@@derekw8039 It was that generation of gaming that made it clear that just saying, "This console lets you play these fun games" wasn't going to work anymore.
The GameCube was competing against the PS2, which many people bought purely as a DVD player because it was cheaper than actual DVD players, and partly because of the PS2's huge sales numbers, all the third-party devs flocked to the PS2, giving people even more reason to pick the PS2 over the GameCube. The most notable example of that was the Capcom 5: five Capcom games were promised to be GameCube exclusives, and only the bad ones and the cult classics ended up remaining GameCube exclusives; the rest, including Resident Evil 4, got PS2 ports that greatly outsold their GameCube versions.
Nintendo learned that they couldn't maintain console sales purely through first-party titles anymore, while PlayStation and Xbox learned absolutely nothing. So, today, Nintendo relies on creative hardware features to stay relevant while PlayStation and Xbox rely on hoarding exclusive titles to stay relevant.

The Switch may not have all the big new AAAs, but other than that it has basically most major franchises of all gaming history.

The pokemon games on the GC are better then the pokemon games released so far on the Switch, athough arceus is absolutely a step in the right direction. GC has Star wars rogue leader2, metroid prime 1+2, pikmon 1+2, Zelda windwaker, twilight princess and Collection + master quest, melee is considered by most to be the best smash game, eternal darkness, soul calibur 2, resident evil 4, RE: remake, MGS, best paper mario game, killer7, F-zero GZ viewtful joe, tales of symphonia, PSO 1+2 and the list goes on.
You can make a case that you personally dont think GC has more good games, but I think most people would disagree with you on that. GC had an absolutely insane number of good games. Also when it comes to exclusive 3rd party the GC was way superior, the switch barely has any of those it mostly have ported 3rd party games from the last generation.
The switch is a great console for sure and it still has milage left which is why I say that it will probably be on par or better when its all said and done, but imo its not there yet.

However, compared to the PS2, the Gamecube had poor 3rd Party Support and the hype of the PS2 having the ability to play DVDs is what hurt it.

Metroid Prime is, to this day, my favourite game of all time. For a first-timer jumping into the world of Metroid, and still relatively young to gaming, it really opened my eyes to what games could truly be. The environmental story-telling, the massive amounts of lore that you have to find and piece together, the feeling of getting stronger the farther you push into the game, the beautiful world, the excellent music, the fantastic gameplay... nothing else really comes close for me. Every other game I play, I can point out flaws, I can point out problems, and I can even have my opinion completely flip over time. But if Metroid Prime isn't perfect, then it's as close as it gets.

Same here - I was fortunate to be raised in a family that thoroughly enjoyed playing videogames, so I had the privilege of my family having a GameCube, N64, Wii, PS1, PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, etc - but the GameCube is the ONLY console I still find myself routinely going back to.
      Luigi's Mansion
      Paper Mario
      Mario Sunshine
      Battalion Wars
      Mario Kart Double Dash
      Zelda Wind Waker
      Zelda Twilight Princess
      Smash Bros Melee
      Mario Party 4, 5, 6, and 7
      Mario Strikers
Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2
Metal Arms - A Glitch in the System
      Harvest Moon
      Mario Golf
      Mario Baseball
These are games that still hold up today, that I frequently wip out at parties and everyone's down to play. And when you look at the processing and graphical leap the GameCube had from the N64, it's absolutely NUTS in retrospect. Plus, my console never failed, my controllers always worked, it was easy to bring to friend's houses, the system is a total 10/10.
I was actually just having a chat with my girlfriend the other day about how it's a shame Nintendo seems to never acknowledge GameCube nostalgia the way it does with the NES, SNES, and N64. Stop at any store that sells graphic tees and you'll find a shirt with these consoles referenced - and yet, I've never seen a GameCube shirt in the wild before. I've met many people with mixed opinions on the NES and N64 but I've *never* met more devoted and nostalgic fans than GameCube fans.

It literally felt like the amount of random encounters and interactions was endless depending on what time you were playing. I love Pokemon Colosseum and XD a lot, the former in particular. They're fascinating experiments for the Pokemon series. They have a darker tone with grittier locals, a fantastic soundtrack, and making a game entirely out of Double Battles was a great idea to freshen things up. I just wish we'd get another game in that series one of these days.
TTYD is one of my all time favorites. I can't say anything that hasn't already been said about it. It's fantastic, and sadly it seems like Nintendo never plans to return to that style ever again.
Chibi Robo is a blast and a very unique experience.
Soul Calibur II is probably my all time favorite fighting game.
Rebel Strike and Rogue Leader are incredibly fun and have great multiplayer modes.
Monkey Ball is of course excellent and always will be.
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance is one of my all time favorite co-op games.
Not all of these are exclusives, but they're some of the games I played the most on the console. And I just have a ton of fond memories of the console... even if I didn't own one as a kid.

