Bravado from the same album is another great one (as many have suggested) and The Pass from Presto is one of the band’s all time favorites (with a powerful message) For just a little more “funkiness” is still suggest and highly recommend Leave that thing alone from Counterparts. 🤘👍

I've been absolutely loving your Rush reaction videos. As a long-time fan of the band (since the late 1970s) I'm tickled by your responses. I do have my own recommendation for you -- something a little different. I like all the recommendations I've seen in the comments, but I really would like to see your reaction to another song from this album -- Bravado. • @aaronwillett2837
    @aaronwillett2837 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

To quote (paraphrasing) our legendary late brother Neil: "We've never said 'that doesn't suit Rush'. Those words have never been uttered"
Rush was always experimenting, always trying new things, always pushing themselves out of their own comfort zone. Roll the Bones is a great example of this. Great reaction as always, and my dude, you've reacted to every track from Moving Pictures EXCEPT for The Camera Eye! That may be the best on the album! Also, Jacob's Ladder from Permanent Waves!

Alex Lifeson doesn't get enough credit for being the core of emotion in most Rush songs. Geddy and Neil are widely lauded (and rightly so) for their abilities and contributions, but for me, Alex's guitar conveys the most feeling.

This album usually doesn't go to high on many Rush fans' list. It's around the top of my list. The lyrics are great in this album. The music is simpler, but has a groove to it. I've heard people say it's not their best work because of its simplicity. I just say, there's something great about a master of their instrument playing a simple groove. My favorite songs off the Roll the bones album. Roll the bones, dreamline, bravado, ghost of a chance, and neurotica.

I'm so glad you reacted to this song and that you enjoyed it. I hoped you would. As others commented, the rap voice was Geddy through a voice synthesizer. Pretty brilliant stuff. I was not very impressed by the Roll The Bones album when it came out. I felt it was a misstep coming off their incredible Presto album, which is a career highlight for them, in my opinion. Roll the Bones was an exploration of Postmodern philosophy, which I've never been a big fan of. But I've warmed up to the album over the decades and truly appreciate the hard-driving music, if not the lyrical theme. But Neil's writing skills really shine, as they always do.

    • @ischmidt
      @ischmidt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Presto is an incredible album, I feel that it's the best lyrics Neil ever wrote. I don't necessarily agree with the lyrics on RTB (although "Bravado" is on point), but for me the album where I try to tune out the lyrics is still Test For Echo. Ged and Alex are still writing at a high level on that record ("Virtuality" is Alex's best riff since "Limelight"), but I'd swear Neil was drunk.

Kind of the exact opposite of what I want from Rush. They should have dropped out the guitar and drums right there and laid down a magical musical interlude that they are so fantastic at.

Rush spanned the British invasion, Beatles, Stones, Sabbath, Zeppelin etc through Tool, Slipnot, System. Pretty much after Moving Pictures they embraced a lot of the 80s techno synthesizer style. While I stuck with them some didn't. Same with Van Halen 1984, Aerosmith Pump, ZZ Top Eliminator. Funny I still say "new" Van Halen 36 years later. Rush still made some fantastic music but...IMHO it really never was the same as that 74-82 window which is eternal. As an aside, Van Halen 2 and Women And Children First are as heavy and brought as nearly all but Sabbath and Metallica, maybe GNR Appetite. OG rockers know heavy is attitude not loudness.

💥THE GIRL WHO LISTENED TO RUSH💥
From the back of the stadium
    She’s easy to see
    Standing up at the stage
    In her Starman tee
    From Anthem to Limelight
    To YYZ
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    And all of the rockers
    And all of the heshers
Well they dreamed of the day
    That they might get her
    And drive her away
    In a Red Barchetta
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    Philosophers and ploughmen
    They can’t resist her call
    They cannot choose
    Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
    They've gotta love her
    No she doesn’t say "Pert"
    And she doesn’t say "Part"
Yeah, she knows it’s "Neil Peert"
‘Cause he’s close to her heart
Say a prayer for John Rutsey
He was there at the start
She’s the girl who listened to Rush
    Philosophers and ploughmen
    They can’t resist her call
    They cannot choose
    Not to decide
So they've got no choice at all
    They've gotta love her
Why don’t girls ever listen to Rush? (X a lot)
    But she listened to Rush!
    The blacksmith and the artist
    They can’t resist her call
    You cannot choose
    Not to decide
So you’ve got no choice at all
No you’ve got no choice at all
    You’ve gotta love her!

Heh, yeah, that was Geddy. During concerts, I remember him doing a lip-sync the first line or two as the video screen showed a skeleton doing the rap part. I think you'd really appreciate learning the themes of each album as you experience songs from them for the first time. I take it you never got to see them perform live? Video doesn't even come close to the actual FEEL of their shows (though the Rio tour gave a hint). Rush was truly a RUSH in person. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roll_the_Bones

  • @ehcmier
    @ehcmier 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

People are saying "processor"/"processed". There's pitch-shifting, and slowing the soundwaves' playback. Pitch-shifting allows real-time change. The slowed spoken voice on "Subdivisions" is another example. With sampling keyboards like the Fairlight, you can input a sound, and then play it back at different speeds pressing higher or lower keys than the one assigned as the "original". On tape machines, there's a dial for speeding up and slowing down the motors. You record while the speed is fast, and then return the setting to normal, and whatever was recorded at the fast speed is slowed.

Watching this reaction sent me back to late 1991 when I heard it for the first time the day the album dropped. Thanks for this!!
When asked about who did the rap part, no one would fess up to who actually performed it, but said they used a harmonizer to make them sound "bigger and blacker" than they were.(That was an quote from an interview in 1991 that I read in a guitar magazine, it was not intended then or now to be racist, if anything it was a slam on themselves for being three white guys from the suburbs of Toronto.) Whether or not Geddy came out later as being the one who performed it in the studio, I don't know. But I have heard fans speculate that it was him at shows in the years since. When performed live, not a single person is stood at a microphone even pretending to be performing it, as it is just a sequenced part that is triggered, likely by Neil.
