Last time he did an ad for Helix, I ended up ordering one and straight up its amazing. They’re pricy but they’re cheaper than things like purple and honestly a better (I had a purple that I ended up giving away in a move)
From Magic 30, a product for no one, to Jumpstart 2022, a product for everyone, both releasing in the span of 1 week is absolutely crazy.
Right? It's like WotC is trying to find the formula for putting out as much low effort nonsense as possible, while also keeping you engaged by reminding you that they still employ actual game designers.
I'm not necessarily protecting Wizards of the Coast by saying this, just a heads up. But they have said before that they want to make boxes that fits everyones wallets. Cheap boxes, mid boxes, and expensive boxes. They also finally have realised that selling $20 Commander decks for beginners was actually a good idea because they upgraded all their decks to $50 ones, no matter what was in them and that super backfired.
What they need to remember is that the lower costed stuff needs to be FUN AND PLAYABLE. That has been their issue. And their top end stuff is overpriced as all hell. It's like they are fumbling blindly with this, no matter what feedback we give them. I hope 30th anniversary stings for them.
WotC is clearly experimenting with what the player base wants [is willing to spend], and hopefully they get the message that good products are better than.... whatever 30th anniversary was...

I'm new to magic, and wanted to get my partner into the game even though she doesn't really play card games. We've played Jumpstart 2022 twice now and she's enjoyed it quite a bit. Big recommend for new and experienced players, as it levels out the playing field quite a bit.

I started in commander precons. It took me a wile to learn magic 😂 but it's awesome, the think is... I play alone me vs me like I use to do with yu gi oh. It's frustrating there's no group in town to play magic... 😢

One VERY important thing to notice is that the original JS was released only in english language, while the JS 22 has been translated in various other languages (french, italian, german...) this is sooooo useful since this product is perfect for casual players, I couldn't just grab an original JS box and play with my friends because of the language barrier, while NOW I can with JS22. This is a HUGE selling point.
Yeah, same. We managed to get my SIL into mtg, but her English is a little shaky which makes something as complicated as mtg hard to play.
I only collect my MTG cards in my locale and I wish the professor included a bit on localization for MTG product reviews as not all of them get translated in every region sadly.
One thing to keep in mind when comparing the financial value to that of the original JumpStart, since the first set was underprinted at launch and really hard to find this made the prices of cards exclusive to jumpstart go ridiculously high.
Once they started printing it again and made it widely available the prices went down a lot, and are now a lot closer to that of the new JumpStart 2022 cards.
With that said, time to get a box so that I can play some games with family for Christmas!

My wife and I love the Game Night box…bc we’re new to MTG.
I’m so glad Jumpstart 2022 is an improvement on the Brothers’ War version because that was a horrible experience of a format I was excited to try. Bought 4 packs…got 3 of the same theme.
Adding a box of 2022 to my buy list!
It could also be worth purchasing a box of original JS as well. While you may get a couple of the same theme, mine weren't identical packs. Plus, you can combine original JS with J22 and have a plethora of combinations!
It's super fun. Keep at it and stay out of the crazy expensive bullshit, and you'll be good to go.

I'm so surprised by how good the actual jumpstart sets are, it's like they were made by a completely different company that actually likes the game.

I bought two boxes of the original Jumpstart, and I have all of the original boosters sleeved and stored in cubeamajigs. I love this product, because it keeps getting use! Fun to play in short doses and to use to teach the game to others. I'm glad to see the effort put into products like this one.
I really wish they included the card list on the back the faction card. It really is a pain to break apart two decks that are the same color.

EDIT: those little Dragon Shield boxes are called "cube shell" boxes in case you guys are interested.
This is one of those things that even though I only play proxy commander with the boys, getting one of each of these Jumpstart boxes with reboxable packs sound so awesome. It's tempting to get these, and if they come down in price a bit more, I may just pick these up.
This is precisely what I did, using burger tokens - perfect fit deck boxes. They fit single sleeved half decks wonderfully. Those (or similar) along with a carrying case of some sort (I went inexpensive on Amazon) and the replayability is practically endless!
Tbh, I got the original jump start and simply put numbers on my sleeves and put them in small plastic bags. Sure, doesn't look quite as nice, but it doesn't change the gameplay, so I do recommend
Getting a box of JMP and J22 and keeping everything in resealable packs seems like a great way to keep playing Jumpstart. If there are more Jumpstart core sets in the future, and they're consistent in power level, it could be come an expanding collection of packs to draw from. I feel like it'd be good to keep on hand for quick, balanced games, or for introducing new players to Magic.
That really does just sound like a proper core set with extra steps.

