A lot of people are asking about those resealable packs I use in this video. Those are Cubeamajigs resealable packs, great for Cube and a hundred other uses and I review them here: th-cam.com/video/DL6yzuxltaY/w-d-xo.html
Great Video Prof!! And I got me some Cubeamajigs last week... after playing a box with a few friends (while being safe as well)... Gonna repack them and play as often as I can!
I heard a couple things, one the print runs were cut by 75% because of covid and the fact they had to get M21 and Double Masters printed. Also this is an "ever green" set meaning its going to be printed along side the life of M21.
I can't quite put my finger on it but I think the Prof is the best ambassador of the game, from a players perspective, out there today. He cuts through the BS; he is direct about what you're getting and what you should expect to get and isn't afraid to State the truth of that whether it is good or bad for wotc. And his passion for the game is always evident; you don't have to be some caricature of a hype man for mgt in order to show how much you love it. He makes it seem like he is your advocate for a better MTG experience and that probably more than anything is why he is a trusted voice in the community.
I love this product, I preordered it at $100 and played it this past weekend with my girlfriend. We were planning on just opening 4 boosters each, but the games were so fun and the pulls so exciting that we ended up playing through the whole box, getting over a dozen games in throughout the day! It reminded me a lot of the styles of decks I would build back when I was just starting to play, but with exciting, splashy cards and better synergy! I ended up taking out the cards I wanted for commander, replacing them with similarly splashy, but less expensive cards and sealing all the packs so I could play with them later. I'm planning on working through my shoe-box to make my own Jumpstart packs with cards that aren't quite good enough for constructed. I ended up getting Rise of the Dark Realms, Craterhoof Behemoth, Rhystic Study, Ghoulcaller Gisa, Phyrexian Tower, and some less expensive but playable cards like Vedalken Archmage, Black Market, Reanimate, Liliana Waker of the Dead, Kira Great Glass-Spinner. Also some of the fun new legends like Bruvac and Neyith! Overall really great purchase (at the appropriate price!!), with hours of great gameplay, and tons of cards I can slot into my existing decks, including those fun basic lands.
@@TabooX1984 it's just where I put cards that I don't see having a home in Commander, so it's mostly commons and uncommons, and a few bulk rares. This is definitely one of my favorite products. I'm a pretty casual player, so just having a couple of fun instant games ready to go is awesome! Thanks for the analysis, Prof!

I think what I like most about this product is not only the infinite replayability, but the future potential. Themes could come down after the initial run that really help strengthen the overall mashups. Weaker packs can be switched for stronger ones, and vice versa! That and people with massive collections, creating their own themes. It's the kind of Pick Up and Play that can really make this fun and exciting.
I’m pleased that you have reviewed the pack for what it is: Smash Up MtG. I have watched some unboxing videos where they’ve ignored that. I’m going to wait until it’s available for a reasonable price but in the mean time I can play it on arena 😊
I'm so excited for when this comes out in the UK, it seems really fun! I love the idea of being able to do it repeatedly as well by breaking down the decks into their two halves and then randomly picking a different two packs, to see what you get!! Honestly this is a breath of fresh air, given the whole mess of double masters.
I would love to be able to collect one of each theme too (maybe even one of each pack version for each theme) but the main problem is the probably high number of boxes I would have to buy for that to happen... I doubt many people would be ready to resell me their packs as is without asking for a very high margin (especially the dumb "mythic" rarity boosters).
Hmmm, a JumpStart "cube" sounds like a lot of fun, but I can't really afford a box right now... ...wait, I can make my own half-decks! Thanks for the idea, Prof!
@@ezes.5125 I doubt it. I feel like you are being quite butthurt. How about we talk about what happened? Perhaps you deserved to be blocked. A more interesting question would be, why are you still here, then? But, let's not focus on that.
