Super Mario 3D All-Stars Review Retrospective Critique KingK
I feel like some people are confused about this, but to be clear: the ONLY reason I bought this is because I was making a video on it and wanted to be accurate. I wanted to make sure that I played the official version of the game and noted all of its problems. Otherwise, I most certainly would not have bought it. Even said as much pre-release, before I thought about writing a script.
I've never understood the whole "You're supporting this by buying it, so your opinion is invalid" argument. You probably cost Nintendo way more than the $60 you spent on this game by releasing this video to 178k subs. Imagine the thousands or even millions of dollars Nintendo's lost from even a fraction of those subs not buying the game. Hell, even for those without such a huge influence, it only takes convincing 1 other person to not buy it to break even, and 2 to put Nintendo in the red.

It's a channel that covers a lot of Nintendo games, so it's pretty reasonable to expect that at least some of them were at least thinking of buying the collection. Some of those people might have even been convinced by this video to get these games elsewhere. Therefore, Nintendo would lose their sales.

I never understand the mentality of “well you bought it so you can’t complain”. Like, if you buy a sandwich and it tastes terrible are you not allowed to complain about it because you bought and consumed it?
This is exactly what game reviewers are for. They're supposed to get the game, then shit on it if it's bad and praise it if it's good, so potential customers will know if they should buy it or not.

I get what you’re saying but it’s not quite a fair comparison. If you KNEW the sandwich was bad before you bought it, that’s on you. Most people knew the quality of this game (myself included) and bought it anyway. It’s convenient to be able to play those 3 games easily. But they needed love lol

When I was a kid they came out with the Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition. It had OG Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, AND Majora's Mask all in one disc. In 2003. If you told me we wouldn't get something better than that in 17 *years* I wouldn't believe you.
Don't forget the 20 minute demo of Wind Waker, as well as the montage of the games up until that point
What's funny is that that collection didn't have A Link to the Past, what could've been considered the best Zelda game up until OoT. When it was brought up how modern Nintendo would be willing to omit games for no reason, that immediately came to mind; they've already done it.

That game was a huge chunk of my childhood; I still remember how I got nightmares from playing Majora's Mask (a game that incidentally was actually made from Aonuma's nightmares and daydreams).

The reason I say it should be less than 60 is because it may drive too many people away. I'm not like this myself but if someone who isn't familiar with Zelda games and wanted to get one, they would look at links awakening and question why it costs as much as breath of the wild.
I don't judge games based on graphics or world size I just know a lot of people do. That's also why I think Nintendo would make a lot more money selling skyward sword for 30$. People are gonna take one look at the price and question why it costs as much as Breath of the wild, the newer game.

Yeh I would have loved 64 DS on this collection and probably would have bought it then. That game's problem was the DS control pad. Plus, I would have loved playing the minigames in it online with friends, though that may have been tricky to port.

I loved the Kirby's 20th anniversary game. Back then i didnt have wifi, so everytime i was bored or i was eating i would just turn on the wii and watch one of the three episodes. It was amazing.

Kirby Dream Collection and Metroid Prime: Trilogy are Nintendo (Wii) collections of the early 2010s so awesome that they feel like when Vicarious Visions made the N. Sane Trilogy and if Namco-Bandai even made their own remaster of one of its best (non-handheld) series, The Pac-Man World Trilogy of A-Mazment.

I remember Spirit Tracks on the DS asking if the player's left-handed or right-handed and I'm convinced that that game's the outlier! Skyward Sword on its release was a brand new gyro-heavy game that had five years of development, and there was no option to play it left-handed, *in a series where the protagonist up until that point had always been left-handed!* I don't understand Nintendo's mindset towards the left-handed at all, especially since Shigeru Miyamoto himself is left-handed!
Mario and Luigi Dream Team had the option for left handed people but then regressed in the Bowser Inside Story to just being right handed. I'm glad that I have some type of weird selective ambidextrousness or Skyward Sword would have been unplayable.