I'm just as much a fan of this Jumpstart as I was with the original. Themes are well designed and unique, eternal formats got some great new cards, and personally, I love the Anime arts. Its just overall a fun product to crack open with friends and have yourself a small tournament. Great review and I'm happy that there is finally a product like this amongst all the junk that was made previously

Would you recommend buying a box of 2022 or the original? I've been out of the game for nearly 20yrs. Getting back into it and thought about buying a box to get some fun quick decks built and maybe build up some bulk. It may be another year or two before I can really get my oldest kid into it, but figured them opening packs with me may get them more excited about it (I did buy one of those Pokemon Battle Arena boxes and play that from time to time, so some interest in card games is there).
Thinking maybe grabbing the original now and maybe 2022 if needed down the line. May also see if a LGS has anyone that does jumpstart and not just commander or modern/legacy that will take me some time to get into.
@@FireMrshlBill If I'm being honest, I think both the original and 2022 are great buys. Even buying both is a great concept because you'll have even more variety. This is also a great beginner collection because it has so many good reprints in them as wellbas different themes to find the playstyle you like.
As far as finding events for Jumpstart at an LGS, I'd just call and ask. Usually if you can get the people to fire off an event, most LGS dont mind running one.
I disagree with the unique part. There's a surprisingly high number of repeat themes from the first Jumpstart and many of the cards in the new themes have the same rares or uncommoms that the first Jumpstart set had. This ultimately doesn't matter if the gameplay is different and fun, but I just thought it was important to note.
I love jumpstart so much that I created my own cube for it with a few custom decks. Bumped up the rare count to 3 per pack and re-sorted some decks for increased synergy.
I did this as well. I went through the rare and common packs and combined them into a single pack so they're more competitive with the mythic packs. Some of the themes were still meh, but overall a great time.
I also bought that unsanctioned box and made custom JS packs. I liked it but my wife hated them lol

As I still consider myself a new player, especially around my other playgroup friends, the first generation of Jumpstart is how I was able to learn the basics of this great game. Not allowing my friends who have played for a long time with tweaked out decks and force a deck similar to mine, and then shuffle and play was truly a fun experience my first time around and I look forward to this product too. This is the kind of starter set I wanted many years ago. Glad to see it's being done despite so many years later. I actually bought a sealed box for the first time since War of the Sparks

My wife and I got the new Game nights at our local gamestore when it first came out and used it to teach our kids (10 & 7) how to play magic. We had a lot of fun together and the kids did very well learning, we got all the decks sleeves and deck boxes and we still play it here and there. Is it as fun as playing a round of Commander? No, but its still fun and the kids enjoy it and its helping them learn to play the game better and honestly the price for 5 decks was pretty convenient. That aside I'm thrilled to see this Jumpstart 2022 looks great just like the original and will probably end up picking up a box. It's great to see you excited about a product again, Love your videos Professor!
I'm currently getting into MTG (back into it more precisely), and I just wanted to say thank you for your videos, friend. MTG is incredibly confusing when you don't know what you're doing, and still being uncertain where to start, I wound up purchasing a 1,000 card lot from Star City Games on Amazon. If I get into MTG because of it, great, but if not, at least I'll have a mini-collection to call my own. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on such card lots, and if it'd be a fun way to play (everyone buys a 1,000 card lot and plays against one another for $20-30). I'm a big fan of Serra Angel after all these years, and angels in genera, and I'm thinking about buying a premade angel deck off eBay, or buying various singles, but we'll see. Who knows, maybe I'll open up a bunch of angel cards in the card lot. Thank you again, and God bless :)
After 20 years together, my wife finally learned to play magic with me. I taught her with jumpstart and now she has a sleeved up cube we play with. I'm very excited to add a box or two to the cube
If you're planning on buying multiple boxes, i highly recommend looking at the decklists for rare and commons packs and combining them to make one mythic pack.
This is amazing! Smash-up meets MTG for casual-friendly, quick to play needs. I love a product that just makes me actually want to *play* this game and sit down with people and enjoy my time with them.
Eventually, we could even be making our own half-decks!
Played some Jumpstart 2022 on Saturday after playing in my LGS's commander tourney. Can honestly say Jumpstart was the highlight of the evening :) I love this product and I'm glad Prof does too.

