- Samsung refrigerator been making grinding noise due ice buildup around copper pipe .
While fixing it I decided to begin my first TH-cam video ever with this repair guide.

Use it for the refrigerator, set it to be in off mode for 30 - 45 minutes to allow ice build (at the cooling coil), to melt off. Personally did this for over 2 years +
Also remember to vacuum the dust built up at the vent on the side bottom of the refrigerator.
Also pull entire refrigerator out, un-screw the metal plate at the back bottom and clean the built up dust inside.

Here's a very simple fix that actually works. Buy a 24-hr timer that allows 15 minute intervals. Set it to be in off mode for about 45 to 30 minutes daily at 3 or 4m in the am. Plug the stupid Samsung fridge into it. Problem solved. Have tested this for a couple of months now, and no more fan noise. You're welcome.

Do you have to let it defrost first or remove the current ice buildup?
Thanks for this tip. I had an extra smart plug lying around so I figured I'd give this try before dismantling half of the fridge. Set it to turn the fridge off for 30 min at 3 am. So far today no fan noise at all.
Just did my second manual defrost. Figured I’d try this timer trick too. I’ll check back in if I have to do another manual defrost.

It took me longer, because I couldn't figure out how to get the water filter out and there was a lot of ice. The noise was getting louder and I was scared to go to sleep. So I tried your video. Thank you so much. This 67 year old lady did it! And as a retiree, I'm happy to save a repair bill. :)

First video that came up for the obnoxious fan noise, and it was spot on. The only thing I would add is that the ice is caused by dust accumulation on the vents and such in the back of the fridge. Just need to pull it out and vacuum it up. Thank you for the very helpful video!

For the last 3 days Mine has been making whir/whoosh sound in about the interval of a heartbeat. It only happens a few times a day. Do you think cleaning the vents will fix it?
@@chrisrios1709 I discovered that mine was making that sound (at least, it *seems* like the sound you are describing) when the ice maker freezes up. The “wish” sound is the clutch on the dumper mechanism slipping to prevent the maker from destroying itself.
If your ice maker is functioning properly, then it’s a different sound and I’m clueless - sorry! : )
The back of mine was full of dust! After vacuuming it out I had to switch the hose around to blast the rest out!

Nice video. The blow dryer trick works but is usually just a short term fix. You have to identify the underlying issue(s) that caused that symptoms in the first place. Otherwise, it will most likely happen again.) There are often a few things that cause the issue. In this case, it's not the fan, but the ice build up causing several issues including a warmer refrigerator (if not addressed early on.)
I have the basically the same "Twin Cooling" Smsng refrigerator, model (RF24...) I just went through this. I did the blow dryer thing several times but the issue (fan noise>>fan stops>>ice builds>>warm fridge) issue kept happening. Ultimately, I learned a few things. Glad to share if it can help you and possibly others...
#1. These things don't last forever and at some point you will simply have to replace parts.
#2. The big cover that has the fan and a sensor built into it often needs to be replaced. One main reason is that once it ices up, it can store and trap a lot of water inside (you can't see it.) To your good point, this "moisture" makes it infinitely easier for ice to quickly build back up in the future. When I replaced the entire assembly (cover, fan, sensor), it weighed about 2lbs. less than the moisture logged cover I took out (exact same part.) The extra weight was due to a lot of trapped moisture (behind the cover, in the foam, etc.)
#3. In total, replaced the entire rear cover assembly (Cover, Fan Sensor), Main Control (circuit) Board (reprogrammed for longer defrost cycle), Defrost sensor (2 sensors in total) and the entire Ice maker.
#4. It is also very important every 6-12 months to thoroughly clean the back, sides and coils. They attract dirt and dust.
#5. Clear the drain tubes. All the moisture that turned to ice or water needs somewhere to go. Using the blow dryer on the evap. coil will not clear the drain (just below it.) Inside, the back of the unit, check the drain tubes- there should be 3 of them. By design, they are somewhat pinched and because of this, they can easily get clogged. There are fixes for this. At a minimum, remove, clean and replace them. It is very easy, basic maintenance that most will never do unless there is an ongoing issue.
Finally now, after doing all of this it is no longer icing up and working correctly.
My Final Tips:
- As you said, do not expose a lot of moisture inside as that will gather on the evaporator e.g., open cup of liquids, cut fruits, cut watermelon that isn't in a sealed container.
- Refrigerators are not designed so much to add COLD as they are to remove HEAT. In that process, like your homes AC, they accumulate moisture on the evaporator and it needs to drain correctly.
- Keep the refrigerator doors closed as much as possible.
- It is always about 5-10 degrees F colder on the bottom shelves. That is where the more perishable items should go.

