I honestly they are in a intriguing spot where yes they very well could
Sure the ps5 or series X may have it's fans but if Nintendo carries over majority of what switch had to offer though backwards compatibility and services they already have a leg up
Plus unlike other studios even cross gen releases in 2025 won't feel like they are limiting hardware success like ps4 does with ps5
More a novelty thing left over from development as a one last thank you moment for lo g lasting players

Literally all they have to do is follow the PS1 -> PS2 model:
    - Full backwards compatibility with Switch 1 (digital/physical games + Switch Online).
    - Make it noticeably more powerful (a given)
    - Improve multiplayer experience (like, come on Nintendo, this is a pretty low bar)
    - Add non-gaming functionality that dramatically increases its value (i.e., add all the popular streaming services to the Nintendo store).
That's it. I'm sure it'll be improved in other ways as well, but if these four items are addressed, Nintendo will have an easy slam dunk.
That being said, this *IS* Nintendo we're talking about here, and sometimes things go a tad... sideways.
Anyway, thanks Arlo, hope you're doing well!

@@ryan20028 Exactly. Xbox and Playstation can get away with it because they've set that precedent with all their consoles so fans understand what they're getting. The vast majority of Nintendo fans do not have the same mindset as other "gamers" and thus don't really see a performance update as an actual new console. It also doesn't help that Nintendo kinda shot themselves in the foot with things like the Wii Mini and New 3DS which were variants of already existing consoles that conditioned casual fans to think if a new console isn't completely different, then it is just an unnecessary variant.

Also, when PS2 launched DVDs were massive, abandoning VHS, and DVD players were expensive. Having a console that also played DVDs was a big thing back then, you could have both for almost the same price. Also PS1 was a big success and this helped. Nowadays many gamers play on PC and almost no one watches DVD, that's one of the reasons why people thought no one could beat PS2 and one of the reasons consoles sell less and less, it was the perfect timing for PS2. So switch's success is very impressive.

    1. Full switch backwards compatibility
    2. Powerful enough for 3rd parties to work with for modern games
    3. Continue to release great games at a steady pace
They have all the momentum in the world going for them, so if they fail they only have their own incompetence to blame

I hope I one day see the same eshop having a clear and easy indicator of if games are Switch 2-only, or available for both (perhaps a different icon to go with the tabletop/handheld/docked compatibility indicators, or a different section more prominently visible altogether), and it would be cool to see some games get updated to look and/or perform better on Switch 2. Regardless, currently released games running more smoothly would be enough for me. Perhaps DLSS for 4k upscaling will be possible?

    • @imatiu
      @imatiu 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

Point 2 is probaly not as important as you think, if they were to have that much power for a portable then the battery life and portability would suffer due to the limitations of technology, the Steam Deck for example is heavier than the Switch and has a fairly short battery life, not to mention it is less resistant to drops and impacts. These things may not seem that important, but believe me since Nintendo has such a huge younger/parents fanbase those elements are important.
Plus while there are certainly some great third party games with heavy specs requirements, the Switch isn't the best platform for those and Nintendo should know this, also having strong hardware also becomes an obstacle for point 3, so Nintendo will probably not do a huge leap in the specs department, since it brings more issues than benefits on the long run.

They need to do exactly five things.
    1. Make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR, FROM THE GET-GO that it’s a new system. We all remember the confusion surrounding the Wii-U, especially among parents and casuals. I don’t know if slapping “Switch 2” on it is necessary, but they can’t leave it vague.
    2. Backwards compatibility, and no nickel and diming people on the transfer of digital copies. If they want to charge a buck or two for each one, fine, but keep the price low and don’t lock any features behind paywalls. This transition needs to be as smooth as possible.
    3. Don’t do anything heroically stupid. Keep it a handheld/console hybrid, and if they must add any goofy shit to it like experimental control schemes, make it optional.
    4. Quality control! Keep the studios they own in check so that we don’t see as many bugs and slowdown issues, iron out any known hardware problems and do as much shakedown testing as possible BEFORE the drop, and don’t gaslight people when they inevitably find problems with the hardware or software. Own up to them, and fix them.
    5. Keep software development sustainable. Remember how ACNL got delayed for a few months to give the people working on it time to live their lives and not cut corners trying to meet the old deadline? Remember how it resulted in a great game that didn’t have a shitload of bugs? Do that, Nintendo. Do that any time it seems like it might be necessary, because it probably will be. It may not always pay off in the short term, but it absolutely will in the long term.

