Every time I watch this video I can’t help but think about Neil’s words talking about the lyrics and ideas behind RTB. He didn’t know it but in 3 years from this interview he would lose his precious daughter and his wife Jackie within 10 months of each other.
The death of his daughter, broke their hearts and as Neil later said, it killed his wife. The band STOPPED & we didn’t know if we would ever have anymore RUSH after 1997. Luckily Neil found love again and a few years later we were graced with a rebirth of RUSH with the album Vapor Trails.
These 3 guys mean more to me than most people & the RUSH family we have built along the way is still intact.
We will be here together for as long as we’re here. We have lost quite a few family members especially as we have aged but we remember them & we relive those years telling stories of the tours and the planes, trains and automobiles that got us from show to show, tour after tour.
    “Why are we here
    Because we’re here
    Roll the bones……..” 🤘🤘

All three of these guys were and are very intelligent musicians. I think Neil and Alex were very shy and that’s why sometimes their interviews were weird but to me that’s what makes them awesome. They’re another cool documentary somebody slammed the door on Alex‘s finger and crushed it and he still played the concert and continued on their tour.

You are just beginning to understand one of THE VERY BEST Bands. You’re doing good so far considering that you’re getting a lot of it at a faster pace than us Old School who grew with them for years as their career did. It’s a lot. But it’s a good lot. Now you see why they aren’t just any badass Rock band with a cool sound. Oh no, RUSH is very special and that’s why they have lifelong, loyal fans like me around the world.
We are a very happy group of insiders who have excellent music taste. I’ve said it before, no dummies in a RUSH crowd. There’s an insane video of the Ohio State Marching Band doing a RUSH tribute last year that has to be seen to be believed. It’s more impactful for us longtime fans because we know everything they are doing. It was after Neil died and Alex and Geddy said they were speechless when they saw it. It’s something for us Old School to see after all the years of being right there live. I highly recommend you get around to it at some point. In fact, just talking about it now, I’m going to rewatch it!

The loyalty's a real thing. Don't know more devoted fan base. Not for being "cool", just great music. Becse they're all thoughtful, humble, nice guys, & their friendship that comes thru.
Dedication/work ethic to making good music, playing best show each night. & lyrics that reflect things that ppl really connect to.
Not to sound gushy, but I mean to say its real, & band often commented on being touched by it, not even understanding why?
Watch R'nR Hall of Fame press conf, when Rush's induction officially announced. Already knew, but the reaction? He wasn't blowing smoke.
Blah, blah, blah you get the point.

Their 'Roll The Bones' Tour would've been the one and only opportunity for me to see Rush live in concert - but work then prevented me from it 😏 So I swore to myself to not miss out again once they'd return - by which time I'd meanwhile moved from Germany to NZ, where they would *never* tour! 😔

  • @mpkelley20
    @mpkelley20 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Roll the bones was 1991 because I saw them my freshman year in college. Vinnie Moore opened up for them which was all instrumental. The concert overall was insane with lasers and crazy lights. I saw them twice for every tour after that and and saw some great bands like
candlebox and mr big open for them before they moved to “an evening with” where they did 3 hour shows.
I think 1994 was their Counterparts tour which was also amazing (that was with candlebox who opened for them). That was a return to their heavier sound.
Can’t wait for you to go through their catalog. Whether you do it on your own or post the videos, will be interesting to see what era you like best. They go from zeppelin to synths to lighter rock back to heavier. And their last album is one of their heaviest. I’m actually jealous that you get to discover them now.

The comment Neil makes about "escaping death" as teenagers, etc. He literally almost drowned when he was 10. I don't recall the full story and I don't think it was anything necessarily heedless on his part, but he was at the lake with friends and was in the water and - if I remember correctly - some of the kids thru horseplay tried to keep him down and he kept trying to surface and finally just couldn't do it and he started sinking. Some of the older kids finally pulled him out. I've often wondered if that had a small part to play in his thoughts for that album.

You should react to their induction into the Hall of Fame, when Dave Grohl actually says, "when did Rush become cool ". I'm not quoting exactly. It was a great induction. The audience was at least 90% there for Rush, pretty much screw the rest of the inductees. That would be a good reaction. Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins are so pumped to induct them its fun to watch.

Ok. I don’t recommend videos ever here but I am now. Something to watch on your own time. No reaction needed. This is a video from DW drums who made most of Neil’s kits over the last couple of decades. The broader video talks about building drunks but it then gets into the building of a kit made from 1500 year old bog oak found in Romania. It’s what they built Neil’s 40th anniversary kit from.
Skip ahead to 40:20 and it starts about the kit. A few minutes in you’ll get an interview with Neil where he discusses the kits and what he attempts to get from his drums and working with companies who build them. I find it fascinating. I know you are a bass player but the same type of “artistry” goes into making any musical instrument.

I really think the most off the mark opinion about these guys is that they're "nerd" rock or geeks or whatever. It has nothing to do with being obsession prone (is it more cool to be obsessed with narcotics instead of chance?), or how much "smarter" they were. They were simply 3 dudes who thought for themselves without much concern about what's hip and current to write songs about in the industry they worked in. That's all. The fact that they sound "smart" or nerdy just means its a rarity for people in general to think for themselves and act on that instead of any herd mentality, I guess. Their normal humanity should be the norm when unfortunately it appears abnormal.

They are nerds/dorks. It's ok. They are a total anomaly... Super dorky yet super cool.

I think you got sucked into liking RUSH. From everything I've ever heard about these guys is that they're great people and didn't let their incredible success go to their head.

I love the video. I pretty much stopped following Rush by this point. Interesting that they evolved into comfortable and mature rock band. For me the mid 70s to early 80s incarnation of Rush was way more epic. But time doesn’t stand still.

@@IMNOTGEDDY,like I said before, I’m from a day one RUSH town,so I didn’t know that it was dismissed. Sure it wasn’t as appreciated as some of the other albums but that really wasn’t a thing here in my city.
When I say day one, I’m talking from their first American tour on up they came here. It was never a question here. We didn’t know they were ever considered “uncool.” They were obviously badass and that’s how it was. San Antonio, TEXAS is a RUSH stronghold! They came here on almost every tour. We were one of the very first, big markets from the beginning and they never forgot that day 1 loyalty. Caress of Steel was just part of the progression. It wasn’t questioned here, it was embraced.
Got plenty of radio play too.