Great video. My wife and I just did the repair and it fixed our problem. Took about 25 minutes, most of the time to unload and load the fridge. No music, no blah, blah, blah. Terrific!

Our compliments to the maker of this video! Out in our rural area it saved a huge amount of time in coordinating a repairman to come out and probably several hundred dollars in cost. It was excellent and for a first time video is exceptional. We just used it to successfully get rid of the horrendous noise that we had no idea about the cause, but the noise matched up and the directions were outstanding. Not long blow-harding, the finger pointing and written words were right to the point, and the film editing condensed the essentials in an super efficient manner. And it actually worked for us! Perfect video! Love the visual tips and no talking. Much easier to follow and pause. You just saved me from spending +$2K on a new fridge...at least for now.
One takeaway, do not chip away at the ice, be patient with the blow-dryer. You'll be able to do it with your fingers without a chance of damaging cooper tubing.

Words of advice to add to this great video, since I just finished mine -
1. Place the fridge in 'Shop Mode' which turns off the compressor while leaving everything else on. It's in your manual under Using The Control Panel - Cooling Off Mode. This stops your coils from freezing as you are melting the ice, making it easier to remove all buildup. (Note - after turning off the Shop Mode it may take 10 minutes or so for the compressor to restart. Don't panic like I did)
2. Remove the fan panel (the grey plastic panel the fan's attached to) and check for ice behind there. I found a large block of ice inside there, blocking the lower fan vents. Without removing that ice the fridge would have froze up again in no time.

@@k9aerial567 You can also unplug, but by placing the fridge in Shop Mode you then have the lights in the fridge to help illuminate it while you work. Otherwise you will probably need a flashlight or other external lighting to see better.

@@catherinebertholdvaliquett4605 Although forced defrost helps, it will not eliminate all the ice and you will soon be back doing the same thing in a shorter amount of time. You can melt most of the ice with forced defrost, but you would need to completely warm the entire fridge for an extended period of time to eventually melt all of the ice buildup in hard to reach places. In that amount of time you would need to keep your food refrigerated elsewhere.
For instance, my icemaker would freeze up at least once a week, even though I would use a blow dryer to completely defrost the ice buildup. I found out there is a duct in the back where freezer air came in. It was almost froze shut with ice, even though I was defrosting the icemaker. I found a way to access the duct and remove and dry the ice buildup. Since then the fridge has been quiet and the icemaker is performing great. No frosty buildup inside.
I think your suggestion would probably work fine if the drain is frozen, causing water to backup into the fridge, but the solid block of ice around the fan or in the icemaker will probably not melt completely.

An additional note about these Samsung refrigerators: they are very often factory set/recommended to temps that are too low. Turn your freezer and fridge temps up a few degrees, and that should also help. Also, if you’re noticing your lower (wide) drawer being hard to pull out, it has ice frozen under it, and this is due to the drain line being frozen up (happens when the freezer is set too low). These fridges have an automatic defrost function that kicks on periodically that is supposed to keep those coils ice free, but the feature is not very useful, as it does melt the ice, but leaves the coils wet to re-freeze again anyway, and then when your drain line is also frozen, it fills the bottom of the fridge with water that eventually freezes your drawer shut.
I just called Samsung about my drawer not pulling out. I just got my fridge yesterday morning. There is no way it could be frozen that quickly. But, there is frost. SMH! They said to call Lowes installation since they just delivered it and that it could be an installation problem. :( I think I need a new fridge.