Had a jumpstart brunch with commander playgroup this past weekend. Lots of fun. Love the new art on some reprints.
I got wrecked at the Jumpstart 2022 release event.
Speedy Elves vs the World.
First opponent had a two-creature repeatable removal setup both games, third opponent had two 6/6's and a 6/5 on board when I lost to him the second time. Second opponent was a draw after going 1-1-1 to time. I probably would've lost that match otherwise.
I love the jumpstart products. They really help a new player like me grow a collection.
I will also say, as a couple of brand new players, we actually did enjoy the game night box. It helped us not only learn the game, but learn different strategies and learn about different types of cards. We now play it roulette style, where we put five lands face down and randomly pick a deck to try and win with. I know now it wasnt a perfect product, and there are better ones out there, but the game night box was a success with us.
I would like to know, have you done many games mixing the original and 2022 Jumpstart packs? Did the packs gel together?

I got to play Jumpstart 22 at a Mox Boarding House, was fun. No time needed to build the decks, and people were excited when they got something good in their pack. I got 2 common themes boosters but still got to trade some blows with opponents.

Looks like an exciting way for experienced players to have some easy casual fun! Thank God it's 24 packs instead of 18 I have no idea what they were thinking with the set Jumpstarts. I'll definitely be cubing them too. $90 for endless combinations. Not even sure why they sell Game Night.

Glad they didn't screw this one up. My only complaint about the original Jumpstart was how many duplicates of the common packs I got in the same variation in the same box. Even wound up with two of four mythic packs (across the two boxes I bought) that were the same, which was disappointing. Hopefully will get a little better distribution on the box I'll pick up to fill out my cube storage and replace some of those straight dupes.

I would love if Pokemon made a jumpstart format. Each half deck is a different Pokemon line. Great way to reprint ans showcase classic cards too.
Thats essentially how the Build and Battle Boxes work, but specific to the set they were released with. A little bit of tweaking and they could make all the half decks compatible with eachother.
Openend my Box yesterday with two friends. I am a heavily enfranchised player, I play Standard in my LGS, I follow spoiler seasons, I know almost all important cards and mechanics. First friend used to play Magic, still likes to open packs, knows the rules and second friend (his girlfiriend) only knows Magic from watching others play it, so she has a very basic knowledge of the rules, but never played a game before herself. All three of us had so much fun opening the packs and playing all evening, I really love Jumpstart 2022 as it is truly for everyone (us three been Anime Fans also helped a little bit XD)
I will echo sentiments that a Jumpstart video for Shuffle Up & Play would be awesome!
Question: do you think the set verions of Jumpstart become more relevant as more are released and then mixed with other Jumpstarts?
I seriously doubt it. Compare dominaria or brothers war to their corresponding color decks with either JS set. They're totally uncompetitive
✋I am one of those sic folk that have gotten 4+ games of gamenight in. The ppl I play with either haven't played heavily for months/years OR are tired of the growing list of shortfalls of commander. Players having turns of "Land,pass" has been more engaging than four players waiting 5-10 minutes while the fifth is either a) going through a nondeterministic loop or the far more often, b) parsing out all of their triggers, forgetting about a third of them anyway.
Side note, the recent game night is the perfect box of planechase decks.
When Jumpstart first released I decided to make a Jumpstart cube. And although I have skipped Jumpstart Dominaria and Jumpstart Brothers War I had always wanted more Jumpstart. Now that this has been released (well not quite here in New Zealand yet) I'll definitely be buying these to add to my cube.
High Five! I have done the same thing since I bought a box of original Jumpstart when it first came out, it's my first cube and now I can finally add more :P
jumpstart is one of my favorite magic products. I still have my original jumpstart box sleeved and in reusable packs to use for a quick and fun random game.
I would recommend to anyone aiming at sleeving and reusing their Jumpstart product to give the 22ct deck boxes from Burger Tokens a look. They do the job beautifully and are priced quite well.