There's one thing that's really been bothering me recently about 3D all stars. Just recently (by the time I'm posting this anyway), Sakurai released a trailer and explanation for Steve from minecraft joining smash bros ultimate. In it, it showed how Steve has an entirely new gameplay style never before seen with any fighter in the game, while cramming as much Minecraft love into it, 6 brand new remixes of Minecraft songs, a brand new stage that looks like it was pulled straight out of Minecraft which also has 6 different forms/biomes, and sakurai explained how they had to rework EVERY STAGE IN THE GAME so it would work and make sense for Steve, all for $5.99. Sakurai and his team most likely put more time, effort, stuff, and love into one $6 dlc pack for a game, than Nintendo has with making a collection of 3 Mario games for $60. That's honestly really really sad.

Sakurai puts a ton of effort into his games, a lot more than many devs at Nintendo seem to.
One thing I didn’t like about Steve though is the music choice was dogshit. Yes minecraft tracks would be hard to remix to be fighting music, but you did it with pikmin. And even tracks that COULD work like pigstep are just not used. Instead, here are 7 tracks from spinoffs you probably haven’t played. There are many fanmade remixes of minecraft songs that you could definitely fight to, or hell maybe even put in the original Sweden just for history’s sake. Otherwise, sublime. They were really faithful with the moveset, stage, everything. The music section was sadly not given that

This is my exact opinion as well. I want to be done with Nintendo at this point but the games themselves (when they actually release them instead of rereleasing more Wii U games) are just the most fun I've ever had. Most of my gaming experiences these days come from playing the restored Wii online by fans and fan-created mods such as Super Mario Star Road.

Henry Conner yes, because it’s limited release and everyone is scared not to get it in time. I panicked when it was revealed because I knew physical copy preorders would sell out immediately. (Somehow I still managed to get one from Best Buy). People who weren’t fortunate enough to get the physical color have to buy it digitally, and they aren’t allowed to have the mindset of getting it later on rather than soon because of limited release.

They need to bite the bullet and issue a re-design, fix all extant Joycons with the new stick model etc. - if Microsoft could replace millions of systems for RRoD, there's no reason Nintendo can't corporately "man up" and admit that they are at fault, and do something to fix it (and no, sending out replacements that are doomed to fail in the same way because they didn't address the underlying issue is not fixing it).
If you are old enough to remember super Mario all stars on the snes when it came out, the effort put into that collection hammers home the point of how poor this new collection is.

well maybe because those are 2d games, lol. all they had to do was changing the sprites and music, that's it. if they change the engine or models on 3d all stars, they have to worry of accidentally "tainting" the game and be bashed for something bad or having some game breaking bugs in the games. (also since the source code for sm64 was leaked, they probably don't care about sm64 since players can just add what they want on pc.)

-HD native resolution scaler (up to 4k)
-60fps
-Modern dual stick camera controls
-Infinite render distace
-Ultra high quality mods and rom hacks
-Bug fixes
-Can be played on PC, meaning you can use mouse and keyboard, or any controller ever made.

Because a random fan is passionate about this project, but for Nintendo it's a business practice. So why pump lots of money and time into making these versions the optimal version we've all been waiting for, when the casual player will buy it just as much and probably won't notice the things pointed out in the video? This is not meant to rag on fans, not by any means, but a lot of people will not realize things like frames, screen ratio, button remapping, etc. This, I think, only shows how Nintendo banks a lot of their products on their customers lack of knowledge, and honestly, this feels like they take advantage of them.