Also, casual gamers weren't even buying consoles anymore because they all had tablets and smartphones to play casual games. Haven't watched the video yet (I'll watch it after work!), but coming from a die-hard Nintendo fan, I think that the Switch's success was lighting in a bottle. The combination of its quirks, being the first of its kind, the 2020 pandemic and the release of Animal Crossing at a time where millions of people were stuck at home with nothing to do, I think that the Switch was absolutely perfect for its time and place. Do I think it's *impossible* for Nintendo to achieve greater success with a future console than their success with the Switch? No - but I don't think the immediate successor will have the same level of success.
I think Nintendo is in a weirdly familiar bind - when I was a kid, seemingly *everybody* had a Wii - and if they didn't, they had someone in their family or friend circle that did - or they at least played one at some point. I think this was crazy at the time, because being a "gamer" or playing videogames in general still sort of had a stigma, or was not as mainstream as it is now. Looking back on it, it was really special that it had such an intense cultural impact - it's like this unifying experience so many people have had that they can share together, regardless if a person "identifies" as a gamer or not. It was something we all experienced at some point. And now, looking at the Switch, I have met so many people who have a Switch or who have played one, even though they themselves "don't play videogames". Many of my friends who aren't really "gamers" in a sense, have a Switch and I've gotten to experience really special moments with them playing games together, or even just striking up conversations about which game they're currently playing or which ones they've tried. It might be a while before we have this unifying, cultural experience again that reaches beyond the realm of self-identified "gamers".
With all that being said, all the "non-gamers" that played the Wii didn't move onto the WiiU, they moved onto whatever the next cool thing was (phone games) or they just stopped playing games in general. I think Nintendo is in a tricky spot again, because I sincerely have a hard time believing the near 140 million people that all bought a Switch are ready to hop into the Switch 2. I myself am ready and excited, but I'm always keeping up with what's happening in the gaming world. Your average person who bought a Switch during the pandemic for something to do? I don't think they're going to be paying attention, but I could be wrong.

Not to mention, there have been lackluster first-party games like Mario Party 10, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, Star Fox Zero, and many more.
And the BIGGEST one that costed the Wii U: Game drought. For every Super Mario or Zelda being released today, you won't get another hit Wii U game until many MONTHS later without barely anything to keep gamers busy. It was bad.

The most likely outcome I think will happen is that they will have a *moderately* successful console that isn't Switch levels of hype but will still be enough to keep Nintendo and the fanbase satiated. The launch titles will be something to keep an eye on as they will show if the console is "worth it" to the average consumer. Breath of the Wild was that title for millions of people, let's hope they can have something similar for their next system.

I honestly think there's nothing wrong with the Switch's current business model. Being able to play console games on the go without needing to stream them from the cloud is a genuine selling point, _not_ a gimmick. Why fix what isn't broken?
All they need to do is make the Switch 2 (or Super Switch) have specs that are at the very least comparable to the PS4/Xbox One, have backwards compatibility with current Switch games, and to fill the "new gimmick" quota maybe also have proper VR support using the Joy Cons and goggles you can put the device inside.

That's why I think exploring VR would be a good next step. Most VR tech is prohibitively expensive, but it doesn't have to be with Nintendo because they already have mostly everything you'd need for it. Every system Nintendo has abandoned the last one but kept backwards compatibility for the last few systems to some degree. Reality moves forward, can't be stuck on trying to drag the past along with you. Life itself is nothing but risk after risk. Some pay off, some don't. Nintendo could have another massive failure, wont hurt them, they got 50 years worth of money in the back to try again and again. They have all the money they need, this is EXACTLY the time to be creative and try new things.
VR is trash, it's not the way. AR would be a better path to take. Labo was just an idea, no real thought was put into it. It was never planned to be a long lasting thing, just a small little thing to get a few more dollars from kids.

