To address a common criticism of this video:
I understand that Marvel took a bunch of obscure comic book heroes and turned them into massively popular properties, but there's a huge difference between comic books and video games. You can take just about any superhero and turn them into a cool movie series. The very concept of a superhero makes for broadly appealing cinema. These characters also have long histories with loads of story arcs to choose from. Comic books are already so similar to movies, you can look at any series and already see the movie potential. It translates so well.
Nintendo has a bunch of extremely Japanese-flavored properties, many of which started as surreal and minimally developed NES games. Most of them have very little story to speak of. They've always focused on gameplay first. They would have to build these universes almost entirely from scratch and transform these properties into something very different.
Marvel took superheroes who punch and shoot bad guys and made movies that everyone liked because everyone likes watching people punch and shoot bad guys. Expecting that same audience to watch a video about little plant people or talking animals in space or whatever is not reasonable. I'm not saying Nintendo can't do ANYTHING with their properties, or that any and all projects are doomed to fail. But I just don't think the Marvel comparison works at all. This is apples and oranges. Adapting completely different works created using completely different philosophies from completely different mediums.
I agree, it's not a good comparison
Most comic books have more traditional stories in them, whereas a lot of Nintendo games are more focused on just being good games, meaning they wouldn't translate as well to film. It's a good point.
It feels like you're making two or three points in one post. I agree with some of it. Marvel has a formula that is mass-marketable and applies to the vast majority of their properties (and nearly everything they have adapted as a film). It's easier to come up with a successful line of films in their situation because it all appeals to the same sort of audiences. It builds a cohesive fanbase in a way that Nintendo can't count on having on a company-wide basis. Nintendo would have the challenge of figuring out how to market each franchise they try.
I disagree about the obscurity point for a couple of reasons. First, the idea that the MCU's early lead characters were obscure is a misconception. Yes, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and the Incredible Hulk did not have Spider-Man or X-Men levels of popularity prior to the MCU, but they were the most notable characters Marvel had the film rights to at the time the MCU started. They were all staples of popular culture even if the public's knowledge of them was kiddie pool shallow. Sure, the audience might have thought Hulk's name was David because of the Lou Ferrigno show and they might mostly know how the Avengers line-up functions through the Justice Friends parody in Dexter's Lab, but it's not like they went out of the gate with Black Widow or Ant-Man. The lead characters had all been heavily adapted in Marvel's 90's animated outings and had been featured prominently in video games across two decades before those movies happened.
Second, I think you overemphasize the size of the existing fanbase and downplay the concerns over if the games can be adapted well. Games that are less popular, but which are very story-driven could theoretically be great material for adaption. Consider the case of Earthbound. It follows a very simple archetypal "Hero's Journey" plot structure with enough twists and turns that can easily be truncated to its key plot beats and fit into a two hour movie with no story/plot/dialogue invention required on the part of a studio and with plenty of opportunity to pander to adults' nostalgia for childhood and to give children the kind of wholesome messages family films revolve around. The game's fanbase is microscopic compared to Donkey Kong or Luigi's Mansion, but at least the studio wouldn't have to go through draft after draft of a script trying to figure out how you squeeze two hours of entertainment out of a guy sucking ghosts up with a vaccuum or a monkey chasing a heap of bananas. Somehow the Mario Movie ended up actually happening, but that kind of directionless, tortured writing process is exactly how you end up getting serious film projects valued at hundreds of millions of dollars stuck in development hell in the writing room. The more Mario series movies that exist at any point in time, the harder it will be to give the spin-offs some semblance of a plot.
Of course just going for what works and building off of it is the more likely course and would be considered safer by Nintendo's film partners, therefore would be more likely to happen. I don't mean to suggest because Earthbound would be easier to adapt that it would be more likely to happen, but when you look at the failure to adapt the Metroid movie, I think it should be apparent that the same problem has a risk of looming over the copious Mario spin-offs that seem realistic at this juncture. I think anyone endeavoring to adapt Nintendo franchises must seriously consider if a faithful adaptation can be made without having to bend over backwards to make it work as a movie. Sometimes, as with the Mario movie, the fanbase is big enough that it makes sense to do that anyway. I'm inclined to think workable source material is better for a production than attaching it to an already popular series. I get that Hollywood conventionally assumes they have the games' fanbase as viewers by default, but that usually isn't true if you look at the history of video game adaptations.
Not sure if you knew Arlo, but Splatoon does have a manga, so an animated show wouldn't be too far off if they focused more on the manga rather than the games
On a positive note - this will actually encourage Nintendo to CARE about the stories, characters and lore in their games from this point forward. I don't think its a coincidence that we received Paper Mario TTYD and Super Mario RPG remakes (very story-intensive games as far as the Mario IP goes,) within a year or so after the release of the Mario Bros movie.
A Kirby movie that is marketed as a cute kids movie and then ends up being about eldritch horrors is the dream
That's expected at this point, what i'm curious about if that does happen (Kirby movie) is if the team behind the games will be able to not pressure whoever makes the movie into inserting Galacta/Morpho Knight into it like they've been doing in the games for the past decade
@@Duskoolprobably just a cameo in the background.
A Kirby movie would be crazy 🗿
the trailer is all “happy go lucky” and ends showing the R rating
I doubt it would happen but if a kirby movie is made, one thing i would want from it is for kirby to not talk, just have him make the cute noises he makes in the games and show how he's feeling by his actions and facial expressions, the kirby anime right back at ya shows that can work.
But like i said i doubt that will happen and kirby will probably be voiced by some celebrity.
