Sadly all of my big box stores are also now selling commander decks at $50.00 a pop. Some of them even go above that! With a million decks being released every year now, it could be a fun video at the end of the year to cover your favorite precons of the year!
Sadly it is also true that the economy is shit… TCG local Stores are not wavering… I usually like to support my local TCG… but as you said they have raised the prices, you’re better off buying singles, or waiting like places like Walmart, Gamestop or other retailers that dont care as much to drop it in price if noone buys them months later, I have also bought them from online card stores that are out of my state and in small town and dont sell as much so they will put them on sale online eventually and i have them ship to my state where they are selling them more expensive. You can also try TCGPlayer or Card Kingdom idk if they have deals.
I just got back into it and want to try commander but most of the precons i see are closer to 100, some are even more. that's the same price as a budget meta deck for other formats.
It's not the big store setting the price, it's a distributor. Large stores lease shelf space to a distributor and while coupons for the store will work on those products, the store otherwise has nothing to do with them. If you ever go into a Walmart and look at Magic cards, you'll almost immediately have employees staring at you, hovering nearby, or aggressively walking by you over and over, because the store is entirely on the hook for any thefts from these shelves. If nothing else, these inflated costs only further make the case for WotC canning the distributor system and selling directly to retailers and LGS.

These deck reviews, plus a skim through each deck list, settled me on Jump Scare. I'll hold off on the singles until later but, at the moment, Death Toll the main set are likely where most singles will come from.
Miracle Worker spoke to me from the moment the commander was revealed. My very first deck was the Virtue and Valour precon so I'm excited for a new take on the enchantment archetype, picked it up over the weekend and can't wait to play!
This makes me so glad I pre-ordered all 4 for 140 dollars. I think after the deck reveals I saw the writing on the walls, especially for the one I was most excited for(Endless Punishment)
I just picked up the Miracle Worker deck last night and it was so much fun to play right out of the box. It even won 2/3 of games! I’m looking forward to going through boxes and looking for some interesting enchantments that maybe haven’t seen a lot due to cost and seeing what kind of shenanigans I can bring to the table.
I played Miracle Worker earlier today (I got it last night) and I barely did any actual Miracle work, and it played more like an enchantress deck. Worked really well and I had a ton of fun with it.
I unfortunately resulted to Amazon for Endless Punishment. Local stores are charging 75$+ for the precon, which is pretty wild. No way I’m paying around double the price.
Just wanted to say thank you, I’ve been playing mtg for about a year now and you have taught and saved me soooo much 😂 appreciate everything you do and I’m liking everything you put out as well as recommending your channel for any newcomers
Duskmourn's art and setting got me into Commander. I was a Yugioh player for years and then I saw some of the horrors and thought, "I need to play this." Super refreshing take despite all the nostalgia based inspiration. I love when monster designs are uncanny rather than just fearsome.
I do wonder if I am the only one who is disappointed that we are moving on from Bloomburrow so quickly. Admittedly, a part of this is my antipathy towards a 'horror' set and how much the anthropomorphic animals aesthetic of Bloomburrow really worked for me. The pace of standard set releases is really impacting me negatively despite my being a relatively new player (my first prerelease was Phyrexia: All Will be One). The constant drive to shove new products down my throat just doesn't sit well with me despite me loving the game.
It seems to me that they intended DSK to come out in mid October, but the schedule was shifted before dates were released cause of the inclusion of Foundations in the end of this year rather than early next year.
I don't want this reply to come off as mean, but this has been one of the most common takes I've seen about Duskmorne. I do agree I wish at least the set came a month later, or that we even got a second set in bloomburrow, but a lot of people have voiced this complaint.
no seriously though, nothing has a chance to breath or be enjoyed. it pisses me off. maybe if you got all the cards on release and played every day till the next set youd get to use the cards and let their mechanics and flavor breath. but for average ppl, wtf
@taylon5200 Each to their own preferences, but my main point was that the release schedule is simply far too congested, but this feeling is heightened as we are going from a setting I prefer to one I am far less interested in.
