Thanks for the fix! I ran my bead of silicon on the outside of the ice maker between the ice maker body and wall of the fridge underneath. When I removed the shelf under the ice maker I was able to get the caulking gun in there easier than inside. I also have no more frost forming in the ice maker.

I have been reading and researching on this as well. I have watched tons of videos/blogs. And found an HVAC tech. Do Not Turn On the Energy Saver button. I have copy and pasted what he wrote below as i believe its very insightful! I have had absolutely no issues with this fridge at all, and I have owned it for over a year. It wasn't until recently when one of my kids had pulled to hard on the middle drawer and it wouldn't shut/seal completelym which wasnt noticed until a day or two down the road. Which then caused the ice maker to overwork, and over freeze. (same scenario as the space in freezer that this video is caulking) I still love my fridge, even after having a lil snafu with the freezer. I would buy it again in a heart beat.
From: Adam Spears 2 Years Ago
As an HVAC tech, I can see right through the b.s. of the whole "energy saver" awareness that is force fed to the masses by the EPA & appliance manufacturers.
First of all, those heaters are needed on a daily basis in the refrigerator. They are defrost heaters. & quite a few refrigerators will also have Mullion panel heaters in the doors.
These heaters are not engineered in the refrigerator as an "optional" feature that is not necessarily needed.
These heaters are needed on a daily basis, to keep the refrigerator ' evaporator coil from icing up, & to keep frost build up from opening the doors throughout the day.
But the EPA has force fed the masses thar everything has to be "energy saver". The EPA forces manufacturers to come up with some b.s. way to make their appliances run using less electricity. Otherwise the manufacturer gets fined by the government for not being in compliance with their regulations.
This is why the "Energy Saver" feature turns of the heaters....the very heaters that should never be turned off.
A refrigeration unit has to draw at least a certain minimum amount of amperage to meet the typical cooling demands of the home owner. So to give the home owner the option to turn off heaters that are needed to allow the refrigerator to opporate properly; & call that "Energy Saving" is just a lame way to perpetuate this constant fear of "too much energy consumption is bad" to the masses.
People, if you want your refrigerator to give you the most amount of cooling, while drawing the least amount of amperage, then this is what you do:
NEVER push your refrigerator completely up against the wall. This forces the compressor to work harder (draw more electricity) because it cuts off air flow through the bottom & back of the unit. It also will lead to dirt getting clogged in the condenser coil & condenser fan blades; which both will cause the compressor to draw more electricity; resulting in an increase of your electric bill. & eventually, your compressor will burn out prematurely. -Not a cheap fix BTW.
Secondly, once a month carefully pull out your refrigerator & with a soft brush (not a wire brush!) Dust the compressor, condenser fan blade, & condenser coil. Turn off the unit to do this. It only takes a minute or 2, then plug the unit back in & don't open the refrigerator doors during those few minute that you unplug it.
If need be, use the brush accessory on a vacuum cleaner to carefully vacuum the dust particles.
Do all this once a month. Don't turn on the Energy Saver button because that turns off the heaters.
I get a kick out of people because I will run a service call on a refrigerator with the Energy Saver light illuminated & the customer will say they are using it but their electric bill remains the same rather than coming down.
Then I will notice that they push the refrigerator completely up against the wall. So I pull it out & there are layers upon layers of nasty filth, dirt, hair, toys, moldy bread that's probably been there for a year, dead mice, you name it!
& they wonder why the energy saver button doesn't do a damp thing for their electric bill.
& on those calls, the evaporator coils are usually iced up. Because the heaters that the Energy Saver keeps off are needed to defrost the dam thing!
Do yourselves a huge favor & apply what I have said in this post.
-also, on my way out their door & after cleaning the coils on their refrigerator, I'll notice that the condenser coil on their AC Unit outside is just as clogged as their refrigerator was.
& they wonder why their electric bills won't come down!!!
AC, electric heating, & refrigeration equipment accounts for most of a home owner's electric bill. If you keep them clean, you save yourself a lot of head ache, hassle & MONEY! If you neglect them, the quality of your air in your house, the quality of the cooling in your house & refrigerator diminish signifigantly. & you are giving your hard earned money to the CEO of the electric company...which is no doubt a multi-millionaire.
So if you don't mind buying a rich person another Lamborghini, then neglect your AC & refrigerator coils & keep them dirty. The CEO of your electric company thanks you.