Jumpstart is really exactly what I want out of a physical product as someone who mostly plays MTGArena and prefers limited to constructed. I think I might buy a box if I can find one at a reasonable price and put each half deck in its own package and use it as a way to teach the high school kids in the Anime/Gaming Club I run how to play. I loved Smash Up for the same reason as Jumpstart MTG - nearly endless variety and replayability without the overwhelming ask of deckbuilding and collecting.
i'm super excited that JumpStart is an unlimited print. I was a little concerned about the shortage of prints, and was originally thinking that it was going to be a one-time thing. Glad i checked out this video. I'll also have to look in on the Cubeamajigs resealable packs, I was trying to figure out a way to still be able to do that random draft mechanic of this set.
“Something for everyone” vs “Not everything is for you” Interesting contrast. Seems the former could be more lucrative (and is definitely operationally simpler) than the latter.
Sadly not. If the 'not for everyone' product was bought by 25% of players, but brought in 5× the money, then they just made 125% profit. I don't think that's the case, but I think it's where they are aiming
I bought 2 packs without knowing what they were, looked up this video to see if there were any rules difference and stuff. Prof as a beginner I LOVE these! They're so neat and I want to buy another pair to make a new deck! Was around $12 with change from Walmart (no gamestore around my area). Love it! I got Enchanted (White) and Spellcaster (Red)
Update: I've gone so far down the rabbit hole! I've been getting pack consistently to play with my friend. I now have Angels Mill Enchanted Under the Sea Wizards Spellcasting Spooky To any new players or people fan of quirky games like these! Totally worth! I'm going to be holding off on any new buys... its starting to rack up waaayyy to much!
Immediately after watching the part suggesting the Cubeamajigs, my son and I purchased a bundle of them as we had the same idea of keeping the decks separate for repeated fun game nights, and this works fantastic, thank you so much for the suggestion. Now to find some Jumpstart...
Hey Professor, I'm a newer player and even newer viewer, and I just wanted to say I really appreciate your sticking up for the consumer in these reviews - "you paid money for the product, yes? Well, then you deserve to not get a defective product in exchange for that hard-earned cash." Great stuff. :)
Hey, newer viewer! Just want to say welcome! Also, yeah, he’s been sticking up for the consumer for years now. It never fails to make me happy as a viewer, and a player.
Good morning Professor! I have to say I personally have been really enjoying Jumpstart- it's fun to see if you can improvise and pull out a win with 2 random packs!
I do really hope Jumpstart sticks as a product. I love it's design and want this to be one of the premiere non-standard methods of reprints and supporting new players. They should definitely keep doing masters sets, not like double masters though, But this is basically the product I've wanted for a long time. This is how you get me, someone who typically only buys singles for eternal formats, to buy boosters.
Hey Prof, I just wanted to say how much of an impact your videos have had on me these past few weeks. As someone who battles anxiety and depression and has recently started using this amazing game as an escape, your videos provide a comforting vibe, while also teaching me about Magic. I just wanted to say that your impact goes well beyond the MTG game by itself. Thank you.
Just got back into playing again and I wanted to get more bang for my buck. Came across your channel and saw this video. I liked the info you gave out on the booster box so much I made the purchase! (Made sure the booster box was under a $100) I was a little worried about getting my booster box online but I did get lucky. No problems with any tampering since I ordered directly from Amazon. None of my locals shops had any in stock or I would have bought from them. I am happy with my purchase especially since the boosters have a set type of play mechanic and themes. That I can easily upgrade or modify with additional cards!!! Keep up the good work and the videos!!!
I was very hyped for this product the second it was announced. I have a few friends/family members who are casually interested in Magic - meaning, if you give them a deck, they'll play a few games, but aren't interested in owning their own cards. This product is perfect for that situation since people can just grab some cards and play. I preordered a couple boxes a couple months ago (if/when I'll ever get them is another story), and I'm very excited to play. The fact that there are some actually decent cards in the packs are just an extra bonus. This and Mystery Boosters are the best products of 2020 (and I'm hoping Commander Legends follows the same path).