Just wow! I thought I don't have to add my thanks to the endless list of thank-you comments, but I can't stop myself from thanking you! Amazing instruction video, made this look like a medium difficulty job. Fixed the refrigerator and moved on with my life, rather than manually defrosting and cleaning up all the water and destroying the food and losing sanity.
I watched once, then played and paused while completing each step. The format and instruction was so easy to follow, the job was done in about an hour, no waiting on a repair person, not to mention, no price tag. Thank you.

This is a good video to show the disassembly and re-assembly of the inside of the refrigerator. And it's great at showing how to get rid of the ice. The only problem is it will have to be repeated over and over. I had this problem and after de-icing the ice would just come back in a month or two. My original problem was the drain icing up and causing water to pool at the bottom of the refrigerator compartment and eventually drip into the floor. I solved that with a couple heavy pieces of copper wire inserted as far as possible into the drain once defrosted and then wrapping the rest of the wire around the defrost heater element. Later the ice started forming around the fan area at the top. I tried more than one remedy but nothing worked - I'd keep having to open up the area and do a manual defrost/ice removal. I finally had an "ah-ha" moment and my fix has lasted well over a year now. I wrapped the copper lines coming into the compartment from the upper right area with the very thick (almost a millimeter thick) rubber electrical splicing tape. That tape is stretchable and will stick to itself but isn't sticky to your fingers or even the copper tubing. I went from where the line come in all the way to where it goes down the side the condenser and made put two layers. It was very easy to wrap the tape around very tight. As I said, it's been well over a year (18 months???) since I've done this and have not had any more problems with ice build-up. I really like my Samsung refrigerator and know this is a HUGE problem but I'm happy again. If I were to buy another Twin-Cooling Samsung refrigerator I'd just take the back panel off and add the rubber electrical tape and the copper wire from the get-go.

We had this exact same thing happening to our fridge. This video saved us a repair visit and probably several hundred dollars. Took about 45 minutes to complete and the longest part of that was defrosting with the hair dryer. Thanks for the video.
Absolutely the best "how to" I have ever used. It took about an hour, start to finish. My wife even helped. This helped me not turn off my refrigerator and freezer for 2-3 days. There was a significate ice build up. It's already started to cool down, and guess what - no noise!!
Great video. Unfortunately this will happen again and again. As an owner of Samsung refrigerator, I’ve had to do this numerous times. Currently Samsung is not acknowledging this problem. Last I heard there is a class action lawsuit happening.
Great video. Only thing that I would add is to be careful when you are pulling off the cover panel, as the ice can be stuck to the Styrofoam in the middle and you could damage it if you pull too hard. Use a hairdryer to blow warm air on the panel and through the gaps along the edges until it comes free easily. Also, unplug and remove the panel completely from the fridge then check it for ice too. I pulled off the fan shroud as well as the thin metal sheet and the piece of styrofoam behind it. They both had a ton of ice inside, blocking the drainage channels though the Styrofoam and encroaching on the bottom of the fan. The Styrofoam was completely saturated in spots. I wasn't able to dry it out completely because I had to get perishables back into the fridge. I expect I'll run into this issue again. Hopefully not for a long time, though.
That's a great idea to use the hairdryer on the edges before you begin to pry. I was prepared to use it to defrost the coils/buildup, but not during disassembly.
I have watched dozens and dozens of "How To" videos on TH-cam. This is perhaps the very best I've seen. No long unrelated stories, no annoying "Look at my wife-kids-dog-cat-whatever". No time is wasted, all to the point steps. The titling works very well. Hats off to Vic!
After 3 years, this morning I woke up with this noise coming from my fridge. I noticed ice formed inside and came out on the back wall (holes on the wall). I knew it’s the ice problem, but didn’t want to unplug the whole fridge since the food may be spoiled. This trick you used is great! Thanks for showing!