I, too, have come to want to see Pokemon games employ more double battles, primarily so that the more defensive and supportive mons (ex. the Happiny line) could hold more viability in story playthroughs. That and the other different battle formats can, in fact, probably help each mainline game feel more diverse as well (though not necessarily as a full substitute for shake-ups in the formula as a whole) and make players figure out different strategies for each one.

I didn't think I would see anyone else mention Four Swords Adventures. I bought the game hoping to play it with my siblings, as I thought a multiplayer Zelda would be cool. I was immediately disappointed when it turned out that the multiplayer required those GBA cables, which we did not have. Eventually, I figured I may as well play it single-player. So I did, and it was a lot of fun. Even when playing alone, controlling four Links at once was a lot of fun thanks to clever stuff like formations and having one Link be able to grab and throw another. I honestly would've loved to see a proper single-player Zelda game that used Four Swords Adventures' method of controlling four Links at once; that could've been really good.

I'm going to assume you've never played the Gamecube Pokemon games and recommend Pokemon Colosseum to you. When modern Pokemon isn't quite doing it for you, it's not a bad idea to go back and try a game in the series you haven't played before. It's a really interesting take on the world of Pokemon that keeps the gameplay from the main series while offering a completely unique journey through a new region. And though its sequel was technically a lot better, that first game to me feels way more special.
If you have played them and just didn't like them then I apologize.

The story was boring, the characters were underdeveloped, the mechanics were clunky. I got way more use out of the bonus disc. That Jirachi spent a lot of time in my party in Pokemon Ruby.

Metroid Prime is the most important game I have ever played, and probably ever will play.
The original Metroid was difficult and obtuse, and I quickly resorted to online maps and tips, but Super Metroid drew me in. I wanted to explore, find things for myself, and conquer its challenges myself. It and Symphony of the Night defined my favorite genre. So when I saw Metroid Prime moving into 3D (a year after Halo, when FPS seemed to be taking over) I lamented. I was worried Metroid had become another game series trying to chase the success of Halo.
But I picked up the game anyway, and not only did I get a masterpiece of a game, I learned that a genre of game isn’t as locked to gameplay or graphics as i thought. It completely changed my attitude toward the soon to be released wind waker, and has shaped how I judge games ever since.
On an unrelated note, the GameCube has a solid Mario, two excellent Zeldas, two Pikmin, a solid Mario kart, one of the best Smash brothers, and (before dread) my two favorite Metroid games. As far as games released first party, it’s Nintendo’s best console. The Switch is capable of beating that, but its not there yet.

Eh... My personal favorite game on the GameCube feels like a bit of a hidden/underrated gem: Chibi-Robo! It's just kinda weird, lovable, and quirky game that really caught my attention at the time. Still does even though there hasn't been a real mainline title for the series on a console since. Just 3 hand held titles in total, (and one of those was a Japanese exclusive). The park Management one was fun, and stuck to the series formula with a nice twist. But I totally hate the Zip-Lash game it took everything that I personally found fun (from the other 2 games, besides Chibi-Robo!, in the series that I've actually been able to play) out of the game formula but kept the character and asthetics for seemingly no other reason than to get the fans of the series' hopes up. Plus I think buying that game is still the only way to get a Chibi-Robo amiibo. Which feels a lot like Nintendo 'nostalgia pandering' to help inflate poor sales figures looking back on it. Which feels a kinda scummy. Definitely loved Pikmin 2 also. And loved Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion.

