backwards in the end credits while the Tornado is facing left and not right. And in Sonic 3 Complete, Super Tails' Super Flickies are fully animated. And by the way, Michael Jackson was innocent. He was acquitted in court for his so-called allegations. And Jackson DID compose music for the Carnival Night and Launch Base levels. Plus, the reworked Ice Cap tune is based off of an old '80's song called "Hard Times" by an old '80's band called The Jetzons (Not to be confused with The Jetsons from Hanna-Barbera).
I’m glad we have another way for newer fans to enjoy these classic games, however for older fans like me, I’d probably wait for a sale cause I had to pay $65 aud for this collection, which is a bit too much imo. Still, this is a decent collection, not nearly as bad as some people have been saying. And origins has fulfilled my desire to finally have an official portable version of sonic 3&k (rip the Michael Jackson tracks tho)
we can complain about the price, but these were rebuilt in great detail. The price makes more sense than it just being slapped in an emulator or barely did anything new to the game. There's a lot here that adds to the value. Especially the animated shorts that are phenomenal.
I'll wait on a discount. I have Mega Collection on Gamecube, Ultimate Genesis Collection on 360 and I also have each one released individually on XBLA. Plus, I absolutely hate that they changed the best music in Sonic 3 back to remastered prototype music.
Thanks for this! I was gonna get it for my kids, but then one of them asked for Sonic Mania last month, so maybe I'll hold off on Origins for the time being since those OG games are already on Android
I was really mad about the lives thing, but that mania drop dash is really just reason enough for me to buy this and I had no idea that it was in the collection!
I miss my sonic and knuckles cartridge, I still remember figuring out you can play as knuckles on sonic 2 if you put sonic 2 in sonic and knuckles, if you put sonic 1 in you got a shit tonne of the bonus chaos levels where you gotta collect the blue orbs, kids today don't even knoooow
Falcon you don't know how happy it made me when you spoke about the sonic 3 music and Micheal Jackson! I've always known he was a silent contributer, but they never credited him, this pretty much confirmed it! You can tell also by how amazing the soundtrack was! Anyway thanks again! Donté out

The American music is interesting and a bit different, but the European/Japanese soundtrack is still infinitely superior.
You actually can change the soundtrack but is only acessible in anniversary mode
Even to mania 3 and knuckles is my favorite like each mission flows something other games dont
0:13 Falcon... or is it really Jet? Are you two both the same bird, Falcon?
5:51 hey, "Blue Spheres Guy" would absolutely love this feature
They also made the knuckles boss fight in sonic 3 and knuckles more challenging which I really appreciate
I believe the reason for this is because these games are not being emulated
@@DStea1th_ Not for Jedi Knight, KotOR, Fallout and countless other series. Eidetic saving certainly doesn't need emulation.
I gotta say what I love the most is the animated cutscenes/ shorts in this.
I'm so hyped to get my hands on this! Thanks for y'all time reviewing this! Love y'all work!
Why would you even want to do that
Some people actually prefer scan lines which I don't understand
@@andy23r that doesn’t answer my question.
@@llab3903 yeah...it does tho. You asked "why?" RE: playing on a CRT, and andy23r answered. Scanlines. I would also add zero lag, but scanlines are the big draw IMO
@@llab3903 I do it for the pixel response time, black levels, and to properly view art that was meant to be viewed blended on a CRT display. There are some things we gave up for the convenience of LCD that CRT was and still is better at doing.
Sonic mega collection was honestly the goat of these collections
True
It bums me out that they didn’t try to get the rights to those tracks. But I will be getting this for the story mode.
Big respect from the UK 🇬🇧
All those waterslides in Labyrinth Zone killed the FPS
Between this and Mania, you should be all set...
COMPLETELY agree about the drop dash. So fucking perfect.
good review
Th mission mode is the best part of this collection. It reminds me of NES Remix.
we can complain about the price, but these were rebuilt in great detail.