What a great write-up I'm very glad that I read this because that is my biggest thing about the ice in the water compressor and that's one of the features I really like is having the ice in the water on the door this was very educating thank you. Because I kept looking against the Samsung whirlpool my question is where is the energy saver button so I don't push it when I do get the Samsung in the next week or so

Also thank you Tricia I've been up late night trying to research the best fridge and brand, it is rated for my money without going overboard who has the best deals and why this was the best I ever heard. My GE died side by side and I always wanted the bottom freezer from an apartment I had years ago. So that's the reason it was the compressor , but I love the water feature in the ice , and that seems to be what everyone seems to complain about what this now with the clarity it'll be much easier to make my choice and the education behind it , and I had it only a few years but it was given to me, was like 8 to 10 years old so I thought this is good I was impressed with that but now all the things that you saying , we do clean the back and we do take care the fridge in the back, so more than likely because there's always been a lot of hair and stuff underneath it still seems a mess like we didn't clean it so that's definitely good information. it probably is that energy saver button so where is that so I know where I can find it, before I get it , thank you again.

Same fridge. I got it around Feb 2017. About a month ago I started noticing some water would drip out when I would get ice. Tonight it ran out of ice and when I pulled the dispenser out the top was completely frosted over. I’m hoping I see some real solutions in the comments. Thanks for posting this video.

Me and my dad have a similar issue with the ice maker in our Samsung fridge frosting up. It frosted up on us today as well. I watched your video and it didn't seem to work with our fridge (might be a different model/an update probably stopped it from working, idk). If this fix stopped working on your fridge, I might have a different fix that might just work. My dad found it on a video (forgot who made it) and we've tried it on our Samsung fridge multiple times and had no issues at all so far.
1.) Press and hold the freezer and lighting buttons simultaneously until you hear a beep.
2.) Keep pressing the freezer button until you get to rd (the defrost option, I think).
3.) Let it sit there and defrost (you'll hear constant beeping at first, but it'll last for about 20 minutes).
4.) Take out the ice tray and use a blow dryer to help speed up the process (optional).
Hopefully you and anyone else reading this comment found it helpful if the option in the video doesn't work. Sorry if it's too long.
    It's actually Fd not rd.

The part number is DA81-05595A. I cannot recommend off the shelf non food safe silicone but It will seal the gap.

Have read a few articles of people having similar problems! I want to state I do feel Samsung has a design flaw here, those not able to complete the fix on their own have every right to be angry! I have herd items such as class law suit and such and would not blame you!
This fridge is not a cheap fridge! My overall experience with Samsung has been poor! When I bought my home it had a brand new Samsung stove, no dishwasher, microwave range hood combo and a whirlpool fridge. We wanted a fridge with ice maker and the dishwasher and microwave were a must, where the stove was less then a year old and for an unknown reason to me my wife wants matching appliances we bought all Samsung.
The Microwave needed electronic repair under warranty, it is the bottom control style which has know issues with mature from boiling on the stove causing electronic issues. First time fix was covered but next time will be at my cost. The Dish washer gives an E3 error from time to time which states it is detecting water outside the sealed unit. Reset the breaker and works fine, no water or leaks found, samsung would not send a tech unless the reset did not work. Has happened 4 times in 3 years. Then there is the fridge which have attempted a repair as displayed in the video.
Long and short, I which I had my Whirlpool products, buying again it would be Whirlpool and I will strongly look at Maytag.
Hope the video is of help. I used a indoor/outdoor non oil based, quick dry chocking for the fix. I applied by hand, wear cloves, clean up with water but do not get too close to the seam as it is 90% covered once the wire shield is put back on.
Reason I did not kick up a stink with Samsung? I do not have that type of time on my hands, with the defrost and fix it took less then 3hrs and that was not full time at it. If they are not willing to do the right thing that is their company issue, I am not going to be their quality/customer service department. It will catch up with them!
As stated in the video this may be caused with putting too much in the fridge and pushing the sides out! I do not feel I have ever done that and even if it is the case, poor design.
These are my opinions only! This is my fix which may not be the best fix, ultimately it is my fix and I have to live with it. Currently I am happy with my fix! Sharing in case it helps someone else!