Definitely agree with Miracle Worker. Didn't preorder it at first, but after seeing the decklist, I realized how good a lot of the cards were, so I got it anyway. A little fewer enchantments than you want (only 25) but enough to regularly cheat them out + great enchantment support cards. Seems like quality over quantity when it comes to the design choices for this deck. Also, Death Toll is still relatively good imo. The lack of big creature ETBs isn't optimal but given you can use this ability almost every turn, it works great to wear your opponents down with lots of creatures that come back once per game. The deck has a lot of generically strong creatures, so having a lot of them (the ones you play during your turn + the one you get to reanimate per turn) isn't too bad. It's not that unique but it's grindy enough to eventually outlive your opponents. Just a very golgari deck.
I got back into paper magic (after 15 years away and about 7 years of just arena) with the release of the Fallout commander decks and Prof has kept me interested and informed since then. What I've learned from this channel has helped me get my friend group hype about MtG and discover new, exciting ways to play. Thanks Prof!
Excellent video as always Prof! Glad I watched it when I did too because a friend is looking for a good graveyard-focused precon and I was about to recommend this one because of its availability. He isn't much of a brewer so I'll have to steer him elsewhere.
My LGS sold all precons for $40 immediately after the prerelease. We overheard someone brought up people were selling the Endless Punishment for $120. My wife immediately wanted it for 40 and I bought myself one too
The $210cad Preorder price, I did it to sell off the other 3 and keep endless pain but wow, didn't know what I had bought to be honest, thank you for your informative videos, especially as a player just getting back into it from playing kitchen table stuff back in ~2011
Hot take its a joke thats how we should get the deck we want for cheaper. Since most shops wont list decks separately till release. Now cases cost like 289 cad just because of endless. It was my 2nd pick deck anyway I went for the the miracle deck.
I thought it looked fun, so I bought it...haven't tried it out yet though. Reminded me a little of my Baba Lysaga deck, caring about card types and such, both Golgari
I literally started playing magic like 2 last thursday, the eve before the prerelease, i was in my local game store and asked them for a commander precon to play with my brother. they already had the duskmourn ones on display. i asked him to sell me the vampire one which was 75€. He declined and said "WotC would send the pinkertons" I ended up buying a 50€ Neyali token deck which I really enjoy. thanks for you videos and for always warning of these shady corpos!
Great informative video prof! I already pre-ordered the Endless Punishment deck a while back. I got it for a good price and knew it would go up later. The miracle worker deck also looks great. I might buy it as well if the price is good. Selling the Arch Enemy cards is a good tip. I might consider it because my playgroup never plays Arch Enemy.
I got all 4 for $120 (roughly $30/deck) a few weeks back and man i feel lucky seeing whats going down with these. This is the first set ive ever been really excited for so i cant wait to get my hands on it!
Endless Punishment is the best precon I have ever seen. Granted I haven't played vs the other Duskmorn decks yet, but if they are better than EP these are cracked AF
I bought a bundle of all 4 when only the commanders where revealed for 130€. So about 33€ per deck. I am very happy with my decision. The decks are awesome. Valgavoth and aminatou are my favorites
I got death toll today and it played very well with no upgrades surprisingly. I won the second game and I was playing against constructed decks. it stands its ground pretty well once you realize how to navigate it
Ive just got my first magic deck, being the death troll commander deck. Ive sleeved them all up and going back in tomorrow for a game. I cant wait XD. Got my sub anyway! Cant wait t learn!
I'm looking to get a second precon to rotate to when I'm playing with my coworkers, and man oh man Miracle Worker is looking really nice. Really split between that and Peace Offering from Bloomburrow! Love group hug strategies, but miracles just seem so fun as well
Picked up Jump Scare from my LGS and it's been a lot of fun! Also appreciate the 10 archenemy cards even if i likely wont use them much, its a good bonus to include.
