I just wanted to thank you for being deadly honest about not only the capabilities of the R1, but also the limitations and hazards of the bike. My son was one of those that wanted his R1 modified (exhaust, tune, tires, frame sliders, etc...). I have been a motorcycle rider all my life that started with dirt bikes. Due to 2 close near death experiences involving other drivers while driving my street bike when I was about 20, I have always encourage my boys (5) not to ride street bikes. The one thing that is rarely discussed is the stupidity of other drivers!! My son was riding his R1 when a stupid driver made a left hand turn in front of him while driving a motorhome. He had no place to go as there was a Fed. Marshal vehicle to his left. It was a 5 lane highway with a left turn center lane. My son was in the slow lane and everything was caught on dash-cam video. The marshal stated that my son was not horsing around what-so-ever but had the sun in his eyes and was in the Marshal's blind spot so he didn't see the motorhome make the turn until it was too late. My son didn't survive the impact! The marshal stated that the only reason that he was able to stop in time because he was able to read the other driver and determined that he wasn't going to stop or yield. I say all of this to say thank you for driving smart. I did see you hit 71 mph for about 3 sec, and you are right it is very hard not to hit the throttle on a R1. Those biles are really fun, but "generally speaking" it isn't the motorcycle rider that is the issue....it is the stupid drivers that don't look, don't care, and never think of the families that are destroyed. So....I would love to see a video that discusses the issue of stupid drivers, and how to protect us as motorcycle riders (special led lights that flash and warn drivers, defensive driving, and the proper gear). FYI, my son had ALL his gear on; Shoei carbon helmet, Dainese jacket and pants with the air vest, and gloves. He was a safe rider like most of you are! Mike
I'm very very sorry for your loss Mike...I've been on many bikes but there's nothing to compare to the crazy amount of power the sportbikes make, even the 600's are flat out waayyyy too much bike for most riders NOT riding on a closed course. I can understand and appreciate the good advice you gave to your boys.
@everyday tenor Thank you sir. If everyone did what we could to warn others, I think it would help. The problem is most riders think it will happen to "the other guy". Enjoy your bike and keep your head on a swivel!!