I feel your pain. Bought the whole package... DW didn't dry dishes, no heating element installed. (swapped that for a maytag) Microwave quit at 1 yr, bought an identical one and kept the old one for parts. The oven cant decide what temp to heat to. On my third temp sensor. Apparently they get fried if you use self cleaning. And now I've got a fridge that's 10degrees warmer than the door says. I'd like to launch all these appliances through the front door at HD. Bought one just like yours 9/2016. In January 2017, ice maker compartment was frozen solid. Samsung tech came and thawed it and on a subsequent visit, replaced the ice maker and auger assembly and applied the sealer. Since that time ice maker has stopped making ice at least 10 times. Each time, I've had to thaw it out with a hair dryer (even though they say not to use one because you can distort plastic parts with it. Don't ask why a steamer doesn't distort plastic). The ice maker will then start making ice again for about a month. The thawing and disassemby process is such a BIG PITA that now I just go buy some ice and keep a bag in the freezer. There is a class-action lawsuit against Samsung and I would urge all those with Samsung ice maker problems to sign up. Just Google Samsung ice maker class action suit.

We paid about $400 for parts and labor for the "new and improved" auger and fan assembly that Samsung indicates is supposed to fix the issue. The frost problem was back in no time. I sealed the ice room enclosure and had no improvement. I remove the frost and ice buildup frequently, often removing the ice maker (which is not a big deal once you have done it once), sometimes the auger assembly, and think I have mastered it. Samsung chooses to not make it right. They have made various fix recommendations. From what I have seen nothing resolves the issue. Other than this issue it has been a nice fridge.

I have the exact same model with the exact same trouble. I have to break out the ice every two weeks. To get my ice basket out, I have to repeatedly hit it on the side until it breaks out and now the plastic basket is cracked. Sux for a $3000 appliance. It helps if you use a hair dryer and actually melt everything out and dry it with a towel. That seems to last a bit longer. Next I'm going to try the silicone sealant idea.

I have a Appliance repair business and repair this problem quite frequently. I read a service bulletin a couple of years ago and they said to replace the auger assembly and Ice maker. Also to check if bottom of Ice maker cabinet is sealed tight. Use a flashlight on the bottom left underneath it and if you see light then you will have to seal it! They sell a special silicone for this! This auger assembly has been redesigned a few times! Apparently the fan on the auger assembly slows down or stops intermittently creating excessive moisture! This ice maker removal is not a amateur job! If you make a mistake and damage the freon gas tube you will have to replace the refrigerator!

    Want to provide an update.
This fix did improve the performance but I still needed to defrost every 6 months or so but build up was not as bad.
Roughly six months ago though my ice machine stopped working and I had the unit replaced. During the replacement I talked with the tech who suggested to not leave the ice machine full and on. What I have been doing is turning the ice machine off when I go away and either bagging the ice or turning the ice machine off during times of little use. This does seem to work at this point and have not had to defrost the ice maker in the last 6 months.
All this said, Samsung did a horrific job and are backing their poor design with no customer service. The price paid on these fridges and the need to micro manage them in this fashion is completely unacceptable. Unfortunately I need to make it acceptable as tossing it out is not an option for me.