11:33 I have to disagree on that. The Nintendo right now is not the one from 2012. Since then Iwata died, Reggie left, and corporate suits took over the lead. I'm not saying Nintendo hasn't done scetchy business moves before, but the leadership and it's philosophy has changed dramatically. The switch is a great demonstration of that. The awful paid online service was established, overpriced ports have been thrown at the switch one after another, and Nintendo's online presence has basically boiled down to a guy from offscreen announcing the next game during a direct.
Nintendo has lost that playfulness that Iwata brought to the company and I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo's next console was just a more powerful switch with the incredibly creative name "Switch 2".

For me I have issues with the Switch and Nintendo:
    1. The transition between generations was terrible. Going from Wii U to Switch was atrocious, I spent $700 on a Wii U setup in 2015 just for them to announce the Switch a few months later. I did not want to re-buy games I just bought like Super Mario World, Mario Kart 8, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, and Hyrule Warriors. Even worse, the game that was supposed to be a Wii U exclusive, Breath of the Wild, was now cross-generation. My investment was almost a total waste, what a facepalm. Nintendo offered no help or recompense for fans who actually bought the Wii U. Meanwhile the 3DS had an ambassador program to reimburse fans who bought the 3DS at increased price in it's first year. Maybe Nintendo just changed for the worse after the passing of Iwata in 2015. Nintendo needs to understand it's ridiculous to expect former Wii U owners to spend (cumulatively) about $200 on an individual game + DLC for both Wii U and Switch and with no save transfers. The Switch needs to have very good support and transition between generations.
The only saving grace is that Wii U is pretty great as a modded console with hundreds of games and Wii U, DS, and GameCube compatibility
    2. Third party games are both more expensive and worse on Switch. For anything besides first party titles, you get a worse experience and pay just as much money for Switch versions. For people arguing portability in 2017, you could always have gotten a laptop or something and used Steam. Since people already don't care and will buy terrible Switch ports anyways, I don't think third party needs to be a concern for Nintendo, fans don't care about things like price or performance
It took me years (and Smash Ultimate) to finally get a Switch and I only play Smash, Fire Emblem, and Pokemon. For me, the Switch is only worth it for services like Pokemon Home and games that have Switch Online features. Emulation is my preferred way to play Smash and Mario Kart and enables much better multiplayer through PC apps like Parsec

It’s also more difficult to use for, say, a family with a kid that wants something for the car, especially when you consider parental controls. Everything else in your argument is subjective and your opinion, but a high-end laptop with steam instead of a switch is a horrible solution for portability

Nintendo is the only one of the big 3 capable of repeating their success again. Mostly because they have first party titles that are only playable on Nintendo consoles and capture a big chunk of the audience. XBOX and PS first party titles are mostly just games for older players and it doesn’t help Sony that they killed most of their fun IPs to only release games like SpiderMan and live service crap.

The Steam Deck is a luxury device aimed at existing steam users. Its not a rival to mainline consoles and the sales numbers of Switch and Steam Deck reflect this.

One thing not mentioned but that will complicate the "just build a higher-specs Switch" approach is that now there is a competition, and as those are basically handheld PCs with a fancy controller, they have potential to run everything that's not Nintendo, even Sony exclusives, if you're OK with waiting. And it's a much lower barrier to entry than traditional consoles, any company that produces laptops can try to make a gaming handheld now, and several did already.

Arlo I don't know how you wrote this whole video and neglected to even mention the Steam Deck.

You forgot to mention one important aspect: The Steam Deck. When the Switch launched it didn't have any competition as a hyrid console. Hardcore gamers that don't care about Nintendo games will have switched (pun not intended) in droves by now and won't be coming back.

I don't think they're direct competitors. The only consumers Valve is stealing from Nintendo are the handful of PC gamers knowledgeable enough to bother setting up Switch emulators on the Deck. If you want to play Nintendo games you're far more likely to simply buy a Switch.

One thing to remember when it comes to the resurgence of Nintendo is us 30 somethings all grew up with nes and snes and we now have money. So even people that like games but more casually now, statistically speaking, have the disposable income to buy one and in some cases let it sit on the shelf.

I really hope there is back compatibility for the next Switch! Just seeing Xenoblade Chronicles 3 gameplay footage makes me want to replay the whole trilogy. Ugh so freaking good.