JumpStart plays a lot like UnSanctioned, a reusable format similar to that of a board game. I seriously considered buying a box and getting some of those resealable 'cubeamajigs' and keep em together for a replayable limited experience. But when a box costs $249 CAD or $11.99 CAD per booster, that's not a feasible plan. Hopefully they continue to print these by the boat-load to lower prices to where they should be. Also, I'm rather disappointed that the paper packs only come with ONE of the unique JumpStart lands and the rest of the basics are M21. What a wasted opportunity and shady way to drive up prices for a non-foil basic land.
Happy to see your review match up with what I was expecting from the product. We're (3 player household) most interested in turning this into a cube. It will work especially well for our 9-year old. Because the packs are shrinkwrapped inside the outer sleeves, I'm hoping places will sell them with the themes revealed. Then we can get the ones without any chase cards for a reasonable price. Otherwise, definitely waiting for the reprints booster box-wise. By comparison, we also had a lot of fun drafting Mystery Boosters but not even considering Double Masters.
Can I request a game play video where you teach a new player magic with this product? Maybe get a Yu-Gi-Oh player or Pokemon player since those cross over videos do well?
Just my opinion but I actually kinda like the high percentage of misprints. My lgs has already stated that the lands will be allowed as functional reprints of the original duals, and misprints are just fun as long as they are legible.
i love this product. im going to do what you said and wait for the price to go down and buy a couple of boxes that way me and my buddies always have something to play. thank you for the video.
I'm surprised you were so glowing about the gameplay. I've found the games to be very similar to planeswalker deck games, with very few exciting games. While the cards are better than PW decks, the build of the decks leads to similar games that aren't terribly interactive or exciting. Otherwise I agree it is a very good product, atleast for new or casual players. Great video as ever discussing the product comprehensively.
I also was reminded of the plansewalker deck gameplay. Maybe I'm jaded after 25 years, but I found it a little disappointing. That said, I still think Jumpstart is a great idea, and I hope they continue with it.
What's interesting about all the misprints is how wizards had to change their norm printing method it was so difficult to change the printing method they almost didn't make the set
I agree with your assessment and think that JumpStart is a home run and a great "open and play" set. I'd like to see more meaningful reprints in future editions, though. And I'd like the lands to be special in some way, like maybe unique artwork or fun borders or full art type stuff. If they do this every summer, I'll buy a box and do some fun sealed events with it.
I am so glad that someone else gets the ability of JumpStart to become an infinitely replayable game ala SmashUp. Thank you so much. I felt I was all alone in the world with everyone else on Reddit telling me that the game was for the reprints and not to be used in the way I (we) envisioned. Loved this review. Also, JumpStart is a heck of a lot of fun! A++
Hey, those are my misprint Phyrexian cards! I was wondering where you found the pics? I’m assuming the Facebook misprint group(where my gf posted them) but was just curious.
vmcampos they all had white spots all over them like one of the ink passes was messed up, and one was missing big chunks of ink. You can see how they all look kinda blurry in the video. It was on every single card in the pack in various levels of how bad it was.
I’m current waiting to get my box till prices go down. I really love the idea I’m a judge and game design student and using it as a teaching tool and party game is really what excites me!! Can’t wait for the next print
My dad and I bought a box and played through the whole thing in one night. It was some of the most fun me and my dad have had playing Magic. 10/10 would play all night again
This set is still an incredible financial value and a lot of fun years later. You can often spot them on Amazon for about $85-95, sometimes as low as $75 regularly, and my first 6 packs out of 24 had about $60 of value cards, nearly an entire box if you catch it around $75 like I did. Perhaps I just got lucky, but I got a Terror of the Peaks ($35), Cathar's Crusade ($11), and two Herald Horns ($8 each). In a quarter of a box. That's insane. And best of all, it's of course a replayable, enjoyable gameplay experience that makes a fantastic starting point to design a cube for drafting or simply reusing the packs over and over (while probably proxying the money cards). It, alongside commander precons, are one of the best ways to teach someone new how to play, and provide a somewhat-similar experience to draft or sealed with just two people, at less cost, with higher potential payout. HIGHLY recommended. Just make sure you get either the original one (shown here) or the 2022 version. Avoid the set-themed ones at all costs, they are not true jumpstart and lack that strong financial value and gameplay experience.
