By now you know the story of how Geddy got his first Jazz bass?
Wandering around in Kalamazoo before a gig in the mid 70s he spotted a 1972 Jazz bass in a pawn shop and paid $200.
Do yourself a favor and buy the book. I had the good fortune to meet Geddy at an event that included a signed copy. It's a beautifully crafted and encyclopedic look at the instrument. Read it while your eyesight is still good-the type is a little small for my aging peepers.
Geddy is such a humble person
The giddy looks of unadulterated joy on your face throughout this video, especially when the question was "most tonally versatile bass"...that's happiness, man. I loved watching this.

I have the Bass Book, signed by Geddy. My friend Kim in Boston stood in line and had Geddy sign it for me.
You need the Big Beautiful Book Of Bass. And incredible coffee table book amazingly photographed and lots of tech stuff, geek stuff and great interviews with some really great and influential players. Pick it up. It's worth it.
Wonderful to hear the rush guys in any interview. So calm and well spoken. Love how he minimizes his talent when he talks about other bassists and their strengths.
I remember when you were reacting to one of the albums(songs) you kept saying "why isnt he using the jazz bass" etc, etc so when he said his favorite was the jazz bass I knew it would bring a smile to your face.
The book is beautiful and I got a autographed copy from the man himself when he did the book tour a few years ago.
On the book, Geddy wished he could have interviewed John Entwhistle of the Who if John would have still been alive. It's a really awesome book. There are basses in it that I never knew existed. And if course all of Geddy's basses.

You really should pick up the book. It’s amazing - from the photography, to the basses themselves, and the writing. Really a must have for bassists.

John Entwhistle of The Who was the other superstar bassist of that generation, Geddy wanted to sit down with. There are, as we all know, so many worthy of much praise. One contemporary that I’ve leaned into for years has been Dave LaRue. His logic while soloing has been remarkable throughout his career. Checkout the composition called “Cat Food” from The Dixie Dregs, “Bring em Back Live” LP. One of many high points from this artist. Enjoying the channel, and the choices. Regards

Very few can "Slappa da bass" like Geddy can. Check out Michael Manring please, world class bassist but under the radar in the main stream. If you do I'll tell you why my interest in him.
I used to listen to Michael Manring a lot. Really great player. Enormous Room, with all the insane tunings/changes. He's a great solo bassist.

@@JustinPanariello he currently uses a Sire Marcus Miller V bass 5 string (needed it for an Elvis show he played bass on for school theater). He just ordered a bass he’s wanted for a while and has been saving for. An Ibanez fretless semi-hollow body that can come close to an upright bass sound. We will see. Keep up the awesome reactions and post more stuff of you playing bass!

@@JustinPanariello nice! Just watched a video from him. The V7 is exactly what my son has. It’s slightly different as it’s the gen 2 model that’s been out only for a year or so. He loves it. I won’t get into his other basses he has it his guitar collection. It’s obscene. But still cheaper than if he played hockey. Lol.

Amazing!!! Still saving a few minutes for later. I grew up with an electric guitar perspective, then I put it down a while back. If I get back to playing I would be torn...guitar or bass. Probably bass, so much of my music journey is about Geddy's tone and composing. As a non bass player, I luckily guessed he would say Jazz bass. Hope to purchase the book.

Like all the guy's in Rush, intelligent and well spoken. Ha ha, don't agree on some of his choices for best players though, it's all opinion.

Hey thanks Justin! Got a question for you; I had an Alembic spoiler bass that I bought with paper route money back in 1984 (my dad, bless his heart, also sold his sax to help me pay for it). They were only 900.00 bones back then! It was my fav because of its medium scale length which suited my slightly smaller then average hands perfectly. Recently I've been wanting to purchase another 32' scale and unless you can afford a custom job, I've found that, aside from the cij Areodyne's..they all kind of suck. I almost got the Areodyne (sp?) but for one thing...it seemed the tone nob might as well have just been an on/off switch. It was like two choices and that's it! I'm not a tech guy but I've heard that they are difficult basses to mod however, yours looks modded and you even mentioned that you use the tone nob so I was hoping you could elaborate a bit? Was yours modded and what did you do? The pick ups don't look factory to me (maybe they are?)...did you have to route out the cavity to install?..ect. Anything you could tell me would be appreciated because I really liked the bass and the Japanese version is the only descent, name brand 32' that isn't weirded out in some way that I've found. Hey thanks for the questions, here's what I got...
First off yes I modded my Fender Aerodyne and did a video about the mods, here's the link --> th-cam.com/video/ZgOv8jP77Vk/w-d-xo.html
Second, the Fender Aerodyne is not a short scale. It's a regular 34 inch scale bass. I would never make any physical mods to a bass that would take wood/body material away. I replaced the pickups with ones that would fit.
In my opinion, the MIJ Fender Aerodyne is an excellent bass. It rivals my 1974 Fender Jazz Bass in many ways. In some ways it's even better (fewer dead high on the neck, much lighter). And its especially great for the money. I got mine for $700-$800 about 5 years ago. Obviously mod parts cost more. Overall an excellent pick.
