- This remaster was rough on release to say the least. But there's been a few updates since it's release, so I decided to make a review and give my thoughts on the current state of the game!

It may seem like a good remaster, but the first impression is the most important thing, and sega fucked it up, twice now with origins.
I don't think Origins is in nearly as bad of a state as Colours Ultimate was when it released, but I agree it's a real shame that they weren't as polished as they've should've been.
this isnt totally sega's fault. they had a different studio do the remaster and gave them all the tools necessary. They could modify cutscenes, what did they do? They just upscaled them. And much more
@@suprcolbilibiliboing I'm not willing to give SEGA the benefit of the doubt here, as they've been pretty bad with these things in the past and future. They screwed over Big Red Button with Sonic Boom, rushed Origins out the door, and likely rushed this game too. Heck, they even screwed themselves with Sonic 06, rushing that out too.
@@suprcolbilibiliboing Sega has a long track record of fucking with both Sonic Team and just with development in general.
Adventure 1/2, most of the classic games, Heroes and a bunch of others were made on super tight schedules and crunched to shit. Sonic Boom infamously was looking pretty solid, and then Sega came in and throttled them with Wii U exclusivity and forcing them to change a bunch of things with no schedule change. And we know Origins had the same issues.
I think it's much more fair to assume Sega gave the remaster studio next to no time and likely a very small budget to remaster it than the Devs just being incompetent (considering they worked on the Mass Effect remasters which were pretty solid, I'd wager it's just Sega being Sega).
And the worst thing is, three of the four remasters were good on release because they were just ports of the mobile, or, in the case of sonic cd, console remasters by Christian whitehead, and are considered the definitive way to play said games

Great video! I feel like Sonic Colors Ultimate does have great enhancements which can make it a better version for some, but I just can't ignore the issues it brings. Glad to see that some people can enjoy it, though, with or without mods. I just wish it really was the "ultimate" version of Sonic Colors.
Personally I still think it’s a good remaster just for the fact that it’s put Colors into the hands of so many new fans from the movie which is the reason it was made. I wish the launch would’ve been ALOT smoother as that is the main thing everyone remembers but as it stands I’m glad we have Ultimate. This was a really good review and I’m happy to find more reviews of people being very fair on both sides talking about the positives and negatives. Keep up the good work
That’s not what a good remaster means it’s not automatically a good remaster just because it allowed tons of people to play the original game if they remastered the original game in a terrible way that’s basically what sonic colors ultimate is like
I think most people still own a Wii, so they could still get the game on Wii, and for pretty cheap too, second hand.

When i first saw the Metal Sonic race footage for this game, my mind just pictured him being Super Sonic with a Metal Sonic skin because of the animations.
Ever since then, I can't stop thinking about it when I see Colors Ultimate. And I don't even know if that's an accurate thought.

For a lot of newcomers to the game I think they can still enjoy the ultimate version. Not everyone has a PC or Wii on hand to emulate or play the original. Ultimate is flawed but it's much more accessible for majority of people which is good. I think there's enjoyment to be found in it and I do appreciate some of the visual upgrades as I felt the wii version lacked detail.
Starlight Carnival had a change in version 3.0. Originally Act 4 would play Act 2's song. But if you set the toggle to just the remixes, Act 4 plays Act 3's song
But it doesn't if you chose the Ultimate music mix. Also, even though they added the option to toggle the original music in version 3.0, Phase 2 of the Nega-Wisp Armor, Terminal Velocity Act 2 and Super Sonic still play the remixes, and the drill wisp still plays the Lost World versions of it's music
This game was my childhood other than bo1 and bo2 along with call of duty, advanced warfare, but if any of those games got toxic I would hop straight on sonic colors.
I’m one of the only people that actually enjoyed this game despite of it’s problems. My favorite things about this game is the fact that I can play it on the go on Nintendo Switch, has mod support on PC and it also has a customization system which was fun to use.