@@sodaftpm185 what do you mean by horrible paid WiFi? Spyro reignited was an awesome recreation, anticipation of BOTW 2, many other games that have been ported. I think the main problem many people are seeing is N64 hasn’t been ported, GBA games, and this last release of Super Mario where they slapped $60 on games that should be $10-$15 by now. He even explained in the video crash and Spyro were $40 when released but they were touched up and had added levels. I’m not saying the switch is perfect but I have some hope in it. There’s nothing wrong with it.
Similar thing with me on twitter, and was labelled "toxic" by dozens of people... and I've been playing (and loving) Nintendo games for decades! They're the same people who decry capitalism but yet somehow allow nostalgia-peddlers, Nintendo, a free pass.
I get the impulse of defending Nintendo. I was against KingK at this video's premise, and only came around due to the presented evidence. Sad as it is, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of widespread, accessible conversations about preserving legacy in gaming. Those I DO see are either extremely niche, pertaining to specific games or series with cult followings, or are extremely technical/philosophical and alienate more casual gamers (which is how I'd describe myself and many of the people I know).
I'm open to suggestions for other videos/articles on the topic, but to date this is the best video I have seen on the topic, and as a result I understand how it would be a tough sell for ANYONE in a medium as limited as a Reddit post.
I'd cite the Smash Bros series as the perfect example of what game collections should strive to be. The Smash Bros games are completely original content and shouldn't have any obligation to be anything other than a great fighting game, yet they still always manage to cram in an extensive collection of trailers, music, sound effects, trophies and stickers, etc. Hell, Brawl even had playable demos of NES games. If a fighting game can include that much legacy content, a game thats entire purpose is to pay tribute to a series' past absolutely should be able to.
not just NES games. it also included 64 games aswell with starfox 64 and OOT, heck the japanese version had access to fire emblem and mother 2 from the super famicom.
smash wiiu also had this feature with many returning games, tho the 64 titles had disappeared with more NES titles taking their place.

Nintendo has always been anti-consumer, they've always screwed partners and developers over, and they've always had a very narrow mentality when it comes to business practices. It's like their business team is completely opposite of their game development and engineering teams, who embrace weird new ideas.

Game prices in general Nintendo seems completely and absolutely greedy above almost anyone else. Also a lot of their other decision lately have been super sketchy...the joycon issue, the smash bros tourney reward, their entire online, making things limited time, fully priced ports and so fourth...

For a company that hates emulators so much, they're doing a pretty damn good job at making sure emulating their games remains the best (and for an embarrassing amount of games, the only) way to play many, many of their older games. The Virtual Console concept has been around since 2006 and at no point in any of its iterations (including its most recent form where it's tied to a monthly subscription) did they ever offer Gamecube games. And of course the one time they decide to rerelease Sunshine, it's tied to a half-assed anniversary collection that costs $60...
EDIT: A good personal example, I lost my personal copy of Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. I no longer even have a Gamecube controller to play it on my Wii. And of course Nintendo never rereleased it on anything, so literally the only way I can play it is through emulation. Guess you didn't need my money after all, Nintendo.
I'm making a 90s/2000s nostalgia room, so I already have an old setup anyway. But TTYD is NOTORIOUS for being one of the hardest Nintendo games to actually be able to play. If you didn't already have everything it'd run you a pretty penny. A vintage TV set, a Gamecube, the controller, a memory card, the cables and cords, and then the copy of the game itself, which will set you back about $125. Ridiculous

I think that mainly the reason people consider this collection so important is because remaking SM64 would just work SO perfectly for the anniversary. Adding the other 3D games to a 64 remake, remastered like 64 or not, would be so great for new and older players. Then they didn't change 64 at all and overpriced the whole thing, and made it limited time, AND messed up controls.

I've noticed with these companies who are at their highest points, tend to get super cocky and complacent with their products, thinking they can get away with pretty much anything. Remember when Sony thought they could get away with charging the ps3 for $599 at launch because the ps2 was a flipping success?

