Thanks to the Decompilation project by Rubberduckycooly & co. Which also enables some crazy mod support because we have a version of the game with SOURCE CODE. It ain’t just for ports, this is a new era of Mania modding.
My first Sonic game was Mania, and at first, since I had never played a Sonic game, it was kind of overwhelming to the point where I dropped the game for a while. However, I picked it up again about two weeks later and was amazed by how good and smooth it felt to go fast in a 2D platformer as soon as you get used to the gameplay. I fell in love with its vibrant colors, beautiful art style and mindblowing music. Oh, and when I played it again once I had beaten all four classic Sonic games and got all the references, that took the game to another level.
both the "get good" and "game over at boss fight" bits are both valid IMO because as mentioned in the video it is a bit annoying to go through the entire zone again JUST to get another shot at the boss. its understandable but a part of me feels like the get good option outweighs the other argument. I believe these Classic Sonic games were designed to played over and over and over again. and the more you play it. The Better you get at the game. Thats why most of these levels need memorization to successfully dash through them. If you kow where everything is and where every shortcut is then you know just about how to get there and finish the zone. Past Classic Sonic games kinda struggle with the pacing on certain zones (where you wait for an opening to get past your obstacle aka: Spring Yard Zone, Metropolis Zone and Flying Battery Zone) which is why Sonic Manias level design is SOOO GOOD. the past games mostly focused on Platforming or exploration and speed. This game takes a bit of everything from those games and Balances everything. Thats why some zones feel like a totally joy to your thumbs. If you're familiar with Sonics physics then you can use that to build momentum and jump off of slopes to gain more speed. or off of curves to get a super jump. All thanks to the retro engine giving accurate sonic pinball physics. Just like the originals. god I really love this game oh and rings were designed to give sonic an extra hit anyway. Just case if you didn't have the shield active
I remember seeing this game on a magazine or smth as an upcoming game, and it looked really cool to me. So I asked my mom if we could get it when it came out and she said yes. When the day came and I finally got it, it was so cool seeing the title screen light up and knowing that I would finally get to play this game. Got all the chaos emeralds and needless to say, this is my most replayed sonic game, by a big margin.

Also, I wasn't aware you could charge a spindash by pressing it multiple times, which meant I got stuck on tall ledges a lot. I also got stuck at Stardust Speedway act 1 for a while, as I was unaware that you could spindash those wheels. None of my gameovers felt unfair, though, since I spent time in the special stages and got a few continues. Also, the sprite from 8:09 is from the DA Garden in Sonic CD

As someone who wasn't a Sonic fan when Mania came out, I gotta say, the game is really good even without those nostalgia goggles. Mania was my first proper Sonic game (I had Advance 3 when I was a kid but I didn't really play it cuz I was focused on Pokemon). The game gave me a bit of trouble in the later stages, but learning the levels and mechanics was probably the most fun part of the game for me, and learning the references after the playthrough made me wanna play the older games too! Mania is probably the most friendly introductory game in the series, especially for 2D Sonic.
I had this game I got it for free on ps4 and I wasn’t good at sonic all I had was the collection for DS and never made it past the first level but for sonic mania I beat the first act but then forgot about the game. I came back around 2 weeks ago and it’s amazing but I just used debug mode to get past flying battery zone two which is way to hard for it only being the 4th level

Then later on i figured out mania was released in 2017 (first i thought it was a 90s game lol) and also got sonic forces. I figured out the games were connected and started playing mania more. The only sonic games that i have that top mania are sa1 and sa2, and not by much, too!

Lol honestly when I first played this game I didn't even know what the drop dash was, I only learned it by accidentally doing it enough times to catch on. Before playing this game I think the only sonic games I played were the classic mobile ports and... Sonic 4 episode 2, being my first sonic game.
Because it's made by passionate long-time fans of the series. Ones that have a general *IDEA* on knowing what to deliver to restore hope in the franchise for fans who've been growing cynical of SEGA for having Sonic Team rushing out games and limiting their potential with their stupid mandates. Yes, I know I sound like one of those aforementioned fans, but when you're hit with mediocrity after mediocrity for so long, it does stuff to you, man. For the past few years, I was convinced the only quality Sonic content to expect were from fan projects and the movies. However, as of last year, I've slowly become less obnoxious about my views on SEGA handling the franchise as, while I'm absolutely terrible at the game and haven't even reached the first boss yet, I'm happy for those enjoying Frontiers, and Superstars is looking very promising with having the classic physics intact and some amazing deep-cut fanservice with bringing back characters not seen for more than 20 years.

Personally I find being kicked all the way back two zones for a game over is unfair and not just a skill issue. I’ve gotten much better at the game now but how long does a zone take to finish if you’re new and playing casually? About 5 minutes? That’s a 10 minute punishment for not knowing level layouts for lives and some bosses have kinda annoying gimmicks. I love this game but it definitely should’ve just been one zone that you get kicked back and not both, and someone could argue that being kicked back to the start of a sonic game is perfectly reasonable because they’re a more patient person. I mean I don’t say it’s a skill issue if you get annoyed by the ghosts in sandopolis yet it is technically testing your skills.
People keep saying mania is a fan game, but the production was assisted by sonic team big wigs like takashi izuka and been hired for ports, it's far from it!
To me Sega Forever ruined Sonic 1 2 and CD by having WAY too many ads and I hate it because there are many fans who want to play for free or cheap but have to deal with an ad every time when they do one of these: Click the play button to go to save select Pause Resume Finish an Act WAY TOO MANY ADS sega kinda ruined it for me I got sonic 1 and now I deal with ads :/
These releases have the option to purchase the disabling of ads, so it is still a good way to get them for cheap(and without any major issues unlike the Origins-port)

Yeah just wished it ran better on vita…tends to crash often….I mean I have it on switch and ps4 but something about the vita version is so appealing