I personally don't think it's a good remaster. For one the game launched extremely buggy and even now it still has tons of bugs that negatively effect the game. The original released on Wii, with no ability to update, and had very few bugs at all. Then there's the visuals, which in my opinion, are a downgrade from the original. Yes a lot of the updates to models are nice but the one thing that was the biggest miss is the lighting. Too much bloom, washed out colors, often times looks flat, and missing a lot of more modern lighting features that could have been easily added to really help improve the visuals without taking away what the original did right on Wii. The remixed music can be hit or miss at times. I love all the Jun Senoue remixes but some of Tomoyo Ohtani's remixes leave me wishing to just listen to the original pieces. The cutscenes do look terrible and at times I wish they had just used the original Wii files that have none of the artifacts of bad AI upscaling. Sure they are low resolution but at least everything looks correct. Mods shouldn't be there to make a game good, they should enhance an already good experience to whatever the user likes. The game still needs a ton of work which is unacceptable for a game to release like this. The game likely needed additional work and I'm not sure if Sega rushed the game, preventing good work from being done, or blind squirrel just didn't know what they were doing or the game was particularly difficult to port and then add in new features.
Sonic Colors on Dolphin has an AR code that allows you to run it at 60fps, which allows you to enjoy the original art style at 1080p/4K with 60fps. It's how I- a friend of mine, plays the game.
They took planet wisp, and dubstepped it.
You can change to the original soundtrack now.

*IF* the game had all it's problems fixed, then yes, absolutely worthy. If that ever happened than buy it immediately.
In it's current state I'm disappointed especially with no more updates. This game still in 2022 is a tragedy even for hardcore fans with the endless problems that still plague it.
However, if you ever manage to tolerate it enough the game is extremely fun and some of the new visual changes are fantastic. Also I have to give the remix soundtrack huge props for some absolute bangers and my love for it extends further for adding a new feel to the game. Going in I hoped it delivered a brand new experience for those who wanted a good change of pace and it was extremely great to say it met my expectations. I enjoy the changes a LOT and it brought a new charm to the game. Now all I ever ask is just a simple beg beg beg I'm begging everyone who worked on the game please PLEASE give the game one more update and maybe finally give everyone a fixed remaster that deserves a chance and doesn't lose it's appeal 10 minutes in with all the bugs and glitches that tarnish it.

That was my first Sonic game, I was terrible so I couldn’t get past the first boss tho. I still prefer the wii version over the DS one. I love both of them regardless

I can handle your opinion. I love Sonic Colors Ultimate because I love how they remastered one of my favorite Sonic games, Sonic Colors. I have the Switch Version (which is the glitchiest version) and beat the whole game. I also really love how it added the Jade Wisp in there. I love the Jade Wisp as well as the other Wisps! They're so adorable!!! I love Sonic Colors Ultimate!

( if ya don't get it, I mean that I looked at the thumbnail which says, is sonic colors ultimate a good remaster? and even though I got it on the switch and the only glitches I experienced was loading into a stage and sonics modle isn't there specifically in starlight carnival I also don't know what act I don't remember, otherwise than the game was pretty fine, also im sick and tired of people saying the game is gona be bad cuz its 30 fps, I know that you have played other 30 fps games and had NO problem, so what's wrong now its the same frame rate you enjoy just a different character you play as and a knew story , AND the original game was 30-40 fps so what's wrong with it being 30 fps for a remastered version ding dong, anyways as I was saying, the game is perfectly ok besides the epilepsy, but with that aside the game is perfectly fine and there is no reason to not like it, AAAAAAAAAAAND the epilepsy glitch can only be activated by joining and leaving one of the areas on the map wat I mean is you leave from sweet mountain to planet wisp to starlight carnival and ect over and over again and you do it fast and entering a stage after done, and because of that the game cant loading the assets fast enough causing the game to just put random assets in the stage that you loaded in, otherwise than all the other glitches have no epilepsy and some can actually be funny because of how funny they are and how random they are, so in conclusion there is obsoletely no reason to hate the game, there is one glitch that can kill you but its not common the glitch is when racing metal sonic, this sone part where the cam gets close to sonic causing him to bug out, NOW BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING this glitch is rare in my eyes because I only saw it happen to one person and that person is charii55 because he made a everything wrong with sonic colors ultimate, otherwise than YOU HAVE NO REASON TO HATE THE GAME AND IF YOU DO YOUR JUST LOOKING FOR SOMTHING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO CLUE WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR LIFE, ok maybe I went to far with that BUT ITS TRUE and well you should get my point by now and I technically explained ever glitch that can kill you in game or irl cuz of the epilepsy, AND I DONT WANA HEAR YOU SAYING BUt KaL THarE IS ONE GltCH THat SHows A BLACK VOiD In aquarium park, well do it kill you? I just love colors it's been my favorite sonic game for years an yea ultimate has it's issues but I still love it just seeing my favorite sonic game remastered makes me so happy it's like being fourteen all over again