I'll regulate my list to 1 per series. (Sorry Resident Evil.) In no particular order:
Resident Evil 4. I consider this to be my favorite game of all time.
F-Zero GX. I was OBSESSED reading the character profiles in the manual. The blistering fast races, wanting to complete the story mode (I never did), and the so bad that they're good cutscenes kept me coming back for more.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Though I never completed it, the sanity meter and story hooked me until I couldn't get past the next to last level. (I knew it was the next to last level because of a strategy guide.)
Mario Power Tennis. I had many fun matches playing this with family. It's also the game that made me fall for Daisy. Lastly, I'd rewatch that opening cinematic A LOT. It just looked amazing.
Metroid Prime. This...is just...a masterpiece. Need I say more?
Super Mario Strikers. Another one where I had a ton of fun playing with family.
007: Everything or Nothing. I only ever played the coop mode with my little sister if you can believe that. We enjoyed it a lot. I may have done the first level in the campaign.
Time Splitters: Future Perfect by a hair over 2. The controls were just better in FP vs 2. My little sister and I had a blast with campaign coop, vs mode multiplayer, arcade challenges, map maker, etc. It's the type of game where if it released for the first time within the past 10 years, a 3rd of the content would probably be paid dlc. Just so much fun content.
Super Smash Bros Melee. I wasn't a pro player or anything, but the trophies and adventure mode made me a Nintendo fan. That's another where I watched the opening cinematic multiple times and REALLY wanted Nintendo to just make an Nintendo All Star crossover animated movie.
Beyond Good and Evil. I bought this on sale for $15 or $20 a few months after its release and was pleasantly surprised. Such a solidly good action adventure game for the time.
Honorable mention to Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Chaos Bleeds. I liked the show back in the day and this was one of the few licensed games done well at the time. It kept true to the source material without feeling gimmicky or forced game mechanics other than the multiplayer. Not perfect (I spent more time fighting the camera than Anya in her boss fight), but if you like the show, definitely worth a playthrough.
Final note: The 1st Spider-Man movie tie-in game was the first GameCube game that I bought and that was mainly because the Toys R Us I was in didn't have Resident Evil, there were no other stores close by that sold games, and I REALLY wanted to go home with a game that afternoon after buying my GCN. It wasn't a bad game. It was short. Bruce Campbell narrating tutorials/tips was a good listen. It was serviceable until I bought RE.

It's kinda amazing how much Gamecube games revolutionized so many franchises into what they are now. Games like Melee, Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Pikmin, and so many others experimented with so much, and so much of it worked. Even the experiments that unfortunately never left the Gamecube generation are still monumental and mark several of my franchise favorites, and really deserve a 2nd chance in the modern generation, particularly MarioKart DoubleDash and especially TTYD. While I don't think the Gamecube was quite as revolutionary as the N64 it was a worthy successor to it, and while the Wii and Switch are their own legendary hardwares the Gamecube is a severely underrated gem that definetely deserves more recognition. (Sadly, the Wii U is the runt of the litter that is hard to praise outside of Splatoon.)

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, & Animal Crossing all started on GameCube. Mario Party 5 revolutionized Mario Party games, I have to disagree with you on Sunshine revolutionizing Mario though. Pokemon Colosseum & XD:Gale of Darkness were in the category of Double Dash & Kirby AirRide. Sonic made the leap to 3rd Party by means of GameCube & GBA which could link together. Paper Mario TTYD was a refinement of the N64 Paper Mario, which serves as a shining beacon of what the series is supposed to be like. Goombella really deserves to appear more as a way of representing the Paper Mario series.
The GC introduced Krystal to the Star Fox series by means of its most experimental game. The GameCube saw the tech development of what would eventually be the 2010s Decade Kirby Main Series. GameCube had the capability of playing games at 720p HD & 1 game (Phantasy Star Online) actually came with an online adapter for it. GameCube even had a few other add ons like LAN & the GBA Player. Let's also not forget that GameCube had the best controller that Nintendo has ever made. I never will understand how GameCube supposedly got outsold by Xbox.

It's somehow everything I like from my games: Colorful artstyle, a varied cast of playable and collectible characters, NG+ to replay the game infinitely while collecting them all and a charming and goofy story that'll brighten my day. It's very VERY specific, but as a Pokemon only kid (my parents were rather strict on my gaming habits) Gotcha Force was my gateway into more action-focused games. Sadly, it never got a sequel and to my knowledge it's still very unique to this day, so I've been replaying it for the last 18 years and I've loved every second of it.

My favorite GameCube Game? By far: Tales of Symphonia. I saw my brother play it before I could give myself the chance to try it myself, and when I did, I was HOOKED! The characters, the combat system, the strategy, it was a true RPG treasure! Yes, the game is no longer GameCube exclusive, and the GC version dosn't have the updated content it would have in later re-releases, but only the GC version has that juicy 60fps framerate that everyone who played it loved! I cannot recommend this game enough!