Nintendo: *creates Metroid*
Movie Director: " Can we make a Metroid movie featuring Samus?"
Nintendo: "....What's a Samus?"
Also isnt Metroid based on the Alien(s) movie? Making it similar to Alien(s) would be derivative. They would have to do something completely different to not look similar and at the same time, make it feel like a "Nintendo" movie. Zelda movie and Metroid are the only ones im interested in
@@podunk3202 Considering what Mario and Sonic did, I feel like a "origin story" setup would work for Samus. Showing her growing up and being raised by Chozo, and her eventually taking on the job as a bounty hunter and dealing with the Space Pirates, stuff like that. That's how I would do it.
@@Joeynator3000 I a high quality grim animated film for Metroid would be as great as a Ghibli film for Zelda, but seeing as Zelda is going the live action route I am not so sure. Though the advertising might do wonders for Metroid regardless!
Ever since the success of the first Mario movie, I have thought how great a Metroid movie could be. Children's Horror is a woefully underrepresented genre at the theater. "Coraline", "Monster House" something like that but with Metroid's claustrophobic, isolationist, alien jump scares for kids. It could be awesome.
@@jamesmontgomery7074 I...honestly can't see Metroid as a children's movie like that, I feel like it'd be something like a PG-13 movie instead.

Benedict Cumberbatch as King Boo would be the stupidest and funniest thing ever.

Mark Hamill would fit better

I'm laughing maniacally, thinking about a Kirby movie being rated R, and people won't find out why till the climax.
Eldritch apocalypse Kirby
Dedede’s body begins jittering a moment after taking hold of the dark matter orb. He collapses, but then his body rises as if puppeted with invisible strings.
“Kirby,” his voice says, off-kilter. “We don’t need to fight anymore, Kirby. I’m happy now.”
Dedede slowly turns around, his head turning farther and faster than it should.
“Kirby, please hold this. It’s so wonderful,” Dedede’s voice slurs and droops. His eyes now face Kirby, pitch black. From them leak a dark, starry liquid that streams down his face and stains his robes. “I can see the universe, Kirby. I can see all of it.” His voice sounds choked up, as if on the verge of crying. “Just… hold… it…”
Kirby appears mildly concerned at most. He wonders what flavor of ice cream he will have when he gets home.
“I CAN SHOW YOU INFINITY, KIRBY.” Dedede’s body limps toward Kirby. He coughs up more of the dark, starry liquid as if he were drowning in it. “IT’S B…E…A…U…T…I…F…U…L…”
The starry liquid now leaks from every part of his body. Dark veins pulse as he quivers uncontrollably. His neck bends back and snaps as his skin bursts. The flesh melts from his body, his hand still clutching the dark matter orb. With the last bit of air still left in his lungs, Dedede gurgles out, “H…A…P…P…Y…”
Flesh and bone alike dissolve into that starry liquid, puddling around where Dedede’s body once was. The puddle widens and deepens. Staring into it, it seems to go on forever. It rises and expands, appearing to wrap around everything in sight, consuming the shrine where the dark matter orb was held. Kirby no longer feels the ground beneath his feet.
Something reaches deep into Kirby’s mind. With the guttural force of a supernova, it speaks only one word: *”EMBRACE”*
Kirby looks into the void and sees staring back at him with a trillion starry eyes the Infinity of the Universe itself. It sought him out to consume him. It seethes with desire and envy. It now embraces its only true rival, the only other truly infinite cosmic being. All it needs to do is crack him open and absorb his infinitessence.
Strawberry ice cream with rainbow sprinkles, Kirby decides. But dessert will have to wait. He needs to eat dinner first.

Okay, but, a mockumentary about the Splatoon world would be REALLY funny to see in one way or another
that's a crazy ass idea that i would never have thought of that i love
It's a movie largely following Agent 3 and an OC group of squid kids and an Octoling fighting against the Octarian army, with occasional gags of an overlaid David Attenborough-esque voice narrating the peculiar behaviors of the Squid Kids, Octarians, and other sea animal-people that make up the Splatoon world. There's at least one gag where a side character like Sheldon can apparently hear the narrator.
Ok releasing a Squid Research Lab movie would be really great
I was more thinking of a semi-serous take on the series. About the nuclear war and the cause of a new society. Weird for the sake of weird.
Yeah.... That's not gonna make more than $10...
Kid Icarus footage over the section about IPs that aren’t reasonably popular enough to be adapted was a punch to the gut
All in all I agree but man let me hope 😂
As someone that absolutely loves IPs like Kid Icarus and ARMS I always get fucked over in these kinds of things lol they aren’t insanely popular but I would still love to see some kind of tv show adaptation for them both. I’m gonna keep dreaming, even if its for the rest of my life.
Tom Holland would play a good pit ngl
All leading up to the massive world wide event.
Captain N: Game Over.
Captain N: The First Nintender
Guardians of the Super Mario Galaxy
Captain N: Console War
The Nintenders: Game End
The Legend of Zelda in the Timelines of Madness
etc
I like that reality. Let's live there. 🙂
They probably won't, but Nintendo probably could get away with a Netflix series reboot of Captain N where it's him and 3-4 Nintendo C-D listers going through various Nintendo properties saving the day. Maybe bring back Mother Brain, King Hippo and Eggplant Wizard as the primary villains, with some surprise pick as an overarching villain of the series acting as their boss.
From the moment it was announced that Illumination was making the Mario Movie, I firmly believed that one of their future Nintendo projects would be Pikmin. A studio known for making finanical blockbusters about goofy little minions who talk gibberish? Seems like the perfect fit for Pikmin and, since Miyamoto's already done the short films, I really don't think we're too far off! A Pikmin movie would also be the best way to finally break the series out of its relatively niche following. 🌻
THIS. This right here.