I bought the Square Trade extended warranty. I never buy warranties but after reading poor reviews I got a 5 year after market warranty. Good investment because Samsung is pure junk and I've had it repaired a number of times already.. After yet another issue I decided I will tackle this one myself.
My ice maker broke to the point that technicians couldnt fix it. Had to disasble it. Now I have this issue. None of it was covered by warranty.

This has to be the very best explanation of any YouTub's repair on any product that the general public may have needed to help them repair an item. This man needs to have a wider range of knowledge for many repairs needed because I use TH-cam regularly and I have seen any better. No background noise or loud music for distraction, the best. This video, as so many others have said, is a great how-to. The description of the problem and the instructions were clear, precise, and help me take care of the problem in about 30 minutes. Two thumbs up!
In addition, make sure to clean and drain water defrost line. It's most likely clogged and causes excess water/humidity buildup inside fridge. Easy access from back of the fridge, after sheet metal cover is removed. There are 2 or 3 drain tubes leading to drain pan; one or more of drain tubes is likely to be completely blocked with dirt and gunk. Good luck!
Thanks for the straightforward and simple video. It helped me get inside to find out what the real problem was. Also, unplugging the second, larger electrical connector allows full removal of the "Twin Cooling" fan and ducting component out of the refrigerator. My fan motor was completely encased in a solid block of ice including all fan blades. After thawing that out with a hair dryer, I found that the fan's entire discharge ductwork was also filled with ice. More hot air to clear that glacier. It wasn't until I pulled the evaporator coil out of the lower tray, however, that I found the likely cause of the ice buildup. The condensate drain was frozen solid. This required more hot air and hot water to thaw. That was probably also the source of the recurring heavy frost that plagued the ice maker on a regular basis. Before reinstalling the coils, I also had to seal the cracked plastic on the rear panel at the base of the coils that would allow condensate to seep through the plastic to regions not intended to be wetted.
A very prolonged defrost on the order of days would be needed to clear all the ice that I found in my 5 year old fridge. In summary, thanks again for the path to find and fix this problem, but be sure to check the 1 cm diameter drain hole behind the evaporator coils or you will be doing this job again way too soon.
P.S. The ice maker is terrible engineering and was designed to jam the ice in the narrow space as it gets scavenged from the freeze tray. Samsung's refrigerator design and engineering is not very good.