I think it helps that the GameCube came around just around the time I graduated from high school and I had a job, so I could buy whatever games I wanted. I think I have sunk more hours into Phantasy Star Online Ep. 1&2 than I spent earning my degree. My friend and I honed each other's Soul Calibur 2 skills to a lethal edge. I was so hell-bent on earning an A rank on every mission of Sonic Adventure 2 that I have every inch of Metal Harbor committed to memory. And this is the tip of the iceberg. Even if the gameplay was kind of janky, i just loved moving around in that world and just being a part of it was amazing..
And of course, paper mario. Me and my dad would play through the first one together because i didnt know how to read yet at the time, but the thousand year door was out when i was finally old enough to play and enjoy the world on my own, and nothing will ever be able to match that feeling.

The GameCube lacked the majority of worthwhile third-party titles & online features the other consoles had, but the exclusives of GameCube are the only reason people care about it. PS2 & Xbox had their own great exclusives & MASSIVE libraries of games, but it's the GameCube exclusives that people talk about more than the GameCube itself.

    • @Chugalg
      @Chugalg 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Gamecube also had the best versions of many of the few multi-console titles it got. 007 Nightfire, Time Splitters 2, Soul Calibur 2, etc were all multi-console releases that shined on the Gamecube. The exclusives certainly helped sell consoles, but the 3rd party offerings weren't lacking in quality!

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

GameCube had 1 game with actual online by means of an adapter Phantasy Star Online. Xbox didn't have much in terms of great exclusives & really the GameCube should have beaten it by a large amount in terms of sales. Of course people underestimated the GameCube throughout the entirety of its era because they didn't understand it. Nearly half of GameCube's Library was multiconsole titles I thought. From what I heard GameCube was easier to develop for than its competitors for some 3rd Parties with it being preferred by Sonic Team. Also apparently GameCube could potentially play games at 720p.

    • @SRPC21
      @SRPC21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The original Xbox didn’t have many exclusives (nor many great ones), as good as Halo was so I’m not sure what you’re talking about there (the 360 was brilliant on both fronts but not its older brother).
It’s true that in terms of quantity Xbox and to a much greater extent the PS2 had more but when it comes to quality I have to disagree and say the GameCube library was superior in terms of the amount of AAA games.
What “amazing” exclusives did the original Xbox have which are genuinely on par with the best 20 the GameCube has?

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SRPC21 Well said & I question how Xbox sold as many units as it did to this day when it had the least to offer in 2005. Xbox was a joke compared to the 360 & I think Viva Pinata was 1 of the few exclusives Xbox actually had going for it. From what I understand the Disc Scratching was a huge problem & I can't remember which Xbox made the weird sounds if you kept it plugged in.
Still you shouldn't forget that PS2 had Kingdom Hearts 1&2 exclusive to it & managed to amass a library that could rival GameCube's. Of course the PS2 had the weakest hardware of the 4 Gen6 Consoles. I personally still prefer GameCube & know it got cheated out of the sales it deserved.

My siblings did their best to teach me how to play (and secretly had me be a computer player at first), and I had a blast with it. If there's 1 game series that deserves a revival, it's Custom Robo. The battles are fun and the story may be cheesy, but it kept my attention.
Smash bros. Melee kept catching me by surprise with some of the new characters showing up out of nowhere.