Nothing is worse coming into a corner too fast a d then realizing that the turn is decreasing in radius as you get further into it. You run out of skill really quick in that situation.
Started riding legally, at 16 , on a Yammy 350 2 stroke RD. Excellent handling, wheelies in second, maxed out speed and lean all the time, how I made it to 62 , and still riding every day, not sure. Still not enough highway for my 92 vmax, and all 3 cruisers, (2) 1800, and (1) 1900 cc v twins. Just got a 2004 vtx 1800 with Cobra pipes, way too much fun, faster than a lot of stuff on the road.
Mike Sokolow your not living in Los Angeles California that’s how, I’ve been riding since 2001 and I’ve had one major accident and 11 years later a slide with a car comíng out of a parking lot, bruised knee and toe and I still ride but Cali is so over populated and drivers are the worst. Pray every day I make it through another day and when I do I give thanks. It’s a Cali thing I guess. But motorcycling is the best thing in the world an addiction that stays with u till the end of your days on earth. Good luck out there and stay safe brother. God bless
@@whitehouse9999 Just saw this. Yea , my first bike was the 2 stroke 350, learned in D. C . Maryland, then moved to the mountains, at 16, rode tripping on acid, high in good weed and drunk. Never went down, just gotta stay aware.
Raise it back up! I've never owned a Yamaha. I own a CBR 1000rr, the handlebars make it an upright bike. Two weekends ago I bought an 06 R1, under 14K miles, perfect shape, $4,500. Front and rear jack stands included. Yes, it is fast, it wants to go fast, very true. Mine has adjustable suspension and the kickstand is adjustable, took me about 30 minutes to raise it back up, I"m a short guy too. About to take it out again here in a few minutes. I will NEVER give this bike full throttle, lmao.
I had a 2008 4C8 in dark grey (almost black) and gold. The most gorgeous bike ever. I did a tons of mods on it - changed sprockets to shorten gearing, took out AIS, put full exhaust on (MIVV), remapped it etc. How bloody misguided. In the end, I succeeded in making an already savage bike so brutal to ride in the street that it actually began to scare me. The bike laughed at my skills and my limits. Cruising on it was borderline unpleasant as it demanded a total hammering every ride. R1 basically rode me more than I rode it and I was always expecting to end up in court if coppers ever spotted me. All in all, it just became too much and I sold it. What a bike, though, what a gorgeous, amazing bike. Still miss it every day.
Still one of my all time favorite looking motorcycles! The Raven R1s from 2004 to 2008 are still stunning to this day and really look better than almost all of the current liter bikes.
I think the R1 looks better because it uses projector headlights. Most other bikes comes with reflector setup be it GSXR 1000, ZX-10R, S1000RR etc. The only other sportbike bike with projectors is MV Augusta F4RR I think.
Always wanted an R1. Had an 2002 R6 for a few years. Love this one for years but then heard the note of the +09 ones and thought they were just from a different planet. Wonder if people agree.
I agree, but for a different reason. Most R6 and R1 riders don't even have the capability to maximize the R3. They are straight line riders who have no idea how to handle a bike if they have trouble at high speed. Some idiots says begin riding on the R1 without understanding the bike can kill them because they don't know how to handle it. I started riding in the 1970s with much less power, but my bike could kill me so easily with the type of power it had. It could accelerate from 0-60 and back to zero in a short block. I had the opportunity to buy a big yammer, but chose the Triumph Sprint RS instead. Why? It was because the handling on the bike was so smooth, and so was the 955i engine.
I'm with you about the speed limit thing. Hopped on a 2004 Fireblade this morning and it literally felt like that bike was not comfortable going slow. And I wasn't either on that bike...
Got myself one about 3 weeks ago. Coming from a Blackbird it's quite the difference. It has low down power but prefers revs. What a machine from an era before electronics took over!
@@andysspiriteddrives You sit a bit more upright on the Bird. R1 has a lot more intake noise in acceleration. I found the R1 very uncomfortable on a 400km trip. Not really made for that but okay. 😂
great review Im getting a 2006 Yamaha R! I do like your opinion on this Bike ,besides not having gear selector ,it has no gas gauge ! amazing!!! but is a great looking bike !
It's called a gear indicator but you knew that already. I have an 02 that thinks it's a '20' and it's everything you said. Can't tell you how glad I am to hear this bike is being talked about. Not parting with my R1.. hoping to get rich when I sell it in another 20 years. Subscribed.
The only thing I don’t like about my 04 R1 is how much you have to twist the throttle to get up to 170mph. p.s - you don’t need a gear indicator, you can feel which gear you are in. I wish I could say the same for my 2012 on which I always check which gear I’m in because it’s hard to tell.
jose garza thanks 🙏. Our friend was only 22. Beautiful bike but the dopamine rush from those R1 speed blasts can be addictive. I wish you a long and happy life. Be safe.
Haha we aren’t the worst riders lol. I had an 05 r1 for a while. Now back to an2012 cbr1000rr. Loved the r1. 93 mph right at red line in first with a CALIBRATED speedometer. Only reason I went back to a cbr was because I’ve always preferred the smoothness of the cbr.
Still my favorite body style! I had the 05 that had smaller intake runners and jus 4 piston front brakes. It was a fun bike but man them fans in traffic sitting in 100 degree weather SUCKED haha. I enjoyed my 06 R6s more for traffic as i wasnt baked like a potato haha. Good video man and YES the gear indicator was very annoying NOT having one and all ur GSXR buddies constantly rip on that haha
ride a bike for 20+ years and by then your mind already knows which gear you are, everytime you move the clutch and your feet. The funny thing is, you can also tell which gear you are in just by how much rev and engine break the bike is doing when you close the throttle. veteran riders don't need to look where the gears are at, they can actually feel it.
Been riding r1's nearly everyday for nearly 20 years , I'm 54 soon (too -soon) but as soon as I close the visor I'm 25again ..for the last 11years it's the 04 and before that it was the 2001 last of the carburettor version and you sure can use it every day, I always pull into work with a big grin and just can't wait to finish work and climb back on her and the ride home is never long enough , rain or shine ( I'm in UK so it rains more than shines ) ...just be sensible and work Ur way up to a 1000cc then buy one and enjoy the ride !
Love the R1 look but I'm enjoying the hell out of my CBR500R as my first bike. Even get a kick out of cops, was that bike even running when you went by?
I have been riding Yamahas since I was a 3 year old yes my dad let me ride at 3 I don’t even remember learning how to ride a bike, swim, or shoot my dad taught me before I could remember so I have just always knew! Yea dad was awesome he was a wild man and a 2 tour Vietnam vet, great guy! Rip 😔
Had my 06 R1 about a year now, hit the redline light a few times, just leaving it in a lower gear, really just not enough highway out there for it on a regular basis. My 3 other bikes are getting a little jealous.