Great video, I would add that you can pull the remaining cable to completely remove the plastic panel which gives you access to the fan assembly. Remove 4 screws for the fan assembly and make sure there is no ice build up there as well.
After almost 5 years, our Samsung French Door Refrigerator made loud annoying noise. The troubleshoot search suggests us to call for service which would have cost us a lot of money. Hey Vic! Thanks for the video. I've seen it a few times. Over the summer, our milk was curdling. I didn't know anything about the Samsung fridge issue, so I blamed it on the Walmart milk, and told my wife not to buy that brand again. The descent was very gradual and I don't recall what keyed me in but there was a lot of fan noise and then it just got better. We rolled in a spare fridge and unplugged the Samsung for 2 days. I plugged it back in, bought a refer thermometer, and everything was fine until the last week when things got very noisy and then silent and then the thermometer advertised things are not as they should be. At this point I followed your instructions and things are off to the right start. I hope I don't have to do this every 6 months, but I have your tutorial if I do. I will just state that Samsung refrigerators are absolute garbage!!! If you are buying a house with one in it, request a $3000 credit!
We cannot thank you enough for this video. We have the same fridge and the noise our fan made was identical. We thought we would have to replace the fan, which Amazon will deliver within 3 days, but we weren't sure if the fan would hold on until then. It's 3 days before Christmas and the fridge and freezer are full. We came across your video, instructions were *perfect*, no special tools required, just some patience, screw drivers and a hair dryer. Project took about an hour, we just finished. It's cooling now and the fan is quiet again. .
Thank you for making this video! My Samsung fridge was making the exact same noise a couple weeks back. Then a few days went by and it stopped, then food stopped feeling quite as cold. I took everything out and removed the parts just like in your video and found a ton of ice build up! Spent just over an hour with the hair dryer and getting the ice melted from both the fridge and the fan diffuser panel . There was ice built up inside the styrofoam cavity of the diffuser panel that you cannot see. I unscrewed the panel where the fan was mounted and found more ice chunks that needed to be melted with the hair dryer.
Excellent repair advice and thank you so much. One word of caution...you may want to wait for some thawing to occur before trying to pry the back panel off of the rear of refrigerator. Our frost was so bad it adhered to the foam on the panel and therefore I caused a little damage until I saw what was occurring. But truly appreciate your time and sharing this information.
I had the same problem! I used the blow dryer on the panel off and on, careful not to let the panel get too hot. Frosted foam is no joke.
Here and elsewhere there's been mention of the "Refrigerator Defrost" (rD) setting. I tried that first - went through the defrost cycle 8 times over several days. It didn't make much of an improvement (too much ice perhaps). So I used this very helpful video. Here are some of my own observations and suggestions:
1) Instead of gently moving and supporting the unscrewed panel off to the left side, simply remove the other connected plug as well. The whole thing is now completely out of the way.
2) Instead of shutting off the fridge at the circuit breaker, put the fridge into "Demo" mode (how they have it in store showrooms) - mine works by simultaneously pressing "Freezer", "Fridge" and "Alarm" buttons for about 10 seconds. In Demo mode, the interior lights work even though the rest of the fridge isn't (but the lights will go off if the doors stay open for more than 15 minutes - simply close and re-open the doors).
3) The reason the defrost mode doesn't work well is because the ice builds up from a moisture leak where the tubing comes in from the back. And the foam that's supposed to insulate those pipes as they go into the back of the fridge is water absorbent! (nice thinking, Samsung...) So be sure to squeeze the foam thoroughly and blow dry it for a long time. I don't know how to seal the air leak, so I'm probably stuck doing this fix every 3-4 years - very disappointing. I'm thinking of perhaps going though its Defrost feature once a month for preventative maintenance....

Thank you! You saved me the cost of a repair man coming out. I defrosted the fridge 3 weeks ago and I was scratching my head today when that fan noise started up AGAIN. I left it unplugged for 6-8 hours defrosting figuring all the ice must be thawed. Nope. Once I disassembled it like your video I could see that area was packed with ice still.
On my model it was unnecessary to remove the clear plastic front cover on the bottom. The bottom shelf comes off when you pinch the plastic on both sides. Thank you Peacemaker Vic! You made me a handyman hero today!

Here is an additional step that could buy time from having to do it again (forgive me, I do not know the technical terms or reasons)...once opened, there is a white clip on the vertical copper tube on the right. Move it over (it just clips on/off) to the tube to the left, and it will freeze much less frequently.

Thank you so much for this video! I was able to complete this task in about 2 hours. While the ice was melting, I cleaned all the shelves and drawers, etc. It's like a new fridge again! Thank you for posting - I prefer to watch this wordless video than to have to listen to some guy ramble on.....
To prevent this from happening again, apply a small amount of caulk to both copper lines where they penetrate through the back after you get the plastic panel off. The black sticky material that comes from the factory isn’t enough to prevent humid air from entering the holes the lines come through causing the ice to form around these lines
Wow this could be my entire problem. I've literally replaced every component, including new evaporator cover and main board. But I am still freezing up every 3 weeks or so! What kind of caulk should I use and have you confirmed this is a permanent fix?
I'm wondering the same thing - did this fix it permanently? Or are you still having the same issue? I've done this hairdyer temporary fix 3 times now.

After you apply the fix, I recommend you pull the drain tube out the back and let it hang off onto the floor (assuming you have tile flooring), and you should see a small puddle of water every day if your defrost is working. If it isn't you won't see anything.
I have since put mine completely back together and it's now been two months of no issues! It's a great feeling!
After you remove the back plate completely, you can fold that shelf on the left down and prop your hair dryer on it to blow directly on the ice.
I bought an extended warranty for a $2800 Samsung fridge. In the last 4 years, it has broke 4 times. 3 times was from ice build up as shown in your video. Warranty is now over and the same repair company was going to charge $670 bucks to "replace parts" that they replaced 8 months ago. Your video saved me a ton of money. Thank you!

