Was in the market for a new R1 in 2009. But the first year of the cross plane didn't tickle my pickle. So instead I bought a leftover new 2008 that was heavily discounted. Great bike!!
@@stephencarbajal5657the Yamaha R1 changed from flat plane engine to cross plane engine in 2009. In 2012 they changed the front (cosmetic) and added TC. Anyway, how did you get on with your 2012 R1? Do you still have it?

Thank you for the trip down memory lane!!!....... yep, some great machines we had in these days, it seems that they were more affordable than nowadays, simpler & more fun perhaps ??...hahaha, perhaps it is nostalgia...🤫 bonsoir manne, keep up the good work!
I disagree with you about the looks. Here in the UK and in Europe this bug eyed as we call it was extremely popular. Some, myself included, consider it to be the prettiest R1 ever especially in the stealth grey paint.

Of all the bikes you mentioned, they are actually affordable except one: the Honda SP1 / SP2. At least here in Spain. And yes, as a proud owner of a TL 1000 R, I was nearly shouting at my laptop screen…until you mentioned the TL family. Thanks for that and thanks for your always worth it videos.
Nice video and thanks for the memories as I’ve owned each and every single bike you have mentioned when they were brand new. I also had the same first liquid cooled GSXR-750 (also ended up racing one) and purchased a Fireblade foot the road. I was also glad to have gotten to know the “go show” AKA Anthony Gobert as I raced against him in the Australian 250 cc production class (when he became Australian champion in that category). As Phillip Island was my home race track I was also fortunate to see and be on track when he won his first ever WSB race (I was still in the 250 class) so I got to watch his race from on top of the pit bays, where you can actually see 85% of the track. Thanks for bringing back those memories. The 916 was actually a hot and difficult bike to ride with any confidence so I didn’t keep my new one of those for long. Still a great looking bike even today. On that note I was also 200 metres behind Foggy when he had his famous crash at PI, in a spot on the track that I’m still yet to see another rider come off. 👍😎🇦🇺
Awesome summary thanks Guys! I’m quite young at just over 30 so my experience with bikes isn’t that well. I’m not a fan of 1000cc Machines. Can you do the same with the Yamaha R6 for us please I prefer that model 😎🤓
at 7:16 i began getting green vibes while listening to those qualities 😂😂 coz even I've bookmarked a couple of them on OLX India right now 😎😎 that particular bike is a masterpiece.... 🥰🥰
The trick probably is to find the garage queen the previous owner(s) DIDNT try to improve in various ways or if they did at least hung on to all the original bits and didnt cut and drill stuff. The sad thing there is there really are some well deserved improvements but you would just rather find bone stock with low miles if collecting is in mind
I think your list is mostly the same as mine: ZXR750J or P models (double ducts or the 96+ version, which is named ZX7R in EU) FIreblade from 96 (with the shark gills on the butt) SRAD bumblebee GSXR '09 R1 VRT SP1 & 2 RSV Mille First gen zx6r Duc 748
just sold my 03 RSV Mille sadly, had #22 ever made that year and got it two years ago with only 1,100 miles lol it had 20.5k miles on it and i will buy a R Version later in life i promise you that!
I have the 09 Rossi and it's a bullet. Yours is missing the titanium/carbon fibre akra system, gold levers and bar ends, might be a UK thing? The Aussie one I have is way too fast. 😂
Just sold my 03 Aprilia RSV MILLE 😭, I will miss that bike dearly as it was my 2nd motorcycle I ever bought🔥 if you can find one…BUY IT! It’s heavier than a 916/996/998 but the dash setup and reliability for a rotax Vtwin is unbeatable (Modern Classic indeed!) his name is Toprak 🤦🏾♂️ shouldn’t be riding a Yamaha if you don’t know who he is smfh…
if only ktm still made the RC8 but in different engine displacements from 990cc-1301cc, ducati would spit out there coffee and cigarette smoke in an instant lmao.

The 2009 R1 is the worst R1 for me. Fueling was great in the upper rev range, but terrible lurching low down. Also let down with a too soft front end when going hard in the twisties. Still have a scar on my nose from from a '98 Fireblade - great bike though.😂 I had the 2006 wheelbarrow ZX10R - liked it on the road - terrible on track. Great review of a true classic .. but Does that mean a CBR1000 painted in Márquez colours would be that much better .. seeing he beat Rossi 58 times to Rossi’s 10 in their head to heads. but the Cross plane motors are deceiving just like all the MT series.
Well seeing that Marquez has done nowhere near as much for the sport itself and was in his prime when racing a Rossi well near the end of his much longer career. Probably not lmao. I like Marquez too but that’s a ridiculous comparison 😂

The Honda 954 Fireblade, was one of my favourite bikes from a few years back.
Scalpel sharp and as light as a 600cc sports bike
One of the best power to weight ratio motorcycles ever made, fun fact the guy who made the 929 & 954 crashed every test bike he rode 😂
Was a good road bike too. Not just a track weapon.
Nice bike, rode one, once, however, the 98 R1 blew the Fireblade, away.
Can’t find em here in Australia.

The K5 and K6 GSX-R1000 should not have been omitted from this list.

Right
K5 the real beast !!!
My fav was the updated R1 in 2012. I've owned 3 of them. Crossplane is the best. But honestly you can't go wrong with any R1

What a brilliant video, i love listening to Mat talking about old bikes, i have almost the same taste to them old bikes.
This is an excellent dissertation. Excellent ! R1-05. Previously 98 R1. 04, 05, 06 Remain the lightest R1s.