I've heard some people ask whether a litre bike can be a beginner bike and how to tell whether a bike is a beginner bike. My personal opinion on the subject is that if a bike hits highway speeds in 1st gear a beginner shouldn't be on it. Not to say a beginner can't ride it, they just shouldn't.
What's crazy is the early-mid 90s ninja 1100 and the 90s CBR 1100 blackbird is basically just as fast. They run 10 second quarter miles. I've had a couple blackbirds and they just pull and pull and are so smooth..and even comfortable.
SuperSport its only that bad, I like my 125. I think Americans don’t really know much at all about 125s, you guys only think of the grom but there are many more than that. They don’t sell them at all in the US though. It’s nice to appreciate the smaller bikes. My 125 can reach 83 mph which is more than enough for me. I live 15 minutes from the city and I’m pretty much only driving around town or the country a bit.
William Flynn I can respect that and I know of the 125’s excluding groms lmao I hope to visit/ live in Europe one day your guys bike style is soooo much better imo ps. (Husqvarna Nuda 900R was never brought to the states so I will be over there to buy one)
this explains why i hate it when people watch 650ib and think "oh thats easy" and "hes a good rider" but when you watch him when the 2020 s1krr came out to test drive on track and the man was taking a corner like it was his first time on a bike in his life, like there is this kid at my school who is afraid to drive a car but wants to get a r6 or a supermoto just so he can wheelie and look cool because he watched dankwheelie one time, its so annoying when people have the mindset of wanting a bike to look cool and go fast in a straight line instead of caring about the craft of riding. and im not saying you have to be the next Valentino rossi but atleast be able to keep up with the kid on the ninja 400 ripping it on the canyon.
The metaphor is “ fork in the road” Secondly the only reason for a gear indicator would be to keep you from shifting into 7th which most riders have tried numerous times (it doesn’t) exist, it doesn’t hurt the bike and the rest of shifting is all done by rev. Maybe if you tried to skip some gears down shifting you might “really wish” you had an gear indicator
So true I live in Allentown Pa. today is October -4- 2020 noon and a dude that runs with one of my friends killed him self about 2 weeks a go on route 22 west bound ..going towards his house Reading Pa. he was down here for group riding ..accident was about 2 min from where I work in Breinigsville Pa. about 15 min from my house in Allentown .. It was on that same bike R1 custom gold and black and give or take a year. Anyway that was exactly what happened to this guy lost control of the beast speed limit times 3 . had a classic open helmet and broke at impact but no matter what gear nothing could've saved him hit the guard rail too hard and you no the rest ..so yes indeed you surely know your stuff Mr SRK Cycle bro thanks for your bike lessons and Bible verses . you are I appreciated !!
I think its very worth mentioning that few of the older 1000s save for some carb'd models really don't have much pull up until they come on cam at 10k+ rpm depending on model so you have nothing happening nothing happening and then all a sudden its a massive rush of power as the bike hits peak torque and you most likely lose it as a first timer or beginner. So its a deceptive powerband that lulls you into a false sense of security thinking you can handle the bike when in reality on most rides you are not even tapping into the bike's actual potential. With newer 1000s like the GSXR 1000 and the S1000RR they have variable valve timing that has them hit higher torque lower down which make them more fun around town but is also a bit of a no no for newer riders.
There's two sets of throttle plates that block my 14 and I was always hitting the rev limiter while stock, removed the secondary throttle plates and the bike transformed.
mine is a daily ride since new. they're fine on the road. even TAME. - maybe NOT with the forks dropped 1.5" through the tree and the preload bottomed out; that will make it super twitchy. i hade mine 0.5" through for the track and it sharpened it up a bit too much for the road. i haven't moved them back out; but I maxed in the preload to bring it back up (until i could be bothered) and it's pretty settled again.
I daily my r1 heavy traffic, open freeways and mountain rides on the weekends love the bike. some say the rotor/stator is a weak point I say its a big barganing chip if your mechanically inclined I got my 07 r1 for 2k w/ 10k mi because of that reason
Had mine for a year now, i mean its alright. It has nothing on new bikes in terms of power. pretty comfortable. Kinda stops wheeling after the top of first gear.
Yep, I'd much rather be pushing a cruiser hard down a twisty road than a sport bike at 4/10ths of its capability. Sport bikes are boring and uncomfortable to ride on the street. The track is a whole different story, would love to have one as a second or third bike to go run track days with. For my daily rider? No way.
@Man Dingo I did. You can't approach their limits on the street. Pushing a bike at less than half its capability is boring. I'd rather take a 650 metric cruiser out, and grind some foot pegs. Riding a slower bike at 8/10ths is so much more exciting than riding a super fast bike at 3 or 4/10ths.
USMC Vet I respect that, but that’s why bike like the duke 390, r3 and Ninja 400 are so big nowadays, they can be used to more of their potential on the street while still being a great track toy, so I’ve heard. I’m debating an r3 or smaller metric for my first bike tho
@@agentinforms9068 I hear ya, but they're still uncomfortable for anything more than a short ride. I mean anyone can buy whatever they want, if cruising around on a sport bike makes them happy, awesome. I just think some people completely overlook a lot of great bikes that would actually fit the type of riding they do better, and label them as a slow bike. If a guy loves to do track days, and can only afford one bike, then a sport bike makes sense. I'd say 90% of the guys riding sport bikes out on the roads have never done a track day and probably never will, they just think having a fast bike makes them 'cool'. Either of those bikes would be a good first bike. I have a HD Road King, and a VStar 650. I can definitely vouch for the smaller metric bikes, they're a blast. If you are going to actually do track days the R3 would probably be better for you, but if not I think a cruiser or a naked bike would serve you better.
@@usmcvet0313 Definitely agree! Pushing smaller bikes to the limit is more fun than babying a bike all the time. I have an R6 and it's rather boring to ride because of that reason - pushing it on the street is highly illegal. I bought an XSR700 and have way more fun on that than the R6 on the street. Way more comfortable to ride all day, handles great all around with low end power that's key on the streets. The only place is suffers is long straight highway rides which is my least favorite type of riding. I'm keeping the R6 as a track bike where it thrives.
I have one of these in the blue and white, and you a totally right about this bike. they really are deceptively fast especially when you get used to the power. If your not constantly looking at the speedo your over the speed limit constantly. They dont really like going round at sub 4k but if you they get to 5k they wanna start going again and the power doesnt proply kick in till 10k. Definitely very difficult to ride on the street
youre killin me brah. Hold it at 9-10k and use the clutch to keep the front end down. I did a best of 6.71 in the 1/8 with my stock 07' R1. I think the MPH was like 121.