Yeah i do think the story of pikmin has alot of potential in movie form i mainly referring to the first game's story
If people already aren’t interested in pikmin games idk why people would show up for a movie with them
Whattup Rogersbase?
Louie is set to rival Bowser in popularity if done well. Also hi! Nice channel.
A Kirby movie would be cool. I think Wall-e is very Kirby like and shows that largely non talking characters can work if done well.
Yeah i agree i mean the kirby anime right back at ya showed that could work but sadly kirby most likely will just be voiced by some celebrity but hey will just have to wait and see
@@jskywalker58John Cena: Hey it’s me, Kirby. Poyo poyo.

A Star Fox movie is actually something I feel isn’t just possible, but even within the realm of “Yeah-we’ll-make-that” territory. Illumination loves their animal Movies, and an animated action space comedy starring a team of heroic animal characters is something they would want to sell.
100% agree

"You are 'bad guy'. But this does not mean you are bad guy." - Zangeif
i want a bowser bachelor show
A Pikmin series where they make it almost a documentary from Olimar’s point of view could work really well. They could have it be more in the realm of horror if we see the world from his perspective.
I’ve been saying this ever since we saw the cast of the first Mario movie
King Boo played by Willem Dafoe in a Luigi’s Mansion movie
"no no no, you can't do this to me, you know how much I sacrificed?!?" - king boo when Luigi starts vacuuming him up at the climax
THAT'S PERFECT AND I NEED IT
And dan aykroyd as professor e gadd
One place I disagree is Kirby. The fact that people don't flock to Pixar anymore means that the market is ripe for animated family friendly movies. Kirby is the best bet for that after Mario for that, and I think execs will bank on that..
No Kirby must be R rated in order to stay faithful. Kirby is an Eldridge horror and everyone must know that!
The fact that no one goes to see Pixar says that no one would go see Kirby. People wait for streaming, its too expensive to take kids to theaters
@@chiquita683 No one goes to see Pixar because the Pixar magic is gone, replaced by bland and forgettable movies that don't feel any different from the animated movies that Disney produces.
Kirby has brand recognition, which may help.
Personally I'm more looking forward to what they do on the TV side of things. We already know Kirby and Animal Crossing makes for great anime, and there is no reason to think that wouldn't go for most of their other franchises. It'd also be a really great feature of NSO if they released the episodes on there first.
I'd do anything for a Splatoon series that follows the adventures of specific idols and really leans into the eccentric lore of the franchise
@@birdflox1337 Omg I would love an ensemble cast of the idols intermittently hanging out and being friends and going on quirky adventures both mundane, slice of life and more action packed.
It really is kind of shocking how Nintendo hasn't announced anything on the TV side of things - especially now that movie industry is in a death spiral as far as quality, originality, box office numbers and general consumer interest goes. The pandemic changed everything in this regard. Streaming services, expensive prices & food, social media and noisy audience members have made the theater experience obsolete; it seems the only movies that do legitimately well these days are massive pop-culture "hype event" flicks that are either one or more of the following:
1 - Major (usually first-time) movie adaptations based off of a popular IP or brand (Barbie, Mario Bros, FNAF)
2 - legitimately good, passion-driven films and sequels, often backed by respected film makers (Oppenheimer, Top Gun, Dune,)
3- Visual spectacles that can only be fully appreciated through a big-screen viewing (James Cameron's Avatar, Spiderverse)
4- Family films that kids love - forcibly dragging parents, siblings and other relatives to cough up the money and watch it with them (Minions, Jurassic World)
Even then, points 1 & 3 aren't surefire guarantees for a successful sequel or potential movie series. If the quality is bad, then people will inevitably drop out and abandon it (see: Star Wars, Marvel, etc.) Example being, I don't predict a ton of people flocking to the FNAF sequel outside of fans because it was just THAT bad, and I personally have no interest in seeing the Mario Bros. sequel, as I wasn't impressed with the first movie. It'll still make its money thanks to kids dragging their parents & relatives to see it, but Arlo is right in this regard: unless if the quality of these movies improve, then interest WILL inevitably fizzle out - especially for the older "nostalgia-based" target demographics. This is just how it is for the modern movie landscape; TV shows honestly have an easier time now.
A stop-motion Paper Mario movie would be breathtaking.
Like a Lego movie vibe type thing
arlo namedropping my local zoo is insane ive never been more terrified in my life
You'll be plenty more terrified when the Scrabulars come down upon it.
I feel like any Zelda movie is gonna live and die by its art style.
The simple cartoon style works great for Mario, but for Zelda the art style has been as integral to the story as the actual plot itself. Like, if you swapped the art style of Twilight Princess and Wind Wakers both stories would be worse for it.
It’s live action
@@chunkysaurus785Nowadays, live action movies have as much or more animation work than animated movies, with all the CGI. I say my point still stands.
The live action Zelda movie might be amazing, but I still wish we could have an animated Zelda movie with an art style similar to the games.
@@mitwhitgaming7722 Sure, but the "art atyle" of that animation is pretty much set in stone as "realistic" ir else the actors will look out of place
Looking at the director’s recent work with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, I’m very confident he’ll manage to give the Zelda world the appropriate tone it needs for a live-action movie
The live action Zelda movie might be amazing, but I still wish we could have an animated Zelda movie with an art style similar to the games.
Plus with all the different races and other fantasy creatures there obviously gonna have to use lots of cgi so at that point why not just have it be animated.