Also worth mentioning the box has 24 packs and not 18. Important when considering playing Jumpstart format since you actually have enough packs for 6 full games instead of 4 with 2 random leftover packs.
There was a small comment about mixing the themes of the original and the ones of 2022. I have to check that issue
I played so much of the OG Jumpstart on Arena when it was released, and I'm saddened we aren't getting Jumpstart 2022 on the client this time around.
It's like they hate money, I spent hundreds on the first Jumpstart on Arena, it was incredible.
I enjoy Jumpstart immensely. I'm glad to know the 2022 edition is going to keep the spirit of the original Jumpstart alive, and I will probably end up spending a good deal of $$$ on this one, too!
My wife and I decided to go to our LGS on release night for this by absolute happenstance. I wanted to get back into MTG after not playing since 2012 and she wanted to learn for the first time. We grabbed a box of this, took it home and we are only just getting down to our last packs.
So much fun, so much value, and it really took me back to why I loved the game all those years ago. The decks, while challenging, were also built well enough for a complete beginner in my wife to pick up and play (with many educational moments and questions of course).
If this product had existed back when I was originally playing, I likely would have stuck around more. I love building non-meta decks and having a good time. But grabbing a box of these and forcing everyone to play with a non-meta deck and get creative would have brought a new dimension to my old play-group whose only interest was to win in the most efficient way possible. This product is sincerely what this game is, and should always be about. I could go on for hours about it. Consider my interest in the game re-ignited.

If magic boiled down to just draft/sealed product for main sets, the yearly commander set and jumpstart; it would be perfect.

It looks like a great, fun product. I've only been playing Commander so far, but I'm tempted to pick this up and play it with my local community (provided they're interested).
It feels like they wanted the set jumpstart packs to act as an addition to the main jumpstart, rather than its own product. A way to spice up jumpstart with cards from the newest set. But if that's the case, they failed miserably by releasing them before Jumpstart 2022.
I bought four Dominaria United Jumpstart packs so I could play some games with my wife and not need to prep anything. It was plenty of fun in its own right, and the cards were all Standard-legal which is nice for someone who just got back into the game and needs a starting point.
I opened a few on my channel over the weekend and quiet impressed with the cards.
Prof, have you tested mixing packs of Jumpstart 2022 with Jumpstart 2020? I want to blend both sets into a half deck cube. I wonder if the power level between the sets is fairly balanced

An observation: I think it's a good thing that when you pulled up the top value cards in the set, two of the three were reprints rather than pushed designs. The original Jumpstart, all three cards were original to the set.
I also do question if those original three cards might have been lower costed if supply had been more accessible from the start? I remember the set having production and distribution delays due to the pandemic, which made getting those cards much harder.
Does Jumpstart work with the older versions? Can I use a '22 and Brothers War booster together?

I got into magic around the time Midnight Hunt came out because of the original JumpStart. I'd be at my LGS for the digimon weekly but my friend and I would crack jumpstart between rounds and play against each other. Truly excited to get a box of 2022 and experience that original JumpStart feel once again!
Looove the art treatment in this set. The theme card for the set, as opposed to the land, was a brilliant idea that I hope they keep for next year.

True, but I'm pretty sure they're only adding evergreen or deciduous stuff to the predefined token list - I'd assume Bananas to be too specific for this..? Then again, one never knows nowadays xD

The anime art and the reprints make me choose these packs when i randomly buy one.
If you get this product, DON'T play this way. Instead play how it was offered on Arena:
Each player takes 3 packs and opens them, then selects one of the three. Repeat for the second half deck, shuffle those together. Once you run out of unopened packs simply obscure the unplayed opened packs and continue!
This way is so much better because it includes much of the fun of drafting without the absurd time sink, and can mitigate much of bad synergy feel bads, and rewards player skill.
Just ordered a box for me, my husband and his brother to have some fun with. Would have waited for our LGS but they still don't have it in and don't know when they're getting shipment. . .and they have a tendency not to order enough. They only ordered enough of the War Hammer decks for their pre-orders and while the 'newest' commander decks are always sitting out for a week or so, the 'older ones' never are present. I don't think they even have any of the Dominaria ones anymore.
My wife picked up a box of this at our LGS for me for Christmas but she's making me wait until Christmas to be able to do anything with it lol. Seeing such a good review makes it all the more difficult to wait until then.

I did the same thing with my first jump start box in 2021. I got both halve decks sleeved ( color coded ) in side dragon shield boxes. Not only that but the booster box fits perfectly 8 dragon shield sleeve boxes.
So yes each deck has two different colored sleeves lol.