I've got an 08 fz1 with an ecu flash and full exhaust and yea it's not an R1 but it's not far from it. It's my first liter bike and the fastest bike I've owned, it's a blast to drive.
yeah, R6 does the same thing,, fast fast fast, but i also have aftermarket exhaust, power commander, upgraded sprocket/chain GPR stabilizer, upgraded to steel break lines
You can get these so cheap. Got mine for $3800. Even already had all the popular mods done. Full exhaust, PC3 & QS, Vortex Levers and rear sets, servo delete, gear indicator, speedo heal for sprocket, stainless lines F&R, integrated brake & turn lights, I mean literally everything. Keep your eye out for them because they are a huge bargain, and incredibly fun.
Just know if it hasn't been updated to the newer version of the incredibly flawed stator, budget in $500 right away and just do it. Fishing out magnets that have been ground to dust and dumped into the oil is a nightmare. Thank God for modern oil filters saving the engine.
Stick to 600cc. They are fast up to 100 but you won't have to worry about going deadly fast as much. You can definately get overconfident going in a straight line and never learn how to corner properly so you do have to be careful. Good advice.
I disagree with the modification statement. You implied that if you’re not a racer you’re doing it to impress people. I like the way an aftermarket exhaust sounds. I do that for my benefit.

I learned to ride on a yamaha r6. The first bike i ever swung a leg over. So Yamahas are special to me for that reason. However guys that ride r1s do tend to be reckless lol.
@Blaine Arnold Thanks Blaine!! God Bless
So sorry buddy. So sorry for your loss.
@@1Klus Thank you sir! I have no words, almost 2 yrs and my other children still hurt. Justice system can be so worthless at times. Love the way you put little notifications in your videos like test drive here or 0-60 at 9:21. Makes me actually commit to watching the entire video because of your commitment to helping us find the info we need!
Very diplomatic way of saying the undertail exhaust is hot... lol. My 2009 R1 is like that too to some extent.
I had to sell my 09 R1 because that heat was unbearable.
Daww, that's too bad. The sound of the engine is too good for me to let go. It's my favorite thing about the bike.
Tbf my akras never get my bum hot on my 2013 r1. 😅
Nothing is worse coming into a corner too fast a d then realizing that the turn is decreasing in radius as you get further into it. You run out of skill really quick in that situation.
When that happens i just pray there isnt onvoming traffic
Have you given it full throttle yet?
Get old like me. I’m 34 and have zero issues taking it easy on my gsxr1000. I pass up races all the time.
I'm 33. R1 rider. I never take it easy. And never pass up on a friendly race. Still never wrote it off, crashed it, dropped it etc. 🤭👌🏼
Then again i do ride an MV agusta rivale also. 🤷🏽♂
58 and ride my 09 R1 everyday.
Great climate here in Qld Australia.
Love it.
@@kdotroy1 I guess it’s brains to go fast and not die and partially luck. Cuz we have all had our close calls.
Did u have ABS ?
No, dont like. They are limited in the 1. 3 gears, my R 1 RN04 is not because carbs ...
There's no taming the R1 my man. Its just impossible. It tames you