The only explanation i can think of for why its gonna be live action is because if the america's dumb mindsetbof animation being a kids genre and not being able to tell serious stories despite that being disproven million's of times throughout animation's entire history
I agree that an animated movie would be preferable, but the games don't have an art style, do they? Wind Waker, Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild to name but three have completely different styles.
I definitely agree with you, but one thing that helps me to feel more excited about the live-action is wondering how they're going to make all the different races and creatures look, let alone the famous locations and dungeons. I already KNOW how they should look in an animated style. I'm excited to see my first live-action terrifying Skulltula, or Deku-Scrub, and I'm hoping the Zora and Goron don't look horrifying 😅 I'm excited for the shot of Link in full silhouette entering his first dungeon, and just how daunting and dark and huge it is- I'm hoping I'll be able to feel the scale of it viscerally. There are some things that a live-action can achieve that an animated film can't and vise-versa, and I really hope they go for it.
@@jskywalker58 I agree that's a huge factor. They take animation much more seriously in Japan, as a medium meant for any age, but it's still seen as a children's medium here.
@@jskywalker58 Really? That's the ONLY explanation you can think of? Why _should_ it be animated? Or better yet, why _shouldn't_ it be live-action? Give me an actual reason.
Animal Crossing would be great as a cute little stop-motion show like Pokemon Concierge.
Splatoon would HAVE to be a more serious adventure cartoon that takes its bizarre concepts completely seriously, it would simply be too good.
Splatoon would fare better as an anime, it's already extremely popular in Japan as is.
@@alexs29 I'm just saying cartoon because that's more all-encompassing, I'd be down for just about any animated art style.
Now you have me imagining a Splatoon anime from Studio Trigger. God that would be bonkers in all the best ways.
@@thesquishedelf1301 that would be incredible, though of course it may be a bit much to ask for. though, they did make EdgeRunners, I guess it wouldn't be completely unthinkable for them to work with Nintendo...
Doesn’t Splatoon already have a manga? A safe bet might be to just adapt that
I could see the entire Baby Metroid story making for a great potential movie. I imagine it being sort of like T2, just with the roles reversed so that Arnold (the baby) is the one who needs protecting. There would be a lot to establish as far as world building, make sure the Ceres Station scientists do a lot of hyping up for Mother Brain. The hardest part would be making up a motive for Mother Brain that didn't just boil down to consuming resources like the aliens in Independence Day. We would also definitely need to make sure the Space Pirates got some screen time, including the one who broke his back when he tried to use Morph Ball technology.
Now I can only think about them capitalizing on Mando and the child stuff
Mother Brain was designed to lead and bring order and found power through the Pirates. In the manga she actually offers Samus a position of leadership, to command the Pirates herself alongside Kraid and Ridley, which Samus of course refuses when Ridley’s ass shows up and sends Samus into PTSD-induced shock. This was prior to the events of Zero Mission.
I was inclined to say that the hard part there would be making everything between Ceres Station and the finale on Zebes interesting, but then I thought... you could expand the time Samus spends in "GF space" to be the majority of the movie. Almost like a Metroid movie set on Coruscant, with the Space Pirates lurking in the background, occasionally surfacing to threaten Samus and the GF's efforts to protect and study the Baby before the big "Attack on Ceres Station" happens as a sort of "narrative pacing analogue" to, say, Obi-Wan vs. Vader in A New Hope, shortly before the build up to the climactic finale.
Having the majority of the movie take place on Norion or something with the baby in custody would give ample opportunity to show Samus actually spending time with the little guy, too! And make it all the more heartbreaking when it reappears, monstrous and massive, and attacks her in the Space Pirates' base
Oh Hi NCS nice to see you here

17:00 A Metroid movie seems really possible just because of the prominence of Marvel because all you have to do is pit a Xenomorph against Iron Man and there's your Metroid movie right there.
I'd like to see a live action Iron Man as a morph ball!
Well it's true that Metroid took inspiration from Alien, the story pacing doesn't match up very; in the Alien movies you have Ripley terrified of the xenomorphs and constantly running for her life, but in Metroid Samus is a nearly unstoppable killing machine who mows down Metroids without too much difficulty.
Being honest metroid is the most holliwood friendly concept.
But im not sure nintendo wants metroid to be a violent holliwood action film.
@johnleonard9102 The answer is adapting Zero Mission. Show Samus at her earliest and least experienced.
I feel like the only way we would ever see some of the lesser known or obscure stuff is if they made them TV shows instead of movies
Personally i do think a franchise like zelda would work better a show than a film
TV/streamings seems like the best option actually, especially when the movie industry itself being in absolute shambles right now. Movie ticket & food prices are simply too expensive and the most profitable movie this year was Dune Part 2 (which didn't even gross a billion.) Having a few Nintendo IPs getting their own spinoff shows seems like a logical safety net choice at this point in time.
I think if they have enough hits and people have faith in the brand then they could easily pivot to more obscure IPs for shows/movies. Very similar to how the MCU did it
An animated Animal Crossing show where every episode a new villager moves in sounds really cute
I feel a great way to do a Smash Brothers movie is to make it like The Lego Movie. The characters in the intro to 64 and Melee basically establish that the characters are Toys/Figurines. That way it’s still a crossover that stands on its own and doesn’t have to interfere with the other movies and still be a big deal. That or doing something like Captain N again could work.
You don't see a Bowser movie? Really? That's a bizarre thing to think, Arlo.
How about Bowser clashing with another villain threatening his empire? Or him being a dad, teaching and raising Bowser Jr. to one day take the reigns as King of The Koopas?
