I like it, but I do get Geddy's comment that it was Neil's personal experience and it probably doesn't speak to us the way it did to Neil. Still, I think they did a great job evoking the atmosphere the lyrics describe.

"Beyond the Lighted Stage" is from 2010; this interview was 2012. I don't know how you can resist not seeing the Rush documentary. It's great!!
And don't judge the guys too harshly. They are wine aficionados, but they do consume quite a bit at times. When you watch the extra part of the documentary called "Dinner with Rush" they get tipsy and are funny!

Tai Shan may be the most un-Rush song ever recorded, but I didn't think it was that bad. Very atmospheric. That said, I need to shut up now because I'm in the shower and I'm VERY busy in the shower....

You need to react to Rash the real history of Rush episode two ( I don't think there is an episode one LOL ) to see these guys in one of their comedy skits and yes Neil is also in on the fun. Alex in a fat suit! As you can see by this interview and dinner with Rush these guys have a great sense of humour.

Wow. Even Geddy cringes at his poofy hair period (though I think the blue jumpsuit, red socks, and white shoes give it a run for its money). Geddy and Alex are both pretty funny on the Rush Beer commercials too. :)

I think Geddy using his words from the hall of fame speech: a good Jewish boy from Toronto. A class act always and very nice to his fans. These questions are from a dip shit interviewer. Basically junior high/ middle school questions. I’ve definitely seen better interviews with Geddy than this one!

  • @Joelster-og4pf

I so enjoyed this. It’s nice to hear Geddy Lee in these interviews. He has such a nice, cool and funny personality, on which I relate to very deeply.
    About Tai Shan….
this song has become kind of a Rush meme. It got infamous because Geddy and Alex said it was an error (on which Geddy obvs mentioned), which kinda meant us Rush fans do have a chance to dislike it. But Hold Your Fire is a cheesy album. But it’s not all bad cheese. It does have some genuine highlights on there. Trust me, the first two songs are outright bangers. Not as good as Power Windows in my opinion or Grace Under Pressure, but I’d still enjoy it overall.

They do drink a lot, but never during performances. Maybe in early 70s, but they have all said they learned early on that couldn't play their own music when drinking, or smoking green, lol.
There was an incident years ago with Alex and his son getting in a brawl at some hotel. That was probably 20 years ago though. I think the two of them might have even gone to jail but i am not 100% on that. It definitely made the news though.

they were in Florida at the Ritz Carlton (of all places) for New Year's Eve in 2003 and Alex and Justin (and Justin's wife, Michelle) did get arrested. Alex got tasered during the event too.
'Three deputies arrived and took Justin to a service hallway outside the ballroom to find out what happened. Alex and Justin's wife, Michelle, followed. The deputies eventually tried to escort Justin and Alex out of the hotel, but Justin resisted, leading deputies to tackle him to the ground and Taser him. When Alex tried to block Justin from harm, a deputy punched Alex in the face and broke his nose. He was also Tasered in the scuffle. All three Zivojinovichs - Justin, Alex and Michelle - were arrested and charged with resisting an officer, though the charge against Michelle was later dropped.
The Zivojinovichs sued the three deputies for use of excessive force, and accused the Ritz and Barner (hotel manager) of negligence.'

@@lewisbernstein4272 in a neil book he said the band never stayed at the hotel chain again. an interview with alex had him pointing out he was in his 50s and had never been in a fight so breaking his nose and tasering seems stupid to me. he of course wass polite and humorous and said the jail people had been nice.

Look no further than his version of “My Funny Valentine.” A good friend of mine once had the misfortune of playing a wedding (of all things) with him years ago. Great story.

This was not the greatest interview. The stuff from Beyond the Lighted Stage is very high quality. That’s an interesting choice to wait until you’ve finished the discography to watch it. Once you watch that and the Time Stand Still documentary, it will likely make you more of a fan. It’s just hard not to like these guys as people in addition to what they made together. Especially when you get into the Rush era when they started making hilarious intro and intermission videos for the live shows. You’d expect it to be very cheesy and bad attempts by a rock band attempting to do sketch comedy, but some of them are legit hilarious and made the shows so much fun.