From what I've seen, Endless Punishment advances the game state fairly quickly by forcing damage onto everyone. It's definitely powerful, but also makes you the prime target.
@@ohnosmoarlulcatz While that is true. the constant card draw and the giagantic buffs to the commander is more then enough to win the game even if the others gang up on you. The precons just run to lillte targeted removal to deal whit it quicly enough.
i absolutely dislike value commanders that randomly get flying tacked onto them with the ability to pump themselves. Its not the first Precon commander to do this, but i think its weird that with Mirko it happened twice this year already.
In my pod of 4, I chose the Death Toll pre-con. Think it's gonna be a lot of fun to get some plays in. Hopefully it plays well under the threat of being scrapped for my mothman deck lol. Also, vids are great as a learning player. Always appreciate the help getting into magic :)
Thanks for the incredibly useful advice as always! I was considering Death Toll as my fav decks have always been Golgari, but since I'm not a confident brewer maybe I'll try out another tricolour deck instead :)
$49.99 is the standard ‘shadow MSRP’. It is what the big box stores have them at and what Amazon has them at when not discounted. It is also the price they are sold to LGS’ to be sold at. Telling people to not buy if they are above $40 only hurts game stores who have to pay more to get them than Amazon and Walmart, and really need to get the $49.99 to profit.
thanks so much for this video. i bought Miracle Worker (for $45 i think at the LGS), but am now super excited to go back and get Death Toll solely to pick it apart and add some sought after cards to my various Golgari decks and craft a homebrew around Rendmaw. i avoided it specifically because i already have so many Golgari decks, but i guess old habits can only be bolstered lol
I am realy exited for the duskmourn cards. I realy like the design of the cards. I was considering of buying the comanders from it. So thx for the video
I went to my LGS on release day for the precons and found the Miracle Worker and Endless Punishment precons for $40 each and the other 2 for $35. Picked up the first two and felt pretty good about it.
I bought the "Jump Scare" Deck. I already loved the "Flip" mechanic from the Karlov Manor precon, but this one is just insane in my eyes! But maybe I will buy Miracle Worker as well in the future.
This is a really interesting analysis, from some of the game play the golgari deck always did great and miracle workers seemed to struggle. Small sample size though.
I'm glad I preordered Endless Punishment for $50 at my LGS. I just wanted Valgavoth, so I didn't care about preordering it before the decklist was revealed. And I'm glad I waited to buy singles for upgrading it, since the base list had like half the cards I wanted to put in it anyway
Optional rulesets are getting really fun in commander. In one game you could potentially: • Draft from a cube! • Play with a bunch of Illegal Un-set cards!(Unglued, Unstable, Unsanctioned, Unfinity) • Play Archenemy! • Play Planechase! • Play Explorers of Ixalan! And: • Play Ravnica: Clue Edition! All in the same game!
I have endless punishment, been building it up a bit too. Its my first deck since return to ravnica and my first commander deck. It's a very fun deck tonokay with. Especially since my last deck was a Rakdos
Having played a number of prerelease sealed format events over the weekend, Death Toll certainly is underwhelming out of box but can be upgraded with a few extra includes from the set. Valgavoth, Terror Eater for example is an excellent example of a win con that's hard to remove and has valuable impact in itself. While Altanak, The Thrice Called doesn't have Say It's Name as an option to summon it in Commander, it is decent ramp option into reviving it from the graveyard. A number of other cards that revive your big hitters from the graveyard are also noticeably missing, such as Valgavoth's Faithful or Funeral Room/Awakening Hall. Otherwise, I am definitely most excited to build something out of the Miracle Worker and Jump Scare precons. Honestly pretty stoked about the current set, been loving the art, mechanics, and flavor text so far. Can't wait to see what the community creatively puts together with Duskmourn.