Jack Black is already phenomenal, giving heart-to-heart speeches in his past movies, so playing Bowser as a dad is a goldmine.
Bowser would have one of those "Being a Dad developed me as a person" arcs
Now that I think about it Bowser is maybe the only major member of Mario’s cast that doesn’t have any solo spin offs.
Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Wario, and even Toad all have stand alone games, but not Bowser…
Perhaps that’s where Arlo is coming from, Bowser never gets spin offs so he wouldn’t get a spin off movie, which is a shame. I’d love a solo Bowser project.
@@Andythedrew1 Bowser's Inside Story is a close second to a completely solo Bowser experience.
That other villian could be wart the frog from mario 2, i wouldn't mind seeing him return
A la Despicable Me? It could work.
arlo this timeline made me middle aged of the first time thanks for the crisis
The Zelda movie is such a tricky subject because Zelda is practically MADE for animation. With that said, having seen Wes Ball's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, I truly believe he might be able to stick the landing. Clearly he has a vision, and I am going to trust he knows how important it is to make this a success.
I think a luigis mansion movie is VERY likely. He was in a dark spooky castle (that wasn't bowsers) IN the movie. We saw king boo in the wedding- I just can't imagine them not utilizing it. Especially since LM3 sold so well.
Tom holland dying of old age at 30 caught me off guard
Ganondorf's hand on the melee intro gave me this huge ping of melancholy, remembering how tantalizing of a hint that was. No internet to confirm, but rumors that he's actually in the game, then one day actually unlocking him? Those were beautiful days...
Honestly, I think the best angle to get a metroid movie would be for Mario 3 to be the smash bros movie and Samus to show up a bit like Sgt. Calhoun from Wreck-it Ralph. Where-in she's the competent badass straight-man character in a room of goofy weirdos. If it written well enough, that might actually get some momentum
I mean we got spider man in the MCU before he got his own movie. Samus could get the same treatment.
I just don't know what to think with a Zelda movie. We don't even have a good idea of what aspect of the series they'd want to adapt.
One camp says it's obviously going to be Breath of the Wild /Tears of the Kingdom - a retelling, or just that it's set in that iteration if the series with a new narrative. These are the games, realistically speaking, most active (as in people currently interacting with the series) fans are familiar with. They've sold far more than any prior Zeldas, and it appears to be the direction Nintendo wants to go in, in defining Zelda's identity.
The other main camp I see is Ocarina of Time as the basis for a Zelda movie. Prior to Breath of the Wild, it was the biggest Zelda. It has the most iconic depiction of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. If you want to grab older Zelda fans, evoke a more traditional medieval fantasy story, this is probably a good bet. However, it is pretty old. For this to work, they'd need a big new remake of Ocarina of Time to reestablish that version of the series in the public eye. I'll also include that Twilight Princess could probably form a lot of elements in this version of a Zelda film, even if it's not a more overt homage.
Sadly I don't think other options for Zelda movies have much realistic weight. Majora's Mask is just too weird for general audiences to not be a big risk - I'd only expect to see it if an Ocarina of Time esque movie does well. Wind Waker and other games in the series would almost certainly be animated if adapted, which would of course be too risky for boring executives and all that, sadly.
So yeah, either Calamity Era modern Zelda, or some toss up between Ocarina and Twilight Princess. The smart money is on the new games. Nintendo follows the money, and that's where they want to go. I don't expect us to see an adaptation of classic Zelda, with the green cap and a fairy anytime soon.
What I do expect, unfortunately, is endless references - oh wow look it's a mosaic on that wall that looks like Link to the Past Link pixel art 🤯
Then Link quips "huh, why was the ancient hero's hair pink??"
I'm not... exactly expecting great things from this movie tbh
.
The only way I could see a Majora’s mask movie doing well is if Tim Burton directed it (which we already know won’t be the case). Majora’s mask already seems like it was make by Tim Burton lol
I think a Bowser’s Inside Story movie could actually work for fans and general audiences. After a few Mario movies, having the hero and villain team up would be a great marketing gimmick. I guarantee you there are millions of kids who love Bowser that would beg their parents to take them to the movie where Bowser is a good guy.
It's VERY likely since movies tend to HATE bringing back the same villain,
If we’re talking Mario spin-offs, Peach doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Hades for her own movie. She’s too linked with Mario for that to work. I would actually say the same for Yoshi. Wario actually has a chance thanks to his multitude of games to pull from.
Also, Don’t count out series like F-Zero, Star Fox, or even Punch Out. They may not have the fans to back them up, but their general concepts would actually make for a compelling movie.
As to the Smash movie, it could work, and to those who think Mario shouldn’t be the main character, Mario is and always has been the main character of Smash. (Except for Kirby, but his face isn’t as recognizable.)
To those wanting shows, pick one. Any could work. My money’s on a new Mario show though.
I think the big thing that should be considered with making movies is the idea to expand the awareness of an IP. Metroid might not sell many games, but if Nintendo thinks that’s Metroid movie or show could grow the brand, that would be enough for them to want to make it, and studios would look at it as more IP they get to adapt which is all they’re thinking about right now. The video game movie boom seems to be either happening or on the horizon, so studios will be looking for things to adapt, even if they don’t have the biggest sales. At least, that’s the way I see it.
Yes, Arlo, please make a video on your pitches for Nintendo shows! It’s so fun to hear your ideas!
"Paper Mario: the Movie" and "Pikmin: the Movie" look real good, huh?
