In this video, I show how I painted my clone chest plate using the budget friendly Drizzle D1 spray gun and a small portable compressor. This is not a comprehensive review of the spray gun, but I will show how I set it up and let you be the judge of how it came out.

Most importantly Have Fun
really been enjoying these videos you have been putting out, been 3d printing for about 5 years and never even thought about using automotive primers, clear coats or spray guns, but because of these videos I made my first visit to a local automotive paint supply place, told the guys why I was there and what I was planning on doing and they were great.
That's great to hear. All of the local automotive paint suppliers, have been great for me to work with also. I think they enjoy when someone is doing something different. Don't be afraid to ask questions, and keep trying different things.
Most of all just have fun.
@@TheLastLayer111 I think your right, I think they dig that you are working on stuff they don't normally deal with, because once I told them, two other guys came to the counter, they really explained each of the high build primers and even ask if I would come back and show it to them.....uhhhhh, sure
Been watching your videos the past few days and have learned so much. You are a great teacher. Please keep up the great work.
thank you
Nice!. Having never used a gun I'd get value from a demo of cleaning it out
If I do a complete review, Ill add that. But its not hard, I just remove the cap, needle and seat and wash everything with a little lacquer thinner. Wipe the cup out with lacquer thinner and you're good.
👍
I’ve always wondered if a paint gun would work with my pancake compressor. Nice to know it looks like it will work. Keep up the great videos. Need to get your subscriber count up.
Honestly I made the video, not knowing if it would work either. Like you, I always though about it, and figured I would give it a try. I'm going to keep trying things on the channel, I'm sure that some wont work, but that part of learning and having fun.
As for subscriber count, I'm always open to suggestions. When I started this channel, I didn't know if anyone would have any interest, I really just wanted to share what I have learned. This is an awesome community, and I am happy to give back in any way.
You make some great videos, I'm working on a Helldivers 2 Cosplay for dragoncon this year, and I'm gonna try your 2k primer method later this week, keep up the good work!
Thats gonna be a awesome build. Helldivers is on my bucket list.
Good Luck and Enjoy
Another great video. I have a big job in the shop right now and I'm going to try your system to do the surface prep. wish me luck. lol
For sure good Luck, let me know how it works out for you.
Very interesting video, thank you. Make sure you use the proper mask with the 2 part paint, it's a health thing! Thank you again for your informative videos.
Absolutely, these chemicals are strong. I talked about it in the video where I was showing how to actually apply the clear.
I would think for helmets it takes more finesse, as they helmet is rounded and might have different facing areas. That would make a great video, do 3 or 4 helmets with different angles/edges so we can see the best way to paint each. Thanks for all the info. At some point I would love to use real 2k clear on my props.
Depending on the helmet, some can actually be easier, if its a smooth round helmet like Iron Man.
Like anything, it takes some patience and practice. You can have the best spray gun in the world, and it still boils down to individual technique.
Another thing to add to my never ending list... This was super interesting, thanks!
Love the vid and the channel...amazing job! I have bought everything you demo'd, high build primer, glazing and 2k clear coat ...as well as the spray gun ...qq...can you video how to remove orange peel? Havent had a chance yet to do the 2k sparybbut knowing my luck i will encounter it ;) many thx again and always look forward to your next vid! Ty ty
Glad to hear you are going to give it a try. I think you will be surprised at how well it works. Be patient, do some test pieces and take your time. Its really about developing a technique.
Removing orange peel is no different than wet sanding and buffing it out on a car. I do plan on eventually putting a video together, but with a little practice, you won’t need to. I typically don’t buff any of my pieces. They are straight out of the gun. Its not as difficult as it looks.
Good luck
Good stuff! Really enjoying your channel. I'm definitely considering getting something like this.
Are you still considering trying one of the electric spray paint guns to see how they work? I think you mentioned that in one of your other videos.
I am, in the near future. I have been doing research, and it seems that some of the "decent" electric spray guns, can cost just as much as the set up here. So I really want to find a cost effective alternative.
4:46 Like a smaller airbrush. Okay.
9:31 I may have to invest in a paint booth to be used outside as well. Don't have much room in the house.
I spray outside all the time, you may get a small bug or a little dust in the paint, but any of that can be easily we sanded out and buffed, that is one of the added bonuses of using automotive products.
Great tutorial. I want to get into 3d printing, what printer would you recommend?
Thats a good question, my go-to answer is typically “whatever is in your budget”. Modern printers have come a long way. You need to determine, how big you want to print and if you need multiple colors. I have several printers and love the bambu (very plug-and-play) but they can be a bit more expensive and are restricted by size on larger prints. I also have the anycubic kobra max and that has been great for the larger prints.
Check out some reviews and get an idea for how big you need it.
Most modern printers will output very acceptable quality.
getting ready to spray my r2 d2 what you recommend on clear flat or gloss ?
I did the body with a matte clear, i did the blue parts with gloss clear. The dome I sprayed with aluminum and did not clear it. I think I used rustoleum professional aluminum.
I have the same gun, and compressor, i set up the gun the exact same way you did here, but when i spray continuously it only sprays for 7-8 seconds before the compressor kicks on, compared to yours where you got 16 seconds of spray time. Any idea why that is?
Check your regulator, i keep mine pretty low, with that setup. The compressor will kick on, but it wont matter until the actual pressure on the regulator drops. Play with it, you can probably even spray a bit longer before the spray pattern starts degrading.
@@TheLastLayer111 Adjust the regulator on the compressor itself right? What value do you have yours set to?
I have the regulator on the compressor turned all the way up. In essence, you dont need the regulator on the compressor.
Then adjust the regulator on the gun down. I keep mine at the bottom of the green area, that will minimize the air used. Doing those 2 things will help conserve air.
Take small breaks while you are spraying, to let the compressor catch up, the clear has some flash time so small breaks (couple minutes)wont hurt.
Please, let me know how that works.
@@TheLastLayer111 I did just that, just to clarify, my compressor is fully open, the guns regulator is just at the bottom of the green. Then I start spraying, the compressor kicks on around 8 seconds, but the psi doesn't drop 10 pounds until around 16 seconds, that's what we're looking for right? The compressor kicking on isn't necessarily the bad thing, it's when the gun starts falling off the regulator that you need to stop and take a break?
Exactly. dont worry about the compressor kicking on, If you listen close, My compressor was kicking on in the background and I continued spraying. The only thing that matters is what that regulator is at on the spray gun.
You also don't have to wait for the compressor to fill completely back up and cycle off to continue spraying, take short breaks and make sure the regulator doesn't completely drop.
you will get a feel for it. Enjoy.