5 years ago we redid our kitchen, bought all Samsung appliances. Our range crapped out after 3 years and two repairs. Fridge, as above, caused these same icing issues at least three times previously, resulting in repair bills as it was just past the warranty, literally by days. Samsung adamantly stated they would do nothing for us, and said there was no known issues with this appliance. Unfortunately videos such as yours were not out there, so there was no do it yourself option for us. Just the same old story with them.
This last week, fridge started icing up and the fan was as loud as ever. We swore we would no longer put a nickel into that Samsung fridge, and went out and bought a different brand. Of course, due to Covid, we will not see the fridge until October. But if this fix works, and it certainly seems to be working, we will cancel our order, and you have saved this family 2k! Thank you!
My learned lesson is that I will never ever buy a Samsung anything. In fact, I will never recommend Samsung to anyone, and will, whenever the opportunity presents itself, slam that manufacturer and their products.

For those asking about the cause and what would prevent it from occurring again: there is a seal issue somewhere.
In my case I realized the door mullion (the flapper piece on the left door) had been damaged and was essentially stuck open due to the male end of the guide at the top being snapped off. With the flapper always “open” it was not providing a full seal while we also didn’t realize their was an issue. While removing the ice from the fan I flipped it to the closed position during moving of the trays and then found it not opening properly when the left door was closed last.
Did you end up finding a spare part just for the male end of the guide? Did you replace the entire flapper? I think I have a similar problem
One of the best detailed video how to fix with clear instruction. Took me about two hours to open and remove the ice by hair dryer ( recommend to slow melt with low heat rather to break the ice or with high heat) and close. Thank you Vic.

Thanks SO much! We used this technique last night and it worked wonders! I can't remember if I have ever left a comment on a video before, but I had to today because the video's approach was clear and concise and helped us make this fix in about an hour and a half (including emptying the fridge beforehand and cleaning it and putting food back afterward). The only upgrade we made to the process was removing both wires connecting the back door so we could fully remove the door (rather than propping it up as shown in the video). Hopefully the noise doesn't come back soon, but if it does, we'll know what to do! Thanks again for the helpful video!

@@paulmasonmiller Or the sensor or the defrost timer. These are the top 3 reasons I researched. But I may as well take my compressor hose and blow out the vents first. I have melted the ice as you mentioned and since I was removing the panel, I went ahead and bought a new fan motor for $30 online and replaced that in 5 extra minutes to be safe.

I followed your steps and saved myself some money. The one thing I'd like to add for those trying this fix is to be careful when removing the panel. Mine was frozen stuck. So take a hairdryer to the panel to loosen and melt the ice a bit before trying to pry it off to roughly. Good luck to all!😃👌
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this video!! Two weeks ago the circulating fan froze up, but since it's still under warranty we had the repair guy out to 'fix' it. He told us it wouldn't happen again, but fast forward a couple of weeks and here we are again. This time, though, the repair guy can't come out for at least a week, so I thought we'd have to just put up with the noise until then. The noise stopped, so I thought that maybe the fridge had gone into a defrost mode and temporarily fixed the issue, but no. Turns out it was SO frozen over that the fan had stopped, which I realized when the fridge started seeming warm. Even though the panel still read 36 degrees, it was actually 56 degrees inside and the food (and my father-in-law's insulin) were all warming up. We followed your instructions and got it working again, and I'm so happy we can use the fridge until the guy figures out what's causing it in the first place. You did a great service to all of us Samsung owners!!