The other item I will mention. The Fridge has started making a buzzing sound that requires the manual defrost mode needing to be engaged. I am told that this is do to ice build up in the back and the fan starts rubbing up against the ice. I have found putting it in manual defrost mode which is shown at the 40 second mark of the video eliminates the noise for 7 to 9 months if you set it and leave it over night.
I hope to make a video that shows a more long term fix which requires the manual defrost mode and some panel disassembly to make sure all the ice is gone. Will post when I decide I had enough and do it.

I see this situation with Samsung ice makers nearly every day. Yes, Samsung has issued a repair bulletin. In addition to sealing the ice compartment with the expensive RTV, you need to replace the ice maker with the updated model, install the Y-clips, and also ensure the water fill tube placement is correct. For the problem with the fresh food section evaporator fan hitting ice... Samsung has put out a kit to fix it. It involves adding some insulating strips under and behind the evaporator, replacing the drain heat probe, and replacing the drain tubes in the machinery compartment. Also, if the defrost sensor has been covered in ice, it is recommended to replace that, as well. While the cover is off, it wouldn't hurt to use a steamer to clear out the drain line. One last thing... if the fresh food evaporator cover assembly shows any sign of damage (it's mostly styrofoam) it should also be replaced. When the cover goes back on, ensure all wires and such are arranged as to not cause a gap in the sealing surfaces of the cover where air can leak in or out. Good luck.

A lot of the time the water in line freezes stopping water from going into the ice maker. An easy fix with a hair dryer, all you have to do is pull the ice bin out and blow warm air at the back to melt the blockage.

there is a service bulletin from samsung. ice maker and auger motor assembly need replaced.there is also clips added to the coil under the icemaker. and using food grade silicone to seal the box so no warm air can leak in. THIS IS NOT A RECALL as it is not a SAFETY issue. samsung usually covers this under warranty. so to all the people complaining, yes its an issue. yes it can be fixed. not a big deal.

I have now a few messages from users where the build up of ice has caused plastic to break off from the auger and become logged in the ice. Please send me a message if this has happened to you, document with pictures.

The fix is easy. Disassemble the front component of the ice maker to expose the freon tube from the compressor at the top of the cavity. Be careful when slightly dislodging this tube from a support holding this tube at the top by gently moving the front end of tube loop down a half inch. Thoroughly de-ice or thaw the quarter inch or so of ice surrounding this tube and reassemble the removed component of the ice maker. Normal de-icing the ice maker does not thaw the tube. When I accomplished the above, the ice maker functions like the day I purchased the refrigerator.

      Kirk,
Regarding my Samsung refrigerator (model RF28HMEDBSR), about 5 or 6 months ago we were having difficulty with the ice maker frosting and freezing over and getting wet mushy ice from the dispenser. I did the factory deicing procedure several times over several weeks complete with the visible interior of the ice maker clean and dry. Sure enough, the same problem showed itself again in 3 - 5 days. After much frustration, I removed both components from the ice maker cavity (besides the ice bin) and inspected everything which looked good except the copper freon loop at the very top was froze over with a half inch of ice surrounding the entire copper tube. Noting that someone said to be very care not to over bend or otherwise damage this tube as it will make the entire refrigerator inoperable, I proceeded to thaw the freon tube with my wife's hair dryer on medium heat to as to not melt the surrounding plastic. Then when the tube was clean
and dry, I assembled the components and for the past 5 - 6 months, the refrigerator operates like the day we purchased it. Just before writing this, I rechecked the ice maker again by removing the ice bin and then with a phillips screwdriver I removed the vented plastic just under the upper side of the cavity (when the very visible one screw is removed, one also have to apply a bit of pressure to a small catch on the left side with a blade screwdriver to dislodge the vented plastic piece.). With this, one can visually see the copper freon loop and mine was clean and free of ice unlike it was 6 months ago. If I had found it to be iced over, a hair dryer blowing in front of the loop would deice it without more removal than just the one screw on the right side to remove the plastic vent described above. I would first unplug the refrigerator prior to doing anything described above. We are very confident that my refrigerator is operating to spec. The refrigerator is very satisfactory for us and have purchased several other Samsung large kitchen appliances and to date, all have given us the performance we expected. Hope this will help to make your
      refrigerator satisfactory for you. Jerry