The thing that I don't see anyone talking about with regards to a Smash Brothers movie is that Sony is making the Zelda movie, while Illumination made the Mario movie. Like how the X-Men and Fantastic Four couldn't be in the MCU prior to the Disney/Fox merger, I don't see how they get the different studios to play nice.
Sony probably doesn't have the same deal with Nintendo that they got when they bought all movie rights to Spider-Man and the X-Men.
One thing you missed in your analysis - Hollywood used to make these smaller budget films that made (often with larger ROI because if you're only spending 10-20m, as horror often used to cost, plus another 10-20m marketting because you don't need to market lower budget films as much, you don't need nearly as many bums in seats to make 5x profit). At some point the major studios decided they wanted to focus exclusively on the high budget films that either or were huge hits or major flops for the studio. Doesn't change the conclusion ('big IP only rather than just things that could be profitable if the budget was kept under control') but the way it gets to the conclusion differs somewhat.
i would kill for a xenoblade 1 anime
a kirby movie could definitely work, kirby as an ip is pretty big tbh. Obviously kirby wouldn't talk but you can have many other characters talk like king ddd and meta knight. Wall-e also didn't have the main characters speaking at all and it was a big success and is a great movie.
The quality is going to need to double if they want to keep these going. Serviceable is ok for the first one but the future movies need to be more than just "not shit"
I just hope the Mario sequel slows it down a little and allows for some more characterization. That movie just felt like a 90 minute theme park ride.
i agree with your opinion but also a 90 minute theme park ride fits for the tone of the mario games
I hope they expand to tv shows, shorts, and comics. Fire Emblem and Xenoblade Chronicles would work great as tv shows.
More Pikmin shorts would be great. They could easily have them play before Nintendo movies, the same way Disney and Illumination does.
Comics are less expensive to make and i think they are the best format for adaptions. Zelda already has a great manga. Kirby and Splatoon already have manga, but those are geared more towards younger kids.
Finally! Someone mentions Fire Emblem!
There was an anime with only two episodes back in the 90s. With its rising popularity, especially in Japan, they really need to give the series a second go for an anime
@fe_fanby2278 It's surprising they only tried to make an anime once.
I see Luigi’s Mansion working much better as a 45-minute Halloween special than as a 90-minute film. I can also see Pikmin, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon as theatrical shorts that get put before Nintendo’s movies.
I still think they might make it half of the next Mario movie mixing that whole plot line with something else
Speaking of Luigi's Mansions mainstream appeal, there are strong rumors that a mini-land and ride based on it could be coming to Epic Universe as part of a future expansion, so if thays true it would very much speak to how valuable people outside of Nintendo see the IP.
That ending was the most plausible scenario I've ever heard.
There was a Captain N episode where they went to where all the warp pipes from every game universe intersect, and they traveled to a handful of places trying to find something in the correct game world. It would be funny to see a Nintendo movie with the exact same idea a few decades later.
On one end: Considering how different all Nintendo franchise are, it would make WAY more sense for them to be self contained than linked in a Cinematic Universe
On the other end: Making a cinematic universe of Nintendo movies will incentivize Nintendo to make movies out of more obscure franchises in order to fill up their NCU roster a bit more. Also, Smash Bros movie would be so fucking cool.
But we can also get the issue of the movies slowly being the same thing over and over which is the biggest critcism of the more recent marvel movies. If we get a Cinematic universe from Nintendo I would hope they could make each movie or show unique and interesting without each one feeling the same.
I don’t like the idea of a Smash movie, but I am in favor of Nintendo’s less ubiquitous series getting some spotlight. I think one of the fundamental issues plaguing cinematic universes is that every film has to conform to an overarching genre, for Marvel this has been action/comedy and for DC this has been action/drama.
If things were to build towards a Smash Bros movie, then Animal Crossing wouldn’t be able to have a nice slice of life movie because then they would be trampled over/flipped upside down for an epic Smash movie.
Nintendo’s strength is their breadth of genres and characters, I’m not saying there shouldn’t be any crossover (for example, I’m fine with the kitsch “Punch-Out Pizza” reference because Mario was already a referee in Punch-Out, it’s not too much of a stretch that their connected together), but I think they have too much to lose pursuing a Smash movie compared to if each film was a self-contained story.
@@raistlinmajere7149 Yeah, they'd need to avoid that. The problem that a lot of both Marvel and Nintendo stuff have in common here is that most of their initial stories revolve around the same premise: An unlikely hero (or small group of heroes) does a bunch of cool action stuff to beat a bad guys who are causing problems everywhere, eventually preventing their endgame and killing the bid bad.
@@johnclark926 IMO, the best way for them to handle a Smash movie would be for them to only make ONE, and have everyone's minds get wiped at the end, that way it's a crossover that doesn't affect each individual world as a whole and people wouldn't have to watch the whole cinematic universe to know what's happening.
It really wouldn't be. It would be a jarbled mess, coming up with convoluted ways to get everyone there, the plot wouldn't be any good because smash bros has never been about the plot nor has it ever had a cohesive one. "Oh but brawl did it" no it didn't. It was fun, and the cutscenes looked cool, but as a story it was a complete mess, made to justify the levels. Subspace emissary is my favorite thing in smash bros, but if it proves anything it's that a smash movie WOULDN'T work, because it only works as a playable party/competitive game
You are on a roll Arlo, love the uploads and strategy. ACU next?
Ganon’s Tower!!! Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a very long time
A couple things to consider:
Even though many Nintendo franchises maybe don't have the pull to bring in huge audiences, a cinematic universe where they get their own movies could actually MAKE them household names. Marvel's own cinematic universe was populated with characters that next to no one other than hardcore comic book fans knew before their movies came out (Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, etc.) but the fact that they existed in a shared universe with other good movies allowed them to lift each other up and create shared success. People went to see them not only because they looked like good movies on their own, but ALSO because they knew they'd eventually crossover with characters they already knew and loved, so I could definitely see something similar happening with Nintendo's IPs!