Wait...there's a such thing a speed limit signs?
I'm 6'2" and find my '10 big bang very comfy on 160km rides. The fuel consumption not so much.
Crazy how well these things hold their value, just picked up this same bike for $6k in 2024. Absolutely love it!

Yameehawww lol

Thank u for the comment..I don't know much about bikes and a beginner rider and was thinking of getting a used r1 just because I could afford it.
Those years had a 17T front sprocket from the factory. Putting a 15T sprocket on makes that R1 really fun
I'm with you about the speed limit thing.
Hopped on a 2004 Fireblade this morning and it literally felt like that bike was not comfortable going slow.
And I wasn't either on that bike...

You can get that on a 600 too though.
R1s are beautiful apart from the headlights on the 2009 when it went down hill
But now they are amazing especially 2020 version 👅
Got myself one about 3 weeks ago. Coming from a Blackbird it's quite the difference. It has low down power but prefers revs. What a machine from an era before electronics took over!
Tell a bit more on how the R1 compares to a Blackbird please?

Sold mo '07 R1 the other day. Was a great bike. Loved commuting on it. Power and balance were excellent.
It's called a gear indicator but you knew that already. I have an 02 that thinks it's a '20' and it's everything you said. Can't tell you how glad I am to hear this bike is being talked about. Not parting with my R1.. hoping to get rich when I sell it in another 20 years. Subscribed.

As someone with 2 R1s in the shed, we are the worst.... at being the worst. Because we're the best
Same here...Have the same bike I can’t tell after 3rd gear!! Have to look down
you are 100%right about that bike!!! last night I filled out the loan for the R1.

08 with power commander V, two brothers exhaust. Adding quick shift module and changing to GP shift soon. Putting in a new clutch this winter.
Hard to get top performance/ 0 to 60, on the road. Always a cop around for me.

Still have my 1999 r1 never gave me problems, have it for almost 20 years now
Still my favorite body style! I had the 05 that had smaller intake runners and jus 4 piston front brakes. It was a fun bike but man them fans in traffic sitting in 100 degree weather SUCKED haha. I enjoyed my 06 R6s more for traffic as i wasnt baked like a potato haha. Good video man and YES the gear indicator was very annoying NOT having one and all ur GSXR buddies constantly rip on that haha
cant imagine how hot yours get, but my r3 bakes me well, and yes the fan is loud
As soon as I saw him doing the 0-60 I knew what he was doing, I said “he doesn’t wanna wheelie that shit😉
The reason that it doesn't have a factory gear indicator is that it doesn't need one. As long as its in a gear it will go. 😋
ride a bike for 20+ years and by then your mind already knows which gear you are, everytime you move the clutch and your feet. The funny thing is, you can also tell which gear you are in just by how much rev and engine break the bike is doing when you close the throttle. veteran riders don't need to look where the gears are at, they can actually feel it.
Sorry but she ain’t trying to take off in 5th or 6th gear...Don’t ask me how I know 😒Mine came equipped with a gear selector
My first motorcycle I own and learn on and first owner is a 2001 R1 champion edition and I still enjoy it till now.