I mean each of those PS3s did cost $800 to make so they were losing $200 for each console sold. That's why they removed the PS2 support from future models because it was just simply too expensive.
That's not the reason Sony sold it at that price. Even at $599, they sold it at a loss. The console itself was expensive because of the Cell processor, Emotion Engine and the Blu-ray drive.
I don’t get how Nintendo doesn’t realize that stunts like this are why people proceed down the very path they try to prevent them from going down: emulation. People WANT to play Nintendo’s games from it’s near 40 years of being a game company. Younger fans who are just getting into Nintendo and want to play these old games don’t have an NES, SNES, 64, GC, or even a Wii to play them legitimately. These younger fans constantly find themselves in these situations: I want to play “X character’s” game. The options are like so. You either shell out hundreds of dollars for both a copy of the game AND the console to play it on (which Nintendo makes absolutely no money off of btw) or you buy it off the Wii U E-Shop (assuming it’s on there) which you likely don’t have because nobody bought that thing. And what a lot of younger people who find themselves in this situation don’t have is money or parents who don’t want you paying over $100 just to play a video game. So, in that case, why not emulate it? Instead of dumping hundreds of dollars into games like EarthBound or Fire Emblem Path of Radiance which doesn’t even go to Nintendo because you cannot buy these games new anymore, why not just spend five minutes downloading an emulator and the game to play through it and get a shit ton of options to make the experience better in terms of display and aesthetics? Spending hundreds of dollars on eBay to play a 20 year old game is not a suitable way to play that game. Most people only emulate because Nintendo does not provide them a feasible alternative to play these games today. If Nintendo put older games on the Switch, especially those that go for $100s of dollars on eBay, MUCH less people would emulate them I guarantee it. You cannot kill emulation, Nintendo. There will always be a ROM side with every single Nintendo game on it ready to download. What you can do is provide feasible alternatives to play these games on the Switch.
I seriously don't get why Nintendo don't realize this. What's the point of cracking down on emulation when you can just make the games available on your store? I wouldn't emulate old SNES and N64 games if I could buy them for 5-10 dollars, and I suspect this is true of a lot of people. If you don't make them available for digital download AND you crusade against emulation, you're saying the only way to play these games is to buy the old console and carts on eBay which... doesn't make you any money anyway?
Sadly though, I guess we have our answer now... they WANT these games to be impossible to find so they can Disney Vault them and drum up tons of hype for limited releases of games that predate the Obama Administration.

Nessential I totally feel you on Path of Radiance. I just got into the fire emblem series and really want to play some of the older games. I can play some of the newer ones on my 3ds but anything before that is lost to time. Especially GameCube titles. Good luck getting your hands on anything from that era.
Totally agree, and it’s the same thing Apple was smart enough to realize, and so they invented iTunes: people will pay for something if you make it convenient for them to buy. Before iTunes, there was a ton of digital piracy of songs, because there was really no other way to get them digitally. And a lot of the tracks had shitty audio quality. But then iTunes happened-it gave people high quality audio, the ability to buy single tracks at a reasonable price, one big place to organize your library, and it was easy to use- and it was a massive success. People will pay for something if there is an easy way to do so. Nintendo are numbskulls and do not provide that way, thereby losing out on so much money, and, more importantly, goodwill with the public.
Lets hope this is a lesson Nintendo will learn. They have so much going for them and are the most successful and beloved Japanese company. They've become a household icon in themselves. I'd hate to see them ruin that beautiful reputation because of an abysmal business practice. They deserve and need this criticism just as much as they do praise

It's such a missed opportunity when you still have many of the people who created these games working at Nintendo, but they're not given the chance to update their games.
Comparing this to Crash again, the developers of Twinsanity still have the design docs and would let them be used in a remake to truly finish the game they didn't have enough time to complete.
When I first got into Crash, around the time of CTR:NF's release I was constantly thinking "why doesn't Nintendo do this with Mario?" every time I read anything about Crash. Bringing back obscure characters; canonising "spin-off" characters like Nitros Oxide; experimenting with different art styles; so on.

I personally do not see you being a downer. You mentioned qualities this collection has and more importantly, where it could improve. This is a voice a lot of people are afraid to express because we love the company so much. Nintendo could use info like this to improve the game with patches (which could tie into March 31), & could also improve company decisions. Even if they don't, at least it spreads awareness. I see this as a positive video!

I think he got his points across very well and makes some amazing arguments, which I 100% agree with. But I think his tone and aggression made half the video feel more like angry venting by a negatively biased fan and less an objective retrospective on some current and even old problems Nintendo has, and how this new game is problematic.
If Nintendo really hates that people are pirating their games, they need to work harder at preserving their classics. Nintendo thinks they are losing money because of these preservation efforts but they're losing money because they FAILED to preserve their games. Remember that time Nintendo gave out the ocarina of time/master quest disc as a freebie for preordering wind waker? I guess Nintendo forgot how they used to give away legacy content as an incentive to buy new games, rather than the legacy content being the new game.
I personally don't think that was a particularly good move either, it limited a lot the distribution of OOT/MQ so the people who bought a GC after the release of WW or didn't want to buy it day one were screwed

Save states, mods, filters, cheats,, higher resolutions, texture packs, free online, etc are available through emulation. Even official remasters don't offer all of that. So why on earth would someone pay for an inferior product than a free one? Make something worth buying and people will buy it.