However, especially because Nintendo is taking their time and going to multiple different studios to make adaptations, I think something like your pitch for a Smash movie would be far more plausible. I'm thinking something like Across the Spider-Verse: have Mario be the main character and our primary focus, but have him hop through pipes to different universes where he meets a bunch of other characters, and have TONS of little cameos and easter eggs to appeal to hardcore fans without alienating general audiences.
A very exciting idea that I hope comes to fruition one day!
People who wished for adaptations, especially live-action ones, of their favorite IPs as children really curled the fingers of the monkey's paw. Then got socked in the face by the fist it made.
I'm not placing a lot of faith in Nintendo movies, at least not now, but I am very intrigued to see what Nintendo does from here. The Mario movie opened up so many possibilities and I think Nintendo should grab them by the horns now. I'm staying cautiously optimistic for the live-action Zelda movie, and would love a DK movie too. In terms of Fire Emblem, from the perspective of a brand new fan of the series, I think the franchise is best suited for anime adaptations. Each season/series can be based on one game, or two games for Blazing Blade/Binding Blade and Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn. This is all wishful thinking, btw
Before even watching the video, I gotta say... LUIGI'S MANSION. Out of everything Nintendo could do, that by far has the best potential for a good movie
Arlo, your timeline segment at the end had me rolling. That needs to be a short/reel.
Even if we don’t get full movies of some niche franchises, we might get little shorts before the main movies in theathers! Like imagine the TH-cam pikmin shorts but for something like chibi-robo or f-zero. Could be a decent workaround!
I want a Punch Out movie inspired by the Rocky series, and a StarFox CGI action movie like the Mario movie
Yeah just watch the Punch-Out Wii commercials. That's a movie right there!
I look forward to rewatching this video in 1,3,5 years time and more.
I think Arlo is pretty spot on in a lot of ways and imma bet this video will age well.
In the hospital rn then saw this in my recommended. Love you Arlo ❤
I wanna see Mario and Wario fight over the admiration of the toads.
I will watch all Nintendo movies. Each hit gets us one step closer to Xenoblade and Fire Emblem
Those could just be an anime.
I definitely feel like those would work better as anime as well yeah. Too long to fit into movie form properly
Xenoblade is already a movie basically 😭🙏 not saying I wouldn't watch it though
But it could be fully animated. Sounds pretty good if you ask me.
I once had a dream where I watched an early few minutes of a Star Fox movie. It showed Star Fox as a wise-cracking young pilot who, after a chase scene, crashed on an asteroid but managed to escape his pursuers, proceeded by him humorously talking through possible ways to escape his situation, before realizing he had none of the tools to do it, potentially setting up some kind of rescuer, if I know my opening scene tropes. Art direction was similar to Zootopia and I remember his design being way more expressive than in his games. It was fairly quippy and campy but I would be intrigued by a proper origin story, which the games have never really done. What was he like before he was a star pilot? Before losing his father to Andross? Before meeting his team and conquering his first few missions? I think it has way more potential than you'd think at first glance.
Great Stuff, as always!
I hope Nintendo and Illumination don’t try the cinematic universe. The movies would work better if they were self contained.
I doubt they wouldn't be self contained. They could just do a bunch of movies in their own universe and then a "non canon" smash bros crossover type movie. Kind of like how smash bros' lore doesn't affect any of the games it's associated with
Also if they were in a cinematic universe that would mean they would have to work out live action Zelda characters alongside animated Mario characters
Mario has enough for a universe all his own
I’m so down for a Mario universe, but recent Marvel has made me very wary of massive franchises
Yeah I’m pretty confident they’ll keep Mario/Donkey Kong to its own universe. A live action Sony pictures Zelda movie pretty much confirms that. Zelda would be the next one to crossover if they were gonna combine universes
It might be a pipe dream, but I would really like to see a sort of Guardians of the Galaxy type Star Fox movie, more kid friendly of course but I just feel like that type of movie would work for SF, plus it can give the SF universe some actual worldbuilding for a change
World building...
Assault and Adventures would like to say hello
Dude, I hadn’t even thought of a Luigi’s Mansion movie! You are right! That would be an absolutely brilliant Halloween move, and really does feel plausible!
Make it happen Nintendo!
I’m continually impressed by Arlo’s immense creativity. Love it!
Maybe the reason why Nintendo didn't knew Samus' character, is because how little personality she showed through the games. This was in early 2000's, so maybe this was before Fusion and Prime. I may be wrong.
It's worth noting the only person who knew Samus's character fully at that point in time was Yoshio Sakamoto, and he only started getting to know her character with Super Metroid in 1994, as it was his first project as a director for Metroid. He wasn't in the talks with those movie directors, and he was still likely fleshing out Samus's character since Fusion was the first game to really do that, and the Metroid Manga that tied in to Zero Mission as a prequel story to it. Those didn't come around until 2002 and 2003 respectively, so no one really knew Samus's character in more depth until then, so the John Woo Metroid trilogy must've been in the talks pre-2002.
let's... *not* make it a "Universe" the MARIO UNIVERSE has enough story potential
How many movies/shows are possible with Mario alone?
@@ashodmiah7924 Luigi, Peach, Bowser, & Donkey Kong are 4 major characters right there. You can make a decent amount of movies and sequels off those alone.