Great vid Prof, always feels like you're looking out for us magic players when it comes to making sure we spend our money wisely and don't get ripped off! Love your videos, keep up the great work! :)
I should mention, I managed to score a box for not too high a mark up price. Brought it home, cracked a couple packs with my roommate, played a few games. First game I opened the themes Smashing and Feathered Friends. Next game I opened 2 Feathered Friends. I thought that was odd, because of how many different themes there are. I cracked the rest of the box, and there was a total of 5 Feathered Friends, 4 Smashing, 2 Treefolk, and 2 Archaeology, and 2 Predatory. Be aware that it may not be as random as it seems. Maybe I got unlucky and most boxes arent like that.
I got this product as a way to teach my cousin how to play mtg and even tough I have yet to do so I am happy that I got it. I found the price higher than I expected, but paying a little extra is worth it for the experience she'll get!
Played Jumpstart for the first time on Arena earlier. I... underestimated it. This is a very very very good set. If casual products from now on are going to look like this, they'll be just as big a hit as the annual Commander precons. ...You know, as long as they can fix the production limitations.
As a returning player this is a pretty compelling product, tempted to get a handful and just play around some, it may just pull me away from Arena for a while.
Hi, I'm new to Tolarian Community College and Magic the gathering. I really like your videos and also, thanks for the advice about not paying for the inflated price of Jump-start. Can't wait to see the price decrease so that I could get my hands on some. Great video 👍
This is a product where the financial aspect was of no interest to me. But checking online, it was difficult to find anything about the gameplay. So thanks so much for, as always, finding the right tone.
I was sceptical about jumpstart, but I guess I'll get one box when they're available again. I like the idea of having a box of random decks that are actually good and playable over and over.
I haven't played jumpstart but I did get UnSanctioned and the concept of mixing two decks together is super fun. Hopefully Wizards keeps doing this in the future, it's a really good idea

Update: I've gone so far down the rabbit hole! I've been getting pack consistently to play with my friend. I now have
Angels
Mill
Enchanted
Under the Sea
Wizards
Spellcasting
Spooky
To any new players or people fan of quirky games like these!
Wow this new set of Key Forge Looks amazing !!
Reminds of another silly cardgame
Good morning Professor! I have to say I personally have been really enjoying Jumpstart- it's fun to see if you can improvise and pull out a win with 2 random packs!
Finally ... you touch on whether it is fun or not! Love it!!!
I really enjoyed the music in this video. Fantastic information and quality. The cube packs to make JumpStart repayable is brilliant!!
Thank you.
I second that! Thank you Prof
Watch the profs video from around Aug 17th, 2017. Brian talks about those same struggles we both share. th-cam.com/video/m8PvZaeS-yc/w-d-xo.html
"5-10 years later when the pandemic is over"
5-10 years later professor: it was a joke I swear.
I hope the vaccine comes out next year
@@CoolVictor2002 yes im from the future in we have vaccins in 2021
I was very hyped for this product the second it was announced.
"Sorry, Pringles lovers" DAMN he never miss!
I appreciate your honest content. I'm from Germany and I miss something like that over here.
More like: If I Seto Kaiba can buy......... wait this product isn't available in your country. :pensive:
Screw the rules, you have money
Very succinct ending, Professor. Again, you show yourself to be an effective and clear proponent of consumer rights
This idea seems nice. I hope some shops keep the low value packs intact for resale.
Can I request a game play video where you teach a new player magic with this product? Maybe get a Yu-Gi-Oh player or Pokemon player since those cross over videos do well?
Very nice idea. (I wouldn't mind someone foreign to card games or games though)
That text conclusion was super handy in my low data state at the moment. Thnx prof
Thanks TCG this has got to be one of your most positive reviews of late. Must be good!
What's interesting about all the misprints is how wizards had to change their norm printing method it was so difficult to change the printing method they almost didn't make the set
Got my box in Canada and my friend and I had an amazing time playing yesterday! I have 3 semi stamped uncommons (rare stamp is visable)
Me coming back to buy the original jumpstart at a reasonable price of $87 a box like the prof told me to.