They can offer support for features that you have to tweak yourself - ips patching and compatibility with any controller you buy, as long as you get the right usb adaptor.

As someone who worked in studios before, I can assure you that many designers and developers at (or associated with) Nintendo are probably not happy with these decisions either. They would love to give these games a proper HD remake akin to OoT3D/MM3D or WWHD.

im gonna vent about Nintendo for a sec. There is a lot I really dislike about Nintendo. Every game being $60, their lack of legacy content support, their policy on glitches and their insistence on playing their games the way they want you to play it, joy cons being the worst controller simply due to hardware failure, their lack of transparency, their hate of fan games and mods, and more if I kept thinking about it. I often ask myself why i still love Nintendo so much and I've decided that I love the game designers, programmers, artists, all the people putting in the man hours on their original games. I do not like their Public Relations, marketers, pricing people, port maker people, and the men in suits making all these anti-consumer moves. Nintendo is such a lopsided company, they have the most brilliant and talented game and console developers in the business, but their stubbornness and overall anti-consumerness is really really irritating. I don't know who to blame and i of course blame nintendo overall but i wish Nintendo would just wash out all the filthy decisions and actions from their company and let their game designers shine.
Their corporate culture prevents any criticism from reaching upper management. They cannot talk back or object, no matter how stupid their decisions are. It's like watching someone shoot themselves in the foot, and you can't stop them because they have the gun.

When I copped my Switch back in April, I downloaded the online console thinking the first game I had in mind to play was the DKC series. Realizing it wasn’t there was such a huge disappointment. I remember always wanting a Wii growing up with the thought of having a Virtual console with every retro game at hand and available to purchase. And now having the Switch with very little games interested to play, I literally went months without touching it mainly to the fact that Nintendo lets their consumers starve for games they don’t even need much effort in re-releasing.

3D world for switch was in development before 3D all stars hit shelf’s. If it was in development after 3D all stars hit shelf’s, then I believe that it wouldn’t have bowsers fury, or half the improvements they made to 3D world. Nintendo would have seen how little they had to do for 3D all stars for it to sell well, and would’ve done the same for 3D world. We should be thanking our lucky stars that that didn’t happen

Exactly. I grew up with Nintendo, Nintendo was my childhood. I had a Wii, 3ds XL, Wii U, and a Switch. I love them and their games, consoles, and most of what they do.

Nintendo can’t legally shut down emulators as they’re not against copyright law. It would be like cancelling can openers because they allow you to have canned beans that you **could’ve** stole. They are, however, allowed to take down ROM sites as putting ROMs on the web for free is illegal and against copyright law. Also, with the right tools you *can* dump ROMs legally from your console to a computer, no matter what console it is (currently). You would just need an emulator to *LEGALLY* play these games, making emulators legal. Nintendo emulating games and selling them at full price is absolute bullshit though.

@@Mewtwo_150 Uhm, no. Emulation is a ground up rebuild of a console built to work on another console (ex: Dolphin for PC or Not64 for Wii). A console has an OS of its own. Because emulation isn’t from the original console, there are some glitches that don’t happen on console, to prove that emulation and console are not one and the same. For example, on Dolphin emulator, in Super Mario Sunshine, there is a glitch where you can finish the cleanup in Serena Beach early that does not exist on console. (I would go into further detail but I know next to nothing on Sunshine.) Also, Paper Mario ROM hacks are prone to crash on N64, but not as much on emulator. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
To put salt into the injury: Mario AT LEAST has an anniversary collection... Doesn't anyone remembers Metroid Prime Trilogy? Or the 2D games? Because Nintendo certainly don't.