I agree with this. So much. Trying to combine them into one universe would not only create so many issues for how to make movies but it would also limit literally every single franchise involved
@@ashodmiah7924Luigi Mansion Movie
Donkey Kong Country Movie
Yoshi Island Movie
Captain Toad Movie
Wario Land Movie
You can even do a movie based on Sunshine or Galaxy
@@platinum3690 Galaxy's definitely more likely since that would introduce Rosalina plus it would be on a much larger scale than any other movie they could do.
My thoughts on Xenoblade directly mirror Arlos. I’ve been replaying 3 and have been trying to imagine what a series would even look like. Each of the games are just so big, and so much of their best moments are told nonlinearly through side quests, that I just can’t imagine how a narrative that forces a linear telling could fully work.
21:16 *peak comedy*
“Tortimer is walking slowly! and everyone’s like, aw, hurry up, and that’s the joke”
Considering how much Alien inspired Metroid, its absolutely perfect for a movie.
Please, Nintendo, I want an ANIMATED Metroid movie, no live action
Give me both.
If they do live action, it's just gonna be other M on film guaranteed.
@@aaronc9294 which is why I PRAY for animation 💀
Honestly if any Nintendo franchise would be live action, it would be Metroid. It would fit the sci-fi action horror vibe so much better, especially if the company making an animated version would be illumination. They could do some amazing CGI and practical effects, they could make Samus's suit look so much more real than an animated metal would, and it would draw in more adult audience like the actual Metroid franchise does. Animation works for Metroid in the games because they're games, but if they were to make a movie live action would do it so much better
@@henryhere This is true! But as a diehard metroid fan, animation would probably work better. They should just market it like Invincible. And this is a franchise that would require DUBIOUS amounts of CGI. There’s basically no humans besides Samus, and even then, a lot of what she does probably wouldn’t translate very well to live action. A realistic art style would probably be best, just like Invincible, though. I don’t think Nintendo would want Metroid to go to a studio like Illumination if they would rather Zelda be Sony’s.
Didnt know TopicArlo had a second channel, these videos are great!
8:07 Though they could make allusions to it. Like having one of Bowser's troops refer to Luigi as "Green 'Stache" due to not remembering his name (because Bowser is already established to remembering it in the movie continuity).
After Zelda and Mario, I would honestly feel like Kirby would be next to hit the big screen or a service, Metroid isn’t big enough
Always entertained by your content, it's awesome!

I feel like the best method is to use a “Prometheus” approach. Make a movie that could appeal to a large audience, but only subtlety connect it to a franchise in the trailers. Kind of a “if you know, you know” deal. The fans will recognize it and want to see it, the general public can get interested because it’s an interesting movie. Then when the movie comes out and the reveal at the end more firmly connects it, the fans will still be happy and the general audience can look further into the series if they want. Metroid could absolutely benefit in this way.
All I want for a Kirby anything is them keeping the same type of voice they had for Dedede in the Back Atcha show thats all I want
Haven’t watched the vid yet but I wonder whether a live action Metroid or animated Metroid would work the best, I could see both working well (animation WOULD be easier to transfer different designs onto the big screen compared to live action, but live action I do think could still work)
Honestly Metroid is probably the franchise that most fits live action, given that the artstyle has a more “realistic” look to it compared to other series
If Nintendo gave me a check and told me to write a script based on any of their IPs, I would easily choose Metroid and try to make it as close to an R as possible.
Dude… 22 years for a peach movie is crushing but also perhaps realistic
I would like to see short films from the Mario movie. Like Toad , Bowser’s minions, Luigi, or the Koopalings. I think it could be fun and interesting to explore more of the world with these characters.
Kirby is definitely the next movie they should work on. He's recognizable. Friendly and we can have colorful settings with dark undertones and show off his world.
Arlo, here is your proof that a metroid movie is VERY LIKELY:
1. The rumors say that a metroid movie is very likely.
2. If Nintendo makes more movies they might be like 'aw, heck, why not?' And try it.
3. Audiences love large sci fi blockbusters. If they play their cards right, they'll make a fantastic pg-13 rated live action science fiction action masterpiece with Samus working with federation marines sorta like Aliens, with large parts of the metroid lore portrayed masterfully. Huge action setpieces, snappy dialog, and an overarching story involving phason that wraps up nicely enough at the end is the PERFECT sequel bait that SHALL spawn into an entire metroid Prime trilogy of movies! If they put enough big actors, action scenes, and just make a GREAT movie, audiences will love it, and the series will be a pretty large success. Obviously not mario numbers, but pretty great.
I AM COMPLETELY CONFIDENT THAT A METROID MOVIE COULD ABSOLUTELY WORK. You should listen to your editors more. By the way, while I have you here, I love your content.
Unless they give it to Illumination.
@@ashodmiah7924oh heavens above please don't let them give it to illumination
For it to work, it totally needs to lean heavily on its Alien basis. It wouldn't really be a 'kids movie', but it would be so amazing.
I haven't thought about Ganon's Tower in decades. Thanks for that callback!
"METROID SERIES GET BEHIND ME" - Castlevania Series
The minute a Kirby movie (hopefully) gets announced, I’m literally going to scream like a banshee and faint wherever I am
(I already loved the anime so much, a movie could work so well)🤞🏻
GIVE ME A SPLATOON MOVIE NOW!!!
YEEEEAAAAAAHHH
I would love to see them try a Kirby movie or a Mario spin off movie, like with Wario and Waluigi or the princesses or even Luigi’s Mansion.
I so want the ending you have regarding aliens implanting our heads with nanotech with burritos.