Great job on the instructions. On my unit I had to take out the water filter first to get the clear cap off surrounding it, and also had more Styrofoam insulation than Vic which was also stuck by the ice. Took some time with the hair dryer at this point to keep it from breaking, and could hear and see it releasing as I did put heat to it. This video was really great and saved me a lot of money. It's a great video, and as so many have said, one of the best. There's no talking, no self-promotion, just straight to the point. The only thing I would add is that if the panel is difficult to remove, ice may have frozen to the fan or the panel. Use the blow dryer until the panel loosens.

Thanks for doing this- spot on! I had already gone through this & stumbled through the repair and the hardest part was removing the bottom shelf. I would only add that it is easier to remove both connectors from fan unit & remove the piece from the fridge- just take a pic of the connections before disconnecting!

I just can't even put into words how spot on this video was!!! it was the first one I came to, thrilled that so there was no ego driven commentary, loved the words and actions only, and most of all IT WORKED!!! It was EXACTLY what was wrong and the fix went exactly as the video. I know for a fact if I had called a repairman it would have been $200-300 dollars and probably would have said I would need a new fan. Without a doubt you saved me big bucks. The only thing I will add is, my husband didn't want me taking off the back cover, said just unplug and let it defrost.... which I did for a few hours, then decided to take a peek and the cover has styrofoam on the back so it had not even begun to defrost, that would have taken at least 24 hours if not more so go ahead and take it apart...

Did mine 2 weeks ago. I suggest you replace the Heater Element and the temperature sensor too. Although I had purchased the parts, I did exactly the same procedure you did and system froze up again a few days later. Once I replaced the Heater Element,, the problem has not shown up again as of today. I still have new Temp sensor in case it does freeze up at later time. I like finding out things like this and since I have the time...
Joe, where did you get your heater part? How did u know that the heater part needed to be replaced? Any videos on how to replace the heater part?
I know that this has been mentioned in other comments, but I want to say this as well as it was easy and effective. I fixed this issue by taking everything out of my fridge and putting it my garage fridge and coolers. I opened the doors and unplugged the fridge and let it thaw for about 36 hours. I also cleaned it out and removed the lower rear panel and vacuumed the condenser area. That's all there was to it, nothing to take apart.
Thank you Vic. You went right to the point, step by step and no annoying music or silly introductions. I mus say this fridge is starting to get on my nerves..this is the second time I have to fix something on it. I keep having to defrost the ice maker every month and a half or so because the ice maker stops working.
I just followed this to fix my Samsung- I'll add that it's easy to undo that second plug and pull the cover completely free. Then it's easy to remove the four screws holding in the fan mount on the inside of the cover and remove the fan. This helps because in my case the plenum on the other side of the fan was where a lot of the ice was, and trying to remove it through the blades of the fan would not be very effective.
The nature of this problem suggests that you could simply power off the fridge for a few days (there is no defrost setting on my model) and let the ice melt by itself. My fridge needed cleaning anyway.

People!! This is a great video but the DIFFICULT way of fixing this issue. There is a way of doing It without taking apart your fridge or taking anything out of It. You just to put It in “shop mode” and then turn on the heating element (rd mode) in the back which will melt all the ice in the back panel. There is another instructional video on TH-cam that’s similar named to this one but says “easy fix”. You’re welcome.

You could also just unplug until it defrosts, then plug it back in. Works just the same (for about a month until the noise comes back and you have to repeat the whole process) without having to open it all up every month.
That was exactly what I thought ! I was like ‘why not let it sit unplugged and avoid all the hassle ?’
@@recipehacker9752 While true, what do you do with all the food while it is unplugged? Also, it seems that one of the keys to success is removing what has melted, which won't readily happen in an enclosed space.
@@buckm3183 Hi. I eventually let it sit unplugged for an hour and then put a hair blow dryer to it. The blow fryer did the trick. The issue hasn’t recurred either.

This was an excellent video! My friend suffers from Misophonia, and the sound was driving her crazy. It took me 1.5 hours to fix, (including a deep clean) Everything shown in the video was exactly as it was in my refrigerator. I'm ashamed to say that we had the same problem 2 years ago and had an appliance repair company handle it. It cost me 800 bucks! Great job Vic!