S3&K is not (unless you want to emulate it)
@@josephwilson3180 Sonic 3 AIR can be played on mobile
@@LongplayScrapbook True
This was super thorough! I was thinking of buying it, but after watching this, I'm definitely going to wait for a discount.
I love this collections because they’re not emulated. Built from the ground up on the retro engine
I was really mad about the lives thing, but that mania drop dash is really just reason enough for me to buy this and I had no idea that it was in the collection!
The whole of England is really just two men in a large costume
Bought it at 50% off, so it was much more reasonable, and I love these games!
Wow what a in-depth view by a Sonic Expert!
I love sonic so much and being reviewed by you guys is even better, y'all are most honest reviews I can trust as a duck 🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆🦆.
I am not a sonic player, but those animated 'intros' seem so good that it can be a modern standalone animated series.🤔
The widescreen is worth it.
Falcon you don't know how happy it made me when you spoke about the sonic 3 music and Micheal Jackson! I've always known he was a silent contributer, but they never credited him, this pretty much confirmed it! You can tell also by how amazing the soundtrack was! Anyway thanks again! Donté out
they seem to not want to make a good sonic game anymore
Because the sonic team ran to Mario team because of poor treatment 🤣😭😭
Mania was good, thats about it
How? What's the context?
@@isotonicshade and that wasn't even made by sonic team, that was made by fans.
@@CRAgamer *fans already employed by indie studios,* still pathetic for Sonic Team to have to their big triple A sonic games be upstaged by a few indie studios on their first try.
Sonic Mania: give me your money so that you can reexperience your nostalgic childhood and listen to some amazing tunes and have fun with new great features
Sonic origins: give me your money
I need a Mario release similar to this.
Nah, the old Mario games suck. The 2-D ones they did on Wii and Wii U were great though.
@@SeanUCF can we get all those releases for Xbox and ps. I love the old ones.

Yo, don't forget, Super Sonic in Sonic 1. That's a game changer right there. But, only if you enter max emeralds/all emeralds cheat on soundtest/level select. Same deal with super peel out in Sonic 3.
This "game" is a lame cashgrab
Good news.
You get to choose whether or not you want to buy it.
I’m buying a 2nd hand ps5 copy with art book.
I’ll put it next to my Megadrives.
Bought the game this morning but still had to tune in
1:47 Unless we're talking about Sonic 3, where the physics are significantly faster for whatever reason and that breaks scripted sequences and level layering in a few sequences.
I'm not the only person who's said this but this "before you buy" felt different. Idk exactly what it was but it felt more casually made and I'm by no means saying this is a bad thing. I tend to really enjoy the Gameranx reviews anyways and they're one of my go to's. The more "casual" nature of this review made it feel less like a typical game review and more like a good friend telling you all the ups and downs of a game they just got and really enjoy.
Duuude XD The tbags at 6:20 is literally me everytime I gotta stay still or wait 😂
Falcon’s tone in this is “I’ve played this 10,000 times” 😂
Sure, it’s a bit pricey for a collection but it’s way better that the anniversary junk Nintendo throws out. After all these years, Genesis still does what Nintendon’t!
You didn’t mention the greatest patch they added to Sonic 3: The new animations for the CNZ barrels let you know if it goes up and down or not
Sonic 1 and 2 are free (with ads) on mobile with the modern engine.
If you have Sonic 3 already just install Sonic 3 A.I.R mod to it and it's really the most definitive way to play
looking forward to picking this up sometime soon!
I could play these games on my Sega Genesis, MiSter, ps3 ,ect… can’t believe I’m considering buying this
This product would be more appealing if these games hadn't been re-released on everything under the sun more than once and if it wasn't $40.
The cutscenes look really crisp
I loved sonic and knuckles so friggin much
I really wish they'd unlock the frame rate for these ports and Sonic mania. On PC I dream to play 2D Sonic at 120+ FPS.