Thank you for this video, seems like i gonna get one Miracle Worker Commander Deck and a regular Bundle, having the most value and playability for ~90 Bucks.
Damn these decks seem super fire. Really nice to see Aesi finally get a freaking reprint. Also Mana Flare+Barbs on a first strike haster is insane I might have to get one of those.
ganna have to cop the green and black commander deck ! Went too my first ever magic pre release and killed it went 6-0/3-0 in a 3 round event so won all 6 games I played still can't believe it haha got myself a whole box ! 😁😁🤙
Got Endless Punishment in the end. Was absolutely thinking on skipping any of these but I love having precons that offer me strategies that I don't own anything of, group slug in this case. Also love black and red, and my first ever commander (also a precon) was BR too. Plus, moths are cool. Ended up paying 55€ for it, fair considering the current asking price and that it is already sold out on any of my LGS, or the price has gotten up beyond anything reasonable. Can't wait to upgrade the deck with more nasty things!
5:03 I’ve been wanting 100 nonfoil card decks since they started doing the Commanders in foil myself! Fun story: in my The Hosts of Mordor decks sample booster, I pulled an extended art The One Ring.
My GF and i just played our first games of this set today with her friends and it was pretty fun. I ran the Punishment deck and she ran death toll. The punishment deck seems very good but if you are not careful youll start losing more health than your opponents at the table forcing them to draw. It was wacky at first and new to me as this is a style of play i do not normally run. It was interesting having cards that allowed me to gain some of the health i lost to get back in when they thought i was down for the count.

When I am playing the deck, it go very well. Filtering deck with surveil and reduce cost with Aminatou ability. Very good and fun deck.
For a long time I played yugioh and eventually I got really curious about magic, because I overall just love card games. Soon after I bought some packs and loved the card variations, art and mechanics and after seeing you on team aps I headed over here to watch shuffle up and play, 7 months later and me and my lovely girlfriend are playing games of commander every other day!( she woops my butt ALOT!) thanks prof for your insightful videos!

I use the Commander Anthology boxes to carry my Commander decks. Holds about 19 decks in their precon boxes.
Duskmourn's art and setting got me into Commander. I was a Yugioh player for years and then I saw some of the horrors and thought, "I need to play this." Super refreshing take despite all the nostalgia based inspiration. I love when monster designs are uncanny rather than just fearsome.
That sponsorship is actually really freaking cool! I'm totally buying some. Thanks Prof!
I'm the opposite, I want the aesthetic and vibe of duskmourne way more than I want Cinderellas forest animals.
no seriously though, nothing has a chance to breath or be enjoyed. it pisses me off. maybe if you got all the cards on release and played every day till the next set youd get to use the cards and let their mechanics and flavor breath. but for average ppl, wtf
@taylon5200 Each to their own preferences, but my main point was that the release schedule is simply far too congested, but this feeling is heightened as we are going from a setting I prefer to one I am far less interested in.
I immediately took 15 cards out of the death toll deck and replaced them with much more synergistic cards. its a really fun deck now.
The "Endless Pain" box is already being resold for $150. I had a chance to get it for a presale price of $40...... Woops.
Duskmourn really feels like a smash hit!
Also the mechanics included in the expansion make for a very fun prerelease sealed experience
I preordered Endless Punishment and my LGS for $45. Glad to see I’m getting my moneys worth
Borrowed and played Death Toll a couple of times today and had an amazing time, enough to make me buy it immediately
My LGS sells those decks for $42 and some cents and that is with tax's, but I enjoy the black/red deck so much and how much I've been changing it.
I won the second game and I was playing against constructed decks. it stands its ground pretty well once you realize how to navigate it
I really love Death toll! Its fun to play with it! i will be tearing it apart for the other winter though (the jund one)
I always look forward to the professor's takes on sets.
Jump Scare looks really fun. I am glad to hear that it works well out of the box.