At first Sonic Colors Ultimate sucks because of the mess and the glitches but after a few patches I think it's Ok at best, I still prefer to play Sonic Colors OG on the Wii though, I do like the new Jade Ghost Wisp from Team Sonic Racing that was pretty cool and the Metal Sonic race while hard it was fun, Now compare Sonic Colors Ultimate to games like Warcraft III Reforged, Diablo II Resurrected and Grand Theft Auto The Trilogy: The Definitive Edition Sonic Colors Ultimate looks more competent compare to what Activision-Blizzard and Rockstar Games put out.
Ignore the bugs and glitches then and colors ultimate would be perfect remaster
@@JeffreyLor-ex9zr Yes it would but being that Sonic Colors Ultimate is what it is, it ruined Sonic Colors' rep, in 2010, Sonic Colors saved the IP after games like Sonic 06 did damage to the brand.

It’s impressive how SEGA can pull off messing up an already existing game. They must have rushed the devs horribly.
I wouldn't call it a good Remaster. Just, passable, now that all the glitches have been patched. There's nothing in Ultimate that makes it much better than the Wii version, and there's also a lot of issues that didn't affect the Wii original, like the remixed music being hit or miss, the graphics being hit or miss, the Tails Saves being questionable (especially when trying to get Red Rings).
I'd put it in the same teir now as Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, though maybe much lower, because at least BFBBR looks very nice.

The loading times weren't even that long on Wii, so who knows why they decided to change it... If anything, they should have been made _shorter_

I don't really care about framerate. Or graphics to an extent. Sure, I wouldn't play a game if the graphics were bad, but I would judge a game by the controls or soundtrack before I would judge it by the graphics

I actually disagree with a lot of points you made in your video Sonic Colors ultimate was not a great port. If anything it just made me want to play the Wii version because at least the wii version is well actually finished, there was at least some good intentions in trying to make an HD remaster but all that falls short. To prevent this comment from being a paragraph long I will just highlight some of the more egregious things and no before anyone says anything even with the patches the game is still burning garbage. First is the metal Sonic races I honestly would have preferred time trials because all they did was just take supersonic and retextured him to look like Metal Sonic hell he doesn't even have his own animations, then there's the lighting some areas have almost no winning at all While others namely Starlight Carnival have arguably too much almost to the point of being blinding, that's not even including the fact that the lights don't even interact with the environment itself which might I repeat the Wii version did this better. And the final two things on this little side rant is the Jade ghost whisp and tail saves. The tail saves already in and of themselves make an easy game even easier they don't reward skillful play and is just a minor excuse to try to seemingly modernize the game because after all modern platform games don't have lives or at least most don't. And finally the Jade ghost whisp which is not new it actually comes from team Sonic racing which was already forgettable and then hastily shoved it into this game with no Rhyme or Reason in fact a lot of these sections just now take place in previously out of bounds areas which are also glitchy even to this day. If you like this game that's fine it's not my job to convince people of the latter and I know that just typing out this comment invites all sorts of vitriol and maybe I deserve it but I can confidently say that no it is most definitely not a great port.