Amazon had it at this price yesterday
I agree with your assessment and think that JumpStart is a home run and a great "open and play" set. I'd like to see more meaningful reprints in future editions, though. And I'd like the lands to be special in some way, like maybe unique artwork or fun borders or full art type stuff. If they do this every summer, I'll buy a box and do some fun sealed events with it.
"the Smash up it is supposed to be"
I saw what you did there, prof.
I really like the idea of sleeving them back and keep them stored.
Seems more like they wanted to have their own version of keyforge
Yes and it is awesome.
I'm Finnish and I fear that like with the Mystery boosters we won't have much, if any of Jump Start boosters available here
Reddit posts, mtg websites, youtube videos.... only Tolarian explained EXACTLY what JumpStart is! Thank you for CLARITY!
“Jumpstart contains no foil cards
Sorry Pringles lovers”
Lol
This is the game my wife, kids and I have been playing for the last 8 years. I'm so excited to be getting our packs soon.
Hey, those are my misprint Phyrexian cards! I was wondering where you found the pics? I’m assuming the Facebook misprint group(where my gf posted them) but was just curious.
Cool!
What was misprint about them??
vmcampos they all had white spots all over them like one of the ink passes was messed up, and one was missing big chunks of ink. You can see how they all look kinda blurry in the video. It was on every single card in the pack in various levels of how bad it was.
I love how you're doing "financial value - part 1" in the best Mr. Plinket voice!
Magic the Gathering: Jump Start was the most disappointing thing since my son.
"Everyone loves Tinybones!"
You sure about that?
Of you don't love Tinybones, you don't love Magic.
GET OUT.
😂
I’m current waiting to get my box till prices go down. I really love the idea I’m a judge and game design student and using it as a teaching tool and party game is really what excites me!! Can’t wait for the next print
Man, if they keep lowering the quality and the chinese proxies keep improving, their levels will cross in some moment.
That happened a while ago. You think WotC has bad QA now? Go look through some revised bulk sometime!
My dad and I bought a box and played through the whole thing in one night. It was some of the most fun me and my dad have had playing Magic. 10/10 would play all night again
It is said that if you come this early, the professor gives you a like
have a like
@@TolarianCommunityCollege OMG, thank you professor, I love your content!!!
Long time viewer here. I just got my Ultimate Guard Smarthive you reviewed and I gotta say i was not disappointed. Thanks for all the honest reviews!
“Sorry, pringles lovers” 😂 lmao
Wow as someone who hasn't played in over 4 years this sounds really fun! Thanks for making the video :)
Got a box last Friday from my LGS, and had a blast with my son and friends throwing packs together. Highly recommend!
waiting for it to be available in my area. hoping to have some fun times with my mentor
Love the Smash Up reference at the beginning! Love that game!
I almost always enjoy your videos, but I think this one was above average. Great job man!
Great product, I look forward to buying a box and playing with friends, but only at $100 or bellow.
I've been playing it on Arena and it's a lot of fun! It really helps me figure out the way some cards are played!
Seeing the physical product has helped me imagine JumpStart better on MTGA. Great video as usual thx professor
What will be great is if/when they print more jumpstart and we can mix the different jumpstart sets together for ever expanding game play!
This convinced me to cube this so i can introduce magic to new players in my community
I’m just starting to get into Magic, once the prices go down I think I’ll try this out.
Loved the Pauper cameo there!
Jump Start is a Homerun! Amazing concept, nothing to argue about, if only it came out last year or next year.
I'm building a Mono-Red Tribal Dragon deck and the reprints here have helped me a lot!
I had no idea what jump start was all about but this video explained it perfectly. I am going to buy a box and see if I can get my son into MTG now.
Seems fun for my casual group for some quick party games.
I was sceptical about jumpstart, but I guess I'll get one box when they're available again. I like the idea of having a box of random decks that are actually good and playable over and over.
Love your channel! Long time fan!
I haven't played jumpstart but I did get UnSanctioned and the concept of mixing two decks together is super fun. Hopefully Wizards keeps doing this in the future, it's a really good idea