The only channel I check on the new commander releases ❤
I bought the jump scare precon I have no use for archenemy but lands entering and turning up expensive permanents looks sooooo good!
Surprised that Endless Punishment wasn't your first pick. The enchantment deck looks solid, I agree.
From what I've seen, Endless Punishment advances the game state fairly quickly by forcing damage onto everyone. It's definitely powerful, but also makes you the prime target.
Probably because you will become arch enemy regularly. It's good but people WILL target you xD
I’ve never bought a commander precon but that miracle worker deck looks like a lot of fun. And that value!
I picked up Jump Scare, though I've been playing a long time it's a new playstyle for me. Really looking forward to testing it out.
I bet prof was happy when he saw that merfolk card
This will be my first bundle I buy , just recently got into MTG and I couldn’t resist these new sets , love the horror theme
Thanks prof :) always appreciate your perspective
I am realy exited for the duskmourn cards. I realy like the design of the cards. I was considering of buying the comanders from it. So thx for the video
I went to my LGS on release day for the precons and found the Miracle Worker and Endless Punishment precons for $40 each and the other 2 for $35. Picked up the first two and felt pretty good about it.
I bought the "Jump Scare" Deck. I already loved the "Flip" mechanic from the Karlov Manor precon, but this one is just insane in my eyes!
But maybe I will buy Miracle Worker as well in the future.
I love playing Grismold already, so admittedly I'm still pretty excited for Rendmaw. Will definitely be rebuilding that with my enchantment staples.
I think you've been harsh on the assessment of the Death Toll one. Nonetheless great video. Long live the precons!
This is a really interesting analysis, from some of the game play the golgari deck always did great and miracle workers seemed to struggle. Small sample size though.
I got a balloon man commander from my collector sample! Pretty stoked
These actually look like really interesting precons. I definitely dig that esper one
In one game you could potentially:
• Draft from a cube!
• Play with a bunch of Illegal Un-set cards!(Unglued, Unstable, Unsanctioned, Unfinity)
• Play Archenemy!
• Play Planechase!
• Play Explorers of Ixalan!
And:
• Play Ravnica: Clue Edition!
All in the same game!
I have endless punishment, been building it up a bit too. Its my first deck since return to ravnica and my first commander deck. It's a very fun deck tonokay with. Especially since my last deck was a Rakdos
I know I'm late but I just played the Ms. Bumbleflower precon, and it was 🔥! It was so much fun to play 🐰
I'm building the room commander from the set and its so much fun flavor!
The Archenemy rework is the only reason I was interested in these. I really like the co op nature of the sub-format.

I’ve been wanting 100 nonfoil card decks since they started doing the Commanders in foil myself!
Fun story: in my The Hosts of Mordor decks sample booster, I pulled an extended art The One Ring.
Looking forward to this one - I got myself a the endless punishment deck and would like to hear your thoughts about it
Jump Scare was an absolute alpha at the table! Don't forget your triggers and boom you won
Great analysis, I might grab Jump Scare.
As someone who’s been out of the magic game for 7 years, buying back into it this way was definitely worth it
I got a set from my lgs for 160 pre tax i think all of these are so fun and cant wait to play with them
The thicc commander proxies were my favorite bookmarks of all time... Good thing I have way more than enough for all my in-progress books!
WOTC, please consider a Dr. Suess Universes Beyond - I would love that bookmark
/s, but it would kinda actually be cool
Firstly, I want to buy rakdos deck with friend but only left Esper which is Miracle Worker then I just took it. When the deck arrived, I check the deck and got a lot of good cards. When I am playing the deck, it go very well. Filtering deck with surveil and reduce cost with Aminatou ability. Very good and fun deck.
Interesting that the two I got really excited by and picked up are the ones that got a tied first pick.
You really help with the FOMO fear 😊
Happy to see Schemes make a return but, sad to see the old frame be tosses aside for generic looking full arts.