I wholeheartedly agree that Jumpstart 2022 is an amazing product. Too bad I won't be getting any because my wallet is exhausted from other product. That's what happens when WotC print this much. I can't afford it. So I guess I'm sticking to singles. All this said, you can bet your butt I'll be getting a box if the price stays as is for a few months.
I absolutely would love to see Jumpstart star in Shuffle Up and Play.
I LLOOOOVEEE Jumpstart 2020. i have like 8 boxes saved for future games. it's so much fun to grab 2 and make a deck and play with friends.
I don't mind the anime-styled art. It's not some other IP being shoehorned into MTG, it's just a different art style. Nothing wrong with different art styles on cards.
That's what I've been doing, saving all the jumpstarts I get to make a smash up style box to be playes. Me and the missus usually either buy draft boosters add 2 of each color land and play them like that and jumpstart fits in to our play style perfectly.
After the recent kerfuffle of questionable magic products, I was actually looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this! Now that I know this is a decent product, I think I'll get online, look at all the cards, and buy singles of what I like.
I have seen some comments about doings SU&P with this, and i think it would be cool if you did JS22+JS+JS DomU
The anime cards look sweet. Loved the variant art in Kamigawa. Love the alt art in a lot of sets. The panic over diluting the image is silly to me.
hated the jumpstart with the individual sets of dominaria and brother's war. Jumpstart 2020 was really good even though my elves didn't get my allosaurus shepard, and the 4 packs of well-read did NOT have rhystic study. I did pull multiple Liliana's, krenko, terror of the peaks, craterhoof behemoth, and emiel. It also got my kids playing with me, I just put them face down with different colors, and said "pick two different colors" so I didn't have to look at a decklist to separate colors and it encouraged variety.
Mono B rats is my first, favorite and most blinged our commander deck I have! Of course the rat pack with the new commander would be “mythic” rarity… time to fire up the printer!

On the bright side, this product will likely be printed for the next year or so (if the first version were any indication), so the price will steadily decrease over time. None of those original jumpstart chase cards from last set kept their value.
Excellent product! I played with my brother and my girlfriend, the latter of which is brand new to mtg, and both plays were very fun and balanced. My gf even opened Urza's Merfolk, complete with an anime Karn Liberated, Walking Ballista, and Svyelun!
Even without opening crazy bombs, the game play felt balanced. I can see myself buying more whenever I just want something different than commander.
The only criticism I'll give is that the product is a little advanced for brand new players. Probably better to first try the starter decks and then branch to jumpstart.
I still have a box with one of each theme from the first JumpStart set aside for rolling dice to get chaos (keeping one of each version of each theme, while I did actually get close to, felt excessive), I am very ready to add to that box with more proper JumpStart product. Easily one of my favorite product lines they've done! I don't even have any 60-card decks build anymore, it's all Commander or Jumpstart Chaos for me!
Professor: I'm not always in agreement with your channel; but good lord you nailed it. The Original Jumpstart was a truly superb and *fantastic* product *for everyone*. It is absolutely my *favorite* set; because it was extremely easy to get a wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, cousin, you name it - to play. The rules were simple, the cards had great power, and most importantly - the price was affordable enough that giving away 2 jumpstart boosters to someone felt...great; to be honest.
I am *hopeful* that these products follow the lessons of Jumpstart '20 and Jumpstart '22; because THIS is the inclusivity and excitement MTG should be about!

I bough two and my cousin 2 an i got eldrazi, dragons and she got goblins , rats and she pulled up the ashcoat rat. Best product of the year 100% so much fun!

Tbf, if you want Magic but with anime art there's already Force of Will- no not the card, the card game. Yes they named it like the card, don't ask me why.

@@willjackson5885 okay, but you get why they are called 'old' border, right? Because they ARE a part of actual Magic. For years, they were the only borders. That's like saying Black Lotus and the dual lands don't feel like Magic cards. Anime I don't think hit the game until War of the Spark, and aside from like Frankenstein in the VERY early days, crossovers weren't until Secret Lair iirc.
@@chevin0 Magic to me is the mechanics and gameplay, and love how Universe Beyond cards use the Magic rules system to make flavorful cards.
I want to pick up a couple of boxes when my brothers and I get together. We can crack and play. We don’t always remember to bring our cards when traveling across the country.
