    Excellent interview except for that one question. LOL Neil loved the outdoors as well. He was an avid hiker along with cross country skiing and snowshoeing hence the hiking boots. I hear what he says about Moving Pictures but Hemispheres is still on top of my list as my favourite Rush album although it cost them as it took a great deal of time and effort to record. As for Alex, yes he is a goofball but when it comes to creating their music he was very serious. I think all of their personalities meshed very well. They balanced each other out. Alex has a chord named after him, he is also a pilot and an excellent painter. Both Geddy and Alex have large wine collections which started with them getting complimentary bottles. Alex went down to California to learn the whole wine making process. I must admit I have a soft spot for guitarists. LOL I think you would enjoy The Boys in Brazil documentary. Cheers and thanks for starting my morning with Rush.

    I don't think his comments about Moving Pictures is really an indictment of 2112, just that he felt the band hit its stride at that point, including his lyric writing...I mean, you could argue that Permanent Waves (which was the album out just before MP) was actually better...

  • @briantomczak21
    @briantomczak21 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    yeah primus opened for rush and i was at that show in chicago. the crowd was not really interested in hearing anything they did, there was this growing chant of rush rush rush, until mercifully it was over and the main attraction came on. april wine , rory gallagher, and max webster were the only bands to open for rush that pulled it off.

    He talked a lot about Clockwork Angels which was their last record. As you go through their catalog, you'll see how they start heavier then get more synth and then get back to more hard rock sounds....until Clockwork Angels which is probably their heaviest albums in my opinion. It actually took me a few listens to really get it but now it is one of my top 3 albums from them. And Geddy's bass on it is incredible.
    As for bass solos....my son had his first bass solo in his HS jazz band and was quite scared. He went with prepared solo rather than improvised and he nailed it. Such an underappreciated instrument outside of jazz music...but glad he is loving it.

  • @rickhaddad7261

    Conceptually, I agree about starting at Moving Pictures too. I think that's when the lyrics started to equal or surpass their instrumental talents, and became more real world. Sure it's not 100%, but I prefer their lyrical direction around the Moving Pictures time.
    You should check out Neil out playing Cotton Tail with a Buddy Rich tribute band. Pretty impressive for a "rock drummer"

  • @jeffvomero1242
    @jeffvomero1242 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love Moving Pictures. Most Rush fans do, but 2112 was the album that allowed Rush to have the freedom to make their kind of music. Agreed that 2112 for the time was huge, not many bands did concept albums during that era. Then they continued to record conceptual albums such as Hemispheres. Geddy said that they felt the band was getting burnt out and not taking care of themselves, so they moved away from the concept albums.
    Neil is a huge inspiration to many drummers. He really showed what hard work can do. But what really struck me was when he said that he may be considered one of the best drummers in the world, but there are so many other drummers that are considers the best and he cannot play what they play. I am paraphrasing of course but you can get what he is saying. Alex is the class clown, Geddy keeps the guys in perspective and Neil steers the ship. All three are just genuine human beings.

    P👂t peart . I used to always say pert. Until I heard him say it. It takes a humble man. Who many consider to be the best. To still go to a teacher and be open to learn. And people can be so closed minded. They determine what something is got to be. And if it doesn't fit those parameters then it's not good or cool or whatever they think it should be. It's like musical racism . You don't sound like what we think you should sound like so you aren't cool. Instead of just taking it for what it is and appreciating it. Like subdivisions be cool or be cast out. And I'm of the persuasion. The music is good or its not. All the rest is arbitrary. Judge the music by the content of its character. Not by the appearance of its player. That to me is why Rush is the best. Bcuz they made a whole career all the way to the hall of fame without fitting the mold of rock star.

    After the album" caress of Steel" the record label was ready to drop them because of poor sales. They didn't like the long concept songs so then they come out with 2112 because they wanted to do what they wanted to do and became a big hit.

    Thanks for another great reaction. I can confirm that Primus opened for Rush. I think it was for the Roll the Bones tour in Spokane, and it was my first exposure to Primus. I didn't like them. To be fair, that dislike was at least partially influenced by some fans who were clearly there ONLY for Primus and made complete a**es of themselves, while also disrespecting Rush. It was unfair of me to let that reflect on the band... but I still don't really care for their music.

      Yes that was the tour (maybe there were others?). I remember it well, because the show I saw was one of the few where Primus did NOT open and I was definitely disappointed (but not too disappointed--after all, I did see Rush).
      I did finally see Primus--a few weeks ago at the Warner Theater in DC, and it was a fantastic show. However, there always seem to be a few Primus fans who are just total a-holes.

    Not entirely accurate in your understanding. Neil has elaborated in other places merely as he believes Rush firmly had their own sound and identity, where the influences were not so clearly worn on the sleeve. That said 2112 the album and that side long track is some of the most creative and well executed heavy rock of that time period by any band. Sorry not your cup of tea, but that stuff, the story told so well lyrically and musically, was pure genius. They were like 25 or 26 when they wrote and recorded that stuff and for them, it was light years beyond any of their previous work.

    Neil Young said the same thing. If you don't leave it all on the stage, you're cheating the audience. Oh wow another Canadian. Neil's humility reminds me of Jimi Hendrix. Think what you want but 2112 is a masterpiece and it's important for then and now, almost like a Mozart piece. No music made now approaches it. Reading a book is cool, remember the part in the documentary where Neil is sitting in the empty stadium reading a book? He makes everything cool.

      y'all can argue all you want about 2112 being a masterpiece or "meh"... but really its going to mostly depend on what age you are and where your're at in life when you heard the album. I first got a hold of it when I was just entering high school, and it resonated perfectly for that time. So it always has a place for me I can't shake. But I can totally imagine listening to it for the first time now at age 46, and after already hearing a bunch of later Rush records, that I'd be more like Justin... "cool, pretty good songs and playing together for the 3 only being together for a little over a year" but I know I'd also chuckle at the fantasy and over the top compositional zig zags

      @@katskillz Yeah, also, we have to consider that this was Neil the ruthless self-critic. Yes, I can look at 2112 and see the short-comings of the material hat some guys in their early 20s created. OTOH, there are some real gems on that record that absolutely hold up to the test of time. While I understand Neil's criticism of the earlier albums, how many musicians were influenced by 2112 and A Farewell to Kings, etc.? I guarantee that it was a huge number--where would progressive metal even be today if those albums had never been released?

      Oooh but I will.. cause I'll be doing that whole record soon! Also idk why you are saying this. Is it cause of Neil's comment?!

    P-ear-t …like what you h-ear with …funny. I don’t think Neil ever cared either, or at least he hid it well.