My ice tray which stopped making ice about a month ago is now frozen and I cannot remove it. I purchased brand new from Lowes at the cost of about $3,000. No recall or law suit that I am aware of. I have made a post where some owners report the frost up causing ice build up that ends up chipping little pieces of plastic when the auger turns. This may push a recall if reported as recalls usually come when there are health/danger risks. I would think consuming shards of plastic would be a health risk.

This fridge has to be leveled by having the front of the fridge raised by turning the adjustable legs counter clockwise. Once the wheels are about a half inch off the ground stop raising it.

BellyUpFish don’t touch the back legs. Just the front ones. If you open the bottom freezer door you’ll have easy access to the adjusting legs. Like I said earlier... the legs have slots in them so you can use a flat head screw driver to turn them counter clockwise to raise them. A half inch up to 3/4 of an inch should be more than enough. Don’t forget to let the ice thaw or do a force defrost.

So... I ordered a Samsung fridge RF23HCEDBSR with a 5 year Best Buy(geek squad) protection plan, then just recently canceled the order due to so many bad reviews and a pending lawsuit on the ice maker which eventually effected the fan which eventually effected the compressor and cooling. I ended up ordering an LG LFXC24726S with a 3 year protection plan from Best Buy. However, LG seems to have just as many bad reviews... well, now what? Lol...I’m going to live with the LG and if it goes out... my next fridge will not have a dispenser in the door or maybe no dispenser at all... bagged ice and ice trays seems to be the way to go if you want a reliable refrigerator.
Sub zero fridges are like 10k, but last 20+ years (no in-door dispensers). In 20 years I could end up buying 3-7 different fridges at 2k-4K a pop... the Sub Zero might be worth it in the long run 🤪

luoaR ogaitnaS I don't know about Sub-Zero but most refrigerators are the same and have common parts as LG and samsung they're essentially the same company with the same parts it's like saying a Kia is different from a Hyundai and even other brands like GE and others essentially use the same parts that a handful of companies manufacture and if you do your research you'll find that all the brands are essentially owned by a very small number of giant corporations if you want a fridge that last long buy a cheap one that does not have electronic stuff and features just a simple one but in my opinion that would be an ugly fridge but a reliable one

I am also aware that both Samsung and LG are Made in South Korea... most fridges that have ice makers, door dispensers, and lots of electronics are going to need servicing eventually... that’s why Sub Zero has excellent ratings, they don’t mess with those features to keep their reliability and 5 star reviews. Also your ice maker is not installed properly! The bottom plastic tray with the screw should be straight and the left clips on the top!

Thank you for the tip. I personally never had this apart but it was service by a Samsung repairman. I contacted them and it was replaced though at my cost.

What a horrible design. Makes no scene to put an ice maker in the refrigerator zone. Oh my, look at my new "French Door" style fridge. Latest and greatest. No! Also studies show that Samsung and LG have more problems and you may have problems finding service centers to work on them because they built for ease of mfg but not repair.
The manufactures shove these models because they are the hottest thing. They do this because they are about $1000 more than a side by side and have a bigger profit margin.
I am doing a kitchen remodel and can't find any brand that makes a reliable refrigerator. I want a reliable, quite side by side but can't find one that has the features of my 20 year old Amana. Those features are only in the new French door models that I hate the design because the freezer is useless to find buried items. Good Luck.

Oh ya, don't forget to tell all your social media friends and relatives to stay away from Samsung appliances.