This stuff goes for any sport bike. You can lose it on a 600 just as easy. 80mph in a turn is 80 mph. Either you can ride or you can’t.
I love how the whole movie this guy is trying to say how awful the bike is, but is so enjoying this ride

I have an 09, ❤️ my crossplane. The only thing I don't like is how hot it can get in the middle of summer. 🤷🏻♂️
Just bought a yzf r125 :) Now all i gotta do is finish getting my liscence and yeh, im from europe
Nice I got my gsx-s125 in May I’m only 17 and live in Europe too
I feel bad for you guys, we could literally buy any type of bike and ride it the same day in America 😢
Great fun got one myself, just wish it was a little faster
this explains why i hate it when people watch 650ib and think "oh thats easy" and "hes a good rider" but when you watch him when the 2020 s1krr came out to test drive on track and the man was taking a corner like it was his first time on a bike in his life, like there is this kid at my school who is afraid to drive a car but wants to get a r6 or a supermoto just so he can wheelie and look cool because he watched dankwheelie one time, its so annoying when people have the mindset of wanting a bike to look cool and go fast in a straight line instead of caring about the craft of riding. and im not saying you have to be the next Valentino rossi but atleast be able to keep up with the kid on the ninja 400 ripping it on the canyon.
I had the exact same bike back in my mid 20s. I am 41 now and hopefully I can get back to riding one day
the freedom of 'merica, but with speedlimit everywhere 😁.
Greetings from germany 😉
Just picked up an 06 r1. Blip, over 100 in no time.
I'm not even kidding I was typing a comment about ducatistas before you even mentioned them
I get that feel when the bike is whispering you by the ear "go on boi, we deviling this hell" heeeeheeee!
I had an R6 now i have a little ninja 300 🤷♂️ kinda went backwards from my original intent of an R1
I need to come teach u how to launch lol. Another great video Brother. Did u see the Honda Rune I sent u
@@usmcvet0313
Definitely agree!
@@RamboRob you have the right idea! Both awesome bikes for their purpose. I'm saving up for an Indian FTR1200, but I also love the XSR bikes.
Definitely very difficult to ride on the street

yeah, R6 does the same thing,, fast fast fast, but i also have aftermarket exhaust, power commander, upgraded sprocket/chain GPR stabilizer,
upgraded to steel break lines
I know a lot of guys have Busas as first bike, but only when they have self control. Same with the R1 self control.
R1 sits lower then the R6. I just got an R1 and it’s much lower then my R6. I prefer the R1, it feels lighter for some reason. Easier to ride.
Definitely FAR heavier then a R6! My R1 is super heavy
I'm on my 8th Yamaha supersports, currently my 2nd R1, what does this make me ?
Stick to 600cc. They are fast up to 100 but you won't have to worry about going deadly fast as much. You can definately get overconfident going in a straight line and never learn how to corner properly so you do have to be careful. Good advice.
I disagree with the modification statement. You implied that if you’re not a racer you’re doing it to impress people. I like the way an aftermarket exhaust sounds. I do that for my benefit.

I liked just for the dedication
I liked it until you hit the honda button at the end. What a shame.
I can get there in
I learned to ride on a yamaha r6. The first bike i ever swung a leg over. So Yamahas are special to me for that reason. However guys that ride r1s do tend to be reckless lol. I have seen it for myself. I rode with an r1 guy back in the day. He upgraded from an r6 to an r1 after wrecking his r6. And he was allergic to riding gear. This guy used to ride in flip flops and swim trunks, and he would ride like an absolute maniac through traffic. I think the bike was more of a status symbol of being a badass and a rebel than anything else. Me personally i ride safely and wear all my gear. But riding is still loads of fun. No need to make it more dangerous than it already is.