But you're right at the end. when playing colors ultimate with mods, it's basically what the game should've been from the get-go. (Every time as well, the sonic community always just need to fix those games, and it took them quite a while as well. And the game is even made with the Godot engine of all things, but no one cared enough to even start making mods day one. Seriously, what is wrong with the gaming industry? I'm getting sick of this.)
I definitely think playing the game on dolphin is a way better option

IMO Sonic colors ultimate is an awesome remaster sure from its release it did have bugs and glitches, I mean I’ve only encountered 4 issues through my experience with the gameplay, but overall this game is my proper boost formula game, unlike sonic forces which I still like.

My problem with it is that people just accepted the state it was released in. Why is the bar this low for a company like sega? Time and time again they get away with rushing this cheap unfinished bullshit to turn a profit. Not just a sega issue, its a widespread issue with many companies. You should only be selling FINISHED games at full price and not something comparable to a fucking alpha build.
The bar is low because sega does this time and time again and it gets reviewed well. How does a game like sonic colors ultimate rate higher or equal to the original with all of its issues yet Sonic unleashed a finished game was rated so poorly? I get they may not have enjoyed unleashed but fuck at least it was finished product.... Stop letting sega and other game companies get away with this slimy bullshit. ESPECIALLY for remasters and ports.

On Dolphin, you get 1080p or even 4k for free, and the game even has a 60fps patch, and you can fast-forward through to make the short Wii loading times even faster, so there's no point at all to the remaster

Sonic Colors Ultimate is a PERFECT REMASTER imo well why it’s because of the big changes they made like the glowing effects and replaced the life’s with tails save so yes it’s a good remaster and I find the game fun to play.
I don’t think it is. It’s patched now, yeah, but the first release was so unpolished and buggy that it soured a majority of the Sonic fanbase’s opinion on Colors as a whole, making the general consensus now that Colors was an overrated, mediocre game that started the all of the bad trends with the franchise in the 2010s. Maybe it’s a decent remaster _now_ but it was not one on launch which is my problem.

@@tabbywarrior Source for this? Not to be rude, but I’ve never heard of Unleashed having glitches that can literally cause seizure inducing graphical bugs. The most i can think of is the werehog clipping glitch and M-Speed/D-Speed but you have to go out of your way to trigger those. I’m not saying that Unleashed didn’t have bugs, but I’ve never heard of a show stopping moment happening in normal gameplay.

@@paulbell3682 This is true. But one glitch being exclusively on the Switch version doesn’t make the port’s reputation any better. Sonic 06 for example had a way better frame-rate and less glitches on the Xbox 360 version, but had a way worse frame-rate and even more glitches on PS3, yet it’s horrible frame-rate is always called out as a talking point when it’s a nonissue in the Xbox version.

The last 20 years of Sonic is the worst era in my opinion. It's mostly the tonal shift to Saturday morning cartoon characters. The juvenile jokes and gags. The lack of anything interesting going on story wise. Colors is the embodiment of this era of Sonic. It's everything I hate in one game.

If you think modern has always moved bad, then you’re either trash at the games, or never played Unleashed and Generations. In those games sonic controlled perfect and that’s a fact. In Colors he controlled decent. In forces he controlled pretty bad.

Kinda tired of even having to point this out, but not including any of the DS content in Sonic Colors “Ultimate” means that the game is missing the better half of content from the original release.
and even just talking about the Wii game, even though I think Ultimate does actually look better, I’d still never recommend that version, because the game just feels way better with a Wii remote + nunchuck than a standard controller.

"Sonic Colors: Ultimate" is a video game that is so bad, you don't even have to play it in order know that it's bad. All you have to do is just look up some gameplay footage and you'll hate it on the spot. The entire concept is completely unnecessary. Why would you remaster a video game that was already perfect to begin with? It doesn't make any sense. This game gets an automatic 1/10 from me. I would rather play "Shadow The Hedgehog", "Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)", and "Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric" than that piece of garbage. As a matter of fact, I would like to see a remastered version of "Sonic The Hedgehog (2006)" because we all know that game didn't make a good first impression.
