Said it to you after your earlier reaction to the Neil R30 solo...as a fellow black drummer who grew up in the church--but was turned on to Neil waaaayyy before others were...your reactions give me SO much pleasure, validation, and joy. And yes, Neil wasn't even a huge fan of this performance, because he was struggling to hear the band because of where he was situated. BUT it is still an incredible performance, from where he would actually build and get BETTER. Because you're a guy that does them, I don't know if you appreciate the sheer joy of watching someone else's discovery. But it is uplifting and refreshing. God bless you, brother!
The middle part with the cowbells was a throwback to his famous solo on Rush's live album "Exit Stage Left." That's why the audience cheers and you see the killer sax dude smiling! I think he's the only horn player who knew Rush's older stuff!

He covers reggae, South American, Africana, jazz and rock, but you already know that since you reacted to his Frankfurt solo.
Something you might not know about Peart. After playing 30+ years. He decided to tear down his technique and take lessons from Freddy Gruber. He could have continued to play at an incredible level, but he still strived for more. To me that says more about him than anything.

Says something about Neil that when it came time for the solo vanity project he gathered 18 other drummers to do a tribute album for another. "The Making of Burning for Buddy" Is well worth a look in your own time. Not sure the world is ready for a 4 1/2 hour reaction vid. Along with "Neil Peart, Doane Perry & Terry Bozzio on DC LIVE" . The jam session at the end is not to be missed.
on the Johnny Carson show Buddy Rich was asked if there were any up and coming drummers he'd recommend and he said yes "Neil Peart"

He was born in 52, I believe, so that would make him 42 here. He was in his early 60’s in the Frankfurt solo. He was amazing.

On top of everything else has said about him, he is also a great author. I highly recommend his books! An astounding talent.
For a man who was so private, the books reveal quite a bit.
Fans called him the professor of percussion for this very reason. He studied drumming from many different cultures, styles,and genre's. He brought that and his rush style to everything he played.

Not a traditional jazz drummer, but what a drummer, Beautiful.
Neil often switches around his drumsticks for a different sound. He started doing that when he was a teen. When he would pound the drums so hard he would break the tips off them. There were times he couldn't afford new sticks so he would play the drums using the butt of the sticks. Apparently much of the rehearsal for this was Neil adapting to the new arrangement. He was sent a different arrangement to practice prior to this performance. When he arrived he was given a different one!!
Neil also overseen the making of his drums, from choosing the wood for the body to the type of heads that he would use, and even the metal parts that were put on the drums were ones that he wanted.
It's most of Buddy's touring band there for the tribute. Great mix of drummers on the album. The set was special for the tribute and a mix of Buddy and Neil. Like your eye for detail. Snare was a Slingerland Artist model. Heads were normally Remo on snare and Evans on toms.

Neil, though not imbued with so-called lifelong jazz chops transitions to traditional grip and does one heck of job playing way out of his preferred comfort zone. (This is very difficult stuff for a rock drummer!)Very few rock drummers would sit in for a swing/jazz session with one of the top bands in the world, a band used to playing with the incomparable Buddy Rich and at the highest level imaginable. A wonderfully precise, interesting and technically perfect solo on a smaller set to boot! Take a look at the great Steve Marcus(who has seen a few good drummers in his time, when Neil goes to the cow bells in his solo. Priceless.
)This is why Neil was one of the true giants of the industry and an all-time great drummer. We shan't see his like again.

I saw Rush 4 times in my youth. The last show was Moving Pictures tour like 1980 or so. At Maple Leaf Gardens. I even saw them in my hometown! Life happened but I am still a fan. I got Alex' autograph when I saw him at the Orbit Room.

Neil Peart was at the apex of drummers, so it's not surprising he would only play with similarly talented musicians, whether he was playing with Rush or this ensemble.

This was the performance he wasn't happy with, IIRC. He had practiced a different version of the song and didn't find out until he had arrived and as a result really wasn't happy which lead to the tribute album later...as a way to make amends. Seriously.
At least that's my recollection. I'm sure someone will fill in the details...

Unlike his RUSH sets, he is keeping this one traditional/classical.

Neil is such a monster, but he was way out of his element here (by his own admission). His left hand had all the finesse of jackhammer. Was far better after Freddie and Erkshine, but really his "jazz" technique was at its pinnacle right after Test For Echo.
Another difficulty he had was he had a chart he was given for the music, for some reason the chart was changed and he had no time to learn the changes for his comfort

So, it's become en vogue to say things like "Neil doesn't swing," or "Neil can't play jazz." This performance was a disappointment to Neil, so he commenced his voyage to develop a jazz drumming style with Gruber and Erskine. By the time he performed on the 2008 Burning for Buddy event, Neil proved he could swing and push the brass and especially on "Love For Sale." But, the green-eyed monster exists to this day, but my bet is that history will say, Neil was an accomplished jazz drummer in the end. RIP Prof!