My 10+ games, not in any particular order:
    1. Super Smash Bros. Melee - An indeed a perfect sequel to Smash 64 and my most played Smash ever. Kept the charm, style, and the overall "little things" from 64 over to Melee while adding sooo much more! Debug Menu really helped give this game sooo much more life than it already has! You had the freedom to create flexible matches like: Metal Mario vs Shadow Mario vs Invisible Mario.
    2. Luigi's Mansion - Feel in love with it the minute I saw the box art! Game was genuinely creepy that could give you nightmares! Loved the controls, the ghosts and overall style and personality of the game! The music really stands out here! Sadly they've changed the style of the music in future games.
    3. Super Mario Sunshine - Loved how fluid Mario controlled, which is probably my favorite out of all the mainline Mario games. I loved trying to copy Shadow Mario to improve my skills without using Flood much.
    4. Starfox Adventures - Zelda meets Starfox. Played this game so much back then. Freakin loved the majestic ost composed by David Wise, who also made tracks for Diddy Kong Racing and the Donkey Country series! Sad you never really get to play as Krystal, until finding out years later Krystal was the main character originally in a game called Dinosaur Planet before Fox got slapped in the mix, turning it into Starfox Adventures.
    5. Timesplitters 2 - My introduction to the series and an awesome shooter, which is a spiritual successor to Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, which are two games that I loved very very much! Loved the story, the coop, the multiplayer with bots that have soooo much personality (Example: Seeing a Monkey blast you while dual wielding Tommy Guns and randomly doing backflips and cartwheels, which looks awesome and fitting haha), unlockable weird, and wacky characters you get by playing through the various challenges, and mapmaker was incredible.
    6. Timesplitters 3: Future Perfect - My second game in the series and an awesome sequel with a more in-depth Story, with more weird, wacky characters to unlock and play as! Years after this game, I went and got the 1st game in the series, which is exclusive to PS2.
    7. Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2 - My cousin introduced this game among others. Together with my siblings, a 4 player split-screen multiplayer JRPG, dungeon crawler epicness! This is one of those games that had me playing for YEARS. We've all had fun creating our characters. Loved the atmosphere, the music, the gameplay, soo much replayability! You get these things called Mags, which you feed to help boost your overall stats. The mechanics of the Mags are very similar to the Chao Garden in Sonic Adventure! I've never gotten the chance to play this online during the GC days, which you needed an internet adapter for, though without it, you could play this game for many many years. Nowadays you can play on PC through private servers. I believe the community is still active there. Now I'm on Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis, an open world free-to-play MMORPG. While a pretty cool game on it's own, It's not like the original Phantasy Star Online.
    8. Soul Calibur 2 - Loved Soul Calibur 1 on Dreamcast. I was excited when I saw Link was gonna be a part of the sequel! I played the crap out of this game!
    9. Sonic Adventures 2 - Chao Garden! I played the crap out of the Chao Garden! I remember liking Shadow as a character and loving the ost of this game. But Chao Garden!
    10. Zelda: Wind Waker - Just like Arlo, I was confused with the art choice when this game was first revealed. After it came out, I played the absolute crap out of this game and really enjoyed it!
    11. Eternal Darkness - An underrate gem of a game. A freakin awesome horror game! I remember playing and beating this game multiple times together with my older brother to get the different ending cinematics.
    12. Paper Mario Thousand Year Door - I played this years after the GC days. I played this AFTER Super Paper Mario, which released on Wii. Loved this game when I finally got my hands on it!
Other games I've played and enjoyed, though some I've never completed:
    Metroid Prime
    Metroid Prime 2
    Pikmin
    Pikmin 2
    Super Monkey Ball
    Super Monkey Ball 2
    Mario Kart Double Dash
All I can think of from the top of my head x-x

@@markasscop It helps that they're probably the best versions of those games.

My favourite GameCube game is Chibi-Robo! It was a wonderfully original premise with a very rich set of characters, and the story covered a baffling wide range of social and interpersonal issues. I’d love nothing more than to see a HD remake so more people could experience it’s quirky and offbeat charm. It deserves a lot more love IMO.

I was 6 when the GameCube came out and I had only 3 games for it and it was Wind Waker, Sonic Adventure battle 2, and Melee. I was horrible at all of them but you couldn't get me to stop playing them. It took me 2 years to beat those games but now, 20 years later, I look back and love the memories I have from those games and I'm glad I never gave up.

I thought it was kinda weird the top 3 spots were all taken up by Pokemon Channel but i respect the list Arlo!

I’ve wanted to play TTYD forever, but it is so expensive now, same with Chibi-Robo, which I’ve also wanted to play for a while.
Edit: I got the game about a week ago, and it’s somehow even better than I expected.

Super solid list Arlo!!! Man, as one of my first home consoles and chock full of some of my earliest and favorite video game memories, the GameCube just has such a solid library that holds up even today all things considered. One of my favorite consoles ever, I’m so happy I found it four to five years ago buried under other junk when I thought my mom donated it after we got the Wii, still works like a beauty today. As for recommendations, I’m sure you’ve heard these countless times but I gotta go with Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Pokemon Colosseum duology, and Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom! (Also funny story, I recently just got the first Spider-Man movie game, gonna give it a go with Ultimate Spider Man)

    I love this.
It’s wonderful to connect about the past playing the GameCube. That whole console era was probably the most connected I’ve ever felt before playing games online, all the time. It’s a feeling that will _never_ occur again.
Don’t get me started, Wind Waker is probably the game I wish were on the Switch _the most._ The farther I get from it, the more I love it, the more I miss it.
    Rogue Leader
    Tony Hawk 4
    Double Dash
    Game Boy Player
    GBA connectivity,
    e-reader stuff
It was a shame when the GC missed out on a lot of the third party games the X-Box and Sony were getting (Burnout 3 for instance), but Nintendo wouldn’t go quietly into the night, the Wii and the Switch would prove that Nintendo would still have the final word.
    Good times.
